I want to revive my dormant shaman healing spec. I cannot decide between Ward of Incantations and Demonic Skull. I am thinking that it is not necessarily an easy choice and it all boils down to whether I need the spirit or not for mana? Am I on the right track here? In other words, keep both and try both and then decide.

I stand by my decision to try both and decide. Spirit is not everything these days as we soon saw in Cata. I eventually went with the Ward of Incantations by the way as my mana was doing real fine in guild runs. Down voting me I thought was a bit mean if you just disagree on a debatable topic. The data/info was correct as well so also no need to down vote.

Yes while it is true, that spirit is your main source of mana regen as a shaman, it also contributes to Mana tide totem. This however is not the full story.

If you spec into Telluric currents, then you recieve 40% of the damaged caused by any lightning bolt back as mana. So if you have more haste, then you can spam lightning bolt more. I use this tactic myself and never run out of mana.
The only time you would probably want to change this is when your whole raid is taking high amounts of damage, and it's simply not possible to thread lightning bolts between heals.

For your information, the most important (realistically reachable) haste breakpoints (extra tick from riptide HOT) are 916 and 2005 haste rating respectively.

So if you are at or over 916 but are unable to get 2005 and are specced TC, then go for crit -> mastery -> Spirit.

If you are at or over 916 but unable to get 2005 and NOT specced TC then go for spirit/mastery->haste->crit.

In summary as this is an alt, you should be aiming for 916 haste, then stacking spirit and mastery as you are limited by gear so I would imagine in your situation, this offhand would be weighted more for the stats you would want compared with the shield.

As a holy paladin who had already purchased Silver Sabatons of Fury, I opted to take the skull over the healing plate boots for this quest. While the stats are nice, I feel NAKED with no shield on my back when I heal. IMO, a transmog OH to look like a shield for classes that can equip shields would be nice. I can dream.

Since the drop rate on the ward is approaching the Grinning Skull Boots level, if you're a holy paladin, I would recommend snagging the 397 boots from the valor point vendor (Since they're BoE, people can buy them for you, typically for 1.5k or less) and getting the skull from this quest.

If you don't mind looking like a naked holy pally or have people go "where's your shield pally?" when you do LFG, that is.

It's a toss up between 129 spirit with the skull and 66 mastery and 63 haste with the ward (assuming you reforged the skulls mastery to haste like a good holy pally). Once you can't stack anymore int, it's secondary stats and mana regen to comfort.
