Forget subtlety. Map a key to the harpoon for your left hand; I used my mouse to move the target reticule, and blast away. Use the energy buff when depleted. You can try and lead some closeup mobs coming from left to right and sometimes you can hit 'em going away from you. But forget timing distant mobs, the harpoon detonation seems random and there's no way you can judge the distance and their turn rate to lead them with any success.

This one is really easy! just remember to turn off all of your add ons and its done in a matter of a few minutes. One thing to remember only aim at those dragons flying nearby or else you will lose a lot of time trying to aim at something you cant hit

Go to 32, 24 and choose one of the harpoons. You need to wait until the dragons fly very near - if you need more than ~5 shots and they don't die, they aren't near enough. Dont try to shoot the ones which are far away, you can't kill them.
Takes a little practise, but once you know what to do, it's quite easy.

Easiest technique I've found is to let your energy regen and then spam a ton of harpoons into a target (or a group). Much better than only firing the occasional harpoon while energy-starved.

as of a week after relase, the harpoon gun might be bugged... They twist alot to the right, making it VERY hard to aim properly

The amount of time this quests takes makes it not worth doing in my opinion. Slow moving harpoons that curve randomly to one side that can only be fired in a 90º cone. Most frustrating daily to date.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this yet. Most people are probably having trouble aiming because their camera is zoomed out. Zooming into first person should solve most problems with aiming. The harpoons travel fairly slowly, but you can easily compensate by leading.

first few days on live it was fine. then suddenly you couldn't move the gun in the proper cone to hit the drakes in front of you, it has always been buggy with credit when some drakes are killed. Even if you took them from 100% to 0%

Just spam the button while watching TV or youtube. That's what I do. Most painless way to get it done till they fix the turret traverse bug.

While the quest itself isn't broken, I could not turn the harpoon launchers at all to the left. I could only keep them straight or turn them to the right. Some of the launchers on the left hand of the platform could not even turn past the central point of the platform. Due the inability to target the full area with any particular launcher, I switched launchers often, and they all experienced the same issue to one degree or another.

Very frustrating.

The first time I did this it felt a bit random but by the second time I got it done quickly and easily. My method was more spamming than subtlety but I did aim for (and occasionally hit) the middle-distance drakes once I was familiar enough with their flight paths to lead my aim properly.

The only problem I had was that some of the drakes were tagged grey so I shot down far more than I got credit for.

I would have expected that to happen if there'd been other players also on the quest, but I did this early in the morning and I couldn't see anyone else around. Perhaps someone had been there not long before and there's a glitch with the way they reset. None of the tagged ones were evade-bugged – they were moving as normal and killable.

One thing that might lead people to think this quest is bugged (and feel free to downrate this comment once it's fixed) is this: the drakes take 3-4 hits to die, which means you can shoot one once and not kill it, then hit 20 more drakes to fill your quota. Problem is that the one you hit before is now tapped, meaning if someone else kills it they will not get credit. This drake you tapped will continue to fly around at 75% hp until it is killed. Hopefully this is fixed soon.

1. Pick a Harpoon gun, spam it all on 1 proto-drake until it's dead. Regen and spam again to kill another. Leave vehicle and move to the next one along. It's faster than waiting for it to regen back up to 100 :)
2. Avoid the Harpoons in the middle. The building makes the view slightly uncomfortable!

with the aiming bug it seems the best chance you have of completing the quest is the dangerous dismount guns on the far edges so use caution if you cant survive long falls.

This quest can bug out in such a way that the cannon doesn't fire anymore. Relogging fixes it.

The PTR patch notes says "The daily quest, "Shoot 'Em Up" now only requires 15 Jotunheim Proto-Drakes to be shot down, down from 20. As well, the harpoon now only costs 5 energy to shoot, down from 10. "

This daily is very hard if you're running any kind of latency, so using a suggestion from above (just spam the fire button while watching TV) is just about the only option, besides not doing it.

Easiest way to do it if your the only one there -
Spam all 10 harpoons as fast as possible, use your reserve instantly and spam those 10.
Dismount vehicle, move over and use the next one. Each new turret will always have full energy and reserve wont be on CD.
Repeat.

Quest appears to have been hotfixed sometime this week. The Harpoon can now be aimed 45° to the left, and 45° to the right (previously only 90° to the right).

Summary of suggestions/issues with this quest, from me and comments below:

WHAT TO DO:

"Go to 32, 24 and choose one of the harpoons."
"Spam all 10 harpoons as fast as possible, use your reserve instantly and spam those 10. Dismount vehicle, move over and use the next one. Each new turret will always have full energy and reserve wont be on CD."
"Zooming into first person should solve most problems with aiming." (except the problem listed below)
"Dont try to shoot the ones which are far away."
Inviting nearby friendly players to a group can speed up this quest a lot.

WHAT'S MESSED UP:

"They twist alot to the right, making VERY hard to aim properly" (...although I found you can shoot straight if you don't move at all once you enter the vehicle).
EDIT: This seems to have been hotfixed today, Jan 13th. Huzzah!
(Me personally:) The fire button simply doesn't work. I spoke to a GM who suggested that it's QuestHelper (oddly enough) and disabling that has fixed it for me.

You might often not get credit for killing drakes. " for the first few you shoot down, you'll probably be cleaning up someone else's mess. Once they're tagged they tend to stay tagged until they die."

This quest has brought me to new levels of rage then I thought possible.

For some reason I simply can NOT get past 11 down, even when I see one untapped, in range, and it obviously dies I can't get credit for it. I've probably killed at least 50 of these blasted things to no avail, and as such I'm boned out of what should be an easy and fun daily.

Here's hoping Blizz fixes this at some point. I can live with the screwy turning radius, but the bugged kills are just too much for me.

Confirmed, as of 3.08, this quest only requires 15 Jotunheim Proto-Drakes, and the energy cost of the harpoon has been reduced to 5.

As of Patch 3.0.8 i found that the harpoon gun restores its energy very very quickly, much more quicker than pre-patch, i could spam tons of harpoon shots out and still have energy left, totally didn't have to use the first skill to restore my energy.

The roof of the building will occasionally cause your view to be blocked when you aim high if you picked one of the middle cannons. Those on the sides avoid this problem entirely.

If you do this quest in a group, each kill will give credit for everyone in your group. Groups of 3 or more can knock this quest over very quickly.

So even if your soloing the quest, and you see someone else doing it - ask them to group up just for this quest so you both finish it faster...

I found it rather challenging until I learned a secret, at least for me.

1. Target only the Dragons that were flying right in front of the gun.
2. Target where they're going, not where they are. just in front of them should suffice.
3. Switching guns is not necessary since the 1 button is a regen. By the time you get low it's CD is finished so you can hit it.

Easy quest now. All the aiming problems are gone and the spear is much cheaper. Zoom all the way in so a shifting POV doesn't mess up your aim, and just aim and mash your fire button. Use the reload when it runs dry. When it runs dry again, just move to the next gun in the line and repeat. Takes about 2-3 minutes, max.

I can't even get this quest. Why is that? I must have done pre quests since I am only 4 short of the quest achivement, but Leaper doesn't have any q's to give me anyway.
Same goes for Baron Silver's 'Leave Our Mark'. Vile's Vile 'Like Fire!' can't even talk to him.

I know I need to finish Duke Lankral's chain, and that I must have done, since he have no quests to give me. And if I don't remember wrong it was this chain I did when I dinged 80.

After attempting this quest multiple times (at least 10 times over the past 3 months, not including the time wasted on it during beta testing last summer and fall) I am STILL unable to hit ANY of the drakes...and it doesn't matter HOW close they are (even if they fly right in front of my face). Zooming in to "first person" and disabling ALL my addons made no difference whatsoever.

This quest was even worse during beta testing and it still is NOT worth the time or effort.

As of today (2/28) I had to disable Carbonite Quest as well, not just Quest Helper in order for the fire button to work. Once that was disabled the quest was quick and easy.

It took me a long time to figure out this quest (I guess rapid-fire harpoon didn't click with me ._.), but eventually figured out that you can spam arrows, restore your energy, and then spam more arrows.

Don't be like me and try to shoot them one by one by one. (._.')

All I can say is thank god the Vrykul had the tactical foresight to appoint a squadron of Proto-Drake riders to defend their harpoon launchers, which are wisely pointed over the open sea.

I like using this macro for this quest:

/cast Rapid-Fire Harpoon

/cast Rapid-Fire Harpoon

If you put it on a different action bar than your "vehicle bar" it works even in the turret. It uses more energy, but it one-shots them and is more fun imo. More like a shotgun, less like a machine-gun.

This quest has been buffed/made easier in 3.1. The weapons shoot much faster (as fast as you press the button) and more accurately. The projectiles also travel further. Find the right turret to do it on, there's one right before the divide that can aim in both directions, it will make the quest much easier.

I agree with Jayl3w, badly bugged..logged in and out three times.. dropped the quest twice.. still cannot get the harpoons to register damage at any range (have completed this daily quite a few times before the latest patch without trouble), graphics display explosive on target hits but no damage figures and no kills.. thought it was a variant on the 'dismiss pet or expect problems' bugs that have dogged hunters on a number of Northrend quests involving 'mounts'.. but perhaps this one is more general.. reports also logged on Thottbot by other players detailing same problem..

Edit - Blizzard clearly sorted this bug out in a subsequent patch, the quest now works again for hunters.

I'm so glad that quests like this exist.

takes about 3 min to complete it and if u mix it with yet another ez daylie of the shadow vault (vile likes fire) u get free 26g in less than 5 min :P

If only other daylies where as easy as this I'd never have money problems in the game again.

This quest is really simple.... coords correct... u gotta dis-mount if ur mounted, click the harpoons... hold both mouse buttons down to aim, don't bother clicking the enemy, just start shooting (3) into the crowds as they fly by... I did this in about 2 minutes.... and one more word, the ones that are far away cannot be hit easily, so spam teh close ones (they don't attack you, or at least didn't hit me once)

What are the pre-requisites to this quest? I'm level 80.

I have finished the quest-line to open up the Shadow Vault, so "The Leaper" is now part of the Ebon Blade faction so is green to me, however he is not offering this quest, only "The Bone Witch" and "Eliminate the Competition", which I have completed.

I waited 24 hours to see if I had already completed too many daily quests yet its still unavailable :(

I do this quest every day and was frustrated at first. I hate any quest that has you using some kind of quest weapon or controlling a mob, but after a couple days I got the hang of it and now it only takes me a few minutes. Pretty easy quest for 13 gold once you get the hang of it.

I'm not sure why people are having so much trouble with this. My first try took about 2 minutes, tops. Just target the close ones and spam 3. When cooldown is up, press 1 to gain energy, but I didn't run out of energy once spamming 3 constantly.

Also, harpoons are located at and around 28,32

1) the effective gun arc is about 30 degrees l-r, very frustrating.
2) you have to key every shot and after 30 minutes max your
shooting hand and arm going to be hurting.

You can do 2-3 other daily's in the time it takes to do this
pos. I suggest you skip it.

At first this was going preetty slow... you can't target one and follow it around... but then I realized you can fire 8-10 shot salvos and things got going. Especially whe they come overhaed in groups, you just raise your sights and spam as many shots as you can - twice I took out groups of 6 this way. Easy quest.

On the Skywall server:
You can do this daily within 3 to 5 minutes - use the number 3 key on your keyboard for rapid fire. The controls for the gun is posted as seen on the gun control menu on the bottom of the screeen - as the number 3 key is the fire button.

The trick here is to wait till the enemy is flying towards you and note that the targeting reticule gets larger as they approach. Once they are in an approach spam heck outta the 3 button and launch 8 or 10 harpoons into em. That is how itz done me hearties. If that don't help u then group up with a bud and hope that the two of u can throw enough dust in the air to make a difference.

The guns are just east of the arena area facing north off the cliff. Just us the number 3 button and lead the dragons, less than 3 minutes to complete

Jotunheim has aerial defenses, both in terms of proto-drake riders and harpoon guns. They've concentrated these on their northern and western facings where they are most vulnerable.

Take control of a harpoon gun on the platforms that overhang the cliffs on either side of Valhalas to the southwest. Take out the proto-drakes and their riders. Shoot 'em up!
