You can just collect them from the ground in the murlocs area or under water in the rift - they are quite small (see screenshot). They also drop from murlocs but drop rate is low and it's just way safer to just pick them up from ground.

This reminds me of the relic collection quest in Swamp of Sorrows, where you have to swim around the Sunken Temple.

Again, definitely a test of eyesight (and I am playing with maxed graphics). The clams are so small the classic golden sparkle is invisible from a distance.

also if your going towards the bottom of the ocean there is 2 things you can do either use water breathing potion or there is a few places where u can get air bubbles from :)

one lot of the air bubbles is near where Scalder swims along the bottom of westrift

To add to the notes, I found the spawn rate to be pretty slow on the clams based on the seabed. To give you an idea, I managed to kill the Water Elemental in the pre-quest at least 6 times whilst collecting them. Top Tip: Kill the Murlocs to speed up collection rate :)

Quest appears bugged to me. I'll collect a few clams, and then there's a "del" message and they are deleted from my inventory. Can't figure out a solution - guess I'll buzz a GM.

Don't bother swimming around in the trench - it's much faster to just go across the channel and pick them up from the Winterfin camp.

I initially was trying to get these to drop from Murlocs.. no point.

Start yourself off at 41,18 and work north through the different encampments. You'll find the clams glittering on the floor, usually nestled in around the Murloc tent/hut things.

Easy pickings this way, took me 2 mins to get all 10.

You can continue to pick these up after you've already obtained 5. Very easy way to buy a Siren's Tear = Easy money!

Took me 15-20 minutes to collect 105 clams this way, instead of 40-60+ through simply killing mobs.

Need 5 of them.
They are small clams are seen in the picture.
Look closely as the "glitter effect" that comes on quest items is relatively small on these.

To save on potions, as of patch 4.2 you can do Monitoring the Rift:Sundered Chasm at the same time.

During Monitoring the Rift:Sundered Chasm you are given a water breathing buff which you can ask for until you you complete the quest.

Winterfin clams may be small, but they still sparkle, just like any other quest item you're searching for.

After this quest you'll be able to purchase items from these murlocs. They want Winterfin Clams as currency.

Cross the water to the other side and kill the Winterfin Murlocks. They might drop a clam.

There are also clams that spawn on the ground. They are small, so keep your eyes open.

It is much easier to swim across the bay from the quest giver and kill the "bad" murlocs in the village for the drop. I experienced a drop rate of approximately 50% on these. Unless you really enjoy the water going to this village is much easier than swimming underwater looking for these.

I tried the water only because I had some time left on the underwater breathing I got the quest beforehand. That elemental mob respawns in no time down there.

Now that you can speak with the Winterfin, it is time for you to let them get to know you. One of the best ways to do that is to conduct business with them.

The murlocs prize clams over any other object and their only surviving merchant is Ahlurglgr. If I were you, I'd collect a handful of Winterfin clams and give them to him as a gift.

The clams can be found all over down in the trench, as well as across it in the Winterfin village and their caverns.
