Head to the front gates of Stormwind, then go fish down in the moat.

Some casts will net the usual catfish and minnows from Stormwind waters, but on others you will receive a Royal Monkfish.

Every time you catch one, open your bags and right-click the fish to "filet" it. Sometimes you'll get gray items like Rusty Keys or Slimy Rings. Eventually, you'll get the needed Precious Locket.

This one took a bit longer than I expected.

Out of 63 fish caught, 18 were Monkfish. 18/63 = 28.5% chance of Monkfish

18 Monkfish = 9 Rusty Keys, 8 Slimy Ring (gray items) and finally 1 locket. 1/18 = 5.5 %

It's possible I just had very bad luck. Anyone else getting far better or worse results?

Worst fishing daily quest ever!don't bother it with!
After 13 Slimy rings and 11 set of rusty keys, the damn locket finally dropped
Maybe it was my bad luck

this will be the one to skip!

My experience of the first time for this quest:

Recived the Precious Locket on catch number 151 taking about 50 minutes total.

Skill 450 + 33 (Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole with +3 Fishing Line).

Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper: 71
Raw Brilliant Smallfish: 14
Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish: 18
Royal Monkfish: 48
Slimy Ring: 25
Set of Rusty Keys: 22

I don't have a problem with a little farming for a Daily Quest, but this was rediculious.

Absolutely the worst daily quest ever.

This quest on average will take much longer time to finish as compare to any weekly raid quest. And it needs more focus and concentration also.

And at the end, you will get 7 gold and some pieces of craps.

Easy quest in my opinion. Fishing 446 + 23 (Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole & Truesilver Fishing Line). 4 tries, 2 Royal Monkfish. Got it in the second monkfish.

This quest can take a very long time. Took me 108 casts and 17 filleted Royal Monkfish for the Locket to drop.

Can be completed as an apprentice fisherman without lures

Initial skill level 17 final level 64. Of the 47 casts all but 14 bought up junk. 8 of those 14 were Royal Monkfish.

It would appear that even though the item is not unique, if you have a Royal Monkfish in your bags you will be unable to catch another one until you fillet it. I just tired to see if I could do a little "mindless fishing" while reading forums an catch a few of them to use after a while. Doesn't work.

Does the Bag of Shiny Things kinda bite or what? So far my take from three fishing bags is about 5 silver (total for the three of them). At 80 the 7g40s and the fishing skillup are fine so I can't figure out what's the point of the Bag.

Has anyone gotten anything worthwhile from the Bag of Shiny Things?

Read through the posts the first time I got this quest and thought, "oh no!" Then, after getting the locket in the first few casts each time I did the quest, thought, "that's not so bad!" Until today:

56+ casts yielded:
-30 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
-14 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
-11 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
-17 Royal Monkfish w/ Slimy Ring
-13 Royal Monkfish w/ Set of Rusty Keys
- 1 Royal Monkfish w/ Precious Locket

Thank goodness I have a pet that eats fish!

I had to catch 49 Royal Monkfish to find the Precious Locket. I didn't keep track of all my casts and catches, but needless to say I was fishing for a good hour. The Bag of Shiny Things contained 74 copper, an Empty Snail Shell, and a Bright Baubles. So for my effort I was awarded the 7 gold and bag full of crap.

Now that I've completed this step of the Fish or Cut Bait achievement, I won't be doing this quest again.

So I agree, worst daily ever :(

This is simply ridicilous...
Got it in my 29nth royal monkfish....with a droprate of around 30% that's near 90 throws.
Simply ridicilous and I will not bother do this quest more than once untill the droprate have been fixed.

That comes down to 82 casts.
Out of 82 casts I fished up 28 Royal Monkfish. That's a 34.15% drop rate.
Out of those 28 Royal Monkfish I obtained 1 Precious Locket. That's a 3.57% drop rate.
Also, 1/82 (my 1 precious locket divided by my 82 casts) is about .0121

So I had about a 1.21% chance to get the locket each cast

EDIT: BIG mistake. the monkfish are caught only with other fish, so my casts were actually 28 less. 82-28 = 54

So the numbers again are
Drop rate of Royal Monkfish: 28/54 = 51.85%
Drop rate of Precious Locket from filleting a Royal Monkfish: 1/28 = 3.57%
Drop rate of Precious Locket from casts: 1/54 = 1.85%

So about a 1.85% chance to get the locket each cast. Not even that much better.

Of course since then I did it on my alt and got the locket on my 9th cast. :-P

FYI: You MUST have 2 BAG SPACES when opening the Monkfish. If not you can fish for hours and not get the locket.

Got it after 27 keys and 21 rings...

Royal Monkfish has a fair drop rate but I believe Medaglione Prezioso was not supposed to have drop rate to multiply your pain inside Monkfish.

Alright I finally got to the bottom of this thing!

all non-shamans and DK's, buy yourself elixir of water walking

you have to fish under the arches of the stormwind bridge, the closest possible to the city

your drop rate of monkfish should then be of 50%. I'm getting the locket out of my 5th-10th monkfish then

I was as frustrated as you before: the trick is really to fish under the arches and nowhere else!

Using the following macro for fishing will keep you from having to hunt through your bags for the fish:

#showtooltip Fishing
/use Royal Monkfish
/cast Fishing

If a Royal Monkfish is in your bags it will fillet it, otherwise it will cast for the next fish.

One thing to watch out for:

i did this with exacty two spaces free in my bag - one for the Monkfish and one when filletted for the key / ring / locket

after a hundred or so fish i tried emptying my bags some more

the locket drops in addition to key / ring, you need atleast two bag spaces free once the monkfish is caught to complete the quest.

No error message is given warning you of this.

Guys, I have suspicion that doing this quest successfuly needs at least 3 free slots in your bags. I was doin it like 1 hour w/ only two. Either Im really unlucky or its just true. Point is even when locket drops, another grey item key/ring drops too.. so it needs another slot. If you have trouble doin this, better check your bags for free slots.

As of 14 Dec 2010 the drop rate was increased. This is in the patch notes:

The droprate on the Precious Locket from Royal Monkfish in Stormwind waters for the Fishing daily quest "Big Gulp" has been increased.

To be clear, you do not need high level skill for any part of it. I started at 1 skill and when I got it I was 16.
(btw, I dont think its neccessary for everyone to cast their results. It's random, you can get it at first or hundred and first)

This quest hates my server. Almost a month since release of it and we have never had it come up and I check it daily. My achievement sits uncompleted.

edit: 12/23/10 is the first time is was offered finally. Only took Blizzard a full month to get it to come up.

All the blogs that say empty your bags are correct. Had two slots open and fished for almost and hour and then read the comments - emptied my bags to 8 open slots and on the first cast got the locket

Was just about to give up on my 7th fish and bingo! People, the only thing more boring then casting 80 times is writing on this forum that you cast it 80 times. Just leave it. But I guess its always in one's mind: "Maybe it will be there if I caste one more time it will be there."

Call it beginners luck, call it want you want. This was my first fishing daily, I haver a grand total of 40 in fishing. I flew down to the moat, cast my line approxiamtely 2.3 meters into the water, and caught one Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper and one Royal Monkfish. I had been reading the comments on here so i thought "oh well, I guess I wont get any locket from this one." And I think you all know how the story is going to end. I got the locket on my first try. GJ? I guess ^^

I fished for the locket for about 30 minutes with only two spots open in my inventory. I read in the comments it might have something to do with bag space so I went back to SW and got rid of a bunch of stuff. Went back to fishing and the locket popped up my 3rd cast.

May have nothing to do with bag space and was maybe just a fluke but whenever I do this quest again I will do it with lots of clear space in my bags :)

I got about 18 of these fishes and it still didnt drop but I had just one free slot so I put few items to the bank and then it dropped on the first time, so maybe it will help you.

After 44 fish I gave up... then I tried another daily quest and couldn't do it. I then realized I was in a raid group the whole time. After smashing my face onto the keyboard a few times I left the raid group and caught the quest item on my third cast. Raid groups are OP.

Today was my first attempt at this with my lvl 23 mage. I started with a skill level 1 and caught one monkfish at skill level 26. He had the locket.

I am posting this to encourage anyone starting fishing that you can accomplish this daily. Good luck and Happy Killing!
