I was able to solo it without killing Luanga the Imprisoner by kiting him away from Skywing. I'm not sure if it's reproducible, but after kiting Luanga along the bridge I got the message that the quest was completed. YMMV.

The elite you'll face may knock you down from the tower so beware. You fall down, you have to start it all over.

He is vulnerable to incapacitates and stuns. Interrupts are very useful as two of his nukes are potent and have 2 second cast times (chain lightning and lightning cloud.) His melee is fairly weak. He has a very powerful instant lightning nuke that he uses perhaps every 10-15 seconds. This is quite easily soloable by any class 65+ if you use consumables and abilities correctly. Use the line of sight of the tower you fight on to your advantage if you need to interrupt chain lightning. Do not let him beat on the bird for more than a few seconds. If he gets a cloud off, kite him (and thus the bird you're escorting) out from underneath it. On the way to him you will not fight more than two arrakoa at the same time.

After Luanaga dies, Skywing walks off and the quest is finished. But, Skywing says, "My mission is in Skettis," before he leaves. Has anyone found a followup quest for this? Does Skywing have a counterpart in Skettis (the big area accessible only by flying mount, directly east of Veil Shalas)?

Solo'd this as a 63 warlock. Best way is to pull the mobs on the last hut early so he doesnt spawn the elite, then when you fight the elite dot him up and run around the hut as fast as poss making sure you keep him on the other side. Once you have agro he will be to busy chasing you around to cast.

I tried to solo this because people were talking about it being easy. Well, when I got to the place the elite spawns, there was still a non-elite left (It did not wait until we had killed them all to spawn) and so it was me and the bird against them both. I tried to kite the elite like someone else mentioned, but neither the elite nor Skywing would move. I ended up dying. =

This quest took me two tries to solo as a 64 rogue, and I learned some valuable information:

-Skywing has 5,600 hit points and can defeat any of the regular enemies ON HIS OWN and be left at low HP.
-Skywing regens all his lost hit points in a matter of seconds.
-He also generates moderate threat and can serve as a tank if you are trying to conserve hit points or mana.
-He can last for a short while against the boss.

As a rogue fighting the boss, I blew all of my cooldowns. I had forgotten to bring healing pots so when I reached about 500 HP when the elite was almost dead I vanished and Skywing (who was at about 30% HP) took over the aggro. I stayed stealthed for a second or two and then cheap shotted the boss and finished him off while he was stunned.

It was very risky but I realized that Skywing could be used to save your life on the final boss and to buy you time before him on easier enemies so that you can eat or mana regen.

This is soloable. I did this at 65 as a prot pally, the elite battle was long but I made it. Prot pallys be sure to buff and heal the bird! The elites chain lightning will eventually kill it if you dont.

I did this quest up to the elite and then got worked by him, but it still said Done in MonkeyQuest, so I went to turn it in, and voila 13000xp, and the rewards :)

65 Fire Mage, soloed it fine until the end. Escortee ran around aggroing all the mobs on the last platform, I tried AoEing the 3 or 4 there were but they kept evading, and I died after they healed for the 3rd time. After dying though, they probably were all evading or something because Skywing transformed and completed my quest.

Whatever works I guess.

Soloed as a 64 ret paladin. Didn't have to pot but did use Lay on Hands. Barely managed to heal Skywing before he was killed when he took over aggro as I bubbled. All I can say is interrupt his chain lightnings as much as possible because they might kill Skywing before they kill you.

Ugh, this quest is still buggy. Failed the first time due to Skywing getting ahead of me {2 evade bugged mobs on the last platform}. When I rezed, I did so on the first bridge that you pass on the escort and cleared down from there. This allowed me to stay in front of Skywing through most of the escort, but he does catch up and run off to summon no matter how far ahead I got.

On the second attempt, I managed to get to the last platform just before him, but couldn't engage a mob fast enough, since the one on the right was still bugged and the one on the left was out of my LoS. But, I went after the one on the left and managed to pull the elite off Skywing. When he transformed he went after the bugged mob : / I got my complete and suicided rather than play evade-tag.

Had some trouble the first time I did it since the daft little bird spawned the elite and agro'd the 2 other bird men nearby.
I suggest getting ahead of the bird and pulling the 2 birdmen to the bridge. After those died the bird bugged out a little on a post but then teleported to where the elite spawns. It would have been easy enough to kill if it didn't keep evading, but the bird flew off completing the quest, so just got out of combat and walked off with a completed quest.

Did this quest last night; its still buggy. The quest was completely smooth but just before the final elite, the bird stopped for a good minute and hovered in midair. The elite was not spawning. Then the bird teleported a few feet ahead and I got a message saying I had completed the quest. The elite spawned literally two seconds after I had "completed" the quest. Skywing transformed near the beginning of my engagement with the elite and wandered off. Pretty screwed up ending.

just finished this as a lv65 hunter... the bird stopped for a good 1 minute b4 the elite spawned... started attacking the elite... i got a quest completed sign at about 25% of elite's life... my pet died but the elite had 500+ life left... managed to kill it and survive... (i did this solo, plus with laggy connection)
keep healing pet is best... good luck to all who tries...

I just did this on my S Priest(7/29), and i didnt even have to kill the elite to get the quest compleite, i just dotted it and ran out of LOS and got him to about 90% and then it was done

Solo'd as a level 64 ret pally. Had to wait a bit because apperantly he was dead. Wasnt having too much trouble with him until another guy spawned. Had to bubble and lay on hands. In the end he had about 1/4 health left and it said it was completed. Then i was caught off guard and he pushed me off the platform to my death.

Soloed as a lvl 65 pala. Didn't know I'd meet a lvl 65 elite, and was in combat with another mob at same time as the elite. Just managed to finish him off with 2% hp/mana left ;)
No LoH used though.
I noticed it seems you can complete the quest without killing the elite. Just run away after it's completed. Didn't try it though

you dont have to kill the elite mob, i was soloing this and in the middle of the fight i sunddenly find the elite mob ressed to 100 hp without healing and the quest is completed. i was so surprised that i stunned for a while and got killed :P

The elite doesn't need to be killed at all, in fact, when the elite engages with skywing, just peel agro off skywing and run to the bridge. He won't follow you and you can complete the quest without ever having to risk being killed by the elite.

I actually completed this quest in spite of being bumped off the platform where Luanga spawns. I didn't kill him or any of the adds in the last fight, but I still got credit after being knocked way down to the ground; it only showed up in the quest log though. This may have only worked because I had aggro on Luagna when I fell.

Also be warned that at one point, Skywing hops down from one platform to another that isn't connected by a bridge or anything. I thought I'd lost him; luckily I saw him and just jumped down to help out.

It has a bug ye.. but after trying 2 times before i finally got a way around it. The place where you jump down is a mob waiting for you. If you jump down and kite the mob on the bridge before Skywing, he doesn't get bugged and you can complete your q. Try it.

I tried to do this quest last night, it is still bugged, skywing stands still and does nothing, no move , nothing, I waited 15 minutes and killed mobs over and over , but it just didn't move

Also confirmed - clear the platform he would jump down to AHEAD of time, and the quest runs smoothly. Don't try to solo the last boss unless you're a high lvl. My 66 mage didn't fare so well, as Skywing doesn't tank very well.

If the quest bugs out on you with skywing not moving after you kill the mobs on the platform that you jump down to, then read what Everane said above: clear that platform BEFORE skywing gets there and the quest progresses to completion just fine.

Yes, as of 12/27, this quest is still bugged. However, as stated above, if all mobs are killed prior to jumping from platform A to B, Skywing will continue as intended. The final elite at the end has a number of rather nasty nature attacks, but is not a hard fight for a decent equipped character. Easily soloable escort quest with a cute pet at the end.

Aye, you have to kill the two mobs on the platform at 56.9, 70.7 BEFORE YOU START THE ESCORT so Skywing won't bug there. For people not with coordinates, it is the platform behind the big tree with the spiral stairs inside which you go into with Skywing at the beginning of the escort.

I had to try this quest three times as a level 65 Shadow Priest:
1st try) Skywing bugged on the platform at 56.9, 70.7.
2nd try) I killed the mobs at 56.9, 70.7 (57,71) beforehand, and Skywing didn't bug. However, on the elite I got an add, which killed me after I finished the elite, and Skywing died when the add was at 3% hp. Did I punch the wall? Why, yes I did.
3rd try) Quest finished.

OKAY IMPORTANT: Because Blizzard is so damned stupid when designing pets, there comes a part where the dumb bird flies down and you're supposed to jump down to a platform below. This is impossible to do for pet-users unless you're fast at re-summoning your pet. Good design, Blizzard. Way to go.

Also, the enemies here knock you back causing you to fall off and fail the quest so put your back against the wall. An extremely frustrating quest.

Quite easily soloed as a 65 feral druid... just remember to maim/bash/feral charge him to interrupt his spellcasts...

I was in cat for the first 30% or so, maimed, put up some HoT's, go to bear, he casted again, bashed, meleed for some time, when I was low HP feral regeneration + enrage... when he was casting move away and feral charge. Then I got low HP again so I potted ... then he was dead :)

Really hard quest, whiped once did it with a 64 frost mage(im 63 affli lock) he died by my dots at 240 hp and i used 1 health pot, tank is recommended :)

Tried this solo as a 65 BM Hunter, didn't work out to my liking.
The part where you have to jump down after skywing screws over your pet, when I jumped down, my pet could not get on the platform, and a BM specced hunter is nothing without a pet. I got knocked off, into 2 more aggro, so I was fighting 4 things at once. I managed to kill them all with the help of my pet now that I had been knocked down to him on ground level, but by the time I killed everything and got back up to Skywing, he had died.

Hunters: make sure you Dismiss your pet before jumping down

Pretty easy as a level 66 boomkin. Just follow him throughout all of the towers (it's nice to have the Signal Fires quest here, you'll pass 3 on the way") taking out the mobs as he goes.

For the last boss, I took aggro from Skywing, and just healed (Rejuv, Regrowth and lifebloom were huge) myself and wrath spamed until he was down, had to use one potion towards the end is all. I'm pretty sure that if I knew an elite was at the end I, wouldn't have done this quest, but it was easy for the most part, the elite requiring a little bit of skill.

Finished the quest today as a level 64 Enhancement spec Shaman.

Skywing jumped down the ledge before me and proceeded to fight the adds, so no bugging eventually!

Just popped Strength of Earth, Grace of Air, Healing Stream and Searing, used my AP trinket + Shamanistic rage and went at him. Came out of the fight with about 40% health and 60% mana.

As of 2.4, this quest seems fine. The birds movements certainly seemed buggy (he kind of quavers when negotiating into the tunnel to climb the tree) but we had no probs at all.

Myself (66 BM Hunter) and 66 Frost Mage got to right before the Elite is summoned and she was knocked back of the platform by the last mob. Elite popped and I nuked until the ravager died (which was kinda quick even with Mend up the whole time), Fire Trap, Wing Clip, run through, get what shots you can. Used one Health Pot and ended pretty close to dying but completed it.

Pretty easy, first i've tried this as a lvl 65 retri-spec paladin, but we died after dealing 60-65% damage to him (me and skywing). Later a lvl 63 shaman healer helped me out and it was no problem at all. Also is handy that the shaman puts earth shield on u wich will heal u on strike.

Just soloed this as a 66 Elemental Shaman (although I figure Enhancement could do the same), just pulled out my Earth Elemental and let it tank while I blasted Luanga to hell, just made sure to Earthshock his Chain Lightning & Lightning Cloud spells and it took maybe 15-20sec.

Really frustrating and annoying quest, last boss is hard, hits very hard on cloth.

As mentioned often bugs when you drop down from platform, the bird has amazing talents and getting itself killed so you fail.

I must have wasted over 1hr trying to solo it as a 68 mage, complete waste of time. Go as a group or not at all.

Soloed as a lvl 66 prot pally. It was actually much easier then i thought it would be. Skywing does alot of dps and combined with the durability and lack of dps of a prot pally it makes a perfect duo,as the fight starts,let skywing get to like 40% health the taunt of him,use judgment of wisdom and seal of light.

Keep your back towards either a wall or enough room or the fight will either be over, or if you saved your bubble and have truckloads more threat then skywing, a lucky break,as skywing will continue to dps while the elite will run after you. use this time to heal and run back.

This isn't recommended because if skywing gains aggro,there goes the quest. Anyway heal after every hoj and every time you bubble,immediately taunt,heal,then cancel,or else skywing will die. I didn't even use lay on hands as i accidentally used it earlier mistaking it for my divine protection /facepalm

Oh i forgot to mention,when Luanga the Imprisoner uses lightning cloud,move him to the other side of the building so you and skywing get hit for less damage

Completed as a level 65 frost mage with great ease.

Started at the beginning and went all the way through, no mobs were pre-killed, just went through as needed. When I needed mana breaks, I just let Skywing fight the mobs solo, while I upped, or I summoned the WE and drank while they both fought.

At the end, I couldn't kill the boss and I knew it, so I just kited him back to the platform I was at before (i'm pretty sure it's the one I jumped onto), and then he un-aggroed me, killed my WE, and went back.. I went back to help Skywing, reaggroed myself, he killed me, but the quest was completed because Skywing did whatever he needed to do while I was kiting.

Very easy, try the stratedgy out, you'll like it.

Here is a effective strategy for farming Arakkoa Feathers for Lower City rep if you have not already turned in the quest Skywing

Feathers can be turned in to Vekax for these quests:
The Outcast's Plight 250 rep
More Feather's 250 rep (Repeatable up to Honored)

Lower City Rep is used to obtain Auchenai Key a requirement for The Keymaster achievment
It can be bought at honored from Nakodu

1. Talk to Skywing to start escort
2. Follow Skywing - kill mobs and loot any feathers that drop
3. At end point of escort Luanga the Imprisoner will spawn
4. Kill Luanga and loot feathers (he has by far the highest drop rate over 90%)
5. DO NOT TURN IN QUEST
6. Farm more feathers off regular mobs while waiting for

Like mine:

Hunters and warlocks, when he flies from the top platform and down, remember to dismiss your pet before jumping.. My pet pulled 3 extra mobs while running around to come to me.. Got me a little extra excitement for a while.. :) Thank god for FD ;)

First did this quest on my warrior three days after the release of TBC. Took three attempts to keep it from bugging out.
was finally able to complete it by simply being in a group.

Leveling another to 70 now, unable to complete due to bug.

In other dwords, the quest is broken worse than before...

Common grinding for a drain tank build... just keep healing your demon when fighting the elite, after casting the DOTs.

Have your fel domination skill ready cause there's a platform jump while doing the quest.

Twice now Skywing has simply stopped after the 1st fight after the "jump to the next platform down" phase. First time I abandoned it, this time I'll see if a GM feels like helping me out ;)

Avoided the bug the 2nd time by hitting the mob on the lower platform with a SW:P while dealing with a mob on the upper platform, which brought him up so skywing didn't aggro on him there.

Unfortunately, the boss has 18k health.... that, I couldn't deal with right after the other mobs.

Confirmed today (12/28/07) by a GM that there is a know bug with the quest whereby if Skywing flies to the lower platform and gains aggro, he will be frozen in place. GM solution was to clear the platform first (as others here mentioned).

I cleared the platform first and the quest proceeded as normal.

skywing randomly stops and gets stuck for a minute or so, and gets teleported to the destination. He sometimes insta-transforms upon reaching the boss and stands there. One time, I even died midway through and it said "quest completed".
Finally, a bug in my favour. I'll take it!

i was able to put out the fires as i followed the bird, i lost sight of him the first time and realized he must have jumped down to the level below after the second deck. it was not difficult to do solo but solo for me is with my cat, i did not get 'complete' until killing the final elite but it was not a problem as a 64 orc hunter.

the locations are right on. i did find it easier to get to the flames with the help of the bird!

The Elite is indeed immune to freezing, so bringing a friend is very helpful.

Skywing flits around the base of the southern path to Veil Shalas. After starting the quest, he flies directly up the path towards the tunnel in the first tree, aggroing three guards. He will pause at the base of the tree after the guards are dead to let you rest. Then he flies up the tunnel to the platform at the top of the tree.

On each circular platform, Skywing will go around a full circle at least once. This aggros all the Arrakoa on the platform, so be prepared. Skywing is not an elite, so he can't take too many hits like other escorts can. The Arrakoa also have a small knockback attack that can bump you off the platform if you are too close to the edge of one.

After the first platform, Skywing crosses the bridge north to a second platform and does another circle. After those Arrakoa are dead, Skywing will *jump down* (fly down, technically) to the platform directly beneath this platform, requiring a jump to follow him. He does another circle of this third platform before crossing the bridge to the final platform.

As soon as Skywing hits the fourth platform, the 65 elite Luanga will be summoned, and Luanga will probably link the other Arrakoa on the platform to him. Luanga has a knockback that is stronger than the other Arrakoa, and it can knock you off the platform even if you are not near the edge. Putting your back to the tree prevents the knockback from working.

Luanga does not hit particularly hard for an elite and can be easily soloed the closer one is to 70.

I was with skywing at 56,70 for a very long time. Haven't seen an elite 65 or something else ! I'm waiting on this moment and the bird fladders arround without anyting.

It was fun trying to follow the bird, but at the boss at the end, I ended up dying... It was very weird because after, the boss kept fighting Skywing (after he transformed to hisactual form) and he said that I comepleted it...but I died...?

I reccomend clearing the area as much as possible before starting the actual escort, but it can be done without doing so as well.

As a 66 Marksmanship Hunter (6.5K HP and 4.5K Mana) with my 65 Cat, I was able to do this quest fairly easy. Used Rapid Fire, Kill Command, and the effect from my trinket Bladefist's Breadth along with an Immolation Trap and Feign Death, but in the end, it can definetaly be done. Be sure that your health and mana are full prior to battle.

I soloed this quest with my warlock and when I killed the elite, Skywing disappeared. Don't know where he went. Went to Rilak and he had a gray ? over his head which means I didn't finish the quest. But it doesn't say I failed, which is what usually happens when you fail an escort quest.

im not gonna show off about how i did it all i can say is you don't actually need to kill the 65 elite at the end, i didn't. i simply kept him occupied for a while and it said escort skywing complete.

i'm a 64 BM hunter.

if you really want to clear this quest clear his path b4 you start it, the bird will bug when he "jumps" the ledge because he attacks the mob below b4 he actually lands, kill that mob b4 it jumps and the quest wont bug.

I got skywing up the first tree and across the first bridge solo, killed an arrakkoa that he was fighting and he suddenly vanished! He was near full health, so wtf...

Was "just" about able to solo this today as 67 shadow priest. Would not recommend doing it without help though, as I only narrowly avoided dying. Was easy up until the last part, where I had 2 normals and a 65 elite to contend with. Used every single trick in the book (potion, mid-fight bandaging, cannibalize, engi trinkets etc) and managed to get him down with about 200hp and 100mana left. Boss was immune to fear, but his normal guards were not.

A bonus is if you have the signal fires quest you can do 3 of the fires en route, and the 4th fire (sapphire) is close by when you've killed the boss at the end. :)

Tried to do this quest 3x this afternoon and cannot get it to finish. It's bugged after you jump off the ramp. Skywing refuses to move after the jump :( Have a GM ticket so we'll see.

Soloed, 66 Pally, no problems at all. Easy-peasy. He stopped for about 2 minutes before the elite at the end spawned. Not sure what he was doing, but it let me heal and mana up for the fight. I didn't get the "Complete" message until the Elite was about half health and then Skywing transformed and helped me out the last half of the fight..

He just sat in one spot for 5 minutes last night and no elite. Blizzard GM said the standard "we're aware of certain issues with the quest and are working diligently to fix it." Yeah rightttt...I reported this months ago too and they've been through at least 3 big patches and haven't done a thing.

Spend your time doing something else more gainful in the game.

Just finished it 12/18/07 - (had done before and it bugged about jump).. but it worked this time. I didn't clear anythign first. You should get the quest Veil Shalas: singal Fires First before doing this. (from Kirrik the Awakened @ 37,51 Archedon) because you run by 3/4 fires while following the bird. - the Last fire is on middle floor of the hut the final npc is looking at when sky bird changes form (55,67) - but if you don't have a bird you prob have to run down and around and up.

I previously had done this quest Solo three times on a Warlock, Hunter and Mage; never had an issue. My assumption is last update caused some kind of issue with program hanging at jumping down point in escort. GM's just stated oh this is a known issue thank you for contacting us, blah blah.... So after multiple hours doing this in various ways here are some tips. Do escort with one or more friends/people. The Group part of this quest is not working either; only the person who starts it will complete it even if all party member have quest in their log. Meaning if there are three of you, you will have to complete the entire quest three times. Main thing to do, which has been stated previously, is have the platform tree you jump on to empty/clear of mobs by the time Skywing gets there. We also found that you should have final platform tree cleared as well before Skywing gets there. We found that sometimes if there are mobs for you/Skywing to fight on final tree platform (excluding Elite Skywing calls) he will fly back to other tree platform after fights and just sit there instead of calling Elite. So we had one person go back and forth and keep platforms clear while other escorted Skywing. We did this perfectly twice, if you do it this way you should not have any issues; it will just be annoying.

This quest is not bugged in TBC Classic. Some of the comments from 2007/8 still hold true though.

I did it as a L66 BM Hunter, but would not generally advise soloing it. Best to bring a friend. It's still necessary to dismiss your pet when you get to the section where you have to jump down. Be sure to keep your mana topped up, and be cautious about your pet - it needs to be kept fully healed as the elite will spawn in with no warning straight after a fight and there's no time to prepared.

I used Aspect of the Viper at all times to keep mana topped up, and as soon as the elite appeared I activated Bestial Wrath, rapid fire, my Blackhand's Breadth trinket and my turtle's Spell Shield. Was able to burn it down quickly - any attempt to drag it out would just have seen my pet die of attrition. As I said though, much easier and simpler if you just bring a friend.

EASY SOLO COMPLETION: SEE BELOW

Was soloing on my level 70 (not required) not aware of the fact that a pretty beefy elite is the final "boss" of this gauntlet (with little prep time).

Fortunately I found a solution by a happy accident. I was launched off the side of the platform (NW directionality, though I doubt it matters) while having aggro on the elite. He continued trying to follow me down all the way to the ground, and eventually (about 3/4 of the way of travel to me, seemed like typical distance/time for leaving combat) disengaged. Somehow, during the time he took to run back, Skywing transformed, and the quest then marked completed. The elite then returned and killed Skywing, but it doesn't matter as you return the quest in Shatt!

TL;DR
Jump off with aggro and decent threat on elite (survive fall) and leave combat. Stand under the platform and quest should complete without killing the elite.

Warning!

If you are suicidal and has no friends, take this quest with care!

If you are hunter/warlock, don't fool yourself that your pet will tank the npcs, because it won't. This is not problem, until you reach the final elite, but the quest is nice and the ai is braindead, so most likely when the elite jumps out of nowhere, there will be mobs on that platform.

N.o. 1 rule in this: NEVER EVER DROP AGRRO if your pet died/ressed, because Skywing will die, leaving you screaming at your monitor, before falling into deep depression that you don't have any friend/socal skill to get ppl play with you.
