This is obtained through the dungeon finder by doing the Brewfest boss, you can only get it once a day.

(the trinkets still drop from Coren Direbrew, and you can kill him as many times as you like)

And in addition to this, you most likely get some Valor/Justice points for killing him once a day.

I truely hope, that next year, they will make this item Binds to Battle.net account, instead of Binds when picked up. This would help us mount collectors alot, and I dont see why they shouldn't make it so, when they have done it with Satchel of Exotic Mysteries.

I got online today, clear direbrew in 30 seconds and received 1 mount and a Tankard o' Terror and a shanker. The drop chances are MUCH higher in my opinion. (Im still in shock from all the loot)!

You guys are looking at it in a bad way.

You assume that doing this once per day means that they reduced the chances of getting the item. That's not true at all.

The previous method had it where you would have 5 attempts to kill Coren Direbrew and then you would have 5 chances at whatever it was that dropped per day. The loot from those 5 attempts must be rolled by all 5 characters. In this method, each of the 5 people every day have their own "loot table" in which of something drops, it belongs to them. Technically, based on luck and RNG, this does NOT change the probably of something dropping for you. It might however give you the chance of getting something twice and being unable to roll for it.

I got the Brewfest Kodo outta my Keg, I couldn't imagine forcing myself to cough up money to ask someone else that won it to give it to me. I think this method is much more "cleaner". Not necessarily better, but to me nothing in probability has changed.

Even if it were a statistical wash with your odds of getting a mount drop before, being able to bypass the rigmarole of 1) getting a group of five together to do the quest (taking on faith that all five are being truthful about having the quest available still) 2) Getting them all to BRD and 3) mowing down Coren five separate times is a a win for most players.

Given that anecdotal evidence is strongly suggesting a much improved drop rate, the improvement becomes overwhelmingly clear.

The only players for whom this is worse is if you have unlimited funds and a life-or-death imperative to get a mount by any means necessary. (I myself paid 4k for a ram last year, which in retrospect seems profoundly silly. Hey, I love rams and I play horde!) Under this system, it's certainly possible for unlucky players to run the attempt once a day during Brewfest, get no drop each day, and simply be SOL.

I know this seems silly, but everyone seems to be having quite a bit of luck when it comes to this event.

I got a keg today with only x2 Frost Emblems.

Was I suppose to get a rare drop? or is it normaly for some people to only get the 2 Emblems?

Just to confirm that you can get multiple items from the keg. I got extremely lucky apparently. I received the Brewfest Ram, The Shanker, The Tankard of Terror, and the Direbrew Remote all in the keg on my first time doing this. Worst part is it was on my alt whom I never play anymore.

It does seem to me they increased the drop rate though on these items based on the amount of mounts I've seen drop this early.

This new method is far superior, no wondering about who has summons or who should go first, and a much shorter 'daily' as you only kill him once if you are looking for rare drops. One group I did this morning killed him in 10 seconds (high GS and bloodlust).

As for the bag drops, the previous comments are correct, it is truly random and does not take into account what you may already possess. My hunter got a remote yesterday, and got a 2nd this morning (they share CD's sadly).

Quite looking forward to Headless Horseman.

The Keg-Shaped Treasure Chest is automatically looted when you kill Coren. So if you have a full inventory like I did, you won't get it. It's not on his corpse, and if you run the encounter again, you won't be rewarded with a second chance to get your Keg. I just wasted my run for today because I wasn't paying attention. So beware!

If this happens it'll end up in your mail! Thanks to Cindered for this information!

I would think Blizzard increased the drop rate slightly seeing as we only have 16 chances as apposed to roughly 80 (if you did it 5x a day) on a character from years past. It really does seem like more people are getting items especially the rare mounts.

I did the Brewfest boss for the 2nd time on my alt pally this morning and to my surprise the Ram, Kodo, and the boe tankard all dropped in the same Keg

I'd really like to see the holiday items turned BoA. It would be much more exciting to know that the drops could be sent to alts who might be able to use them. Particularly since they can't be DE'd. Not just Brewfest ones, either. It would fit the holiday mood for gift giving if I could regift some of my old trinkets to younger alts who could use them. That and the fruitcake. Really, Fruitcake should NOT be BOP.

ive got mixed feelings about this new lil system. its awesome that there wont be any competition for the special drops, but personally, i have just about THE WORST in game luck. i have been trying for three years now to get that ram. dont want the kodo, for as a tauren, im just plain sick of them. always getting stuck in EVERY doorway.... anyways. so far, every single day, i wake up early excited to try again for the ram, and what do i get? a couple of hope crushing frost emblems. yay me.

by trying for two previous years, i just mean that i have the worst luck and my parties are full of asshats, just to clear up anything misconstrued. :)

Still a relatively small sample size so take it with a huge pillar of salt but so far out of 238 bags (17x 14 days) I've come up with:

I've been runing through this event for 9 days with 4 toons and I'm yet to see a mount drop... I'm pretty sure blizzard lowered the drop rates! ;-)

Anyway, whoever says the new Keg-Shaped Treasure Chest is an improvement is forgetting one thing : guildmates! Most of mine don't care at all about mounts (and I used to be like them). On previous editions, I could have queued with several of my guildies reroll and run through this event a lot more than 5 times a day,

And now that I've started gathering achievements and mounts on my main, it's no longer possible, and I'm left with pure RNG... Seeing how lucky I am so far, I guess I'll end up with one mount drop on the alt I less care about!

And now I fear It will be the same with "Hallow's End" items. Since I'm only missing the Hallowed Helm for my Sinister Calling => Hallowed Be Thy Name => What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been, I'll probably never get the Reins of the Violet Proto-Drake...

You sir are correct, that is not how math works. This is how math works:

Let X be the event that you get the Great Brewfest Kodo. Because there is a chance that you will get the Kodo, X is a random variable. Furthermore, because you either get the Kodo or you do not get the Kodo, X ~ binom(n, p), where binom() is the binomial distribution, n is the number of trials, and p is the probability of success.

Now, let's assume that you run the Coren Direbrew dungeon once per day, every day during Brewfest. That means that n = 16. Next, there are two different drops rates given by wowhead for the Kodo, 1.6% based on previous years and 2% based on this year's limited data. Therefore, p = 0.016 or 0.020 (I shall use both in the calculations below).

To determine the cumulative probability of an event, you must evaluate P(X = x | n, p) = (n choose x)*p^x*(1 - p)^(n - x). Thus, the cumulative probability that you will get a Kodo by the end of Brewfest is P(X = 1) = (16 choose 1)*(0.016)^1*(0.984)^15 = 0.20098 or P(X = 1) = (16 choose 1)*(0.020)^1*(0.980)^15 = 0.23634.

As you can see, there is roughly a 20% chance that you will obtain the Kodo by the end of Brewfest. Additionally, because the events "you get the Kodo" and "you get the Ram" are independent, but not mutually exclusive, these calculations are valid for the Ram. The independence of the events also leads to the conclusion that you have about a 40% chance of getting one or the other (but not both, that would be P(X = 2)/2 = 0.018085 ).

Obviously, I prefer to rely on the older data because there is a much larger sample size, and is therefore more accurate.

Edit: Brewfest is shorter this year than it was last year, so the above probabilities slightly overestimate what should be expected this year. Using 2% drop chance and 13 days you should arrive to P(X = 1) = (13 choose 1)*(0.020)^1*(0.980)^12= 0.20403; and using 1.6% drop chance, you should arrive at P(X = 1) = (13 choose 1)*(0.016)^1*(0.984)^12 = 0.17140.

Edit 2: Ignore the previous edit, I can't count. Brewfest is still 16 days this year.

Not sure if this was posted or not yet, but the minimum level to que for Coren is 78 (not 80). So those of you with high level alts who aren't quite 80 yet can still get frost emblems as well as a chance to get the rare drops =D

If it was just 1 or 2 toons I could see it just being the RNG but ever since around Friday-ish the drops in these seem to have well...dropped off big time. Out of the last 4 days I've had 2 of those days with zero bag loot (other than frosts obviously) on 14 different toons. Even if that happened on just 1 day, 14 "empty" loot bags is virtually the equivalent of a single toon player going the entire holiday without even getting a shanker/tankard/remote nevermind a mount. Under the assumption it IS just the RNG being freaky, I can understand people not being overly happy about getting similar luck if they are in fact just doing the event on one toon.

Just for some info... I did the dungeon at least once a day except for one day (So i got the keg everyday during brewfest except for one day). My loot was 2 Emblem of Frosts every time, and i got one Brewfest Kodo and one Brewfest Ram

I absolutely hate everything about this game that revolves around RNG. There are people out there who are bitterly forsaken by Luck and suffer from it in every one of these events.

I try for every Random Mount that I can (except Baron Rivendare's Deathcharger 'cause it's boring to me) and yet I have seen only Brewfest Ram drop ONCE and I lost the roll. That and when the Fiery Warhorse dropped and I got a 1 on the roll.

This year I thought "Hey, you won't get ripped off by people claiming to have summons this year, that's cool..." but then I realized that this also means that if you run with people you know and trust and they get..."for example" Swift Brewfest Ram twice in a row (day after another) when they already had both mounts from a previous year, they can't give one to you.

If someone who doesn't care about the mounts gets the Ram and the Kodo both that year, there is no giving that item away to someone who actually wants it.

I had to watch 2 rams drop and get destroyed, and both a Kodo and a Ram drop for my GF who doesn't care about mounts on the toon she plays with me.

It's not fair to the people who played the game nicely to do things this way, because you end up with people who get in my situation. I didn't get one mount...that's every year so far, I try for the mounts (every single one) and it never drops. I wish that they weren't BoP to the point that they're untradable when they come from the bag. My GF got a second Blue Drake the same way...it's broken and unfair.

Though I agree that it should be random and if you don't get the mount, too bad... But in most cases it is just annoying. On day 4 I got both the tankard and shanker... Sold the tankard and banked the shanker. On day 9 I got the remote! That rocked. Day 11 AND 12 I got 2 more shanks. Being a druid, I can only use 1, not to mention, I have no desire keep the two. If I was blizzard, I would've made the shanks tradable, or at least have added a line of code preventing duplicate drops. They could've added code that would swap in an item in place of what you would've looted. All in all, I gave it my best, but ended up with no mount, seeing my friends get both on multiple characters... :(
And on those that act like losing a roll on a raid mount doesn't suck... Look at it this way. If a mount drops in a 25man instance .3% of the time, and you need to roll against 24 other players, don't you think the drop rate should be higher? I understand, it is to keep mounts rare, but blizz, that goes a bit far.

Keep in mind now that badges effectively don't exist these chests will only reward JP. The 'chest is empty error' is a bit misleading because of this.

Got both Swift Brewfest Ram and Great Brewfest Kodo from the same keg,
this makes me believe the drops in the keg are rolled for separately.
Day after I got the Direbrew's Remote.

Sadly this wasnt on my main, which I have been farming the mounts on for 3 years with no luck whatsoever, not even the remote.

A few days later (also on an alt) I got double loot again: Direbrew's Bloodied Shanker and Tremendous Tankard O' Terror.

It is entirely possible (and highly likely) that you will get no actual loot items from the chest, although you get justice points when opening it. That is frustrating, at least for me.. so far, 3 days in a row = nothing but a few measly justice points.

OH My Goodness! I just got 3 drops in my Keg! The shanker and the mug (which were the 2 I wanted for that toon) AND the ram! I was shocked. This after a day or 2 of getting "no loot"!

EDIT: I finally got both mounts on my fifth year of doing the event. ~~Still do not have Horseman's Reins.~~ I do now. Also took five years (too long).

The developers of this game, and specifically those devs that design and update these events, need to revisit them. Obviously they are incredibly popular. While it is understood that players get gold and JPs from the boss loot plus gear upgrades, getting no loot in this chest is very disappointing. Instead of whining, let me make a few suggestions:

Preserved Brewfest Hops
Synthebrew Goggles (perhaps different than the normal ones)
Empty Barrel
Empty Brew Bottle
Any number of consumables
Any number of cooking recipes

etc. etc.

Getting vendor trash (at least) is better than nothing and event specific items are just fun. Add more of those. Keep the content both legacy and nostalgic... while also updated with fresh and new... and you will keep my subscription.

Update (as of 09/26/11): Guys guys guys! We did it! They added Brewfest Prize Tokens to this averaging around 15 per chest. Thank you for listening, WoW Devs! ^_^

I am disappointed by the lack of loot from the treasure chest. It doesn't seem to make a difference if you open the chest in the instance or after you have left. (It shouldn't.)

The first day I received an extra 24 JPs but the next three times there was no loot.

@ YoSeMiThE reading the past posts you used to be able to get this boss at lvl 78. If you're not getting it then Blizz has changed it to lvl 80+ without increasing the power of the boss.

During the midsummer festival, there is a Lord Ahune and the first successful kill of the day you get a bag that has the chance of getting a rare pet (Frigid Frostling). This year you could only get the dungeon if you were lvl 84 or 85, and the boss was tough to kill.

Just to say, there IS a chance to get multiple items per keg.

My rogue received the kodo and the tankard in the same keg.

Confirmed 2 other characters; received the tankard and the dagger, and then another got the dagger and a kodo.

Earlier today I received Brewfest Prize Token x12 from this bag. I think they have recently added this to the loot table or just hadn't dropped for me till now. Uploaded data via WoWHead addon.

As of today it seems to drop 10-15 Brewfest Prize Token. Before today you either got the mounts/remote/weps or nothing.

Update: I ticketed an issue with Ram Racing (I didn't get mounted when I 'completed' the quest) and the GM told me in reply that this was an issue that quite a few players had. She also told me that the tokens dropping from this keg were meant as a compensation for this. (Btw this bug happens when you move or perform other actions right after completing the quest that starts Ram Racing or can be caused by addons.)

The addition of the Brewfest Prize Token is a nice touch. It guarantees the keg will contain something, and it helps people collect the tokens, possibly to make up for the buggy nature of the Brew for Brewfest dailies; obviously it's only helpful for level 84's and 85's, but they're the only ones who could complete all the achievements in Brewfest anyway. Thanks to the extra tokens, it's time for some Disturbing the Peace.

Estimating the actual drop probabilities

Wowhead reports only on treasure chests that contain an item. In order to estimate drop probabilities accurately, we need a good estimate of the number of treasure chests that people actually opened. We will figure this out by guessing the number of treasure chests and then using basic probability to check our guess.

Our data:

4414 chests contained a remote
4274 chests contained a shanker
4282 chests contained a tankard
2330 chests contained a kodo
2192 chests contained a ram
23255 chests contained some tokens
35222 chests contained one or more of the above

Suppose that n chests were opened. Then the empirical probability that a chest contained a remote is 4414/n and so on. Let p1 = 4414/n, p2 = 4274/n, p3 = 4282/n, p4 = 2330/n, p5 = 2192/n. Let p = 1-(1-p1)(1-p2)(1-p3)(1-p4)(1-p5). Assuming that the empirical probabilities are equal to the theoretical probabilities, p is the probability that the chest contained at least one item other than a token. Then (n-23255)p = 35222-23255. I put the formulas in a spreadsheet, and found that n=89059 minimized |(n-23255)p-35222+23255|. This gives the following estimates:

P(remote) = 0.049562649
P(shanker) = 0.047990658
P(tankard) = 0.048080486
P(kodo) = 0.026162432
P(ram) = 0.024612897

I like round numbers, so I'll estimate that the remote, shanker, and tankard had 5% drop rates and the kodo and ram had 2.5% drop rates. Those estimates imply an approximately 18.5% chance to get at least one good item from your treasure chest, an approximately 1.5% chance to get at least two. There was also a 1/12,800,000 chance to get all 5. Screenshot, anyone?
