I had the most luck with the regular Wavethrashers up around The Tower of Eldara (86, 25 or so). Took about 30 minutes at lvl 51.

I found a large concentration of Wavethrashers in the bay north of the Temple of Arkkoran (a named landmark on the regular map). Again, just as with the coursers, focus on the higher level beasts to greatly improve the drop rate of the Wavethrasher Scales.

If you click on the underlined "Wavethrasher Scales" above in the quest text it shows the drop rate to be better for the lower level Wavethrashers, including the Young Wavethrashers. I had equal luck it seemed with all the mobs I killed. Much better drop rate then the antlers for me.

Don't bother with trying the Young Wavethrashers. There are way too few spawns to make them worthwild to hunt for the scales. The first post about heading towards the Tower of Eldara and farming the Wavethrashers there is a good choice. They spawn on the beach and sometimes just off shore. There is easily enough to get your scales in under 30 minutes. The only bad part about this area is the sheer number of roaming Murlocs and Makrura in the area. At 51 you might have some issues without being careful, so take caution while fighting.

I had good luck around 88,34 ... but it's out in the boonies. You won't be able to eat and drink very often out there at sea, so I'd only recommend that area if you're lvl 54 or above. That said, there were a good number of the wavethrashers around compared to other areas. There are a decent number on land north of there as well.

I will go back to some of the coords stated here and try. I did this tonight, level 56 Night Elf Hunter w/pet same level ... I started counting on paper with the little tic-marks 1-2-3-4-5, 1-2-3-4-5, etc ... I killed 32 Wavethrashers ... took FOREVER to even find them ... was about to abandon the quest ... and got ONE SCALE on the 32nd kill!!! That is just BS!! I was going to petition the quest as broken or at least a total waste of time. BAH!! What a joke. If I didn't REALLY want that charm ...another hunter in the area told me she had gotten 4 in 25 kills ... so her odds were a lot better than mine :(

I found maybe 30 in like an hour and a half from those 30(it was the young ones i was after)i had 2 scales. So don't look for the young ones cos they really don't spawn often enough to be worth the annoyance of swimming around for that period of time

Kill the regular Wavethrashers, i got 6 in 9 kills total just ran along the shore line (had Beast Tracking on) and took about 15 minutes traveling and all (found like 3 or 4 close to the tower)

I recommend route between tower at (89,33) and (82,11). Wavethrashers are usualy on the coast, while the Young Wavethrashers are usualy in the water. For me, youngs had better drop rate, so consider https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=9452 or https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=5996 or simply skip them

If this helps any one I went in too the ocean at 57,8 and under the noggenfogger potion the (skeletal) form and hunted the wave thrashers with no outside mob influences and they all dropped with in 15min for me hope this helps lvl 52 hunter

After doing the coursers, the droprate didnt seem so bad. However, less mobs to kill and very spread out, in water nonetheless.

Took me about 40 minutes as a 50 BM hunter. The mobs are pretty easy to kill even being 53 and all, your pet should have the new rank of Growl and be 50 from killing the hundreds of coursers in the previous part of course. =P

I've killed about a million of the regular thrashers and get 4/6 scales.
Drop rate seems horrible.

Oh and btw, the tower zone (88,34) is fine even at level 50, I'm only 50 and nothings even been close to killing me yet.

Spent over an hour swimming up and down the coast dodging raging murlocs & elite giants only to kill 16 Wavethrashers and have 3 scales drop. Had to take a break, i'll update when i'm done. The only good thing is I've got lots of thick & rugged leather from this chain quest, call it a perk if you will, i won't. On a side note, i've gone through roughly 800 arrows, so make sure your quiver / ammo pouch is full before embarking on this journey.

Great Wavethrashers are the way to go .. I found lots of them at the southern end of Azshara on the Bay of Storms side around 70,75 and on around to 50,92.

Looks like Blizzard lowered the drop rate. I've been clearing the area around Tower of Eldara twice so far and only got 1 scale.

I'm starting to think the trinket is not worth the amount of time spending on doing this quest.

P.S: I dropped the quest. 1 scale after an hour of farming is just simply ridiculous.

Took about 45 minutes from start to delivery of this quest tonight for my lvl 50 toon.

What I did was head straight north and jump down at about 41,16, then swim/run along the coast towards 87,23. Naturally, you should track beasts and kill any wavetrashers you spot.

By the point I reached 87,23 I got the last drop and could ride back.

I started up on the northern-most shore killing the young ones, there I got one scale in roughly 15 mins...
I swam around the coast looking for more, in 5 mins of swimming...
Moved down the the Temple of Arkkoran and killed the normal Wavethrashers, I got one scale in about 10 mins...
Swam down to the Southridge Beach (took about 10-15 mins) and got my last four scales in four Greater kills

Got my first scale at my 8th kill, near the Tower of Eldara.
They are easy to kill but I really honestly believe that these incredibly low drop rates is something that Blizzard should review!

Took me about 1 hour and 50 minutes and 28 kills to get all the scales... :(

The boring part is the moving back and forth looking for these dudes and waiting for respawns...

I've done this quest on 3 hunter, and it feels more painful every time I do it. Bad spawn rates, Bad spawn locations, slow travel time due to the water, Bad drop rates. each time I've done it I've taken over an hour.

-Killing young ones: bad drop rates
-Killing normal ones: bad rates bad spawns
-Kiling the greater ones: lots of high levels "trash", questionable drop rates.

Quest needs a buff, either 100% drop or better spawns for the mobs.

Rewards are questionable in terms of effort to reward, they're gonna be replace in outlands very quickly.

Get a few elixirs of water walking https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=8827, put on Aspect of the Cheetah and just run to the north-east part over water where most Wavethrashers are.

Doing this I avoided all major aggro issues when walking over land, plus I killed some thrashers underway. Just be careful of the elite giants and some other mobs, but they can be avoided easily.

Mobs are pretty uncommon, but at least the drop rate is good. I killed 9 regular (and 1 young) wave thrashers to get my 6 scales.

Blizzard really needs to rethink this quest. Wether its upping the amount of quest mobs, or letting them roam on land, something needs to be done. Swimming up and down a coast in water for 2 hours made me almost delete my hunter. This quest is complete garbage.

This quest is almost not even worth the XP. I got scales on my first 3 guys then killed 12 in a row without anything so I'm guessing it was luck. This quest needs more wavethrashers also, like everyone is saying, swimming and swimming and swimming for an hour is pointless. If you have good patients then go for it, but if you can spare the XP I say skip this quest.

when swimming out in the water beware of the elite sharks roaming around. they can kill you in about 3-4 hits. I had to try and attack one just for the fun of it on my hunter, bad idea with the GY run.

I roamed around a lot, however, I found a group of them around the 52, 5.1 area which was approximately 400 yards to the north of where the quest stated they were at. I killed approximately 12-15 of them before getting all 6.

I first came to Azshara and wanted to hunt lobster for my cooking skill. I wandered the entire coast and couldn't find a way down. Now I have a quest down there?

I had a lot of luck with Young Wavecrashers at about 57,10 to 62,10, where the mountains are. The drop rate was almost 100%, and there were no other mobs around. only took me 8 kills :)

it was also really easy to find them with track beasts since the other mobs were humanoids or yellow

This quest took FOREVER to finish! So only do it if u have plenty of patience.
its not really hard just very time consuming. just avoid the elite giants and youll be fine =)

Took 55 minutes to gather the scales. I was competing with two other hunters. The drop rate is not higher and Azshara, despite being a beautiful zone, is still one of the worst zones to do anything in.

The devialsaur eye is a great trinket but maybe not 100% worth it.

Don't bother doing this quest. It takes upwards of half an hour, drop on quest item isn't even 100% and rewards are weak.

I recommend starting at the southeast portion of the map and moving your way back west along the coastline at the bottom of the area. If you are using Blizz' new quest tracker on their map (I was) the areas that they highlight give you an extremely small area to look in. Use these as a rough guideline, but go further out into the open water - that's where the threshers are. Make sure your tracking is on and the drops should come quickly enough.

Took me about 20 minutes looking around for a way 'up' from the jagged reef from where these guys are found until I finally gave up and hearthed.
Talk about a stupid design! At least make a couple ways up to the regular elevation so players don't get stuck!
Azshara sucks, just throwing it out there.

I will never do another Sunken Temple class specific quest again!

ST becomes available at level 45 but the quest (chain) does not start until 50.
Then you have to travel forever, through heavy high level mobs and elites, to find minimal spawn mobs that have a VERY low drop rate!
And at the end of this GRUELING chain of quests is a reward that is not any better than what you can buy in the auction house for 20 Gold.

Wavethrashers are not classified (like goo) so they are UNTRACKABLE. They look like orange 3-headed hydras and walk along the coast by the Tower of Eldara (89,34) in Azshara. Goto the tower and head north along the coast. If you are not yet done, head back to the tower then west along the coast. Not a bad drop rate (1 in 4) so maybe Blizzard improved it since the previous posters' complaints. :) Place your vote!

I had no probs with this stage as 52 NE Hunter, farmed the best drop rate left of the Tower of Eldara (in the 87,20's area), didn't need breathing potions in the deep parts, just sent pet down and pulled him back within breathable area and killed, had, I reckon about 3 kills to a drop.

You can go to the tower of eldara (89,33) i found alot of them there took me 10 minutes to finish.. they walk around on land so you dont need water breath potions. I did this as a lvl 50 hunter! Good luck!

Go for the Wavethrasher (lvl 52-53) not the Young Wavethrasher.

Best location is a circular pattern around the Tower of Eldara to the far east. That little penisula around 89, 34. On land and in deep water and everywhere between.

Farther NE is a WASTE of time. Farther West there are just fewer target mobs.

The best place to look is the around the Tower of Eldara. I found upwards of 10 around the coastline and you can find them as far out as you can swim. The tower is in the north east part of the map.

I also found 4-5 on land at any given time. Besides the swim up the coast because I thought they were all in the water, once I got up there, it really took no longer than 20 mins to get my drops, picking 1 drop up along the swim up the coast.

If you're just starting this quest and haven't done it before, head straight to the Tower of Eldara area. It will save you a lot of time.

it took 2� hours, i killed 18 of them and got:
3/10 from Great Wavethrashers
1/5 from Wavethrashers
2/3 from Young Wavethrashers

yeah, definitely, the hardest part is to find them

I didn't find any wavethrashers at the location detailed on the above map. I only found them at the fartherst eastern edge of the upper penninsula. They were near the point with the tower, past the areas where the Courser Mosshoofs are found.

I can see how it would be very frustrating if you don't expect to be spending some time on it so here's your warning- VERY TIME CONSUMING!
Now that we're past that- I went to the tower like everyone suggested. I probably got a droprate of 1-4, not bad. Start at the south of the peninsula and work your way up to the north and circle through the water down to the south. Rinse and repeat. I got to halfway through the water part and I was done but as I left I noticed the threshers on land had ALREADY respawned. With just half that circuit and the moose part, I walked away with three pearls including a golden, a plate green that will probably auction for 4 or 5g, a plate blue that will sell for 20g, a half level exp, and bags full of vendor trash. I was expecting to grind this level anyways, I found it to be very convienent- MUCH more convienant than trying to make your way through the gobs of aggroing hyppogryphs to the quest giver. I highly recommend a noggenfogger/underwater breathing pot but I survived without. Goodluck.

I found it easiest at about 88,31 around the Tower of Eldara. There's more of them, and the're on land so you don't have to fight in the water. Reasonable drop rate, and plenty of good loot from the other mobs in the area too. Came back with a bag of pearls. :)

DO NOT I repeat DO NOT go where this map here tells you to go. There ar about 3-5 Wavethrashers in that entire area and take an INCREDIBLY long time to spawn. Go to 83.30 and just walk around in that area. This map is EXTREMLY missleading and should be removed from the site.

Bliz has these hydras intersecting with "humanoids" a lot, so it's easy to find yourself getting jumped by things 1-4 lvls above you. I suggest keeping "track beasts" up until you find one, the switching to "track humanoids" while you're fighting, so you can see what's around.

And I *strongly* agree with a poster above--bring 2 potions of greater water breathing. It took me slightly over an hour to do this, and it's a lot easier with a potion.

You may also want to do this along with the pool samples quest from UC Apothecary, the 4 Tablets quest from Az, and the quest to find "some rune" from the goblin north of the Blood elf area. The tablet quest in particular results in well over 20,000xp since you get 4 quests to deliver the tablets, and 4 to return payment to the base in Az--easy.

WTB Aspect of the Fish. :( +30% Swim speed, dazed if hit, and UNDERWATER BREATHING.

These things are incredibly hard to find, but the drop rate is really high. A big, welcome change from the Coursers. Look around 95,35, off the coast near the Tower of Aldara, and be prepared to do a lot of diving. :)

I did it by throwing on Track Beasts and swimming up and down the coast, diving down to kill them. They show up as Aggressive Beasts on your minimap.

Hi guys i would like to confirm that from grid co ords 88.25 to 90.35 there is a vast number of the wavethrasher around and it is easy to complete this quest from here.

I searched some other co ords and found the drop rate to be around 1% i hope this helps u out.

I know that a fellow hunter said that its not worth the trawl for the trinket but in farness to him he was having some rather bad luck. Should he or she been looking in these co ords it would have made the grind that little bit easyer and of course the xp u get if ur lvling is very good as well but only come to here if ur well speced as the vreatures like to gang on u and ur pet.

I supose now we know how it feels when we gank the alliance and creatures of this world ! its finally pay back time so be Warned.

I went to 87,25 and while there was only one wave thrasher there I killed it and just starting killing the surrounding npcs and sure enough after about 1-2 minutes more wave thrashers started spawning. Happy Hunting

I am not having problems finding the Wavethrashers. I am having problems getting the scales. After 1 hour of killing them, and my bag becomming full of items from everything around me, I only had one scale. The above coordinates are correct. I believe it will only be patience and the fact that I will be alot richer by the time I finish this quest that will make it well worth the wait. The XP is not bad because I am about to level. Have fun. Kill everything around you.

If you have to kill the mobs in the water, send your pet down to get them (Dash is of course very helpful), then call it back to the surface. You won't waste as much time swimming or have to worry about your breath. Swim speed pots would be a good thing though :)

I didn't have much trouble finding these guys once I went farther out to sea. I was on the southern most beach when I started to go out farther and finished the quest fairly quickly, so I would guess they spawn more farther out.

It was all too easy. I ran off the cliff at the northern most point, and fell into the water. Swam from thrasher to thrasher. Sent my pet to do the dirty work, while I skinned the last kill. It took 16 thrashers before I got all 6 scales (kill numbers 2, 8, 11, 13, 14, & 16). The hardest part was getting back up to Ogtinc. If you set your hearth stone to Astranaar (Alliance) or Splintertree (Horde), you can get back faster than swimming around. My hearth was set to Shattrath, so that wasn't feasable. The next quest leads to the Sunken Temple. I'm looking forward to it.

Hello! Just thought I'd put in my two bits.

Everyone seems to be having a hard time finding these guys. I found a nice nest and haven't been having any problems. If you pull up your map of Azshara, look to the Northeast corner.There is a small Peninsula that somewhat resembles a southeast facing arrow. If you go just northeast of that, to the beach, you will find plenty of the young ones. Good Drop rate!

(89,33) That is where I saw the most of them. I just took my time, got all of my scales in about 1hour 30 min just killing them and spamming /target wavethrasher (made a macro) and got it done, on to the next part!

Gotta agree with fireopalwow, though I think his coords are a little misleading. I would say go to the Tower of Eldara, which is at (89, 33), and search the waters and coasts around there. It is called the Jagged Reef, as he says. Many more Wavethrashers than elsewhere, and MobInfo lists the drop rate at 34%.
Not too bad a quest at all if you go to this area! Wheee!

If you need many of these, just go to the most eastern corner at the northern peninsula of Azshara. Get further off the coast and you'll find a large amount of Wavetrashers. The drop rate was about 15% for me.

I was going around the middle to southern coasts and found that the Greater Waveth's don't have a very good drop rate. O_o Confirmed this with Alla. So if you're going to try this, go for the young ones.

Because personally, I killed like 15 of these and didn't get a single drop. :( There are also a lot of elite giants roaming around, although they give pretty neat stuff sometimes, if you can take them. :)

Another good spot for this quest is along the beach at 70,7, and continuing southeast from there. Just continue walking the beach to the southeast, and you're sure to find enough Young Wavethrashers to fulfill the quest requirement. If you walk the water's edge, you can target the Wavethrashers in the water, and pull them up onto the beach, avoiding having to fight them in the water. Watch out for lobstrocities when you pull the Wavethrashers; they tend to gang. I got all six scales this way, and only had to kill about ten of them. They often drop clams which can contain small lustrous pearls, a plus.

Way easy. Ran to the point on the coast around 88,28. First 4 I killed on land dropped. Had to go into the water for the others. First kill dropped an epic mace! Next 2 dropped the rest. Not counting travel time, maybe 10-15 mins tops.
Stay around the Tower of Eldara.

The person who said to go to the Jagged Reef was right in my opinion, although his coordinates won't even actually put you in the water. The Jagged Reef,in the far northeast part of Azshara, is a large area. The hydras are offshore. And the specific hydras you are looking for are called "Young Wavethrasher"s.

All the ones I fought were level 51 or 52 and they were well spaced from each other and from other mobs which were also around level 51 and 52. You will have to swim around through the whole huge area that is called the Jagged Reef, but on the plus side the drop rate there isn't nearly as bad as 3% and you can avoid most of the murlocs and lobster humanoids in the area. I had to kill 15 hydras to get my 6 drops. Worked for me.

The closest thing I saw to a concentrated spot for the young wavethrashers was while I was fighting one at 80.9, 5.9-- I could see three others on my mini map at one point during that fight. (I kept my tracking on beasts to look for the hydras and just watched out around me for the other mobs, but you could do it the other way around too.)

Two caveats: I did see a level 57 elite shark at one point at the furthest out point I swam to. Hopefully he doesn't move closer to shore and eat anyone. Also be prepared to run thru an area of higher levels and elite giants on your way to the shore praying that you don't get knocked off your mount or at least not often. But at least once you get through that area you won't have to jump to your death to get down to the shore. The jagged reef is one spot where you can get up and down fairly easily.

OK I don't usually post, but these messages lost me a lot of time. 55,41 to the edge of the beach at 81,12 is where I found most of the waves. Any lower or farther has to be a very rare spawn time. They spawned on the beach near the Tower 90,33 much quicker. You will be doing this quest for roughly an hour if you stick around this area, but I listed the other coord unless someone else is questing. Don't forget to SWIM OUTWARD at the Tower AND high on the beach even near the grassland, there's a bunch in deeper water and in these spots by the Tower.

That's all the info you need, don't mess with the young ones or some of these other cords, they lead nowhere to nothing.

This quest wasn't too bad, although it says to "track and hunt wavethrashers"...but they aren't trackable... =( I killed 10 total wavethrashers and got all 6 scales, I had good luck finding them in the northeast part of the map, near the tower on the beach.

ps, hunters need aspect of the dolphin or something, swimming is too slooooowwwww.....

This is a REALLY annoying quest, the wavethrasher are MOSTLY (not all) underwater, and 2/3 of the other mobs there aggros... Also, I seem to have a better drop rate from the ones underwater. That might just be me though.

There is a large group of the Young Wavethrasher around location 49,8. That's in the water to the north and almost right in the middle of the map in that northern water area.

I had to kill about 10-12 of them to get my 6 scales for the hunter quest.

Well... I don't expect blizzard sacrificed much though to this part of the quest... they let us hunters hunt a creature which doesn't have a type... so we can't track it... perfect quest for a hunter ^^

They're now beasts, contradicting what Eleonoway has said. You can use Track Beasts to track them.

Ok, some people have said that they do not have a type and cannot be tracked; when I went there this afternoon, they were classified as Beasts, and could be tracked.

I did find a lot of them around the Tower of Eldara (90,33), which is on a small, sandy peninsula at the very easternmost bit of land on the map. Be careful, though, since there are lots of murlocs and crab-people about, and if you're tracking beasts they can sneak up on you. The drop rate wasn't so bad; about every one in three dropped scales for me.

Ughhh! This quest makes me hate questing. Horrid drop rate, and very few thrashers. However, found most, say 90% of the thrashers around Tower of Eldara (89,33) -- the entire tip. solo'd without difficulty at 54, with the exception of venturing into the Temple and aggoing five murks and makrinni's.

ok so i was swimming over to the tower dodging giants right? so im passing the giant/snake combo and look to my left, and theres a giant, as i was swimming away, i noticed he farted. he farted a big green bubble underwater. the then proceeded to pop it, sniff his finger, and wave his hand to get the smell away.

I went into this thinking it would be difficult- Instead I got the 6 drops in less than 10 kills.

I started at 66,6 and worked my way along the coast to 82,10 and got all 6 drops off of Young Wavethrashers. The most difficult part was getting back to turn in the quest, as there are leet giants and elementals all over the place at first, then some animals and humanoids as well. I didn't know what to track! :)

This is how it happened for ME as a level 53 hunter w/ bear...

I took down the coords written here and took into consideration the "stay close to the tower" bit but that didn't work for me at all. That and I couldn't find hardly ANY wavethrashers (or young wavethrashers) at 82.10 nor 88.28 ...
I had the best luck in the water by the tower (but farther out)... around 85.38 ...

A few things to watch out for:
-lots of other crap in the area like crawlers and murky things as well as the crab-men... most likely you'll end up having to kill lots of those just to get to the wavethrashers which imo is really annoying

-IF YOU CAN TRACK, the wavethrashers are beasts, NOT dragonkin like I first assumed.

Took me forever to do this pain in the arse quest.. and after 3 hours, and -32 speed swimming and lots of noggenfogger elixirs(really helped since I had ran out of waterbreathing elixir), I found the prime spot, Jagged Reef; drop rate there was great and so were the turtle scales from skinning the coralshell lurkers. coords are 84,24 north east portion of the map you will see on your map what looks like a light house, go for it no need for swimming to get to this local either, no jumping to your death.. just ride.. Yeah run/swim round to the point of the headland. The spawn rate off the Tower of Eldara is much better. I swam around for about 15min, found 2. Ran up to 90,36 ish and found 4 in the water waiting to get pwn'd.

I found a nice concentration of em' at 89,26 with a respawn time of about 10 minutes or so. To reach the shore you have to head straight East from Ursolan (44,26) otherwise it's all cliffs unless you get to the shore from inside the Ruins of Elderath.

I found them south again, I followed a path down from where I had the courser quests to the lighthouse area (there are two gnomes, one sells trade supplies, the other is blacksmithing) and there were a few of the thrashers in the water. I've killed 7 and gotten 4 scales so I think I'll stay in that area, no one else seems to go there and the majority of other mobs are turtles who won't attack you.

Stay with the 89 33 tip. I started at 70 7 (found one there) but did not find any more till I got to 90 26 near Tower of Eldera. The drop rate there was about 50%. You will also find a few a bit out to sea and the respawn rate is good so it sould take 20 minutes or so to get the 6 scales needed for the quest. I just killed the other mobs to keep the beach clear, they are fairly easly (one at a time) at level 50.

My personal suggestion is this, head to the northern tip of the clifs to a place called tower of eldara. If you swim there you will run into a handful but watch out for the giants. By land you can walk down to the beach when you get to the point and there are several wavethrashers on the beach rather than hunting them out, one at a time in the water =)

I killed bout 10, and got 4.. The last 2 was found in the last 2 mobs.. Rly.. There were most Wavethrashers round Tower of Eldara, although I got to 75 kills before all 6 was acquired.. Worst quest since the one in Hillsbrad called Helcular's Rod.. :P

Only do this q if u think the reward is worth it..

Once you have it targeted with /target wavethrasher, cast hunter's mark. If you're close enough, it'll show up on the map and you can go right to it. (thanks to Varrock on Argent Dawn for this idea)

after reading *most of the post here, i tried the swimming up to that tower, died when ganged, not a fun quest, cant get to where u need, the only way i found down to the beach was to jump to my death

not worth it, too much cost for repair, really bad quest i dont advise anyone to do it

oh and before anyone says why didnt you ask bla blah....i did ask in general chat....no response as usual. I found that it's better not to ask anyone for any help at all in wow because the responses i get are 99.99% of the time very rude and insulting. I have not played wow for years and years, i'm not some bored level 70 just there to make it misarable for new players like myself. I have to usually turn off the chat channels and try to muttle thru with what i know, or read forums like this for any help.

Just did this in Classic, took about 15 kills to get 6 scales. Around the tower of Eldara at 80,20 was perfect. Level 50, hardest part was running past the 54 Elites to get there.

I was going to vote this in the top ten Classic WoW annoying quests after about 20 mins and getting a single scale (despite some posts in this thread saying how easy it was lol). Then I got a handle on it and did the rest in less than 30 mins.

I was questing at the North end of the map as the other posts said this was the best area.

The mobs are mostly under the water, I only saw a couple on land so you will be swimming a lot. They are not exactly numerous either so it can be a reasonable delay before you find the next one (swimming is sooooo slow).

I strongly recommend you get a water breathing potion. This saved me ages swimming round on the surface/just below the surface/trying not to drown fighting and collecting loot and made it much easier to find the mobs.

If you don't want to spend the money on a water breathing potion then be warned, some of the mobs are quite deep and you have to be almost right over them to be in target range.

The Wavethrashers do not track. As a hunter used to tracking everything this was very frustrating! So I made a macro to target and then put a skull on the mobs.

This works for both normal and Young versions. Just swim round and spam it, saved me a lot of time and frustration.

The Young Wavethrashers seem to be more prevalent at the very North end of the beach and unlike other posts I didn't notice the drop rate being any better/worse than the "Adult" Wavethrashers.

Hope this helps if, like me, you are finding this quest to be a pain.

This is literally one of the worst quests in the game. There seems to be something really wrong going on with the spawns, combined with the low drop chance, at least in the North-eastern part. Sometimes they just dont respawn for a really long time.

Felt compelled to comment based on these other comments, especially after expecting the worst. I finished this quest in ~9 or so kills.

I went around the Southeastern tip from the Naga beach, was about to turn north and swim across the way but turned the corner and found Great Wavethrashers. First 2 kills dropped scales, and the other 4 followed quickly after. I followed the coast south and around and there were a TON of Great Wavethrashers ripe for the killing. I did have to drown and spirit rez to avoid a walk back, but overall this was incredibly easy.

Either the droprate was changed or the Great Wavethrashers are the key?

Went near the tower in NE corner of Azshara, /way 86, 25

Cleared Hydras in area, used eagle eye to scout up and down the coast in the water to find more hydras, swam towards them once spotted.

Drop rate seemed to be roughly ~40% for me.

Did this at 57. Best place was at 100, 23 and a little South at 84, 40 in the water. I found 5-6 of these guys back to back. So make sure you check the WATER and not just the coast. Good luck! Hope this helps :-)

Don't get fooled by all these map markers, there aren't nearly as many of these mobs around as they imply. Questie has false data as well. At most places there isn't a single one, so have fun swiming around searching for them. I took a whole trip from the very south to the very north along the beach and found perhaps 10 (Beast Tracking enabled and swimming, so I am sure I didn't miss them). Got 2 of the quest items from this one trip in like 20 minutes, before I aborted the quest and HS out. Waste of time, strong candidate for worst quest of entire classic.

This quest was a giant pain in the nethers. Many people have said to get a water-breathing potion, I agree. I didn't and I regretted it, the quest took me way longer than necessary. My best farming spot was on the southeastern tip in the deep water, farming the Great Wavethrashers.
Also, the drop rate was poor, around 25-30%.

I'm at the extreme southeast part (after a brutal travel to get here) and I've been here for 20 minutes swimming around looking for a wavethrasher. There are none. I haven't seen a single one anywhere here. There's nobody else around, so it's just me. There are no wavethrashers. Not one. There's supposed to be some all over the place. There are none. Not a single one.
I'm not sure why Blizzard thinks that it's a good idea to make people kill things that already have the worst drop rate possible, and not have any of the mobs to kill.

There are no wavethrashers in the southeast. Not a single one.

I just took a little more than an hour to complete this quest at level 58 with Greater Waterbreathing elixir. I killed approx 23 wavethrashers including a couple Great Wavethrasers (level 54) and I don't suggest doing this quest at much lower level or without waterbreathing. Fewer mobs will aggro on you as you swim by including murlocks, makkrinni and so on. I started by making my way down the cliff from the quest giver, going out and swimming north along the coastline, riding back down along coast while there was beach - and the wavethrashers ARE found on beaches too! - then swimming south. The questie markers were fairly accurate note that both maps show there are no wavethrashers along most of the middle stretch of the Bay of Storms which is what I saw. Cannot stress enough that beast tracking and water breathing potion were both vital this was tedious enough without having to watch a breath timer. Picked up 4 spinefin halibut, 23 zesty clam meat, and 1 lustrous pearls from the thrashers and whatever aggro'd on me.

With many of us Classic peeps utilizing Questie, I wanted to share that it's better to swim a lot further out into the water (before the fatigue area) and do NOT rely on the Questie markers; otherwise you may be searching a LONG time - BUT - as others have said, right around Tower of Eldara (91.59, 35.84) I found 4 Wavethrashers alone :)

It took 13 Wavethrashers killed to get the 6 required scales for me. No other loot worth mentioning.

Lvl 51 Hunter: Pretty straightforward; just jumped down from the QG, rode to the water and started swimming northeast. Encountered a few on the way, sending my pet (doesn't need to breathe) then finishing off from the surface with ranged. By the time I hit the beach by Bitter Reaches I was done.

Use eagle eye to scan the water (they can spawn out near to the fatigue zone)

I submitted a Screenshot of the location I found the most mobs (on day 2) That location was /way 45.1, 13.7 to /way 47.0, 0.3 to /way 52.8, 3.5 in a loop pretty much.
I just kept completing the circuit in the North to NE area of Azshara, it looks like Fatigue area but it never struck me and I was there for roughly 20 mins to get 4 drops.

The previous day I was along the coast & central Azshara and only got 2 drops over roughly 2 hours.

It seems like all the mobs with the drops are hiding out in the far ends of the water, but the drop rate seemed to be worth the swim.
Also, they did seem to drop more from Young Wavethrashers, idk if it was just me though.
