I think I can safely say this is the single most epic thing that's ever been in WoW, bar none.

Yes, the Drakkensryd is easily the most visually spectacular Kill X of Y quest in the game. When you pick it up from Gretta the Arbiter, she will hand you a Hyldnir Harpoon and pack you off on a proto-drake. The drake will fly west to the Temple of Storms, which rests on a very tall mountain peak. There you will enter formation with other riders, doing laps around the temple itself. At this point, dismounting is inadvisable, as there's no parachute.

To begin the quest itself, target a Hyldsmeet Proto-Drake (not a Hyldsmeet Drakerider), and use your harpoon. This will launch you to the back of the drake, where you and its rider will fight. So, yeah, there you are, on the back of a dragon, a mile above the ground, battling to the death. When you defeat your opponent, she falls to her doom, arms and legs flailing. Continue jumping from dragon to dragon until you've killed all ten, and when you're done, use your harpoon on a Column Ornament. That will get you into the temple itself, so you can turn in to Thorim.

What isn't clear to me, though, is how ranged classes, especially hunters, would manage it. You can't get more close quarters than this.(##RESPBREAK##)2056##DELIM##adashiel##DELIM##

It is very hard for hunters. I started the quest not really realising what it entailed as BM and ended up dying badly. I had to make some crappy hybrid melee build to handle this (and I still had to bandage after every other fight). What is interesting is that on occasion, melee attacks knock your opponents off the dragons before you have actually killed them; you get a message "Your exotic fighting unstyle unbalances the Drakerider" or something and she makes a comment as she plummets.

Ive had it bug out on me twice now, Instead of going to the next one my harpoon shoots em, then I just sit there on the one I was riding... untill it despawns and drops me... luckly im on a mage so I can ice block / slow fall, but its pretty bugged right now

Very buggy. Using the Harpoon is difficult. Took me 30 minutes to complete this quest. If anyone figures out a trick to moving from drake to drake, please let us know!

This quest was extremely buggy for me. After abandoning & accepting the quest 4 times, I finally got frustrated.

If you mount up on your epic flying mount, you can dismount in the air & harpoon the other rider as you fall. To ensure that I never fell to my death, I would aggro the rider by flying on top of it . Then I dismounted, harpooned & defeated the rider. I would advise having iceblock, slowfall, levitate or a slowfall cloak handy just in case.

Edit: Also, make sure you're targetting the drake, not the rider. I was trying to harpoon the rider at first before i figured it out.

Best advice I can give is that you fly up there like normal, but as soon as you get up there, use the harpoon on the "Column Ornament", turn around and wait for a Drakerider to fly past. Use the harpoon and if it doesn't work just wait for the next. I found this to be less frustrating.

I'm having an awful time with this quest. The item seems to be bugged out of its mind. I target the drakes and use the item, it triggers the global cooldown, but nothing happens. I abandoned it, and I'm going back to retry it now.

Very awesome quest, being a fire mage I didn't have to jump from dragon to dragon and I just used living bomb on the targets and watched them asplode 5 miles in the air... and then fall down in a burning streak across the sky.

Bar Mods seem to be bugging out ALOT of these vehicle control type quest, logging out and disable the mod clears up issues. and after logging out and controling the vehicle using the normal blizzard UI then re enabling the bar mod seems to make it work

Word to the Wise: Do not attempt to mount the protodrake while already mounted on the Headless Horseman's Mount. You'll be mounted on the horse - on the drake - and will be dismounted entirely when attacking/eating/drinking/anything.

Ouch :(.

(In a related note - you are able to ride various other Northrend quest-mounts while already on the horseman mount, and will produce some hilarious results... just stay away from this one!)

Caution!

You can hook onto other player's drakes while on this quest. You can't fight them like this, but the drake you just hooked onto will disappear as soon as they hook onto another drake.

it was bugged for me too. (druid maybe because the shapeshift thing into bear)

what i did to fix was use space (jump) several times and try again. if that didnt work i hooked on my own dragon and used space again and again. then it worked for me.

hooking to an ally which is doing this quest will bug him and hell fall down xD

If it bugs out, what worked for me was using the harpoon on my own drake which worked every time when it bugged out on other drakes. Then try again on another one. Worked 90% of the time.

Easily the most annoying quest for hunters in Wrath. But still soloable.

Here's how to prepare for it as a hunter:

If you're on a PvP server, make sure there aren't Horde around or they're friendly. This one takes a while and it's a lot easier once you get going.
You can't use pets, they just bug out and can't attack if they spawn at all.
Traps don't seem to do anything at all.
Put on as much PvP/stam gear as possible. If you're levelling cooking/fishing you should have some stam food like Baked Manta Ray lying around.
Try to max out the weapon skill you're using so you can actually hit the Hyldsmeet Drakeriders
Be ready to pop cooldowns including Deterrence, health/rejuv potions and healthstones if you get low on HP.
Make a stack of Heavy Frostweave Bandages, you can bandage while flying. If you run out you can make them while in the air.
Make sure you can switch between Aspect of the Dragonhawk and Aspect of the Viper because spamming Raptor Strike and Wing Clip will oom you pretty quickly.
If your health drops too low, be ready to jump off by using the harpoon to the main platform. The ghost-fly back is quite something with your corpse being so vertically high up, but something you should be able to avoid.
The Hyldnir Harpoon sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, so be ready to repeat the following several times.
If you do die or need to reset, the first kill is the hardest. Every kill after you can get a few shots off on the next rider so you don't have to melee as much, and then try to jump between dragons.

Melee hunter like those first 10 terrible levels ftl ><

Indeed this quest is bugged! It is possible to get it complete, but it could take some tries.
If the harpoon doesnt work once, it might work a few tries later.

This is a tough one for hunters if you go melee right off the bat! Instead.. like someone mentioned.. fire a couple of rounds on a pilot ahead of you, then jump to the dragon. Works like a charm.

And dont forget to heal after each battle... if neccessary ofcourse!

If you have 1860 HP or less, do not harpoon onto a Column Ornament because the falling damage will kill you. (Do not learn this the hard way like I did!)

For the hunters - I dropped the quest and re-tried it four times in total just to make sure this works - the harpooning will not bug if you dismiss your pet (or at least will bug way less, did not bug for me at all later tries, the first one was a well of frustration, tho). Same may be applicable to locks, but I cannot confirm this.

jesus christ i have not had one vehicle quest NOT bug out on me, i got there and he harpoon did absolutely nothing when i targeted drakes or ornaments, i had to just dot up riders as i flew past (im a warlock) and hope it was enough to kill them

BM Hunter here...loved the effects and creativity for this quest...hated the bugginess. This is not a test of skill but of patience. It may take a while to complete.

Advice: Be prepared to melee. Shoot the riders ahead before harpooning over. Watch the targeting, to shoot you need to target the rider and not the drake. For harpooning target the drake and not the rider. Be prepared to bandage / heal. Be prepared to take some time to get through this quest. Try to finish the quest on the higher flying drakes, if you end up too low you will not be able to harpoon the top without first harpooning a higher drake.

Also...don't skip this quest as it unlocks many more quest chains in Storm Peaks, leads to the Sons of Hodir faction (shoulder enchants), along with a number of dailies.

Easy for hunter, you can shoot from range and the kill count. But using harpoon give more fun.

You can also use harpoon on empty dragon to change your position, very fun.

Note: you can dismiss your pet when riding, it's solve the harpoon bug.

Probably one of the most awesome new quests introduced in WotLK, it's also horribly bugged. You can click on another dragon, but there's no guarantee that it will work or not. This becomes rather annoying.

Also, my guild mate happened to be doing the quest at the exact same time as me, and he was right in front of me in the flying circle, and pulled himself onto my dragon. He then pulled himself off, my dragon despawned, and I fell to my death.

This could really make the quest undoable (depending on your server's population) and it could put a stop to you progressing your quest line to get Neutral with "The Sons of Hodir".

Bugs aside, I would like to see another quest like this, or this quest as a daily (If it isn't already). It was awesome.

As a warlock, i found that fear seems to stun them long enough for me to get all my d.o.t.'s cast . Then just wand until dead. Completed this quest easily . If you can manage to get to place with no other dragons flying around you, you can eat or drink. Otherwise use mana pot's.

Definitely one of my favorite quests in all of WoW...once it worked.

I could do NOTHING when I started circling the Altar. Couldn't jump dragons, couldn't jump up to the Altar to end the quest...nothing worked. I had to DoT up a rider as I flew by and kill her from my dragon, then my demon desummoned and I was able to use the harpoon to jump from dragon to dragon and kill the riders.

Sp, warlocks, dismiss your demon before taking the quest or you'll most likely have the same problem.

If you have anything in the way of a summoned demon, hunter pet, or passive companion out, the quest will appear bugged. I had the same issue. Upon dismissing my demon, the quest worked perfectly. Might clear up the issue for some people.

Funny fact you guys made it look this hard, you can stay at 1 dragon shoot at other mobs at the dragons without beeing on their dragon. This made it so epic, mounted ranged combat, always wanted it.

This is the most stupid, idiotic quest ever. I have no chance as a hunter. I´ve been doing this with my warrior friend. I keep flying, he kills and we both hope I was close enough. He killed about 40 before I got 10. This is really unbelievable. What drugs were they on when they thought of this?

My least favorite quest so far in WOTLK, as a rogue.

First time I did this I was harpooning from drake to drake all happy and what not, then blam I harpoon to one, there is no mob on it, and I fall to my death after 3 seconds of sitting there doing nothing.
At this point I was uber #$%^ed, but no biggie I guess, I'll just try it again.
I started it again...harpooned from drake to drake, %^&*ed off this time, then I decided to use killing spree....(okay not a brilliant choice but eh, blizz should've seen this happening) and as expected I bounced right off the drake and fell to my death again...
I did it again and succeeded, though it was terrible in the process.
The morale is, don't use killing spree (or have bad luck)

Did this as an 80 hunter with about 3600 AP and 15k HP (MM) I shot a few of them down from range. When I did melee one down I switched to asp of the beast for the melee AP boost and used raptor strike and mongoose bite and didnt die once. Not nearly as hard as some people make it sound.

Hunters, very easy. Have the NPC front of you. Start by Serpent sting it, Arcane shot and not needed, but if u have the time, steady shot, then use harpon and start attacking the NPC on the drake when she is like less than 4k+ HP.

Right, so after reading oh so many comments I expected this to be annoying as hell since Im a BM hunter, but now, after I just completed it I dont understand what was so hard ? Why make special tactics ? Why bring pots ? and why the HELL do you want to use Wingclip ?.

I used around 2-3 bandages in total and I was only using Raptorstrike+Mongoose bite and Deterrance when I could.

I was lvl 79 and with normal gear. Extremely easy.

This quest was so much fun.

As a mage I accidentally unseated myself, so I hit Slow Fall and glided down to a lower level. I didn't want to fly all the way back to the village to catch another drake, so I flew up to the top of the temple and stood on the edge, and sure enough I could target a drake rider from the platform. Of course, she was moving pretty fast so I spent a few seconds flying behind her, attached by the harpoon, before catching up and dismounting her with a PoM-Pyro.

I wasted an hour on this stupid quest. The chain shoots out, attaches to another Drake, and nothing! I finally had to just eject, as nothing I tried did anything at all. I tried again, thinking BUG, and after another 15 min of flying around in circles another player targeted my drake, and we both fell to our deaths, that was fun.

I don´t know why hunters complain about this quest. First, you can just get a couple of health potions and use your melee abilities, it should be enough.
Second (I am not sure, only tried it when I had 1 rider left to kill), you don't even have to land on the drake. Just shoot the riders of other drakes with your shots, they will die and fall off, and you will get credit. If you don't, shoot them until they are 10% health that jump onto their drake.

VERY IMPORTANT BUG INFO!

as an unholy Death Knight I had a permanent ghoul pet out when I accepted quest. after arriving at the temple, the Harpoon would glitch out anytime I launched it at another drake...it would fire, and go into cooldown, but nothing else would happen. my pet was still flying around with the vehicle, so i used ctrl+v to bring up nameplates, targeted my pet and dismissed, and this fixed the bug.

don't know if this is an issue with other classes, but it worked for me.

Somehow I fell off, I used slow fall to survive. I flew back up and managed to harpoon another drake, you don't have to fly back if you survive.

Edit: If you harpoon onto a drake that has a player on it and no NPC then they leave, you fall off.

Another small bug I found with this quest. While riding, you can eat/drink. If you use your harpoon while eating, you'll land on the next drake and continuing eating. Even more peculiar than that, however, is that you can fight your opponent while you continue to restore health and mana from food.

Since no one has mentioned it, that i can see. If you target another PC you will be dragged to their mount and then dismounted to fall. If you are dismounted and lived, just mount on your own flyer, fly to the top and harpoon a passing drake to continue the quest.

Extremely annoying for hunters, on the verge of sadism. Fortunately I am survival and am specced for for savage strikes.

One neat little trick if you are specced for it is to pop a wyvern or serpent sting on them before you leap, but it isn't as simple as Ezekiel suggests because you have to wait for them to get into shooting range first (which can be a bit of a wait) and then pick the correct drake before they fly out of harpoon range.

Other than that it is really just a pain or an unnecessary challenge depending on your mood at the time.

I can understand people getting confused, it took me a while to work it out. It's not bugged for me and some people may be getting it wrong.

The quest starts, with the dragon flying you to the temple of storms. There it circles round, and will not kick you off. Target a fellow DRAGON. Not a rider, a DRAGON. Use the harpoon on the DRAGON and you will shoot over to it. Then, target the rider and kill him. You will stay on that dragon. Now, target another DRAGON. Use harpoon. Kill rider, and repeat. Once you have done all 10, click on a pillar ornament thing (the lamp on the pillar) and use the harpoon. If you find you are out of range, harpoon up to a higher dragon. Make sure you have a decent amount of health as when you drop onto the temple of storms you will recieve fall damage. Walk to the center of the temple and speak to the guy.

From an unprepared hunter to other hunters:

1.) Have health pots. At least 10.
2.) DISMISS your pet! Seriously, do it before you start the quest.
3.) If you missed #2 and started the quest, press V to get the nameplates up, click on your pet and dismiss it.
4.) Harpoon a mob in front of you and it will launch you over to it.
5.) Raptor, Mongoose, Wingclip, Hunters Mark, Trinket.
6.) Repeat #5 in any order until you get to about 50% health, then eat a health pot.
7.) Repeat #5 till the mob is dead.
8.) Eat and drink, wait for short cooldowns and start back at #4.
9.) When all 10 mobs are dead, harpoon onto one of the small lights on the tower and talk to the quest giver.

This took me so long that my 5 min Rapid Fire cooldown was up every other fight.....

Still a good quest, even though Blizzard is either playing a joke on Hunters or forgot that we exist when this quest was made. :D

Also, we can knock cross-faction toons off of their mounts and have them fall to their death if they start the quest around the same time. :)

Those ornaments were always too far from me because I happened to have been on a low flying drake. If you ever run into such a situation, just get onto a high flying one and immediately use the harpoon again to get onto the temple platform.

I believe that you cannot harpoon to a drake that is flying below you. My harpoon worked 100% of the time on drakes above me, but none of them worked below me. I'm a Druid, I was in boomkin form the whole time, quest rocked, and no, Typhoon didn't throw them off for an easy kill :(

Yeah, maybe there's some trick to it or maybe it's just bugged, I don't know, but this quest was unbelievably annoying. I simply could not get my harpoon to work on anything, near or far, above or below, to my left or right. I eventually got the quest done by putting the harpoon on my action bar and spamming the living crap out of everything in sight hoping one would hit. Harpoon seems to only work on 10% of the mobs.

If you want play evil, harpoon onto a drake mounted by another player doing the same quest. When you harpoon onto the next drake the player you left behind will bug out and fall to his death. Dont know if it works on opposing faction players (PvP server).

It's not actually that bad as a bm hunter. Just pop AOTD then spam melee abilities. What alot of people don't realise is you can eat on their backs in between fights to get your health back.

I'm pure BM with a few excess points in MM, sure it took longer than it would for other classes but theres no reason any hunter should die on this quest.

How many things could go wrong with one quest ? You shouldn't have to look at Thott or WH every quest. I make multiple attempts with harpoon with graphic showing me harpooning other drake but I'm not leaping. So I dismount after using harpoon, Death #1. After using my own flying mount, I finally make a few successful leaps and kills. During one leap however I leap onto a drake with another player on it, he leaps away and my mount disappears, Death #2. When I get back to my body I am dead half way down a sheer cliff giving me no choice other than to take another 10% damage and rez midair falling to Death #3. When I get back to where my corpse is supposed to be, there is no body to be found, can't rez, so have to go back to Spirit healer and take another 25%. at this point all my gear is yellow from questing with a couple of red items. I'm one kill from completing I get back on my flying mount leap onto a drake and find out my weapon is broke, Death #4. /camp

Don't make the same mistake I did and target the mob and attempt to use the Harpoon, doing this will result in a message that says Invalid Target. You need to target the DRAKES in order to jump between drakes.

As others have said this is soloable for hunters. It may just take a little longer.

Make sure you have Wingclip, Raptor Strike, and Deterrance in your bar. If you can try to reduce the riders health by shooting at them and then jump on the mount. If not, don't worry it'll just make the fight a little longer, jump and use Wing Clip, Raptor Strike, and Deterrance and you'll knock them off.

It feels so could when they say "You Fight Like A Beast" or "Where Did You Learn That" as you knock them off their mounts.

BM HUNTERS!
Theres not big special prep need. You can target and fire Serpent Sting while mounted. Fire a Serpent Sting at the rider, then quickly target drake and harpoon to it. Now spam Mongoose and Raptor Strike. I was easily able to melee the rest f the HP left from Serpent Sting. The use a Bandage in between if need. Most of my fights I knocked the rider off before the fight was done.

I just did this on my BM hunter. She has two Traditional Flensing Knife's equiped and it was quite easy.

NOTE FOR HUNTERS:

1) Use Hunter's mark to mark a rider
2) use all instant shots before they fly out of range if your fast enough you should be able to kill them
3) if you weren't fast enough use the harpoon to go over to them and finish them off use Raptor strike or Mongoose bite

This is what i did as an MM specced hunter
I basically used :-
Chimaera shot
Aimed shot
Arcane shot
(and if they hadn't died)
Kill shot

For BM Specced Hunters
I would Suggest Using:-
Steady shot
Aimed shot
Serpent sting
and if it appears that they are moving to far away use the harpoon and start using melee

and the same would apply for Survival specced Hunters
Just remember if you have Improved Tracking to set the tracking to humanoids to increase damage

For any Hunters with the Scatter shot ability use this often as it basically stuns the enemy for a few seconds allowing you to get an extra attack in without being damaged back (helpful for close Hp battles)

A few of their comments i saw when my exotic fighting style made them plummet 2 miles down:

Hunters, spam wing clip as it gives a bigger chance for this fighting style thing to proc. Also, if you're Marksman and have decent gear, you can just pick them apart before you even have to jump onto their proto-drake, 2 of my kills were done like this.

Awesome Awesome quest. As a lock - ditch the pet, it will keep the harpoon from working. - If you fall and die, you can fly back up and get back into the fray by targeting a protodrake and firing the harpoon.

Being affliction spec, I decided to just fly around dotting all of those stupid enough to come within range (which is quite far). Killed 10 really fast.

I seriously have no idea what's wrong with you other BM hunters. I have a melee action bar that I use for melee if I ever get in such situations, and I was fine the whole time. Only had to eat twice... I have a blue polearm, too. 15k HP, 2511 AP in melee... make sure you have aspect of the dragonhawk on, too. ( I used nothing but mongoose bite and raptor strike, also. )

I'm a BM hunter with 15,7k hp and 9k mana and I had no problems with this quest.
I put on Aspect of the Dragonhawk, dismissed pet and jumped from a drake to another killing the riders quickly. I used raptor strike, mongoose strike and wing clip. I never used bandage, potions or food buff.
So don't worry hunters: it's an easy quest.

I did this as a BM hunter, it actuallly isnt as bad as people make it out to be... keep in mind that Mongoose bite is always available now (not just after you dodge), spam this as well as raptor strike. you are allowed to bandage and use potions in flight (i even made some bandages during the quest while mounted, haha). you dont have to die in order to complete this quest, they fall off the drakes usually before they reach half health

also for you taurens out there, warstomp is allowed as well.

I am a BM hunter and after spending 10 minutes trying to figure out why the harpoon didn't work i dismissed my pet. Same should go for warlocks and DK pets i would assume.
Anyways as a hunter just jump onto the mount and use raptor strike and mongoose bite. I suggest aspect of the dragonhawk for the dodge but aspect of the beast works too. Half the time the target falls off early, if they don't your still not likely to die just off one so just heal up if you have to. I only healed twice during the whole thing and I was never knocked off.

Wing clip only reduces movement speed and so you actually hurt your self by using it. Way to know your class. It also no longer does damage so there is zero point in using it on the quest.

assumed upon completing the quest, and dismounting, that I'd be slow falled to safety.
To my dismay, this did not occur, and resulted in a squishy red mess of what was a tauren, and to make matters worse, when I ressurected, I simply slid down the mountain into another red mess, this quest cost me more in repairs than I gained from it, still fun quest however.

And this is why everyone should simple read the quest log. Can't say you weren't warned.

Pretty epic scene to act out, with the swinging from one drake to the next waaaaaay above the ground.

I found that the harpoon didnt ALWAYS land me on the back of the drake I was targeting. In a few instances, I came up short and fell to my death. This seemed to occur when the targeted drake was at the edge of the range for the harpoon. So, I'd recommend only jumping to nearby drakes to be safe. Armor repairs are EXPENSIVE for such a fall.......

a few times (as a hunter anyway) When I mounted a new drake and attacked the NPC on it, I got a message that said "Your Exotic Fighting Technique throws the Drakerider off Balance." This promptly threw the poor rider off in one hit, saving me the pressure of hunter-melee combat a few times. I can't vouch for this working on other classes, but it certainly saved me some time and made things easier.

This quest seems buggy. The first time I tried I just kept flying around and when I targeted another flyer and clicked my harpoon it wouldn't attach. I kept flying around till I dismounted.

When I tried again it worked but then I couldn't dismount. I kept clicking on the pillars to dismount but I just flew around forever until some Tauren jumped on my mount and I fell off. Was fun up till that point :D

Maybe it's the 20 or so addons I'm running.

Poorly designed quest. Any ranged class will have trouble at the melee combat, druids automatically get shifted out of their forms with it, so feral druids might have a longer time if they didn't bring water, and most of the time, for me anyways, you can't harpoon other dragons. It just doesn't let you. Took me an hour to get it done.

If you were like me and you used Killing Spree by accident lol you fell to your death and you kicked yourself in the ass! lol Not a problem! Go back to your corpse get on your flying mount and get really close to a drake enough to where you can dismount and use the harpoon while your falling but you have to do this quick otherwise you'll fall to your death again! lol! Dismissed pet, fine it worked better making the jumps, BUT at two times, I fell off and died when trying to crapple.

First time another dragon, and the other time when trying to grapple an ornament.

I just did this quest, and some how in mid air, I dismounted. But lucky for me being a druid and all, I went into Flight Form, found a dragon rider, went out of Flight Form and then used the Harpoon to get back on a dragon.. And on with the quest!

Upon accepting this quest your character will immediately be mounted on the dragon. Make sure if you are a pet-class (warlocks, hunters, unholy DKs) to dismiss your pet before accepting the quest!

I became a BM hunter to be sitting on to pof a dragon using melee skills not able to let my pet help...hmz...great quest yes

Some tips, if not mentioned before:
I used serpent or scorpid sting while I was in range and fired as many shots as I could.
Then I used harpoon, deterrence if it was ready and raptorred and mongoosed the living hell out of the enemy
Aspect of the beast and dragonhawk are handy to use with melee or ranged
For hunters, Hawk Eye might be usefull as it gives you some extra range before having to go solo melee

It seems there are more vehicles in WOTLK then in the new Need for Speed :S

If you harpoon a drake that another friendly player is using, you will sling over to their drake just the same as you would to an NPC's drake, but will not be able to enter combat with them.

However, you then harpoon to another drake, for some reason that player will fall to their death. On the same token.... if you harpoon to them, then they are the first to harpoon off to another drake, you will also fall to your doom.

just did this on feral druid, you can change to cat form while on the back of the proto-drake to kill the mobs fast, really easy once i worked out had to use the hyldnir harpoon form the quest give.

If you are a class that has any sort of pet, you MUST dismiss your pet or else the fighting on the back of the drakes will not work!

If you launch your harpoon at another drake and you do not jump off yours and on to the back of theirs, make sure you do not have a pet summoned. So Hunters, Warlocks, and Death Knights dismiss your pets before starting this quest!

Interesting note for warlocks. Fear does work, but opponent has nowhere to run to. Therefor the opponent will just sit there passively while you go to work. A little helpful since you can't use your pet on this quest.

After the quest completed, what was I suppose to do? I killed all ten and I'm just continually flying in circles! Must be a bug. I had to jump off the bird and then I did the Mage slow fall, ended up on the edge of the cliff then I mounted up to head back.

Absolutely epic.

I will confirm with others that your pet MUST be dismissed in order for this quest to work properly. With your pet out the harpoon will not work at all and you will wonder what the objective is.

Secondly, be careful if another player (of the opposite faction on a PvP server, in my circumstance) jumps to your drake and proceed to another. After they move on, you will be kicked off after just a few seconds, causing you to fall to your death! Make sure you are the first one off if you are in that situation!

Sometimes, you'll get the mob to about 80% and then get an emote that says "<Name>'s exotic fighting technique throws the Drakerider off balance" and then the mob falls off. This only happened half the time while I was doing it and it didn't seem to be triggered by anything but it seems like they at least try to make it a bit easier on hunters.

Been awhile back i think the sentence might be wrong but the "exotic fighting style" is definitely there. Then she will scream something like "Where did you learn that!"

Just a quick add if you die doing this quest (like I did when it glitched and my mount disappeared) you do not need to abandon it and run back to the quest giver! Just fly to your body and resurrect yourself then eat/drink until you are ready to fight then fly to a point high enough that you can see the dragons and riders and find somewhere to land now use your harpoon to click on a dragon as it flies past and you are back in the game.

This is completely and PERFECTLY doable on a Hunter. You have to sit and wait until they get in range of your bow and use your Serpent Sting, Explosive Shot, Steady Shot. You don't ever really need to move and melee kill any of the riders on their own drakes. Just be patient and wait for them to come to you. Don't wait too long though, because once they get a certain distance away, their health will reset.

Hi! (This is to Help Druid's with their epic flight form)....

I just did this awesomely fun quest on my Druid...I have to say I felt like a bit of a "Tomb Raider" using the grapel to jump dragons lol.

So I read the posts on my tomtom/lightheaded quest add on. Maybe it was because I was fighting trying to complete my quest while mount skipping, but I couldn't actually see a clear way to dismount without falling to your death! I read alot of people saying "Do not dismount your dragon" it's a long fall to your death, "No Shadow Stepping" for rogues, etc etc.

So I did it my way, as im a Druid. While I did not dismount like the quest proberly intended me to. I have to say I dismounted with a little more style and class. Feeling awesomely cheerful- I decided It was worth a shot to dismount and mount again in Mid- Air!

It works a treat just let your wings do the flying for you :D

Best quest / most fun quest in this game period.

Rogues: They must have fixed the killing spree fall as of 3.08 since it worked fine for me. Secondly for a neat trick use your fan of knives ability. You will see one or two that didnt hit at first fly towards your target like a homing missle; use it as a finishing blow and it will follow the enemy rider to their doom til it catches up :)

Blizzard really struggles to make unique quests that aren't bugged.

If you're doing this quest, a toon from your own alliance is able to jump onto the same dragon you're on (or vice versa).

This is cool for about five seconds (hey, I'm sharing a mount with somebody!), until they harpoon another dragon and you fall off and die.

Essentially if someone jumps over to a dragon another player is on, the first player to harpoon off lives, the other one falls off and dies on a very high mountain that is a bit of a pain to return to for your corpse -- not to mention then flying back to the questgiver to get a new dragon.

Thank god I had my cold weather flying. If you didn't you'd rez, but be stuck on the side of a very steep mountain with nowhere to go but jump further and die again or hearth.

After 45 minutes of going in circles failing to harpoon the few I could tab target, I ejected and just aborted quest. "out of range" and "invalid Target" is all I get when I try to use the harpoon. I watched the video, and I have not been able to successfully just harpoon myself from one to another after killing each one. I read all the forum entry's and followed all the recommendations as I am a death knight, but maybe my latency is too bad to successfully jump from one to another.
I found this quest rather annoying and boring personally.

This really isn't that hard for a hunter.....

0) If you dismount, you die. Even with a cape that provides slow fall you're likely to bounce off the side of something, lose the slow fall, then splatter down the rest of the mountain.

1) I cannot speak for how this would become more difficult on a pvp server. I suppose someone could harpoon and then ride *your* drake while trying to kill you, but I'd find that unlikely. Since you can't fight on the back of a *player* mount, I'd find those attacks unlikely too.

2) Your pet, bow, and traps are all useless here. Cope.

3) The npc women/drakes will NOT usually attack you. Fly around the temple for hours if you like...they *might* very rarely get close enough to agro, but soon you'll be separated by the flight pathing and they have no ranged attacks (they do not harpoon you).

4) Put the harpoon on a hotkey. Use it on the DRAKES, not the women. It's only purpose is to pull you onto the back of a drake, and pull you off the drake and into a temple. You fight hand-to-hand.

5) Put on ASPECT OF THE BEAST - you're going to have to melee here. Period. You may as well buff your melee as much as possible. I suggest taking along melee weapons in which you are maxed for skill. There should be at least *one* by level 75....

6) You can still cast Hunter's Mark - so do - especially if you have the talent that shunts a portion of its effect to melee attacks.

7) Burn your cooldowns! Raptor, Mongoose, and Wing Clip like crazy. You'll have all the time in the world when the first kill dies to sit back on your drake and drink your mana back to full.

8) As you pick drakes to harpoon - try to pick ones above you...I kept targeting ones below me and by the time I got to kill #10 I was too low to reach the temple column with my harpoon. I needed an additional kill of a drake rider *above* me to be back into alignment.

You do NOT have to attack the Proto Drakes that are AGGRO colored (red). You have to attack the FRIENDLY colored Drakes (green).

Once I dismissed my pet this was easy. I am a Survival hunter, but don't have anything in melee talents.

Traps are useless (where my talents are) and you MUST dismiss your pet to use the harpoon.

I was able to kill my first few jumping over and using Raptor Strike & Mongoose Strike. Then I realized I could pick them off with my bow. If you don't engage for a while it flings you off (thank god for Snowfall Lager), but you can fly back to the top and jump on another drake. I killed 6 of my ten with my bow! The hardest part of that was finding one in range long enough to kill them - I had to switch off a few times to different drakes (most of which I had already killed the rider!).

I agree with this details but one thing that not mentioned is...you will be starting at a lower elevation than the column ornament. So one way to make sure you are in closer range to the ornament is to make sure you harpoon and jump to a drake at a higher level or after you have done your ten kills..continue to kill higher level (in height) drakes and get in range to the column.

As a holy priest this is super easy for me. PW:Sheild, 1 Holy Fire and 2 Smite mixed with a SW:Pain and your opponent is down.

Pretty much, this quest is AWFUL for marks/b.m. hunters who kill using ranged equipt. I would suggest raptor strike and attack, along with explosive trap, it'll help. Make sure you have full health each time you attack.

I was very confused at first, I had aspect of the monkey up, considering I was meleeing, but I found I couldn't hop proto-dragons when I had it up. So I'd take monkey down and then hop, then put it back up. When I put it back up, the mob instantly died as soon as I hit it.

If you're doing this quest, a toon from your own alliance is able to jump onto the same dragon you're on (or vice versa).

This is cool for about five seconds (hey, I'm sharing a mount with somebody!), until they harpoon another dragon and you fall off and die.

Essentially if someone jumps over to a dragon another player is on, the first player to harpoon off lives, the other one falls off and dies on a very high mountain that is a bit of a pain to return to for your corpse -- not to mention then flying back to the questgiver to get a new dragon.

Thank god I had my cold weather flying. If you didn't you'd rez, but be stuck on the side of a very steep mountain with nowhere to go but jump further and die again or hearth.

This might be what happened to me. Thought I could go savely afk but when I came back, my toon whas quite dead. When I checked the combatlog ther were no attacks from anyone, just falldamage.
But: You don't have to get a new drake from the questgiver. Just fly up (I think without cw flying you can't even get to this quest) to the top, harpoon the next drake and finish one of the coolest quests in this game.

Just did this and accidentally 'pooned an alliance on a drake. It would not let me attack her. She proceeded to harpoon to a column and the drake stopped flying and i fell to my death. So make sure the drake you are harpooning to isnt occupied by another player.

I dont know if this quest has been changed since last patch, but it was rather easy as hunter BM. The first anoying part was that if you have your pet by your side, you need to dismiss it in order to be able to harpoon the drakes.

Once in close combat, some NPCs died rather quickly. I dont really know what you need, but I got several times a message like "Your exotic combat skills unballance the Drakerider" (or something like that) and the Drakerider just falls. Sometimes it happened within the second or third hit and sometimes I had to kill em all, but it was quite easy.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think you can range attack Drakeriders that are on another Proto-Drake and kill them before jumping, which would make it actually easier for ranged classes. I'm not sure because I did this after I was done with the 10 mobs but I belive it should work before too.

Did it as a BM hunter. Dismissed the pet, got onto the drake. As soon as I got to the summit, i began wearing down the other riders with the usual hunter stuff - Arcane Shots, Concussive Shots, etc. After that, jumped onto their drake and finished the job.

I did this as a Survival hunter and decided i'd try a macro to try and help me.

Now, most of the time this would harpoon me to a different drake and while flying i'd shoot the rider.

Sometimes i'd target a nearby rider and crit him and he'd die, crediting me with the kill.

But one thing for sure, made this quest a lot easier for myself as a hunter.

-Also, to leave, just type /target column then /use Hyldnir Harpoon or click the icon - found it easier than trying to click.

This has got to be one the dumbest quests Blizzard has ever come up with. I've done this before with melee and never had a problem. As a Hunter, it was a complete pain in the ass and took longer than usual. The "exotic fighting style" was interesting but 4 times I was instantly knocked off the proto-drake when using the harpoon. Once waiting for another drake to circle around to grab onto.

It's an interesting quest, but I really think Blizzard didn't think it through for all classes.

One saving tip I fell from the drake But I was able to use my Flying carpet to rise to the lvl of the drakes and harpooned one from the carpet and resumed the quest.

Its important to try to jump to a close drake and then jump up from drake to drake to reach the top.

I don't see how this quest is enjoyable at all. My harpoon worked 1/4 the time. I kept getting constant invalid targets, spell not ready, an incomplete shot, or just no reaction. I couldn't even target a drake then use the harpoon? Ridiculous. There'd be no reaction. I'd have to use the harpoon and aim to a drake, which was damn hard cuz my drake took up half the screen so i had to zoom in to 1st-person.

Unexplained bugs/bad features aside, this quest is mediocre.

However, i did knock off a Hordie who was doing it, so that made it worth it.

This quest seems designed to screw hunters, especially 78 hunters. Pet not allowed, lower level than mobs, Traps not allowed, Ranged attacks not allowed = dead hunter. Give us a break Blizz. This was a fun quest on my other five 80's, but painful, if not impossible on a 78 hunter.

Everything about a hunter is designed to avoid melee. Blizz continues to buff hunter methods to get out of melee. Mail armor is a joke. I'll take boomkin armor or even warlock armor over the crappy mail. One step below plate, but it's totally worthless. Hunter melee attacks are a joke as well. No hunter wants to melee, it's ok to buff hunter's melee Blizz. A factor of 3-5 X would not be unreasonable. I'd still be at 20% health after each fight with weak-ass bandages our only means of health recovery.

If you want to make a close combat quest Blizz, you have to compensate hunters in some way.

Anti-Melee tip.

When you're on your first drake, swing with your harpoon to the next, kill the mob. Then, you target your own drake (without fighter on it.) and use your harpoon. That bug makes you able to turn all the way around. Shoot on nearby fighters with spells, and if they get too far away, use your harpoon on their drake, and then you got a clearly advantage in the melee fight.

Worst quest in all of wow. Yes, I dismissed my pet. Yes, I'm targetting the drakes, not the riders. Nevertheless, the harpoon seems to only work on drakes occupied by other PCs. So I get to hitch a ride with them until they harpoon another drake, and I fall to my death. Luckily, my body landed on an un-walkable ledge, so when I rez'd I immediately fell to my death again.

And if you ever want a shoulder enchant (Sons of Hodir rep required), you can't simply skip this bug-ridden fiasco, since it's part of the chain necessary to become neutral with them. Horrible, horrible quest.

Fun quest. Wait for someone to kill their rider then harpon to their drake. You'll be placed in the saddle with the other player behind you. From my experience, the passenger can't use their harpon to get away (someone did it to me, but payback was bitter sweet). You then harpon to another drake and watch as the passenger falls to their death.

As a side note, you can harpon to your current drake after you kill the rider and take their seat (saddle). This will prevent anyone from killing you. However, if they do harpon to your drake while your in the saddle....they've signed their own death sentence.

As a level 78 Survival Hunter I found the best way to do this quest to just shoot them from my Drake. If they got too far behind, or too far ahead, I launched myself onto their Drake and was able to kill them with my DoTs on them.

4. You can just sit here and wait for your health recover
5. Drink potions

It's possible you kick him off the seat, before he die.
No big problem, but it takes more time to complete it...

Wait! I discovered something.
When you harpoon for first time, you're at the back on the drake.
After kicking off in melee, harpoon again, but on same/your drake where you're sitting at. You move now to the front seat.
At front seat, you can now move freely around... thus shoot at enemies in the air. Hunters can now kill faster them.
But i have not tested the credit for ranged attacks. You may check it for me.

This quest is one of the best I've seen in the World of Warcraft! It's also one of the easiest =) (for a death knight anyways)

Two main things to watch out for:
1. If an opposing faction player jumps on to your drake, you'll end up falling to your death.
2. If you have ridiculous lag issues like myself and end up shooting a harpoon to a drake and the length becomes too long, you'll fall to your death.

My tips are:
-Keep moving from drake to drake (not as much if you're ranged obviously)
-Target the drakes closest to you, if you have to wait, wait. You won't be kicked off your drake for being on it forever.
-At the end of the quest there are little bulbs on the outside of the temple, target one close to you and fire your harpoon, you'll get shot up to the temple (Beware you will take some fall damage so if you need to bandage/pot/heal).
-Enjoy the quest, it is truly spectacular! =)

Tip for Hunters doing this quest. You don't have to fight them in melee combat.

With Hawk Eye (+6 yard range), I was able to shoot the riders from the edge of the platform up top, and did not even have to fly around on the proto-drakes. I actually dropped down just below the concrete edge of the top platform, onto one of the snowy slopes below, and just shot the drake-riders as they flew past. It may even be possible without the extra range from hawk eye, but that definitely makes it easier.

It should be noted, and my proto-drake could have been bugged, that after killing 10 riders I was not taken to Thorim and dismounting causes you to plummet through the air. Soloed as 77 BM hunter with horrible weapon skills......

Here is how to do it

Find a 79 mob since they are easier to hit and shoot it with serpent sting and what ever else you can get off before its out of range of shooting. Now jump on it's mount and melee till it falls off "because of the exotic thing" and you will get credit for the kill doing this way =)

Bring food so you do not have to wait to regen

How to dismount:

Once you are done, look above you at the columns. Each one has a 'ornament', you need to click on one and harpoon it. You will be safely taken to the top of the tower. On my 5th toon to do this quest, I finally figured it out! (previously I would use my hearth)

As has been said, this is a terrible quest for a hunter. I came into it with a staff skill of about 30, so i couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I found a good technique by kill 8 or 9, if you hit one on another drake with a range attack, then grapple over and keep swinging at it, your "exotic" fighting skill would knock it off and you'd get credit.

Also, don't make the mistake of grappling to Column Ornament with low health. You will take fall damage from grappling to the ledge. I died after finishing the quest and taking 2500 hp worth of fall damage.

Worst quest in the game for a hunter, imo.

Be careful if others are doing this quest at the same time. Besides being able to harpoon the drakes of opposing factions (resulting in PvP combat), you must make sure you do not harpoon a riderless drake, these are the ones that had riders on them before, and will despawn shortly.

I believe this has recently been made easier for hunters.

I went back to have a second bash at this after getting frustrated the first time round. Now, it seems that so long as you engage them for a certain amount of time, an emote comes up saying '*Player*'s exotic fighting style throws the Drakerider off-balance'. I'm not fully skilled up with the weapons I'm using at the moment, so they can't have been at less than 75% health when they fell.

Did this quest today as a level 80 surv hunter. Extremely easy. Simply used raptor strike and mongoose bite. Then again my gear is a little under the average ToC gear. (4600 gearscore addon) it took me 3-10 strikes to kill a rider and I did not have to stop for health or use any bandages. Living Bomb, Fire Blast, Blast Wave, Dragon's Breath, and the targets health was way down.
Then Scorch or Frost Fire, if Fire Blast wasn't ready yet. When I hit Hot Streak, the instant Pyroblast pretty much finsihed it.

I had no trouble at all killing the other riders and stealing their mounts.

The REAL trouble came when I had to focus my camera long enough to select a column ornament and use the harpoon to exit. I could not figure out why I had so much trouble.

Finally, I figured out I had to adjust my camera settings to ALL manual. Then, the camera would not auto pivot and auto adjust any more. Once I did that, exiting this quest was easy.

This was the hardest, but most interesting, quest that I have done yet.

I have to say that it is imbalanced for hunters, but there are ways around that. If you can target the riders before you jump mounts, just pop a Serpent Sting and then go over. Doing this I only had to kill 1 rider outright, the rest fell off. Maybe it was luck, but either way it'll make the quest easier.

80 DK back-filling Quests, the 10 kills were 2-3 circuits. Very easy. BUT, I had no control over the flight & the ornaments are ALWAYS out of range. After abour 20-30 circuits I did exit vehicle & died, just to end the round & round.

HOW DO YOU GET IN RANGE ? Second time I had to do this.

If you happen to have done the quest "This Just In: Fire Still Hot!" and if you didn't vendor "The Fire Extinguisher" AND if you happen to have only 1 weapon skill (probably Hunters), then be sure to bring The Fire Extinguisher with you. Since it's no considered any type of weapon, you will be able to melee attack things as if you had maxed weapon skill.

This quest is still buggy as sin. I dropped 3 times trying to hop to a drake. Didn't realize when you fly as a ghost mounted that you don't rez as a ghost either.. One of my deaths was to the npc you fight so I was dead in mid air.

A macro that i found very useful for this was quest was /target Column after i finished, simply use that macro/command and once you have the column targeted spam the harpoon till you're off the drake, hope that helps.

Ahhh, a very nice quest. Another one that was fun (and similar) is this: https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=13003. Hodir's Spear I recommend removing armor ('cept for items with no durability, i.e. Necklaces and Trinkets), but definitely not for this one. Sorry guys, you'll have to fall to your death a couple times, and get damaged. Fortunately, these girls don't hit very hard. Easy for melee classes, and even for casters.

I play druids, and always forget to root, but it doesn't matter for non-elites leather and up usually, and not for the drakeriders either. Hard for hunters, depending on what their spec is (keep your skill up with weapons other than guns!). Casters that can heal should have no trouble, warlocks can life drain... fairly easy quest, very fun, and opens up some great quests after this. Watch behind you and target the ones coming from behind, much easier than waiting to get in range of those in front.

I had a problem with not being able to dismount. I kept getting "Out of range" when I targeted the column ornaments. It wasn't until I jumped onto another drake that was a bit higher that I was able to dismount safely.

If you're a hunter doing this quest, read the following.

Right of the bat I'm gonna have to say that this quest must've been designed with little thought of hunters. However! I found that a combination of tricks made this rather easy.
First of, activate Aspect of the beast for the 10% increased melee attackpower.
Secondly equip your https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=39889 which you got from Zul'Drak. You kept it I know you did, who can say no to a trinket?
Thirdly, grapple onto a dragon and start pummeling Raptor Strike, then Mongoose Bite in that order, why? Because Raptor Strike applies it effect on the next melee hit.

If you need it, you can grapple back up to "Column Ornament" and take a break on the ledge before grappling back down.
Using this technique I was able to get 4-5 of them in a go before I simply popped a runic health potion. Very frustrating quest at first, then you realize this and it got easy. Oh, and btw, that trinket did about 20% of my total damage on 10 fights during this quest.

Actually, as a hunter there is no need to use the harpoon at all. You can simply target the riders and shoot them of the dragons using ranged weapon only. You get credit for the kill anyway. It's a bit tricky since they go out of range fast, but I still found it alot easier to use ranged attacks than jumping on them and using melee. Don't know if this works for all ranged classes.

Worse designed quest in the game. It's buggy even for melee classes - gotta love spearing a drake, then falling to your death when it goes out of range before you get on it.

I can just imagine them testing this, realising that it was buggy and going to be a pain for certain classes to complete, then leaving it anyway because omg it's such a coooooool idea /rolleyes

For druids, you cannot shift form during this quest. I ended up doing this in my resto spec instead of my feral spec because of this. They were simply hitting me faster than I was hitting them in caster form. (On that note, it is possible to switch specs while riding the drakes)

If anyone has a hard time with this quest and you are a ranged dps class. You can target the riders and take them down a bit before jumping on to there drake. I did this with a mage and even though we have a ton of spells that will hit them I wanted to see if you can kill them but not jumping on to there drake and you can. It's just kind of hard because of the ranges fluctuates so fast and they fly behind you.

Easily one of the top three quests in the game!

probably one of the coolest quests i've ever done. it reminds me of a boss battle on the legend of zelda. harpooning in between drakes, arcane barraging riders. woo, its epic! a definate must if ur questing in storm peaks.

W T F. this sucks as a hunter. worst part is if you die your screwed! I fell and my corpse landed on a steep slope. I tried to rez in the best spot available hoping I wouldnt slide off... but of course I slide off and fall to my death again. I go to try to rez again and my corpse is on the steep mtn side with no ledges in rezing distance! wtf. rez, fall. die. rez fall die. after finally dying so that i could fall alllllll the way to the bottom, was I able to mount and continue this quest.

Edit. Well, if your a hunter, as long as you read the comments here first the quest should be easier and a bit fun.

Tips for hunters:
*harpoon is in your bag
1 Level your polearm skill up first !
2 Be sure your mongoose and Raptor strike are of the highest rank
3 Put these 2 abilities as your 2 main hot keys and start pressing them right when you land on the proto-drake
(must target drake not drakerider with harpoon to jump to another drake)
4 *Create a 'Save' in your Equipment manager that equips Nothing so you can undress quickly if your about to die b/c you weren't prepared.
(have this on an alt but didnt have one for hunter lol)
5 If you die, try to rez where you have a clear fall to the bottom so you don't have to waste a lot of time flying back to your body (unless your lucky and have a good lookin legde to rez on)
6, Randomly, your raptor or mongoose abilities will throw the drakerider off for you since our melee is pathetic. It may happen on the 1st hit, or the 15th. (I was down to 3k hp on one b/c it never threw him off.)
7. To get OFF drake: target a column ornament and harpoon it. ( they look like fancy outdoor light fixtures on the columns)
8. I suggest listening to his sentimental story (which knocked me to 79 woot!) then flying to the next quest Mending Fences Riallacciare i rapporti , or porting... because it's a loooong way down =P

Often this drakes will fly close to you, and there is your change just shoot them down with some spells fast. if they are getting to far away just use the harpoon to jump on the back of the drake and kill them, as easy as that.

When I attempted to do this quest on my 79 hunter, my polearm skill was about 80 points shy of max skill. My gear had come from quest gear only, no enchants, and it was too difficult to pull the quest off as it seemed to normally play out.

After falling to my death one time I decided to try the method of shooting the targest as I rode by them. And though I could get off a shot or two, I couldn't finish them off - not even close.

I harpooned onto the temple place up on top. Ate to get my health back and then found a ledge to stand on just off the side of the temple floor. From there, I shot at least 3 shots at the mobs who passed close by, THEN harpooned to them and meleed them down. After a kill, I would harpoon back to the temple, eat for health if needed, and then go after another one.

So while there are likely quite a few hunters out there than could melee this as intended... if you find your gear and weapon skill is lacking as mine was, this is one method that is very simple though much more time consuming than the others.

With the onset of patch 4.0, this quest has been made harder for the hunters, again.

Now that aspect of the beast and mongoose bite have both been removed from the game, good luck trying to melee this one out as a hunter. The time consuming, ranged approach seems to be the only way.

this is retardedly hard now with the new patch for hunters, no aspect of the monkey to dodge and n mongoose :(

EDIT: after much search and dieing i came over this nifty litle trick. start off by standing on one of the clifts close to where the riders circle around, and either try and nuke one of the mobs down asap or in my case, just shot him with a serpent sting, target the dragon and use the spear, gotta be fast tho and targeting the rider wasnt too easy either. when u got first rider down it gets easier, wait for some of the others to get close enough to use ur bow and nuke them down with sting and arcane shots, rinse and repeat. IMO blizzard should do a serious overhaul on this quest after patch since they removed hunters 2 abilites in closecombat and is now only stuck with 1, raptor strike

Only way for BM Hunter to do it is looooooooooooooooooooooooootttttttttttttttttsssssssssssssssss of patience. No real melee abilities means they hit you for more than you hit them, and you cannot have your pet out.

The only thing you can realistically do is wait for one to come into range, hit them as fast as you can and hope they stay in range long enough. DoT helps. It took me close to an hour and 3 deaths to get this done.

It maybe just me but i don't really see what the fuss was about?

I'm a lvl 79 hunter. No special gear really. Took about 5-7 mins to complete. Picked up quest and rode on the drake. Once there, harpoon to other drakes. Ranged attack only (despite being sat at arms length). Used ARCANE SHOT over and over. Normally 4 shots to kill. By then focus has gone anyway.

Then wait 15 secs for focus to refill then harpoon to next drake. And repeat.

Once all killed, look to the left. On the pillars of the temple are lights, harpoon one and u swing across to the temple. Job Done.

Hunters can use bows now. Minimum distance for ranged weapons is ignored for this quest. This makes the quest super-easy (but still fun, imo). Please rate "+" if you play a hunter and can confirm what I say.

This quest is bugged 4-20-11: you can't target any of the riders to use the harpoon. They come up either as "Invalid Target" or "Target is out of range." You can target the pillars on the Temple to get off your drake. However, a post above mentions targeting a rider to get onto her drake to fight. This also does not work now.

Note about hunter
After die trying to hit the riders with the arpoon, I use lightheaded to read coments here. Thanks (bow).
I have to add how work for me: can not eat, can use shoot or melee, can bandage, can drink potions to heal, can shoot from your drack mounted to another rider if is below you. If happend you use arpoon to move to below drack cant shoot upper riders, so move to another drack up to shoot from.

Just finished this as MM Hunter, was able to range dmg each rider either to death or so close that I could jump on a give one raptor strike and one stun shot to beat them. Only trick was the different speeds they're all traveling, so sometimes it made sense to harpoon over to get the last few dmg points, but if they're traveling roughly your speed you can take 'em with a few arcane and a Chimera. And since the cooldown of the harpoon is pretty quick, when you killed ten and you're too low to get the sconces, just harp to a higher one, wait a sec, and harp to the sconce.

Even though you can range kill, hard to aim/time right and it's still an intense quest, definitely got my blood pumping!

BTW, didn't have to eat once, was able to range kill/dmg each one to the point where harpooning over to finish 'em was no prob.

Don't bother trying to do something fancy like "Killing Spree" or anything because... um... you'll re-appear OFF of your mount... and, um... fall a LONG way... and,. um.... you'll die a LOT. If this happens (just because you HAVE to see what happens like I did), you'll have to get your corpse and then fly back to the village and get another mount. You cannot use the harpoon on foot or on your mount.

I found this quest to be a lot of fun... right up until the end. I don't know if Blizz is now expecting people to check these posts first or what, but they leave you hanging without any clear idea of what you're supposed to do in this quest. Once I figured it out - after spending about ten minutes flying in circles around the Temple of Storms - I found it quite easy, even though I'm a Marksman Hunter (and consequently not the best melee artist around). Right up until the end, when it says "Return to Thorim" - which left me with a great big "WTF?", because I had never been to see Thorim in the first place!

For those of you smart enough to check here first, there are two important hints:

(1) While you're circling the Temple, target one of the other drakes (NOT the rider), and hurl the harpoon... you'll be pulled onto the other drake, where you'll have to fight hand-hand with the rider. When the fight ends, the other rider will fall off, leaving you flying around on the "new " drake (assuming you won the fight). You CAN heal/eat-drink/bandage while riding if you have to, so make sure you keep your health (and mana) up! Rinse and repeat until the end.

(2) When the quest ends, you have to harpoon one of the "ornaments" between the columns of the Temple. This will pull you into the Temple, where you can run over to Thorim.

I couldn't figure out the second part when I did the quest, so I just kept circling the Temple until I got fed up - and tried to summon my mount from the back of the drake. Of course, that caused me to dismount the drake, and I fell for a long, long, time before the final "deceleration trauma". I couldn't get back to my body (somewhere up on the side of the mountain), so I had to rez at the spirit - suffering enough equipment damage to make the quest pretty much a "wash" as far as gold is concerned.

But it was fun while it lasted!

On quest like this that are obviously buggy when you have a pet, the game should automatically dismiss your pet when you start the quest. That way locks and hunters will not waste large amounts of time. I flew around for 10 minutes and only managed to harpoon 1. And I was unable to harpoon the thing on the column until I got my first kill. I guess I could have dismounted which would have resulted in death and a poor score from the Russian Judge! (A little Olympic humor)

When I killed the 10 riders the harpoon icon disappeared. So I had to find it in my bags, bind it to a hot key (optional) and then click the ornament real fast then the hot key. If you don't do it fast the ornament will be out of range.

Any suggestions on completing this as a hunter since they took away our Mongoose Bite? I'm not able to defend myself well enough at melee range and you can't make ranged attacks on the backs of the drakes...

I'd like to be able to unlock the Sons of Hodir, but it's not looking like I can at this point.

That is one of the better quests that Blizzard has come up with! It did seem a little buggy in that sometimes you select a target and it won't fire the harpoon but then you just select another and it worked.

Easy to do except it doesn't tell you much about getting off of the drake.

Use the harpoon targetted on the closest drake to board that drake and kill it's occupant (they're not too tough) - when you've done that click on the Collumn Ornament nearest to you and use the harpoon again to launch you there. If you are too far away as you are on a low orbiting drake just use the harpoon to get you up to a higher one, kill the occupant and then try the collum dismount again.

It would be nice if it explained somewhere what you're supposed to do! I harpooned a proto-drake and I saw the chain appear... only to have it disappear a few seconds later when the protodrake got out of range. And, of course, that's all I could do because the target is "Friendly."

I decided to target one of the riders and started shooting. I was able to kill one rider - but every other time I tried, the target managed to either get too far ahead of me or ended up behind me making it impossible to shoot.

So, I decided to quit. I harpooned an Ornament to leave the area... and a few seconds later, that chain disappeared and I was still flying around the damn peak! Fortunately the hearthstone worked even though I was moving - or else I'd STILL be circling that damn thing!

So please, could someone do what Blizzard neglected to do: Explain exactly what is expected of this quest, and explain how it's done?

Welcome to deadzone hell.

If you are a hunter beware, you are stuck meleeing! Should be doable just remember, don't panic, and don't try to do them all at once, you can harpoon a pillar-scone, fly back to the giver and start where you left off after healing.

I somehow managed to get knocked of the drake three times. It seemed to happen every time I was harpooning another drake just as it flies out of reach.
So my advice would be to try and harpoon the drakes as close to you as possible, to avoid having to resurrect.
If you do happen to fall, just fly up back to your body and resurrect, then mount and fly to the top of the pillar where you should land on the edge, then use the harpoon to get onto a drake.

get a pair of axes /swords whatever you like ,put mongoose or lots of agilty on them they should give you enough of a boost to do it .a singlr 2 handed weapon has the damage but its not quick enough .also take lots of battle exlirs and health pots ...

of course its been a while since i did it on my hunter so who knows what blizzard have changed but the best of luck to you

For superior classes (Warlocks), this is about as easy as it gets.

1) As stated, lose your pet before mounting a drake

2) After you've joined in combat, fear bomb then DoT away.

No, they won't jump off when feared, but they'll just sit there in a huddle while you burn their souls

...As I just found out to my frustration, it seems that if a player of the opposing faction is also on this quest, they can knock you off your mount (thus instantly killing you from the fall) just by harpooning you first. And if you're in an RP realm, you don't even have to be flagged for PvP for this to happen. This may be true for players of the same faction too, but fortunately I haven't found that out yet.

Worst quest ever made if you're playing a Hunter. Puts you in melee range so you can't use your bow, can't summon your pet, and you can't place traps. If you're a Hunter make sure you have your melee weapon skill up to date before trying this quest. Spam Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite on cooldown and bandage after every mob. Worst part is you can't skip it because it's needed to unlock the Sons of Hodir dailies.

Here's how you do it as hunter:

Look for two dragons near each other with one slightly behind the other
Jump to the behind dragon and start shooting the dragonrider ahead of you
Once the dragonrider in front of you gets low jump to it and kill it
Harpoon has a very low CD so jump often if you need to and jump to the middle to heal if you go below 20% health (harpooning to the middle randomly does 10-15%+ fall damage)

Don't skip this questline it unlocks way too many other questlines including opening sons of hodir.

Just completed this as a level 78 BM Hunter, a couple of observations.

1. The riders are both level 79 and 80, AVOID THE 80S if you are not the same and well geared.
2. if you die, you just fly back up to the top of the pinnacle and harpoon another rider from there, took me a bit to figure this out.
3. Since I am not really the level or geared for this, not to mention being a BM hunter, I would harpoon the lights around the top of the pinnacle after each fight to eat and drink before the next. By doing this, it took a bit longer, but allowed me to complete without dying a second time.
4. As a hunter, I added Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite to my action bar to make the fight go a bit faster.

As a hunter, very frustrating at first, but once I figured out how to do this, man was this fun! I'm survival specced. Here is what worked great and was fun. Target a rider up ahead, and take a few shots as soon as you are in range. You only get one or two. I would get off an Explosive Shot and a Black Arrow, then leap to the target with the harpoon and finish off with a melee attack like Mongoose Bite or Raptor Strike. Really felt cool to use some range to soften up the target then go in for the melee kill.

Since I've spent so much time on this I might as well leave a comment.

This is soloable as a 78 Hunter. First you want to focus target yourself, since once you hop on a drake you won't be able to see your healthbar. If you do this while leveling make sure to level your weapon up to your level. And if you wanna be careful you can grab a slowfall drink from Grom'arsh Crash Site.

Then find a spot where you can hit riders flying around with your ranged attacks. Preferably a level 79 rider. You can only get a few attacks in and after that you have to quickly target the drake and hop on it and melee the rider to death. Remember to use your Aspect of the Beast, racial, trinkets, health pots, food, elixirs, anything. Once you get on a drake it gets easier, because you will be in range of the other riders and you can hit them from range. Very stupid quest.

Advice for HUNTERS to not dying 10 times.

Equip best skilled melee weapon (I had staff skilled to 380), use harpoon to jump on dragon, then spam on enemy moongose bite / raptor strike and THEN when you kill him click on device on pillars of the temple and use harpoon to jump on temple lvl. Restore mana and HP to full and repeat it 10 times.

You need to do it separate 10 times because if you try to kill 2 in a row without resting, you die.

Worst quest till now.
