When you get the quest you will also receive IN YOUR BACKPACK the "Elemental Nullifier". Use this to weaken Animus. The first time I just used it over and over until he died. He dropped the Stone in the area under him and I was unable to reach where it fell and thus was unable to loot it. The second time I stood off a ways and used the nullifer, pulling him to me, away from the crater he is hovering over and just used the nullifer over and over until he was dead. He dropped the Stone, but it did not glow like loot and I could not pick it up. A few seconds later it disappeared. THE THIRD TIME, I used the nullifer to weaken him, pulled him to me, away from him crater and made SURE I hit him at least once. He dropped the stone and I could pick it up and turn it in.

Not sure why the second time did not work, but in the end I got it. :-)
