To do this quest, bring the phase hunters down to ~30% and then use the battery charging blaster (provided) until the mob's name changes to "drained phase hunter." It may not change the first time, so you won't get credit for the kill until you make it change name.

There's an emote that reads:

"Phase hunter is very weak"

Then you use the item (melee range btw!) You can also skin them! :) Watch out for mana drain.

Despite the emote, using the Battery Recharging Blaster doesn't always drain the Phase Hunter (possibly due to the Phase Slip ability?), so use it a second time if necessary and be sure it works before finishing off the creature.

I just waited till I could drain it then just constantly drained it till its name changed. Worked for me.

The phase hunters have a mana burn spell as well which may require you to drink one or more times during the quest.

One thing I noticed was that if the chat log noted the emote "Phazehunter is weak" and i hit him again with a spell, then attempted to drain, he wouldnt shrink enough in size and therefore I wouldnt get the kill. But if i stopped bolting as soon as I saw the emote, then shrank him, i would indeed get the kill.

Molten armor didnt affect kills in any way (oddly enough if you think of what i've written)

The spawn rate on these things is amazing.... kill 3/4 and turn around and they have all spawned back again..

It seems much more likely to drain them successfully if you get them to about 10-15%. Atleast so it was for me.

During this quest, at 30,51 I tagged one of the Phase Hunters right before an ally did and the recipe for "Pattern: Resolute Cape" https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=24305 dropped. LOL and I am a tailor gg.

Having problems with shrinking them to kill? This is completely my own experience, but it happened 100% of the time. As such, it may not be completely accurate.

While the emote shows up at any % under 40%, I noticed I could NEVER get them to shrink at say 39%. However, once I lowered them to under 25%, it shrunk them 100% of the time. If you want to save time, just drop them a little lower, it worked for me.

i swear i drained one like 10 times and it never turned into a drained phase hunter...i eventually got killed by adds...ugh

As a feral druid i kinda found it hard to kill these after draining them since they have mana burn, so, what i did was, got them around 50%, threw rip and rake on them, jumped out of cat, drained them and watched them die. Hope it helps!

Theese mobs are very annoying because firstly they drain your mana so its godo to counterspell, silence shot or bloodelf racial and secondly they can get out of frostnova and slowing effects and get immune.

Small tactic for Druids to avoid having all your mana burned...

1. Go cat form and get 5 combo points (and them below 30% hp)
2. Maim them
3. Come out of cat form and charge the battery
4. Go back into cat form and finish them off...

Because they are stunned the whole time you are in Tauren/nelf form they will never cast mana burn :)

Coords above are good. This was extremely annoying for a 68 paladin, as they burn up your mana when your stun is on cooldown. Lots of drinks were needed.

By far the worst for a feral druid. Feral has a very low mana pool and high shapeshift cost (even worse without Natural Shapeshifter talents), and since you can't use items in shapeshift form, you will be shifting between caster form, cat and bear forms often. Plus, these mobs will burn your mana!

As a feral druid you might want to find a friend or someone else who needs the quest, just to make it less aggravating--or just take this info to heart when you solo it. (EDIT: Info may be outdated for WotLK)

I can confirm you can drain them 100% of the time at 35% or below. Not only that, but you can also skin the Drained Phase Hunters (and ONLY the drained ones)!

Phase hunters can be found on the northern, outer rim of Netherstorm. Just get them to below about 30% and use the Battery recharging blaster.

For some reason they actually become skinable after you kill the drained phase hunters.

Well, I think this quest is bugged. I'm fighting them to 20%, draining, and they get smaller, but I don't get a battery charge. I don't know if I'm just unlucky or what, but I've been stuck at 4/10 for the past 10 minutes.

EDIT: I abandoned and retook it, and now I can't get a single charge.

I found all my Phase Hunters north of Enkaat ruins. I waited till I saw the text "The Phase Hunter is very weak", then I used the charger device and acheived 100% success rate. I was'nt looking for skinning so I can not verify what i takes to make them be able to be skinned.

A suggestion for 80s doing this for loremaster, either use low level attacks or some debuff (as a hunter I'm using Viper). My regular melee attacks were hitting for 23-2500, killing the mob before it was drained.

Just in case, you need to take them down to 35% aprox. If you don't get the message "The Phase Hunter is very weak" but you still have one under 35%, it is useful too.

Just one correction to one of the posts above. The magic number is 40%. Once the wyrms get down to that you'll get red dialog text stating that they are very weak. Make sure you don't kill them before hitting them with the blaster first. Best place to find the wyrms is the eastern-most part of the southwestern island. If you're an 80 coming back to complete Loremaster try not to use strong attacks.

If you have Skinnig, you can skin corpse of Drained Phase Hunter. Remember that you cannot skin Phase Hunter corpse.

Ret Paladin after 4.0: simple solution is to aggro, put up Ret aura, and just let the mob tick itself down to 40%. Easy.

If you are a shadow priest, just be careful with the curses.
In my case, the way I used to apply a combo gives me the chance to kill the mob in a good speed so I let "shadow word: pain" just after the phase hunter changes to get this quest.
Maybe (if you consider that you're faster), you can get them easily just checking times but it's just an advice

As an 85 going back for loremaster, I wasn't able to get their health down without killing them.
I ended up going naked to get my stats down low enough, and it worked out pretty well.
Definitely an annoying one if you're over-leveled for this, but I have to admit that it's pretty fun running around outland in underwear xD

Phase hunters can be found to the north and east of the ruins, at the "edge" of the "floating land".

Just get them below 30%, then activate the q-item, they shrink in size then, that's the sign it worked. Then you can just finish them off.

It's not a drop, you just see the completed count go up from 0/10 to 10/10 AFTER the kill.

Druids need to take mana potions cause it sucks to come out of form, use the charger, and then have your mana burned so you cant get back into form. The prey uses mana burn often enough that you may only get a wrath off before you are drained again.

This is a really easy quest, when you are fighting them wait for it to say they are feeling weak, at that point use the blaster, DONT KILL THEM if they do not shrink, if it fails to shrink them use it again till it does then kill them and you will get a point on each kill

I have killed at least 20 of these guys, and even using the thing when the mob is ''very weak'' and nothing happens, it doesn't drop nor does it count in my quest log.

Sometimes the blaster does not work, so as previously suggested, keep spamming it. Maybe press escape too to stop melee and not accidently kill it.

When it does work, it always shrank the mob. However, the name of the mob did not always change to, "Drained Phase Hunter", but still works.

I have the very important task of collecting the machinery inside these ruins, but I'm having a problem keeping all of my bots charged up.

The phase hunters - those wyrm-looking things - have lots of energy! You can find them all over the edges of this island, floating in from the nether.

Fill the battery on this recharging blaster by using it on a phase hunter when they're very weak, and then finish it off to soak up the last of its energy.
