Sadly, the Black Knight will likely be your least challenging opponent in the Argent Tournament. However, it does have a gotcha that may cause you problems. The fight is in two phases. Equip your lance, jump on the Stabled Argent Warhorse, and then talk to Squire Cavin. He'll call the knight out for you and you'll fight him on his gryphon using standard jousting tactics. When he's low on health, he will dismount and call you out for hand to hand contact. Do nothing to dismount yourself. When you see him dismount, that is not your cue to unequip your lance or get off your own mount. The game will do that for you and if you try to do it yourself the black knight will probably evade and despawn. While he's buffing himself you will have time to equip your normal weapons. Then just fight him as you would any other non-elite mob.

Edit: Apparently it's possible to kill him while he's still on his gryphon. I personally witnessed this happen once and have heard a couple other reports of the same behavior. Normally he will jump off and face you in hand-to-hand combat, however.

If you do this in a group, you will all get credit - and you can damage the Black Knight even if you're not mounted.

A guildie started it, I invited him to a group- he fought mounted and I just DPS'd, and we both got credit.

Both the Black Knight & his mount have only 50k HP.

The fight starts with the Black Knight on his gryphon (the one you hijacked earlier). He runs into the arena...with no stacks of defend and is HORRIBLE at fighting. The Argent Champion fight is a lot tougher.

If you down him fast enough, he won't force you into the dismount fight. He'll just keel over. If you do that, it's a hilariously anticlimactic battle.

If you've made it to this point, you should be good enough at fighting to where you can beat him easily.

Stack up your defend before you talk to the squire.... he was dead before he ever dismounted and I got quest credit for it.

Note that you must use the "Stabled Argent Warhorse" to finish this. I tried four times riding my Warstrider and the game would not auto-dismount me after the Black Knight did. If I dismounted manually he would evade and then despawn.

Edit: The above problem has apparently been fixed in 3.1.1 and you can't summon unless you are riding the Argent Warhorse.

Other than this it's probably the easiest fight ever. The Black Knight puts up no defenses. Just get yours up to three, Charge him, hit him with your melee attack, and when he moves away to charge you, Charge him first and repeat.

So, you beat The Black Knight on horseback, and he challenges you to fight him man to man? You do just that, but then he runs to the center of the ring and disappears?

I just found out how to keep him from doing that.

After he challenges you to fight him off your mounts, do not dismount on your own, do not change your weapons, do not do ANYTHING. After he is done yelling, you will be AUTOMATICALLY dismounted... allow that to happen, and then the fight will begin. That's when it's safe to switch from your lance to your usual weapon.

The horse you need is along the Keep wall right outside the Champion's Circle. NOT outside your faction's tent like the other mounts.

Patch 3.1.1 fixed an issue where you could summon and fight the Black Knight using a mount other than the Argent Warhorse. Many people were using the Forsaken/Stormwind Warhorses which caused him to despawn when Phase 1 completed.

You need to be mounted on the Argent Warhorse now or you won't even get the option from the Squire to challenge him. Other than that, he's a simple joust and he didn't even put up a shield when I did it.

I just learned that if you kill him fast enough (Normally accomplished by doing an Charge + Thrust), he'll totally skip the non mounted combat phase, just flops over dead, lol. You still get credit through, I did want to see what would of happened otherwise, so I just abandoned the quest, and than redone it with not killing him as fast.

I just killed him today. I summoned him using Squire while I was on the horse, and I didnt actually ever dismounted. I started and finished the fight on my horse, opposed to what people say that you finish him fighting him normally on the ground. I guess it was a bug or sth.

i can confirm he can be killed before he dismounts.

Do not confuse the text reading "Argent Charger" for the mount "Argent Warhorse". A friend of mine ran around for about 20 minutes trying to find an Argent Charger. The Argent Warhorse located next to the Champions' Ring is the appropriate mount for this quest.

In summary:

1. You must be a champion of your home city before you can fight the Black Knight.
2. You must be mounted on the Argent Warhorse, near the flightmaster (in the Easternmost part of the long row of stables), and NOT your champion faction's mount, before you even get a chance to fight him.
3. You can't fight him while someone else is.
4. He's very, very, very, easy. Laughably easy. Maybe to go with the Black Knight from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie he's named after.
5. He sometimes dismounts and sometimes does not. It's unclear whether this is a timed or percentage-based thing. I watched 2 people fight him and he dismounted. When I fought him, he didn't. If he dismounts, DO NOT dismount yourself. You will automatically be dismounted. If he doesn't dismount, you still get credit: you don't need to fight him again.

Just as reported before, if you charge him at a certain health you will do enough damage to completely skip the unmounted phase... I found this out while running my normal rotation on him.

This guys was pathetic. I killed him before he dismounted from his gryphon and he's barely made a scratch on me.

He is faster than the other champions/valiants so you need to act fast but again, he's a pushover so don't be too worried. He'll enter from the gate at Squire Cavin and will not give you distance, so you will have to use the melee attack for a while. He will run off, at which point you charge him and then sunder shield or w/e when you're coming around. Rinse and repeat. And always have your 3 shields up.

Melee --> Charge (when he runs off) --> Sunder shield (while turning out of the charge) --> Melee...

The above is the best method I've found to defeat any champion/valiant.

Just completed this today, bugged when I dismounted and I still had my mount's hotbar. Luckily, my Tankadin buttons were still there so I just Sacred Shielded and beat on him with my lance. I'm sure he felt like an ass. :)

Found a odd thing from this quest.

If you choose never to hand this quest in then you get acsess to the arget warhorse for use in all your Tournamnet quests. While on it you can challenge champions and everything.

You will lose out on the Chillmaw quest and its rewards. But for those of you who dont care to much about those rewards or if you jsut like the Argent crusade then you can run around pretending to be a Arget crusader.

Its same as other mounts just looks different. Also you only get two flags on your back rather then a champions three.

Perosnally I like being a orc on what is basically a paladins basic mount ^^.

I have the quest and I am a champion (i have got the achievment). When I talk to Cavin, I don't have the option for him to summon the Black Knight. What do I do wrong? (I am self 79 lvl) .
I have using the "Stabled Argent Warhorse".
And nobody has fighting with him...

Am I the only one who dismounted manually and didn't have him bug out? I jumped off my mount when he challenged me, equipped my regular weapon, and beat him down with no problems. No evade bugging or anything. Yet it seems like everyone else who jumped off had a different experience.

I have done this quest 7 times now (I know I play WoW too much) and I didn't think anything of the first time I killed him before he dismounted, but the second time it was with my mage, who is female. Thinking back to the first time it happened I remembered it was with my priest, who is my only other female character to do it. It made me think of what he says when he dismounts ("fight me man to man" or something similar). Can anyone confirm/deny it happening on a male character? Would make sense (albeit very little) if it worked this way, or maybe it was just coincidence.

I don't know why, but I can't mount the Stabled Argent Warhorse. I can see it standing there with some other mounts at 72.22. I have my alliance lance equipped, but I just can't see the arrow when holding my mouse over the horse.

Anyone else encountering this problem`?

ok ok ok ... here's a new one.... when he dismounted, I was automatically dismounted... and all my toolbars disappeared. So, I started whacking on him with the lance by right-click-autoattacking, and I beat him with like 2% health.

Requirements to have Squire Calvin summon the Black Knight:
1 - Have the quest.
2 - Equip your Argent Lance (Horde Lance will not work).
3 - Be riding the Argent Warhorse near the Flight master.
4 - No one else is fighting him.

Requirement 2 is not mentioned thus far, prompting me to post.

I fought him, and killed him mounted on the steed, and while he was still on his gryphon.
He is actually really easy to defeat.
Grab an Argent Warhorse from the stable.
Buff up before you talk to Squire Cavin.
Once fully buffed, talk to Cavin, and ask for him to summon the Black Knight.
The Black Knight will appear from the stables area, and he will run to the center of the jousting ring. Don't follow him, just wait next to Cavin.
You are not able to attack him until he buffs, which only takes a few seconds.
The easiest strategy i have come across on all jousting duels, is to let the enemy run out to the center (which the black knight does right away), then once the enemy is attack-able, i immediately Charge him, run around in a sort of circle away from him, and then shield breaker him. That may seem confusing, but its just like attacking him, and while your horse is in its sprint after charging, just run around in a circle until you are right back next to him. While you are running in that circle, throw a Shield Breaker to take down another shield. After that just thrust him until he runs away again, but do not chase him, just simply wait for your charge to activate (or be in range sort of) and charge and reapeat the circle as mentioned above. Just repeat as needed.

If you didn't read what was above
1. Charge
2. Shield Breaker
3. Thrust until he runs again
continue to step 1 as needed.
This i believe is probably one of the best strategies for any duel in the tourney.
It can down a valiant in under a minute and the Black Knight took me 27 seconds.

I just did this and it did not dismount me automatically like the above posts state. After he yelled his thing about dismounting and fighting man to man, he buffed himself and ran to me and started whacking at me. I ended up just manually dismounting myself and re-equipping my weapon and was able to kill him normally, as if he had dismounted me himself.

Don't know if it is just a new bug or what, but just in case, if he doesn't dismount you by the time he starts attacking you, you can dismount yourself and be fine.

I'm getting pretty annoyed at this one today. First time I forgot and manually got off the mount, he ran away. Then the next time I remembered you usually had to let him dismount you, so I did that and he never dismounted me, so he ended up running away.

Wow this was dissapointing.
While hes mounted he can take about 4 charges before he falls, then he asks you to fight him man-to-man, thats where it gets promising.
Then you jump off you mount and he charges you and... well then you notice he has 12k hp and you 2 shot him and go collect your reward ._.

Waited for him to dismount and for me and then I changed wep and killed him in 5 seconds..

Second time I did the same but kept the Lance equiped and still didnt count...

oke just to be clear you need to talk to Squire Cavin (he is at the entrance of the fighting area) and he will summon the black knight.

This quest is currently broken it seems. After defeating the Black Knight in mounted combat he dismounts but at no time is the player automatically dismounted. And yes, I'm using the Stabled Argent Warhorse. You just sit there, on your warhorse, while he his you with his sword. If at any time you manually dismount he will despawn.

As you may know, tournament progression must be re-completed if you transfer factions. This quest can be picked up again but Cavin will not summon the Black Knight. Fret not. You still have your achievement from the previous run and completion is not required for access to the Champion dailies.

As an ally i had complete all the Argnt tournament quest and achivs but as any other functions change you lost some achivs about reputation only!
I still have the achiv ''Its just a flesh woond''!

Note: You need to be a Champion to pick up this Quest. I had just turned in the last quest as a mere Aspirant and wondered why I wouldn't get the follow up, you must be a champion to do so. The following taken from Blizzard Website:

Rise to a Champion:

While not all of the daily quests here involve mounted combat, it is the focus of the tournament. All participants will begin as an Aspirant and be given quests to let you practice the basic mechanics of mounted combat against target dummies.

Each of the daily quests you complete will reward you with an Aspirant’s Seal. After a couple days of practicing your skills you will be able to gather enough of these seals to challenge an NPC and should you succeed, you will attain the rank of valiant of your race’s respective home city.

As a valiant you will be given a similar set of daily quests to continue your training, each of these daily quests will reward you with a Valiant’s Seal and after enough days of practicing you will be ready for another challenge, if you complete this challenge you will become a champion of your city!

i was not getting auto dismounted. I ended up letting my horse get almost dead so that when he dismounted himself it wouldn't take long for him to "kill" my mount. In so doing this i was dismounted automatically and was able to equip my weapon and finish the quest.

Quick tip : don't dismount after he dismounts, if you do that he just grows a bit and vanishes. Let him dismount you.

In case this bugs for you, try this fix:

1) Mount up using the stabled warhorse.
2) Beat him in the duel and wait for him to dismount.
3) DO NOT dismount, the game should automatically do that for you.
4) If the game does not dismount you, DO NOT dismount manually. Stand there and let The Black Knight beat on you until he kills your mount.
5) You will then be dismounted, and can begin fighting him normally.

I tried this now, in patch 4.0 and he continually de-spawned and ran away.

((I also couldn't get him to dismount me, he hit for 500 on a horse with 50000hp))

So, I got on the mount with my lance and asked the squire to summon the Dark Knight, I then jumped off my mount and equipped my weapon, attacked him with regular spells until he jumped off of his mount.

Then he bubbled and attacked me without de-spawning, so I killed him and completed quest

As of patch 4.0.1, this seems to be bugged. Despite several attempts, the game won't auto-dismount me and if I dismount myself, the Black Knight evades and despawns. I'll try to confirm if it is actually bugged, or if I'm doing something wrong somewhere.

I did this today and he wouldn't dismount me, after reading that we should just let him kill our mount in phase 2 I decided to try, it takes forever for him to kill the mount so what I did was let him kill my mount on phase 1 (he'll kill it in 2 charges, as log as you don't put up any charges of the shield at the beginning), I was dismounted and proceeded to kill him (he was still mounted) he dismounted and entered phase 2 without bugging. It was a quick kill after as he doesn't have much hp

As of Oct 18, I tried this quest many times. I was not auto-dismounted. If I dismounted myself, the black knight would evade and despawn. I put in a bug report, and in the mean time I waited some five minutes to let him kill my horse. It worked.

Just completed quest on a new character today.

Verified that you are no longer auto-dismounted after fighting the BK while mounted, and that dismounting causes the BK to flee and despawn.

Let the BK lower your mount's health significantly before you dismount him in phase 1, then he will attack you a few times, doing 500-700 damage per swing, as long as your shields aren't active.

When the BK kills your horse, just equip your normal weapon and finish him off, easy peasy.

After having him despawn on me several times while using the right horse and then the game NOT auto-dismounting me I sat there and waited while he slapped my horse around. After my horse 'died' I was dismounted and able to attack him without him evade bugging and running like a punk.

PS: The horse has a lot of hp and is only being hit for around 500hp/swing and likes to dodge/parry. If you dont want to wait forever just dont put any of the 3 stacking shield up while fighting him on his mount so that your horse has less hp when he dismounts.

If it's really that difficult, just fight the man without the mount.

Yes, you need to be on it to have the squire call him, but I just hopped off my mount and my death knight kicked the Black Knight's face in the good old fashioned way. Might be a little harder for some squishier classes, but I can't see there being much of a problem. He hits for practically nothing.

Just did this quest on my druid.
After the Knight jumped off his mount and said that I should get off mine to, I just had to wait there untill he killed my mount since if I get off it my self he evades. Lame.

I didn't get dismounted when he challenged me to man-to-man combat. I dismounted myself the first time and he ran into the middle of the field and despawned, then I tried again and waited until he had started attacking me and then dismounted and then he despawned. 3rd try I waited until he had killed my horse, and then I could fight him. So if you don't get dismounted just let him kill your horse.

Looks like it's a bit buggier in 4.0.1.

I tried this quest about 4-5 times, and each time I made the "mistake" of defeating the black knight in mounted combat and forcing him to dismount. I then dismounted as he said I should, which of course makes him despawn.

I then tried again and again, and despite dismounting him, the game would never force me off my mount, and I didn't feel like waiting for him to whittle down 50,000 HPs on the horse at a whopping 350 dmg per swing with no shields up.

Last time I tried it, I let him defeat ME in mounted combat, which forced me to dismount. I was then able to defeat him on foot without him despawning.

Still seems to be really buggy.

In 4.0.1 on the right horse I still wouldn't get dismounted. In the end I let him beat on me until my mount died. This dismounted me without despawning him and I was able to complete the quest.

If you are not getting auto-dismounted and don't wanna wait hours (till your mount is dead) you can just:

Start the event (with your argent warhorse) and dismount before the fight start, this way you just kill the knight while being unmounted and without any mount problem.

Works for everyone as i could get confirmations from others.

Easy and quick massacre of that ridiculous annoying black knight :p

I stood there for about 2 minutes after he yelled for me to get off my horse, and I let him hit me the whole time - no automatic dismount. So, that went well...

Edit: I had to let him kill my mount before he dismounted, then I beat his mount to death with the lance, and once he dismounted I beat him to death with the lance as well. Epic!

If the quest is bugged and you don't auto-dismount after the Black Knight yells to "Fight like a man!", let your shields drop and let the Black Knight kill your mount. You will be auto-dismounted, and can then fight him. The fight disperses and he despawns only if you dismount manually by clicking the dismount button.

As of 4.0.1 patch, it seems that although The Black Knight dismounts at the start of the second phase, you don't (automatically dismount)! You have to wait till he kills your Argent Warhorse (vehicle) and then fight him normally.

Theres an Bugg Issue for this quest happening now for patch 4.0.1
i've put an a ticket but anyways for any one whos having trouble being able 2 down the black knight try this way, It workd for me and ive gotten him down.

1.) Speak to squire Calvin while on Argent Warhorse to activate the Black Knight
( Note:) Stable Argent Warhorse is located near FP

2.) Squire Calvin well Call Black Knight 2 battle. Fight him Normaly on Argent Warhors.
3.) He well tell you 2, " Get off your mount and fight like a man" Dont Dismount, He well run away like a scardy chicken butt and it well read Evade"

4.) Stay on your Mount... The game is suppose 2 take over and dismount you, But at this point, if your experiencing same issue as i am, and the game wont dismount you, what you do is this....

5.) Stay on your Argent Warhorse, Keep shields down, have him pew pew you while still on Argent Warhorse with shields down, as your hp well get low while in Argent Warhorse dont worry hes not going to kill you. Just Knock you off your Argent Warhorse. Once He Knocks you off quickly switch from using your Lance to your weps and pew pew him, Ten you'll get the credit...

If you happen to be experiencing the Black Knight dismounting, then he gives his speech, but you don't dismount right away; stay mounted, do not equip your weapons in preparation to fight cause that will most likely dismount you but bug the Black Knight. I had to wait for the Black Knight to chop down my mount to dismount me, then I could pull out my weapon and beat him down. It takes him a minute or 5 to deal enough damage to kill your mount, but it is well worth the wait to get this job done. I tried every other way that I read (or at least I think so) and this is what worked for me. Hope it helps someone :)

A Tauren DK I was watching go through this quest line yesterday got hit with that glitch rather hard, but we found a simple way around it. He asked me to take out the Black Knight for him. Splat, bang, boom, done.

So for those worried about the "no auto-dismount" bug, simple solution: Take a friend with you!

as i wrote earlyer you can avoid wasting time (i.e: waiting till your mount is dead) and just dismount right after you started event (and before you enter combat). check my post above. works perfecty and it's even faster than when you are mounted :p

While it's true that this quest is currently bugged, please, look at previous posts before posting something that has already been said. If you experience the same, there's a nice rate-up button at the very first post mentioning this issue and what to do about it.

I just gave my downrates to every later post and uprated the first one, as that is the only one that's actually useful.

FASTER WAY:
Sadly, the Black Knight will be your least challenging opponent in the Argent Tournament. However, it does have a bug that may cause you problems. Equip your lance, jump on the Stabled Argent Warhorse, and then talk to Squire Cavin. He'll call the knight out for you. At this point dismount quickly before you enter in combat mode.
Then just fight him as you would with any other non-elite mob.

i found this guy but don't call the black knight im doing something wrong or i have to wait in the morning "Challenge him in the light of the day " that's what the quest tell me about it so if someone know how to do it or explain me . thank : D

so how do we get the charger? i cant talk to the dude on my normal icecrown mount, and i cant find the argent charger

There is a "Stabled Argent Warhorse" in the stables behind Squire Cavin. :)

I'm really not adding any info, just putting some points together. I just did this quest after a long span of confusion.
Head to the ring near the 3 worms, it is the "Ring of Champion's".
Equip your Argent Tournament lance. Then get on one of the mounts 'next' to that ring. Not one of the mounts you used to challenge your own faction prior to getting this quest.
Look behind you; there you'll see squire Calvin. (child)
You click him and he should respond with an offer to summon the black knight.
Once you see the black knight on his gryphon, dismount. If you are a hunter, call your pet. (mine did not appear )

I've just done this 2x between 3:30 am pst- and 4am pst. So I'd assume any time of day is ok.
Once I dismounted, I began to attack the DK. He killed my mount and continued to attack me. It was not a difficult fight. Tho I noticed his health would bottom out and come back. I continued to to attack, he would loose health quickly and after apx 2 times, he was dead.

This was just my experience; but the tips in prior posts about dismounting, using one of the mounts next to the ring....Then asking calvin to summon him, seem to be the best way.
Second time I did this with my druid, worked just about the same way and it was not difficult.

I'm not getting credit for killing the Black Knight. He dismounts like he's supposed to, dismounts me, like he's supposed to, I shoved my dagger up his bum-bum.... and no credit for the kill. :/

I did this about 5 or 6 times and no credit any of the times :/

I had the problem about not getting credit too. I found the solution was to kill him slowly and do it with your lance still equipped. I think otherwise you kill him too quickly and it bugs out.

Remember he has to lose both arms and both legs before he taunts you one last time and you just leave him behind you. Oh wait that's the movie.

So, I had trouble finding the correct mount, until I read the comments below. You need to mount the Stabled Argent Warhorse at the far end of the stables. If you are not on this mount, Squire Calvin will not start the fight. The fight was no more difficult than any of the other matches. Once he is low on life, he dismounts you and wants to fight hand-to-hand. I took everyone's advice and kept the Lance equipped. I wanted to kill him slowly as to avoid the bug indicated by others, but at lvl 85, I still one-shotted him. But, the quick kill still gave me credit and I got the achieve.

EDIT : my fail, I had to finish quests with 1 faction first so I can get it.

I can't seem to get this quest? I have finished the one prior and this is not offered. Do you have to finish the 25 stars quest to be able to fight in the ring that the black knight appears in. So they just will not offer this quests till then?

nvm I found the answer in the completion notes of the previous quest.

I hate the jousting and put off this quest. When I did it I was amazed at how easy he was. He didn't put shields up like the others do. He appeared on a gryphon and jousted from there. I got him down pretty easily. Apparently his fight is meant to go to a phase where you fight him on foot but I beat him before that happened.
I still hate the other jousting ones. :p

When Crusader Rhydalla directs you to: "Use my argent charger for the battle," she means use the Stabled Argent Warhorse (Alliance and Horde) on the east end of the stable next to The Ring of Champions.

You can get on other mounts, but they wouldn't work. If you use them, Squire Calvin wouldn't summon the Black Knight.

Currently bugged if you don't kill him before he dismounts.

Workaround:
1. Mount up on the Stabled Argent Warhorse with your Lance equipped.
2. Speak with Squire Cavin and summon The Black Knight.
3. Immediately dismount after summoning The Black Knight.
4. Kill him.
5. Profit.

2023 Fix: Dismount right away while the black knight is running into the ring. Bring him down to low health, he will dismount, then you can kill him.

I got everything right. Equip lance and Stabled Argend Warhorse. Horse phase is normal. Black Knight dismounts and he fights with my horse, i will not dismount. I do nothing and in 10 minutes he kills my horse and runs away... enyoy

If you dismount after the Black Knight is dismounted it will evade. Funny how this bug was implemented in classic. The solution. Bring a friend or ask for help. Do not dismount and let someone else kill the Black Knight. You'll get the credit.

as of 1.feb 2023:
* use alliance horse only. if your horde and looking for mount, take alliance one. otherwise npc wount talk to you and give you the black knight to be summoned.
* just fight him on horse
* let him dps down your horse, it will take some time, but he will do it. before you engage him, dont put shields on yourself, it will make it faster.
* when he kills your horse, dps him down, its easy 12,5k hp is few hits.
* done.

if you equip your weapons, hes gone, if you dismount yourself, hes gone. need to allow him to dps down your horse, like you did with his. so he has some pride left before he died i assume.

Use my argent charger for the battle. It's housed in the stables.

Speak to Squire Cavin at the Ring of Champions. The squire will call the Black Knight to battle, but you will make him answer for his crimes.
