I think that a lot of people are misunderstanding the reasons behind this weapon. A lot of people are close to, if not already at, the block cap. Obviously we are talking warriors and pallies here as DK and bear tanks won't be using this. weapon.

Right now the best tanking weapon in 4.2 is Mandibola di Beth'tilac You aren't really losing that much Mastery and Dodge by taking the Souldrinker. Also, if you consider how close people are to block cap now, and then upgrade their gear to 4.3 gear, you will see that a lot of people are gonna be reforging back out of mastery anyways because they are OVER the block cap.

Since you won't be needing any mastery, dodge, or parry to reach the 102.4%, then this self heal proc is the next best tank feature. Also, to the person above that asked about the internal CD, it doesn't mention any CD of any kind. I am not sure, but I think that it is just a straight chance of proc and can happen on any melee swing.

I personally will be taking this weapon as soon as I can. The raid finder one is as good as the 378 version of the mandible. The normal version of Souldrinker is better than the 391 version of mandible.

Also, this is the most important point about this weapon. It is the ONLY new tank weapon they have added for 4.3. If we want to upgrade our weapon, we have to take this one.

Napkin math time! (inaccuracy guaranteed)

First of all, note that this effect is random, and the small dodge/block increase a tank would see is as well. Neither have any greater chance of triggering when the tank is in danger vs. when the tank is sitting at full health (though dodging an attack while at full health is a gain, self-healing at that time is not). Neither option is an encounter-saver, so the value is going to be in healer mana saved.

No idea if there's an internal cooldown, but I'll be generous and try calculations without one.
I assume it procs off of auto attack and abilities, so say 60 chances to proc per minute (40 possible ability plus at least 23 auto attacks, more auto with haste, but occasionally the tank will be moving or using a mitigation ability, etc).
Link says 15% chance to proc, or around 9 procs per minute.
Tank with ~200k health will deal ~2600 damage and heal for 5200. Times 9 is a healer savings of 46800 per minute, shy of a half million reduction savings for a long 10-minute fight. With overhealing (e.g. proc at full health) Call it 400k effective healing on that fight.

For the same item budget you'd be looking at 250 in avoidance ratings. Let's see about a prot warriror that has CTC, you'd be adding in 250 dodge/parry which would allow the warrior to reforge some mastery into more dodge/parry. Since 250 is already over 1% even with dimishing returns, and the mastery reforging is going to add even more avoidance, I'm gonig to ballpark it as a trade of 1.2% block (which could be crit block) for 1.2% avoidance (full damage reduction instead of 30% or 60%). For a boss attacking every 2 seconds (insert your own numbers here) that means of the 600 seconds in a 10 minute fight the boss will attack 300 times, and 3.6 of those attacks will end up being 0 damage instead of block-reduced. So if those attacks were going to average 40k (insert your own number here) that'd be a reduction of 3.6 * 40k = 144,000 damage savings over that long 10-minute fight. If the boss is hitting every 1 second and your average block/crit block is still taking 75k that'll be 7.2 * 75k = 540,000 damage reduced (finally better than the proc above).

What to do with these numbers? Well if you're facing a boss hitting you for 75k through blocks every second then the avoidance is better (and also, let us all pity your poor healers). For most fights (and ESPECIALLY magic fights where the boss melee damage is lighter) this proc will be more help to your healers.

Now, if they tack on a 45s internal cooldown, that's going to drop from 9 ppm down under 2 (close to 1 really) and suddenly equate to a very sad 10k healing per minute, and a sharded weapon probably.

Note it's currently marked One-Hand with no unique flag, which might be of interest for PvP SMF warriors. It seems at least possible that both could have the chance to proc on every hit.

Appears to be much like some of the healer equivalents catered around making future attempts and lockouts to be slightly easier, without making it a completely faceroll item.

I'm sure some mathematician would be giddy to prove me wrong, but I'm willing to bet a lot of frost DKs will end up rolling on this for the sheer weapon damage alone (nevermind the plethora of people doing it for the ilevel boost).

Imo this will be much more effective for Frost DK's than tanks because of the amount of hits DW frost can dish out. This along with killing machine + ROTFC and Razorice will be insane because of the amount of self healing and extra damage being done. Tanks should only get this is there isnt a frost DK

This is a fantastic tanking sword.

It doesn't have any secondary stats, but the proc more than makes up for it. Using the heroic Mandible for comparison (143 dodge, 112 mastery), the dodge and mastery on the mandible result in about a 0.5% additional raw damage reduction assuming you're in 378ish gear (it's less if your gear is better) but still under block cap. For a boss that strikes for, as a guess, 250K raw damage every 2 seconds, this works out to be a reduction of about 625 damage taken per second. That 625 dtps is equivalent to 625 extra hps that a healer would have produce if you didn't have the stat points on the sword.

Now look at this sword. Assuming about 200K tank health, that's about 5.2 to 6K healing every proc (depending on which version of the sword: LFR, normal, or heroic). For a 15% proc rate and about 1.4 melee hits (including abilities like Crusader Strike, etc.) per second, that's around 560 to 640 hps healing.

So at first glance the two are roughly equivalent, but here's the thing: the proc scales, but the stats (dodge/parry/mastery) don't. Once you're at block cap, extra additions to dodge/parry give significantly less benefit and are subject to diminishing returns as well. For example, if you're already block capped before equipping a weapon, and you get something like the heroic mandible and are able to effectively reforge 100% of the mastery to dodge/parry, the raw damage reduction is only about 0.3% (reducing the 625 reduced dtps to 375). The proc doesn't suffer from that problem, and keeps getting better and better as your stamina increases. It's to the degree that, if you're at block cap, the LFR version of the sword is better than the heroic Mandible, despite being at a lower ilvl.

As additional dodge/parry/mastery become less and less valuable, this proc is ideal. If Blizzard doesn't nerf it (note to Blizzard: please don't), I suspect this weapon will be the Mirror of Broken Images of this tier: a piece of gear that will remain really useful for a long time to come.

I just finished LFR version of Deathwing as a frost death knight and this really seems to be tanking weapon, at least according to Blizzard. This blade was the sole reason i went through the whole thing and i was rewarded with the sight of a happy paladin tank with his new sword. I'm not saying he didn't deserve it. What i am saying is that with this sword falling into hands of tanks, Deathwing LFR does not offer any weapons for frost-specced death knight. And if you're gonna mention the 2H sword you can get from Deathwing, you better bring in some math with you to prove that it really is an upgrade to 2x 378 one-handers.

Alright, I got the LFR version of this last night, and put it to a solo test today: Slabhide (Normal)

Prior to 4.3, the only gear change was the weapon (was the 359 mace from Maloriak).

Pre-4.3, to solo Slabhide was a near-10min fight, that consumed a bandage on every air phase, and cycled all my CDs as they cleared constantly, with many riskier times than I'd like.

Fast-forward to acquiring Souldrinker: 5min 3sec fight, never bandaged, used WoG about once every 30 sec, used Holy Shield for CDs really. Total DPS: 8k, Total HPS 2.5k (between WoG, Seal of Insight, and weapon Proc).

This thing is freakin' awesome. Also, I noticed it generates alot more procs with multiple targets and AoE attacks. Doesn't seem to have an ICD, as I've had combat text showing after a double-sized Drain Life proc from the sword.

While it may be beneficial in the long run for DW plate dps, the tooltip suggests that the weapon is intended for tanking. The healing portion is DOUBLE the damage proc and it scales with stamina. If it was intended to be primarily used as a dps weapon then surely the magnitude of the damage proc would outweigh the healing percentage and it would scale off str or atk pwr. Not saying this weapon isn't good for dps BUT the tooltip suggests that it was designed with tanks in mind.

No real point in debating who should get this, tbh. It drops from raid finder so anyone who can roll on it is going to hit need and have an equal shot at it.

That said, its BiS for SMF warriors, prot warriors, prot paladins, and frost DKs.

People who are going to roll on it and get a roll bonus regardless of not being in the above specs:

Ret paladins
Arms warriors
Unholy DKs
Blood DKs
TG Warriors

There is going to be a ton of comp for this weapon, so cross your fingers, click need, and hope for the best. If you don't win it, better luck next week.

Dont forget: If you dont like how many of a certain class are in the raid, you can always leave and requeue again till you find a raid that has fewer players of the aforementioned classes in it.

Plain and simple..DK's can roll on it. Tank weapon or not,it's a great one handed weapon that's pretty easy to obtain. I will roll on a second for my frost DK the next chance I get. It's the same old "I pay my $15 a month and will play how I want"...

I just did a test on the training dummy using this weapon. Only autoattacks, on 10,000 swings this weapon procced 1,356 times for a 13.5% proc rate according to Recount.

I tanked yorshaj heroic 10 man as a protection paladin with this weapon. i had 220k hp and it healed me for 614k during fight. logs are here. i think its awesome i dont think i will change it with any other weapon other than normal and heroic versions of this one.

Gonna be some mad tanks at me for my SMF warrior and Frost DK, since this is the only 1 handed STR weapon, since apparently the Hand of Morchok is unobtainable in RF. I don't schedule my life around a game so joining a guild to raid is out of the question. I play when I feel like it, and if I feel like going to my buddies to do something else I will. Don't get why they would make something not obtainable. Its still weaker than the actual raid version or heroic.

The weapon in question appears to be Souldrinker. Contrary to common belief, Souldrinker is not a tanking weapon as there are a complete lack of tanking stats. While it is great for Warrior and Paladin tanks, it is catagorized as both a tanking and DPS item. As such, both tanks and DPS are allowed to roll on it so long as the primary stats are reasonable for their class.

I believe it is safe to say, it does proc off Special attacks and abilities that are melee and has about a 15% proc rate. There is NO internal Cool Down because i have seen it proc 3 times in a row while testing. So if it does, its less than 1.72 seconds.

Just so u guys know.. the proc on this wep does about 1-2k and did around 100,000/ 120,000 dmg over a 5 min fight.. the raidfinder version of souldrinker is beyond terrible for a frost dk lol. you are better sticking with Mano di Morchok until you get the 403 souldrinker https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=77193.

I kinda feel bad for a tank...whenever I see a frost Dk wielding two of these.
I have yet seen a SMF warrior use them...nor have I seen a SMF in the game yet...
I mean I guess the sword does "drain" their enemies health away. But, I can't feel helping that a Frost DK would do better with a sword with stats than this.

But, maybe I'm just looking into it too much on how it heals you.

LFR loot is broken.
Good luck, but don't expect to win this.

Dps will need just because they can. Or they will try to sell/trade it. Or give it to a guildmate. Or just troll and keep it.
But, they will always need. I have seen so many items lost because of OS/guilds/trying to trade/or just because they could.

Contrary to many of the comments here I HEAVILY recommend using this on a DW Frost DK. The reason being is that there is no ICD on the weapon and it is one of the best Strength 1H in the game at the time of this comment. It also is a rather slow sword which will benefit DKs even further as most of their damage scales off of weapon damage.

Also I will say they are better axe alternatives, but for those that insist on using a sword this and its upgraded counter parts are the end all be all.

Why is this getting down-rated? I know tanks aren't happy that it is NOT a tanking weapon (As per Blizzard staff), but that is no reason to down-rate a post.

For some reason, Despite there not being a tank weapon from Dragon Soul(That I've seen), this is itemized for 1h dps which really have no need for the % hp heal.

Instead of taking the time to just make 2 diff 1h swords, 1 for DPS, and 1 for Tank, they decided it'd be cool to have 1 weapon go to both, and screw over the very small percentage of tanks(considering most people are dps).

It's cool though, Blizz loves to screw up their loot.

I'm sorry, but this weapon pisses me off more than anything in the game. (That's saying a lot.)

Not only are tanks going to fight over this, but with the millions of frost-DKs, it's seriously the most infuriating weapon to win.

I just got out of a LFR as my tank pally and 2 of these dropped. The other tank had one. It's in the bag, right? Ha. No. Both went to two DKs who ran away as soon as they got them. (One DK already had one, not sure about the guy who ran too fast to check.)

Ok, so Blizzard's ticket said "Well this isn't exactly a TANKING weapon". Then... why can't we just have one? Give SD to the million and a half DKs and let them squabble it out, and make us something more... tanky? I honestly do not like all the parry and mastery I lose if I use this, but what other weapon am I going to aim for?

I DW these on my Frost DK, because healers suck, healing DPS DK's.

I learned on my first run through Grim Batol - did twice the DPS of anyone else & died 12 times - don't rely on healers. And I'd run 4-5 other toons through there before. So I knew the fights.

Ironically transmog to look like Rimfang's claws, that I ALSO DW'd, for the same reason pre-Cata.
