Pretty simple quest, just attack Varidus the Flenser and let the NPC's attack the rest of the mobs. If you die run back and rez as quickly as possible as you will still get credit if Varidus has not yet fallen. Turns in at 41,53 in Warsong Hold.

Very fun quest. After an interesting scene, complete with the heroic appearance of Saurfang, undercover as an En'kilah Necrolord (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=25730), you fight Varidus with Getry and Saurfang's assistance. Should you die before the battle ends, don't release; there's a good chance that the two can finish off the enemy without your help. Be sure to stick around until Saurfang's departure for the beginning of an interesting sideplot.

I tried this quest as a 72 death knight... I started the quest and Saurfang never spawned. Together with Getry I managed to get his heath down a good bit but eventually he died and I failed the quest. I ran back and tried again, assuming it just bugged and again Saurfang failed to spawn. Anyone else seeing this?

Edit: tried it a third time making sure I was in range of Varidus when Getry was and Saurfang spawned.

Not sure if this quest is bugged but my pickup group skipped the massive attack. Instead we just simply killed Varidus as Getry was walking down the ramp. He ran to assist us and after Varidus was killed the quest was completed. Very odd.

This quest is bugged in the sense that neither Saurfang nor the undead adds will spawn if Varidus is aggroed before he stuns you and the dialogue begins, in which case youre in for a hell of a challenge if youre going solo.

This happened to me three times when random people rode past him before he got to stun me and the UD rogue NPC, resulting in me waiting for him to kill the npc, restart the quest and cross my fingers hoping for no further intrusion from careless riders.

This quest is truly dreadful. It's very easy to bug out; passing riders, being too slow getting down the ramp, being too fast, all sorts. The rewards are token at best and if it wasn't for the follow up quests I'd suggest just giving this one a miss due to the ease at which it goes wrong.

Edit: Wait until the less popular play times to do this. It's very easy when nobody else is around to mess it up.

This is the worst quest ever designed for this game. Random players can tag the boss mob, denying you credit for completing the event. I've tried to do this quest repeatedly, and after watching the event over 6 times, I have given up. If you want to complete this quest, do it when your server is at it's least-active, or wait for the initial wave of players to leave the starter zones.

I just completed this quest with my 71 Holy Pally.
Saurfang never spawned... 'cause Varidus the Flenser never got me below ~4,000HP.
Getry and I just finished him off ourselves! (although Getry still thanks a non-existent Saurfang at the end...)
Took awhile, but I just kept my Seal and Judgement of Wisdom up, and kept healing...
I was Tanking BTW, not Getry...

I think its a good idea to mention that you got to follow Shadowstalker Getry so both of you are in combat at the same time, just before the combat both of you should be thrown into a shadow prison, if and Saurfang appears.

This q was damn hard to me because im a lock, and i think the most guys that say that Saurfang dont spawn are ranged too (or cowards :)

Do not use a priest's bubble before this quest gets started, it wont finish the sequence and you'll have a harder time trying to kill him. Wait until after the Shadow Prison wears off.

Indeed a bit of a messy quest.

First time I got down the ramp along with Getry, and we both got a 2 min. prison during which absolutly nothing happened (no dialogue, no action, no nothing). After it worn off me, Getry and Varidus just stood there, Varidus still being un-attackable.

Second time Varidus was attackable from the start, before the event started. We didnt get prisoned and the fight started straight away.
Me & Getry put up a good fight but I was taking it easy, thinking that Saurfang would pop his head in for a quick hello, which he never did. So Getry died, the quest failed and Varidus de-aggrod and became un-attackable.

Third time Varidus again was attackable from the start, and there was no sign of Saurfang so I popped some more damage in the mix and managed to not pull aggro until the very end. After a fair bit of smashing Varidus died and I finally got it completed (70 blood death knight).

So even if the quest bugs out for you its possible to get it completed.

dismiss your pet first to make things less likely to get bugged out. Also, stay close to Getry as he walks up to ensure your capture.

I've been watching this quest for a bit now.

Who starts what:
Getry and Varidus are linked together in their interaction for the quest
Saurfang the Necrolord is spawned by the quest and seems to have a spawn timer also.
Saurfang's appearence starts the chat and the mobs.
Saurfang's appearence is connected to Varidus being attackable.
So..... the "bugging" of the quest depends on how long it's been since the last time it was done, and how successful it was.

The correct way the quest should occur is for Shadowstalker Getry and the one who starts the quest (only the one who start it if in a group) to approach Varidus and get shadow stunned for 2 minutes. Saurfang comes and has a quick chat with Varidus. Varidus summons roughly 30 mobs. Varidus should not be attackable until this point. FIGHT!

Bugged path one:
1. If Shadowstalker Getry dies then Varidus will despawn, however Saurfang will not.
2. A group starts the quest before Saurfang despawns on his own.
3. The quest will freeze up when the new Getry approaches Varidus, as the game sees Saurfang and is waiting for him to speak.

Bugged path two:
1. If Shadowstalker Getry dies then Varidus will despawn, however Saurfang will not.
2. The next group starts the quest "soon" after Saurfang despawns on his own.
3. Saurfang's spawn timer is not yet up, however since he is not there the quest does not wait for him to speak.
4. Varidus can be attacked at any time in this case. No mob will spawn.

I've seen this chain with Saurfang not spawning two times in a row, on two seperate occasions. On the third group, both times, he did spawn.

Bugged path three: This one is more of a guess on my part.
1. A group does the quest succesfully the way it was meant to be done.
2. While Saurfang is running away, another group starts the quest.
3. Saurfang is counted as still being there so Varidus can be attacked early. No mob, no Sarufang. Still trying to see if there is a reason behind this one.

On a side note, non of this is Saurfang's fault. Any indication pointing in that direction is simply a misunderstanding.

If you can't take this quest it's probably because you haven't gotten the pre-req.

Try talking to Shadowstalker Ickoris who gives the quest Get to Getry (which, if I remember correctly, unlocks this quest). If that quest isn't available, just do his chain. :)

If Varidus doesn't have shield of suffering buff when you start the quest he will kill Shadowstalker Getry, because he didn't despawn correctly. I've noticed this is caused by impatient people accepting the quest too quickly.

Great quest. More of Saurfang's awsomeness. Basically he disguises himself, comes out and beats the hell out of Flenser. Oh, and he says he will lolpwn anyone who mentions it to Hellscream that he was there.

So... pallies... don't consecrate. You'll pull somewhere around 50 mobs. Holy wrath only stuns for a few seconds. -_- If you die, run back quiiick because Saurfang wrecks those guys.

One tip though: while Saurfang and the rogue beat on him, you can stand behind Varidus and use him for some quick and easy weapon skill up points since Saurfang isn't going to die any time soon. Just watch out for when he does his AOE so you can back off and heal/bandage. If the rogue dies however: the quest usually bugs out.

If you plan on doing free weaponskills: simply fail/abandon the quest, retake it and there you go: free 2-3 minutes of weaponskill levelling. Easy way to get your "Somebody order a Knuckle Sandwich?" achievement.

This quest didn't go as expected for me. I wasn't sure what caused Saurfang to spawn, so I engaged the elite before shadow prison was cast on me. I blew all my CD's and went insane on him (Level 71 Frost Mage) while Getry tanked him (quite well). The moment I pulled aggro, I Ice Blocked and then went easy on my DPS. At this point, a random DK came and started attacking him as well. The DK pulled and died. After that, my CD's were up, so I blew them again and once again, pulled. The moment I did, I used Cold Snap and Ice Blocked again. By this point, he was maybe at 1/3P health, so I blew my CD's again (Cold Snap). This time, when I pulled, I couldn't ice block, so I blinked away from him for a little bit while ice lancing him. Surprisingly, he didn't kill me fast, I did have to use a potion though. Then, I decided to just wing it and try for an invisibility. It worked, and I dropped all my aggro again. I then DPS'd the boss's last 20k health down while Getry took the hits again. I got the quest complete as normal. I wish I would've taken a video of this.

As of 4/12/09 It is working properly, just getting a couple of hits out on the elite and let saurfang do the work, I have also noticed that it is only taking 2 minutes in its entirely instead of around 5 minutes before.

Just did this quest...still buggy. The instant all the other adds spawned they IMMEDIATELY attacked and killed me, without even going to Saurfang who was whirlwinding the hell out of everything. I still managed to ghost back and complete the quest...but it was pretty stupid nonetheless.

Following the shadow prison, Saurfang shows up and does his thing while I DPS the boss (just for something to do really) yet Getry for whatever reason fails to join the fight after coming out of his bubble.

The speed at which Saurfang scuttles off at the end is pretty brilliant, too.

Be sure to let saurfang uber cleave all the adds before you engage the necromancer. If you attack too early, there's a chance that they could start to evade. When that happens, odds are, the entire undead swarm will go directly for you.

And if you are a clothie like I am, you will probably die.

during the fight it says that "High Overlord Saurfang's eyes glow red for a brief moment" right before he goes into his crazy AoE rage. I know that orcs' eyes glowed red while they had the taint of the demons blood. Does this mean that Saurfang, and other orcs who were once tainted have the ability to turn it on that corruption for moments in combat now even after they've been cleansed of the taint?

Did this on my new warlock, only had to try three times. The first time Varidus cast Shadow Prison on us, then Saurfang came in disguise and... Varidus started beating Getry to death. Saurfang did absolutely nothing. Quest failed.

The second time we go down, Varidus says "Pathetic." and casts Shadow Prison on us. Saurfang's still standing there and we all stood there until everyone despawned. Quest failed.

The third time went almost normally, except only a couple of adds would attack us. After Varidus died, the rest of the adds attacked me and Saurfang was running the hell away. Quest completed!

So yeah, it's still a bit buggy. Proceed with caution.

This is a good quest to weed out the non-readers. If all you do is click through the dialogue, check your map for the icon and zip straight there to attack, you'll get destroyed.

When the guy says "follow me" it means FOLLOW. When he gets to Varidus the scenario will start correctly. Then just stay out of the way whil Saurfang kills everything. DON'T attack the mobs or they'll kill you. What, you think you're tougher than Saurfang? Fool.

I dunno, maybe this quest has been nerfed in Cata, but it was far and away the easiest (major) quest I've done.

69 Destro Lock -- I listened through the nonsense dialogue then tried out my brand spanking new Chaos Bolt on Varidus. I didn't target any of the other mobs, just Varidus.

I took no damage whatever.

How to not get this failed, do this:
Make sure no one just did or failed the quest, everything has to be completely reset, or it most likely will fail. When you are sure everything is reset, accept the quest, and do nothing. Doing nothing is what this quest is all about. Saurfang will come to assist you.

On WotLK Classic it's very confusing how to do this quest with the metric ton of players all trying to grab this:

Basically treat it as a weird escort quest:

- All abandon the quest if you already have it.
- You form a party.
- ONE guy accepts the quest.
- The rest will get the "join in on the escort?" dialog, accept that.
- Then stay close to quest guy so you get Shadow Prison cast on you.
- Not sure if you HAVE to get the tag on the Necrolord, but have the quest accepter spam his instants to be sure.

You cannot join in on the quest once it started.
