For the record, this is the Alliance version of the quest, with the exception of death knights. Unlike other characters, who receive their Champion dailies from the Argent Crusade, death knights work for the Knights of the Ebon Blade. The other versions of the quest, which all share the same name, are:

Aside from faction and specific quest NPCs, the different versions are identical. The division makes sense in game, but it means strategies and comments end up spread across the Wowhead database. If the advice for this particular version doesn't work for you, you may want to take a look at the others.

For still more information, there's also the related daily "At The Enemy's Gates", which is the equivalent for Valiants. It too is divided into different quests, one for each city:

Keep in mind that as of 3.2, there is no overlap in mobs between the Champion and Valiant quests. Champions kill the Boneguard Commander, while Valiants kill the Boneguard Footman, Boneguard Scout, and Boneguard Lieutenant. They're just in the same general area.

If I could give an advice here, here it is.
Immediatelly after completing the quest of becoming champion, Get back to the tent where the quartermasters are, start a new serie of Tournament for other city, and take all the daily quests you can from them.
After you do this, get to the Argent Dawn tent from where you can get the dailies for the Champion' seals.
Do this because there are two quests that have similiar or the same objective.

The same objective, That means you will only have to kill the 15 scourges instead of 25 by doing it separately.

Similiar objective, only different in replacing the 15 footmans by killing the one commander. It's usefull to take both since the scouts are annoying to kill and you will only have to kill 10 of them to get credit for both quests, same with liutenants. When you'll be killing those, you will surely ride over some footmans which wil count towards the quest too. So It' a lot easier, and you will do four annoying quests in two.

Some of you are saying for yourself now something like : Why should I want to be champion for more than one faction?
Easy answer :

- Option to buy a mount for 100x seals that is available only for champions of the race.
- New vanity pets, tabards, banners.
And the main, lots of fun! I enjoy doing the quests killing other NPCs on the mount, And you'll have the abilitty to do it twice every day now!

Something I noticed with my hunter that other hunters (and possibly other classes, such as warriors) should take note of. After doing some testing to confirm it, if you jump on your Argent Horse and you have Aspect of the Viper active, your Shield Break ability will only do 60% damage. For example, Shield Break was only doing 6000 damage vs. the scouts, instead of the 10000 damage it should normally do. I presume any other class that has a passive ability that reduces their damage such as a warrior's Defensive Stance, that the damage would also be lowered the proper amount. Just a small thing that can make a difference, especially against the commanders. Any other aspect (or no aspect for that matter) does regular damage. I did not notice any change in damage with the charge ability, so it appears to only affect Shield Break. I invite other people to corroborate my findings, and I would be interested to hear if it does indeed affect other classes.

As mentioned here by Jediomed, the easiest way for me to fight the commanders is to pull one up the stairs.

Also, if you're lazy and suck as bad as I do, start with full shields (as usual) and just stand in front of him spamming Thrust and Defend until he tries to back away, then charge him. It takes a while, but it works.

Note for warriors: Use Battle stance because the stance modifiers apply to the mount . Battle Stance, Berserker Stance, Defensive Stance.

I found this out by killing the Boneguard Scout, in Defensive stance it takes me 3 shots to kill them where as in Battle stance it only takes 2. I don't recommend Berserker Stance because you don't want to take more damage while killing the Commander.

Note that you can use Thrust on scouts who don't fly too high if you jump at the right time. Makes the killing of scouts really quick since Thrust and Shield Breaker don't share the same cooldown.

Criteria have changed: you now have to kill 3 Commanders only, removing any overlap with At the Enemy's Gates.

As of the latest patch, there are a lot more Boneguard Commanders around, and they're not all at the same place (as opposed to previously, when they were all ganged up before the stairs).

There are three (one standing still, two patrolling) at the top of the stairs, for instance, that can easily be taken down on your own, as there are no Scouts or other adds around to make problems. (You could pull one of the Pustulent Horrors, but with your 90% damage decreased buff from the shield they should not be a problem.)

I've still seen some people having trouble with this, so here is a quick and easy way to kill the commanders:

Pick one of the commanders around the edge, or patting (so you don't accidentally pull a lieutenant as well).
Start with 3 stacks of shield (of course).
Start by charging them, and as you do spam thrust so you get a thrust in while you pass them.
Once you're past them, turn and strafe away from them so you can get far enough away to shield breaker on them.
As soon as the shield breaker goes off, get back in melee range and thrust them again.
Then get back out of range to charge, rinse and repeat.

With this method you can completely ignore: whatever the commander is doing, your shield charges, and the annoying scouts.
It's a complete shock and awe style of doing it, it might take a little time to get it perfect but once you do it's so much faster than the "proper" way of doing it.

After having numerous difficulties facing off against the Commander's without accidentally pulling one or more Boneguard Scout into the battle, I found that the easiest and safest way to do this quest was to the pull the Commander's who flank either side of the path on the eastern end of The Court of Bones, next to the entrance of Malykriss: The Vile Hold. In this location, there is a large open space, and the Scout's are far enough back that you have enough room to run circles around the Commander's without fear of pulling any adds. The only thing that you have to worry about is getting too close to Malykriss, as the Commander will reset if you do. A third Commander also pat's up to this location, so finishing the quest here will only take a matter of minutes. I hope his helps others who've been having difficulties not pulling adds :)

If at all possible, find someone to party up with for this quest. Granted, it's possible to solo the commanders, but it's 10x faster and less frustrating to have a second person at range, keeping the commander's Defend at zero with shield breakers and taking care of any scout adds. Otherwise you tend to find that, by the time you've got him to half health, a scout or two respawns and completely nails you.

Of all the non-group-tagged quests I can think of, this one benefits the most from bringing in an extra person.

It doesn't i repeat doesn't count if you are in a raid group so don't inv more then 6 ppl.
Otherwise you can easy solo it but in a group is it quicker done.

I've just gotten in the habit of skipping this quest altogether. It's nearly impossible to do without pulling roaming scouts. Even if you clear the area of scouts beforehand it seems that they have such a quick respawn time that they'll catch you in the middle of your fight with the commander. It's extremely irritating unless you're grouped. At least for me, that kind of headache isn't worth one Champion's Seal.

Post Cataclysm Update:
If you are still doing this at 80+ (for pets & mounts perhaps), this is eminently soloable, because there is probably not going to be anybody to group with. The best way I've found to solo it these days is to start from the camp and head towards the Icecrown Citadel stairs.
When you get to the first Commander in front of the main wad, kill the scouts around the edges and try to pull the group of footmen in front of the Commander and kill them w/o pulling the Commander. You can fight them all at the same time, but the footmen will eat your shields like crazy and make it a much tougher fight.
Then when you fight the Commander, try to stay on the main path, very few scouts spawn on top of the path itself, they are mostly around the edges. If the Commander runs off the path, throw a javelin, and run towards the other side of the path, and charge when he gets back on it.
Continue and kill the 2 Lieutenants on the 2nd row.
Pull the excess footmen and kill them.
Throw a Javelin at one of the Commanders in the next row, and pull it out to you. Fight it in the same manner as the 1st, then kill the 3rd one.
If you take too long, you may get some respawns of the Lieutenants and footmen, so watch out for those.

If for some reason you cannot kill the commanders with the mount, yes these also count without the mount. (takes me 15 minutes each with lvl 85 pala which normally does 5k dps)

Edit: My reason was too much lag (1200ms)

Yeah, I wouldn't bother trying to kill these guys on foot unless you really and truly just cannot stand the mount.

As a raid geared Retribution Paladin I can put out a steady 17k DPS and burst as high as 25k and it took me five minutes to kill just one.

Granted you loose up time with all their moving around and such but still, if you're capable with a mount you can kill each in under a minute.

They also still kinda hurt, the one I was fighting got me down to about half HP over the course of those five minutes. Nothing a class with healing spells can't handle but could get iffy for others.

this is by far THE most annoying quest in the whole Wrath expansion

no doubt about it.

no matter where you pull the commanders, the scouts will spawn.
in the middle of the path, off the path alltogether, anywhere.

you can clear em before, but their respawn rate is worse than fleas on a dead cat.

the bloody gargoyles will spawn, your shields will be gone and for the 346387698312st time, your mount will die.

pulling them to the stairs will give you a warning that you left the field of battle and all the mobs disappear, including those you need to kill.

WARNING: this quest will lead to smashed keyboards, pulverized mouses and broken flatscreens

avoid at all cost. period.

Charge them as much as you can. This does damage the quickest.

I have latency issues (lag), so I rarely win while mounted against a commander. (I lose two stacks of shield to one shield breaker nearly every time.) However, as long as I can get them down to around 20% health or less, it only takes a few minutes to kill them once my mount has died.

If you decide to do this one first on a given day DO NOT forget to grab a lance from the grounds. Blizz finds great fun in watching you trek all the way back across the zone instead of simply placing a lance rack there with all the mounts.

While I agree this is annoying, I don't think that its as bad as you are making out.
I am not an above average player.
I certainly needed to get better at jousting - hence the practice with valiants and champions.
I couldn't even kill the commanders until I was a champion.
I always do the 3 valiants and 4 champions at the tournament grounds before any of the other quests, just to get warmed up to the jousting.

If I get bothered by one, and only one scout/gargoyle, I can usually handle it. You have to kill the scout before returning to the commander. Two (or more) scouts/gargoyles cause me a huge headache.

I always go for the commander who marches in front of the base camp, from west to east.
I try to kite them to the west of the base camp because there is room to maneuver and fewer scouts.
If you are willing to wait the 5 mins or so for that npc to respawn, you can just do that npc three times. You may even be able to catch it just as it respawns and its shields are not fully charged.

I have had some limited success with the other commander who marches from east to west. I have more problem with scouts with that particular npc.

I believe it also makes a difference if you are soloing this at lvl 80 vs lvl 85.
If this is too hard to do at 80, maybe finish up the Cataclysm questing before you start doing this.

I have also been doing this while I have been championing every race in my faction. I come here to do the valiant's daily and clearing out that stuff gives me a break between commandeers. I may feel very different when I only have 3 commandeers to do. But it is worth 2 champion seals.

UPDATE : I have been doing this quest since I finished championing all the races.
It is worth 2 seals and I would like to get things (mounts, pets, etc) that much faster. I can get 14 seals a day by questing.
Having gone through this for a month or so, here is my advice.
Shield Breaker (2), and Thrust (1) when close up are your bread and butter. Charge is nice if there are no Scouts (gargoyles).

The three I try to get are
1) the npc who marches directly in front of the camp, going from west to east and back west again. If possible try to kite him to the west of the camp where you do have room to charge.

2) The npc is the SE corner of the region. You may need to kill a scout or two.
The npc is isolated with only his footmen.
I try to start by riding behind this npc and then attacking.
The area is fairly clear of of other stuff so you have room to maneuver.

3) Now I go north toward the road and get another commander who is also off alone with his footmen.
I am still in the southern section.
Again attack from behind.

Try to keep the npcs closer to you.
Then can attract Scouts and its easier without having to mess with them.

In general, this takes me less than 10 minutes to complete.

To me, trying to kill a wild wyrm by your hands - Sons of Hodir daily (Thrusting Hodir's Spear)
or riding the Jorgumar to kill the Iron Colossus (The Iron Colossus)
were much more difficult.

There is a couple of commanders, each with a platoon of foot skeletons, patroling the road just outside the camp. Lure a commader with your shield breaker back to the camp and a field beyond located between the entrance and the camp. There you have a quite large space with no Boneguard scouts, so no one is gonna disturb you.

Funny thing about this, argent "peacekeepers" are so much peaceful so they wont help you. They will be just staying there and watching your fight - in peace...

You know I thought that when I became a champion it would get easier. But Nooooooo! trying to kill these commanders is like trying to pull your own teeth, it sucks! I had no trouble killing the lieutenants. None at all, I become a champion and have to kill the commanders and WHAT! I can't seem to do more than half damage to them without getting my mount killed and having to get another. Then their health is full again! Screw this quest, the others are right it's not worth it at all!

Just a few tips:

When you're going against these NPCs on your argent mount, charge is extremely useful. It does the most damage (at least in my experience), it's quick, it takes off one shield layer and the cooldown is pretty fast. I'd suggest starting combat with shield breaker, running to the side where you go the fastest speed in an away direction while still facing your opponent, using charge, using your mouse to swing the camera around and striking with your lance, then going outward and charging again (by that time the cooldown would reset). At least I find this to be the quickest route.

For the boneguards, charge can one-hit groups of them if you go straight at 'em.

For the gargoyle thingamajigs, I'd suggest using charge too if they're low enough to the ground to one hit them. If they're higher up, use shield breaker while running up to them to strike with the lance. If you do it that way rather than using shield breaker twice, they won't have time to get a single hit on you.

So...yep. Oh, and the shield breaker/charge/lance strat for the commanders works just as well on valiant/champion opponents on the tournament grounds, at least in my experience. Hope this helps.

This is where you can learn to use crowd control and see your dps against boss level crowds. We don't need no stinking badges! I'm Robin of the Hood. Try a fox against the croud of low level targets, then multi-shot, drop a trap and try for your best shot rotation. But only after your partner on the horse shield breaks. 2 and 3 partner pvp training ground. Finding out how fast can you clear the gateway is a measurable amount. I like how the one "Commander" wanders of the board and reappeared without his mob by another gateway there. Just magic I guess. Moths against the flying casters looks really cool as you dance a boss level target to death.
444, 12, 2, 4, 23... is just not for me; but that being said... you could do it that way. The fact that it is available at 77 and is just as challanging at 85 makes the loot less important. Soloing this quest at 85 with little repair cost is also a measurable skill here.

Just in case anyone was wondering, at 85, you CAN just kill them without using the horse and still get credit. But the commanders are a pain in the ass to kill with all of their armor, so I don't know which way is easier :P

Ok so for this quest you need to equip your lance and mount a horse around cords 49,71 (not exact cords but in that area) it's in a camp. Do yourself a favor and do this, as I learned this is the much easier way. You CAN go kick the crap out of the Boneguard Commanders using your weapons and abilities but it takes awhile due to the shields around them (I learned this the hard way) so if you want to make this fast and easy go get the mount, or if you are looking for a "challenge" charge up on foot and kick the crap out of them XD

i agree this is the most annoying quest! I completed it many times and I still get annoyed everytime. This is what I do, in case it helps anybody:
Usually I do Battle Before The Citadel and At The Enemy's Gates together. The most annoying is the Boneguard Scout, which respawn and attack breaking your defenses continously. So my strategy is to avoid them by any mean. For that, I found some spots where you are a bit more relax.
One Boneguard Commander is always the one at (49,73) next to the camp. You can aggro him to follow inside the camp where no scouts are and kill him. If you have already some experience in the Argent Tournament, you shouldn't have problems with it. Simply, melee attack and recharge your shields, and when the enemy runs away, break his shields and charge on him. If you are about to lose, you can cross the gate behind the camp and repeat the fight.
The second spot is near the gate at (54,73). Here there are Commanders at both sides of the path, on the top of a hill. The Scouts are towards the center of the field. You can aggro each of them so you fight near the gate. Remember not to cross the gate or you will have to restart the fight. Also, if the Commanders runs too close to a Scout, don't chase him or charge. Just keep your shields up and wait till he comes. If you fight next to the gate, you will fight him alone.
With this hopefully you just need to take care of the Boneguard Lieutenant. They are in formation together with other Commanders so the trick is to charge the Lieutenants in such a way that you don't aggro the rest. Getting rid of the Boneguard Footman is easy but requires you to move around with your horse to kill them fast.
I hope this tactic can also help you, guys ;-P

In the Court of Bones in southwestern Icecrown, a few brave crusaders have set up a forward camp on the southern side of Corp'rethar. Equip your lance and mount the stabled campaign charger at the camp, then destroy the Lich King's commanders.

Do not fear the masses of boneguard footmen, <name>, for they can easily be trampled under your horse's hooves.
