This quest used to require players to loot a key fragment from each of the gatekeepers. Because each boss only dropped a single key fragment, and not one for each player, players were usually required to trade the fragments to one another in order to complete the quest (and to advance any farther through the instance).

Trading is impossible in cross-realm groups, which is likely why this quest was changed to require a kill of each Gatekeeper rather than the key itself.
