As stated by Blizzard: This will drop of northrend mobs and randomly teach one of the new glyphs introduced in 3.1. We can assume that it will work the same way the emotion food recipes and the heavy frostweave banadage manual work - only people who are of a certain inscription skill will see the item drop.

Actually, seeing as it's unbinding and rare, it's likely that it will be a world drop, kind of like the Jewelcrafting Designs that were added after release (except for a few specific ones).

Added around 50 new glyph recipes. These new recipes can be obtained from Books of Glyph Mastery found as world drops on Northrend monsters. Reading a Book of Glyph Mastery randomly discovers one of the newly-added recipes.

These aren't really something you can "farm" for, these are WORLD drops from Northrend, meaning all the mobs there have a chance to drop one, whether in an instance or outside of one. I have personally seen this drop twice so far, once while doing a group quest in Icecrown off the Jotunheim mobs, and once off some trash in a Heroic UP run.

If you really want more information about these, please download and use the Wowhead Client. The more people that do, the more information we can find here, and the more accurate it will be.

as of 3.1 live, this is now an uncommon quality item instead of rare, drop rate is ~ the same as a lock box(may replace lockboxes on loot tables on drop, unknown).

Seems to me the general pattern is that it can drop off the same mobs the the Heavy Frostweave Bandage recipie can drop off of. not confirmed but that seems to be the pattern so far.

I got one of these out of a Titanium Lockbox that dropped in Heroic Gun'Drak before the patch. Didn't get a rogue to open it until yesterday. I immediately advertised it in Trade chat and had 6 offers. Sold it for 1200G. The guy that bought it got Glyph of Explosive Shot. Hope I find more of these.

* These are random Northrend drops, including Northrend instances/raids and lockboxes. Though there appears to have a level requirement on the mob for them to drop since no one has reported them dropping from Howling Forjd or Borean Tundra yet. Possibly a level 75+ mob requirement , and may even have a higher drop rate in heroics and raids.
* They started off as having the drop rate of epics, but the drop rate as since been increased (blue post)
* They are Uncommon (green) quality, not Rare (blue) as it states on wowhead currently (EDIT: Looks like wowhead has updated this)
* They are BOE, can be traded/sold on the ah and will drop for non-scribes
* Can only be used by scribes with 425+ inscription level and the glyph they will learn is a random, from the ones added in patch 3.1
* Can be placed in Inscription bags.
* Unlike inscription research, there is no cooldown to these books- you can learn as many as you want per day.

The cost of these varies according to server, but I've seen them from sold from 1000g to 5000g on mine. The glyphs these teach are very attractive and the actual glyphs are going for 100g to 3000g on the AH. Prices will definitely drop as more scribes learn these recipes and start undercutting.
EDIT: They're selling for 500g-1000g on my server now, even though the patch has only been out for a day. Either the drop rate has been upped significantly (see point 2), or they weren't as rare as first thought.

The only real way to farm this is to pick a spot and kill everything in sight, rinse and repeat. I would suggest picking a type of mob that drops cloth or a type of meat that is worth farming on your server. This way you are doing something with the hours you'll spend killing.

I have been farming mobs in the Icecrown Glacier (packs of Converted Heroes and Scourge Banner-Bearers) for half a day or so. Picked up several stacks of cloth, loads of vendor fodder, runic health and mana potions, greens and one blue item, two jewelcrafting necklaces (damaged ones), and a single Book of Glyph Mastery.

Running as a feral and packed with a Traveler's Tundra Mammoth I find myself pulling 8-10 mobs almost all the time and making a decent amount of cash as I go along. Not quite sure if I am just horribly jinxed on the drops (experience tells me that I am) so thus far I would call this a good place to grind a pretty penny but pretty poor on books.

Personally, I would rather see these drop off dungeon bosses or the likes.

If I haven't completed discovering all of the glyphs through Inscription Research will this book have a chance to discover one of the pre 3.1 glyphs or does the book only discover the 3.1 glyphs? I'm trying to decide if I should hold onto the book, if I find one, until I've completed all the pre 3.1 discoveries

I can answer at that, my brother bought 4 books and never used Northrend Inscription Research, he got 2 new glyphs and 2 old glyphs(pre 3.1) so before using the books you might want to have all the old glyphs.

Farming a place for a day, and getting 2, then farming another place for 5 days and getting none doesn't mean previous place is the best place to get them.

It's green, means, every mob that drops a green quality item could have dropped this. No need to farm here and there, if you want to farm those, just kill everything you see.

Just speculation, but seeing as how mobs in instances seem to have a higher drop rate on uncommon quality items, the best chance of finding one of these might be to farm an easy northrend instance. The question is, whether to farm level 80, mid-level, or starting instances.

I have farmed for these in Ymirheim (Icecrown) simply because there are a lot of mobs there with fair respawn time and I had the entire place almost to myself. After two and a half hour of farming there and maybe 450-500 mobs killed, I got 3 of these books. I know its not any higher droprate from these mobs then any other mobs, but if you are going to farm for a world drop its a good place to do it.

PS: After more farming and some more books I would say the droprate is about 0.1-0.2%. Ofc this is just from my experience and its hard to tell since I might just have been really lucky.

Keep in mind, the price is artificially high right now as these have just been introduced. They are the ONLY way to learn the newly introduced glyphs, so every inscriber is after them. Because of their uncommon quality and specific nature , it will take a while for the price to truly stabilize on any server. That said, I would not expect the price of these to drop to 'average green' levels in the foreseeable, immediate future.

: As an example, on Moonguard the price of these has radically dropped already, but isn't 'low'. Upon release it wasn't uncommon to see people asking thousands (like 5000) gold PER. Now the price has stabilized to a certain point where the books are consistently on the AH for ~400g and you may be able to pick them up with in person sales/trades for anywhere from 250-600g depending on who you're talking to.

If your not an Inscriptor and you find one of these in your backpack, sell it on the AH for quite a bit of profit.
On my server the sell at a range of 2000g to 5000g.

I am an inscriptor and found one of these in the Storm Peaks. I decided that 2k gold was more valuable than learning a new glyph. The new glyph I could make would not be worth 2k gold. Even if I could sell enough of these glyphs to equal 2k gold, I wouldn't I want to invest the time trying to do so. The cost of these books is going to come down significantly in the weeks to come. People will catch on and they will not be a “must have now, at any cost!” item anymore. I can wait.

A mate of mine had it drop from a "Frostpaw Warrior" in Grizzly Hills while questing there.

Not to be merely another "LOL IT DROPPED IN ZONE X", the collected information here leads me to believe it might function the same as the Damaged Necklace, Jewelcrafting item, only dropping in zones other than Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord and Wintergrasp.

Doing guild run of Ulduar 10 man and one of these dropped from the trash mobs before Freya, there was a bit of comotion about what happensto it, either give it me as i'm the only scribe, or sell it on the AH, after a while i got it and used it and got a crappy mage one to do with Deep Freeze and i haven't sold a single one yet, so be carefull if your going to pay "x ammount" for this, just know the risk :)

Grats to blizz on the worst possible implementation of new glyphs. On my server a few individuals have successfully monopolized the 3.1 glyph market by buying out all the books and selling the glyphs for 200-500g each.

The book prices were going for 2-3k+ after the patch, they have dropped down quite a bit now, however this is just allowing the monopolists to acquire the rest of their recipes even faster. No one wants to buy the books, because either (A.) they will get a useless glyph recipe, or (B.) They will get a good recipe, but will never sell any because the gold farmers (AH bots?) sit at the AH the entire day and literally undercut your auction in a matter of seconds. I sat at the AH undercutting one of these people, and he would have me undercut AGAIN by the time I would refresh the listing. And I have not seen him offline once.... GG blizz. Way to feed it to the china farmers.

Just want to have a bit of a winge really:

Would it not be safe to assume that as these books are proffession specific, the only people who actually 'need' them are inscriptors? I have lost a number of these in groups as everybody rolls on them because of their percieved value. I have even been accused of being a ninja when I asked a group if I could need on one! Surely, in any group, an inscriptor should get first refusal of the item? Needing an item just because it is valuable is totally unfair - how #$%^ed off would say a Pala be if I needed on his epic plate drop because I can DE it and sell the abyss crystall for 100g on the AH? Or any piece of epic armour/weaponry for that matter. The item is for inscriptors only and as such should only be needed on by inscriptors. Why should we have to pay someone 400g for a book in the vain hope that the glyph we get will be rare enough to make some money on the AH, when we are the only people who should have them in the first place?

With any luck the market will soon drop out when everyone starts undercutting eachother on the AH and realises that the book isnt worth buying at 400g odd.

If you need gold THAT bad go and grind some quests or farm Stratholme for a couple of hours like the rest of us! Stop ninjaing OUR items!

You can get this off of any mob in Northrend and the Culling of Stratholme. Sells for one or two hundred gold depending on your server and competition.

Hey guy's, i've just read the comments above and it seems that 1. the book sells for quite alot, i think i heard a 4200g price up in the comments 2. It's got a 0.01 or less drop rate 3. you can't farm it.

Well then this is the weird part, i started playing my warrior again and decided to go prot, iwas tanking H UP and one of the books dropped and i thought nothing of it and i wun the roll while the group /cry Q_Q, i haven't sold it yet but i will, but then something even more weird happened, while doing a daily in IceCrown ANOTHER book dropped =) if you don't beleive me then make a horde toon on barthlias pst vodkawhiskey i'll come to you and trade with you that's if i haven't sold them yet.

Btw i know prices are different on every server but how much would it normally sell for and if you don't know would it atleast be over 1k or above 2k and under 3k etc =)

Hmm i recently made a rogue and took inscription. I never had grasped how many books you actually need to learn all the glyphs (or to learn at least the 5 best-selling ones from those 50). i've had crazy luck on drops until now , i got 5 the same day while questing in icecrown on my priest (funny thing is i was questing for money). Got one from an elite (think it was Pustulent Colossus , had to kill 5 for a q - i do not say u can farm them i just happen to remember the mob who dropped it) and in the next 5mins (god bless epic flyer) i got one off a cultist just outside Icecrown Citadel (court of bones i think).

In the next couple of hours i managed to get another 3 off totally random mobs (yes yes i do know what a world drop is). I've also seen quite a few drop in raids / heroics , but none of the drop in a 78> zone , from a not-80 mob (might be possible tho). As for the price it seems it's going for 150-170g in the AH in my server with at least 30 in there at any given time & about 110-120g on trade from ppl who want to make fast sells or sympathize the poor scribe who has to pay that x 50 (although it's not hard to make money as one , my level 13 rogue with a skill of 105 had made about 120g from the glyphs i made to lvl -.- , just like jc - expensive patterns yet the gems from them go for 60-80g in my server , so i don't really know why they're whining - good investment?).

Below are questions, not answers. But if you provide the correct answers, this post and thus yours will be come valuable.

Talking about having all mats, and all Book of Glyph Mastery needed at hand. If I have understood correct, I dont need to do the 2 daily researches for XX days, if I have enough books, to learn all glyphs in 1 day?

If I do 1 of each research, then the rest with Book of Glyph Mastery, will Book of Glyph Mastery only/most likely proc only the "56 new" glyphs? Or will the book stop giving glyphs after "the 56 new ones" have been learned, and one has to do the 2 researches every day to learn all?

How many glyphs can one learn at the trainer? (Glyphs from trainer (T) ) + (Researched ones (R) ) + ( The "new 56" from Book of Glyph Mastery (N) )

or

(T) + (R) +( N) = how many?

Book of Glyph Mastery are at 7-40g on my server, ca 10g is most common so this is a profession I am concidering for an alt. Glyphs sell so good that the costs of Book of Glyph Mastery, inks used for this possible power lvling will be earned back within weeks.

As a scribe, I always need these items.

"Need" means that you really need the item to better your toon.

Although acquiring gold can be argued to improve your toon, there are hundred of other ways to do that. It should not qualify as a "Need" event. Rolling on something to make a profit defines "Greed" which is what people who are not Scribes should do.

When ever I win one on a Need roll, I use it there on the spot. So all will see that I have learned a new Glyph.

Just like BOE items in raids; most raid leaders insist that you equip it.

Same principal applies.

Most experienced players in small groups subscribe to a very simple rule to determine need rolls. A need roll is justified if, and only if, you will use, consume or equip the item immediately upon winning it. Anything else is greed. If you roll need and don't immediately use, consume or equip the item, you just ninja'd it.

Just learned it on the PTR via a Book. It's a level 81 Warrior glyph, so it won't sell well since nobody can use it, but I imagine it will be useful at 85.

If you are attempting to farm this outside of an instance, WoWhead currently lists the following drops rates for two different zones. Icecrown and The Storm Peaks.

Saronite Shaper 1.8%
Pustulent Colossus 1.4%
Stormcrest Eagle 0.8%
Baelok from The Rider of Blood quest. 0.7%
FrostBrood Matriarch 0.3%

I spent exactly one hour killing the Saronite Shaper which appears to be on a 2 minute spawn timer for a total of 30 kills. I had better luck farming the Enchanting recipes with a lower drop rate in Icecrown than I did here. If you need these, DO NOT go trying to farm them as you will not be happy with time involved vs the auction house method.

My efforts weren't totally in vain though, I did walk away with:

Gold Drop: 18 Gold 43 Silver 19 Copper
Vendor Trash Sell: 43 Gold 64 Silver 0 Copper
Frostweave Cloth X 26: 3 Gold 25 Silver 0 Copper (using vendor price as AH price fluctuates by server.
Repair Costs: 7 Gold 57 Silver 53 Copper (on a level 80 Mage)

A net profit of 57 Gold 74 Silver 66 Copper. Not a very good profit when you can be doing Argent Tournament dailies making more gold in the same amount of time if not less, plus getting all the miscellaneous vendor trash from mobs along the way.

Short Version: Don't farm these, just buy them off the auction house, you will save time, money, and many long boring hours.

This book is still required for new scribes who have not obtained the 55 glyphs it teaches. There is no other way to get those glyphs. ~~This item will also drop in Cataclysm content, so people don't have to farm old Wrath content.~~ After playing with Cataclysm a little bit, these books are no longer Cataclysm world drops. (they were in beta)

Good luck finishing up your grind. So far I have seen them for around 500g each on my server due to the rarity, but occasionally someone will list one a lot lower finding one while leveling through Northrend and wanting to sell it fast. Keep an eye out, and farm lots of gold. I still need around 20 books to finish my scribe's glyphs.

To sum up my droprate experiences on this item: LOW.

Seen maybe 1-2 a week of clearing ICC 10/25(one could once do both versions), seen 1 drop from a random mob the entire WoLK/Northrend. And yes, I have played alot :)

In the start when I lvl'd Inscription, the drop was no better.

With Cata release, I have not seen 1 drop, not in Cata content and not in WoLK/Northrend(not been much in Northrend, but still).

So how are new players going to lvl Inscription and get these 56-60 glyphs from the books?

Enless farming on lowdroprates in Northrend, or off AH.

For each expansion old items become more rare, mainly(only?) due to players are no longer in those areas. So, this item will, and might even now be, a goldmine. That is if you have a stash of them.

Those who have stacks of these in GB's, don't sell them for less than 300-1000gold each atm is my advice.

Even if Inscription is a semi-pointless profession for a main(well, can a licence to print gold be poitnless?) someone will want to choose this profession, maybe on an alt and will want these books to get 100% complete.

You know, completionists :)

"All" this profession gives is a nifty shoulder enchant(and tons of gold), but you are better off going Engineering/Enchanting for max DPS, as engineering 'chants stack with other enchants.

Blizzard will have to at some point either decide this is no longer a profession for players and it becomes a rep thing/vendor thing where you can buy your glyphs(= best goldsink in game) or all 56-60 glyphs learned from the books can be learned in a different, more easy way?

So, if you are selling, don't wait too long to cash in on them, and if you plan on getting Inscriprion as a profession, 100g and under for these books are atm a steal, as selling glyphs for upto 250g each is a daily occurrence.

Short Version: Don't farm these, just buy them off the auction house, you will save time, money, and many long boring hours.

Would if I could. I check every day, but haven't seen one for sale for a couple weeks now.

Unsurprising, since people just level through Northrend on their way to Cataclysm content now. I leveled six characters 68-80 and only saw two drops of this item doing it. With no one hanging out in Northrend anymore, just leveling through to Cata stuff, until these start dropping from Cata content, or dropping much more frequently in Northrend, it's just not possible to learn most of these glyphs now. If you didn't get your scribe leveled up and all the recipes before Cata, you're just screwed now. No way to do it anymore. Buying every book you can on the AH, if it doesn't bankrupt you (and it won't, given that even if they're selling for 400g, that's only about 400g every couple weeks you'll be spending, as they don't get posted more often than that), it'll still be well into whatever the next expansion after Cataclysm is before you learn all the glyphs (and if there's any particular one you're wanting to learn, it will, of course, be one of the very last the RNG gives you).

Im in the same boat wondering how to learn these WOTLK glyphs from the books. my scribe was my 2nd level 80 in wrath, and even though i spent a year playing in wrath, i still only managed to get maybe 30/54 books to learn the recipes.. So now that leaves me 24 glyphs or so, that i cannot make ever ... will never be able to learn them.. ever.. . because no one does anything in northrend anymore besides alts power levelling to get to 78 to do cata stuff.

I think glyph mastery books should be for sale.. charge a quantity of rare northrend ink (snowfall ink) for one book.....That way we scribes can still learn the recipes. We could just go farm some northrend herbs for a little while, make/trade snowfall ink and get the glyph books.

These drop quite often from treasure chests located in high level Northrend zones such as Icecrown, Storm Peaks and Sholazar Basin. I usually check all the spawn locations marked by GatherMate2 addon daily and usually get 1-3 per run.
Hope this helps anyone trying to farm these.

Seems to have a ~1% droprate from Converted Heroes in Icecrown, I've been farming them for cloth for some time and gotten 12 books from about 1300 kills.

Not much, but probably the best spot if you want/need to farm these.

They drop in Northrend dungeons now and again. Both heroic and regular. Put it on AH for 125. (I'm sometimes kind that way...lol) Sold like lightning.

The other two sellers were asking for a thou apiece. Have no idea of the average price though.

The books will just speed up the process, instead of providing exclusive glyphs.

I usually do 1-2 treasure runs a day and find maybe 5-7 treasure chests in one day. The zones I go thru are Sholazar Basin, Icecrown, Crystal Song and Stormpeaks. From my own experience, I'd say its about 1 in 7-8 I would get a Book of Glyph Mastery. Some days I get two books. Some days I get none. To fly thru each zone it probably takes 10 minutes per zone.

To make this easier on myself, I've downloaded Gathermate2 mod and imported Gathermate2_data. However, Gathermate does not have Maplewood Treasure Chest in their data info. They only have Sturdy Treasure Chest. Sholazor Basin and Crystal Song only have Sturdy treasure chests the route is straight forward by looking at the map. Icecrown has 4 Sturdy Treasure chest listed in Icecrown, but it is mostly Maplewood Treasure Chests, you can use wowhead and search maplewood treasure chest to help you locate those and to design a route you can use. Stormpeaks is mostly Sturdy but there are a few Maplewoods.

Cant need on these anymore if your trying to grab it for an alt... 4.2 patch made all BoE items soulbound if needed on in a Need Before Greed situation (all dungeon finder groups).

Also, The main Inscription page Inscription states "Currently, scribes learn specific recipes through Northrend Inscription Research, Minor Inscription Research, and Book of Glyph Mastery from Northrend; this will be revamped in 4.2." ... Has anyone noticed this revamp yet? And if so, What is it?
---Answered my own question by reading above...DUH....Although it seems, it's not quite confirmed or implemented in game, that glyphs from Book of Glyph Mastery can be learned from Northern Inscription Research.....Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Best place to try and farm these is CoT: Strat. The gauntlet on the backside respawns elites that drop them. Just don't talk to Arthas and you can farm them all day w/o having to reset the instance.

I just spoke to GameMaster Aslyetaii on a separate issue. Bringing up some recent topics on this thread, (s)he has told me that learning the glyphs from the Book of Glyph Mastery is still the only way to learn them. He said it was supposed to make it to the game where they can also be learned through the Northrend Inscription Research, but never made it live. He only said that it was, "undone," with out any true explaination. He had thoughts as to why, but nothing positive or verified.

I had asked about them dropping only in Northrend, and he replied saying he was walking a fine line and could not comment specifically on that. Only that the drop locations have not changed.

He could not give any information as to when or how any future changes will be made to this.

I remember End-Game WOTLK this were in the AH for 30g a pop and I could get 2 per dungeon on my scribe. Glad I was smart enough to do it then because, now the darned things are like 500g. Lalalalala that sucks.

Is it just me being unlucky? or is it less likely the books drop when u dont have inscription on the char u are farming with.
I did 14x utgarde pinnacle :0 books but got blue proto drake instead.. not bad.
And i have spend several hours in the culling of stratholme and again 0 books.

Prices for the books are around 500g on nordrassil aswell.
that would be 27K to learn them all. The "rare" (thanks to blizzard) glyphs are around 200g... wich means i could buy 135 glyphs for the same gold....
If nothing is going to change, i recon the rare glyphs will be around 1K by the end of this year, making it impossible for new players to even think of buying glyphs at lvl 25. (wich allready is the case)

I'm curious...I saw that it says above, that these books can be obtained from lockboxes. I have a scribe that I'm wanting to "farm" these for, but on my rogue. Can I pickpocket humanoids and get them via those boxes? I haven't gone around pickpocketing a lot lately, I may try it out. I was just curious if anyone else has tried this.

Just had one of these drop in Icecrown, only other on AH selling for 1000 gold. Seems somewhat unfair for poor scribes having to pay such outrageous prices for new glyphs.

Mind you this is the first one I've ever seen drop and I've taken down hundreds of mobs in the area.

Edit: 12/5/11 - As I was coming back to view this post, it made me think about other professions, namely EC and BS, since those are my mains two maxed out professions. There is rarely a day that goes by, when there is not a world drop plan or enchant available; however, the cost of these are anywhere between 7k-25k a very substantial amount of money.

This cost makes the common 1000 gold per book much, much cheaper, but yet the rareity of these items are much higher. Is this due to the random nature of the possible Glyph that may be learned? Or is it due to the low number of scribes compared to other professions, thus lowering the demand and so the price?

I'd be interested to hear from any scribes reading this to help answer this question.

This is an outright lie, he is either misinformed or trolling. I tried both researches minor and northrend research over the past 5 days and got nothing. I have every glyph except for the ones from the Book of Glyph Mastery. You still need the Book of Glyph Mastery to learn all of the glyphs that are only available from them, there is no other way to learn them even in 4.3.

This statement was made on 5/16/2011 almost 5 months ago, along with a lot more answers that apply to many things that still have yet to be implemented if they ever do. It was simply a set of answers to shut people up and let people know what blizzard is planning, there is no set patch as to when this will be implemented so keep an eye on the patch notes.

I cannot imagine that people do not want the truth but yet this post continually gets down-voted as of now it is impossible to learn the glyphs that are learned by the use of Book of Glyph Mastery by any other means. I have been a maxed scribe since its inception and I am still missing some of the glyphs because the drop rate on the Book of Glyph Mastery is just to low.
As of 4.3 some of the things that were listed in the http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2522165843 were added; however the part about Northrend Research giving the glyphs that are learned by the books is not one of the things that was added... and the wait continues.
As of 4.3.3 still no change.
I have learned all of them since 5.0.4 hit from research these books simply speed the process along now.

There has been quite a bit of honest and reasonable feedback. I appreciate all of you for sharing and for being patient while I worked to follow-up with the developers for more information.

Back in May of 2010, we began tossing around ideas about how to improve Inscription. But at that time, Mists of Pandaria was still in the early stages of character talent development. As that was hashed out, it directly affected how we were then able to approach potential Inscription and glyph changes. As a matter of fact, at one point during the discussions, glyphs were going to be removed altogether. That then evolved into the idea of Prime glyphs being removed, Major glyphs being adjusted such that their added bonuses did not affect talents, and Minor glyphs being revamped so they felt more interesting.

Have no fear, I have been assured that Inscription and glyph discovery are being actively discussed in preparation for upcoming changes with Mists of Pandaria. This comes with one albeit relieving caveat: Glyphs that are now learned solely through the Book of Glyph Mastery are planned to be available through the Northrend and Minor research dailies.

I found two while farming Frostweave Cloth close of Aldur'Thar in Icecrown. One I found while farming the cultist in the little place. The second one, while farming the cultist I found a chest, and opened it and inside was Book of Glyph Mastery, so yes just doing your stuff and doing what you basically do in Northrend, you can find some. Don't farm for them for long, because you'll probably find them when you'r not expecting it :) Good luck =D

As of 5/6/2012 the Northrend Inscription Research does allow you to learn new glyphs. I just leared a new one and I was prev maxed on the glyphs learned from doing the research.

I've started farming the chests in all the zones in northrend about 2 weeks ago so I figured I'd put up what I found out (low pop server).

There are 4 chests possibly up per zone (besides landing + forest, they each can have 1 up)
Fleshwork 3 possible spawns are affected by phasing (my mage did all icecrown and can't see them).
Another phasing spot is Scourgeholme. If you don't do the quests for Scourgeholme you won't be able to see the 3 spawns there.
Respawn for 2 chests seems to be ~8 hours total, don't know exactly how long to get all 4 up. On my first run (morning) I get 3-4 per zone, and then 2 on the second run after 8 hours. I don't do a second run so with at most 16 hours most will be up.
I've gotten the landing chest over a large amount of time while doing tournament dailies. While farming over the past few weeks I would NEVER see them after 8 hours, but I did see one after 11 hours, and then didn't see one about 12 hours after that. So I'd suggest it's about a 12 hour respawn.
There is also a maplewood chest missing on hrothgar's landing's map. It is on the ship where you do Ornalf the Scarred at 59.2, 31.6.
Server restart/maintenance restarts any down (wouldn't know about up since I tend to get em if they're up, though I'd suggest they despawn) chests including their timers themselves.
The two chest points west of the tournament grounds in icecrown (Deathspeaker's Watch) count as the landing chests, so check there if you haven't gotten the 1 landing chest.

Short answer to the question, "How do I farm these things easily?"

You don't.

I looped through the chests in Northrend today and out of 12 chests found, none of them contained glyph books. I have yet to try mass-farming enemies, but given that it's a random drop, it's not really "farming". I'm glad Blizz has said they are going to revamp this in MoP; as it stands, the only "reliable" way to find these is to buy them off the AH whenever you see them.

I've been farming this out of Pit of Saron, the icc lvl 80 dungeon. With my Blood DK I can clear this instance in about 12-15 minutes in normal mode. I've been getting 1 of these books every 4 runs, in a couple hours I had 4 already, they drop of any mob in the place, so make sure you kill everything. So, if there's a way to "farm" these things, that dungeon is your best choice.

someone down the list said Icecrown is bad for farming this book and listed the "best options". the thing is, although the options listed do have high drop rate, they are quite rare mobs (the worms of storm peaks, the rune weavers of grizzly hills, etc), so unpractical to farm. the Convcerted Heroes of Icecrown have a lower drop rate, but they fill an enourmous area in packs of up to 8 mobs, easy to kill at 85, with fast respawn and they also drop a lot of greens and cloth. farm them with a tailor/enchanter, and each time you fill your bags compact the stuff disenchanting and making bolts of cloth, and continue farming. by the time you cant compact any more stuff and go back to a city, you'll have a ton of materials to sell and (likely) a Book of Glyph Mastery or 2.

This drops a lot more frequently after the patch. I have also seen it for way cheaper on my server (Ravencrest). I have been seeing it lately priced from 500g to 1000g. I actually sold one for 450g last night. Check out Wowhead. I actually got this off of Foreman Swindlegrin in Sholazar Basin.

Ok I feel for all the people that have said that this book goes for over 400g+

On Darkspear the I have picked up four of them, all for under 30g ea. So for 120g(-) I have bought 4 books.

I do agree though they sell no where near what they should. The cost of the paper alone(50s(-) a sheet for the high end glyphs) is more than what you can get at times on the AH. The Mats you use could fetch you more on the AH than the actual Glyph. But being 440/450 I will continue and complete this Prof.

No idea why people think that Inscription is a sinkhole. I have made more money off Inscription than any other craft (40k in 2 months after WotLK, working about 1 - 2 hours a day).

Granted, I am not very happy about the books, because it gave all the scribes all of the glyphs too fast. All the money was made in Inscription when research first opened up, and the scribes who researched every single day made tons of money for their effort.

I've heard from some folks that they got one in an instance, and some from mobs, thus the nature of a true world drop, you can't really farm, you can just hope you get really lucky. Patch notes saying monsters means everything, just a really low drop rate. /go world drops /whimper

This is why Inscription is a sinkhole; those that do get this drop are not scribes and sell for outrageous prices in AH. Then they want the glyphs for cheap money in AH. Inscription is not profitable and just causes us to loose more gold just to keep up. They really need to add a daily for Inscription instead of this world drop book. The cheapest Book of Glyph Mastery I have seen on the Nazgrel server is 2000 gold yet glyphs are selling very cheap!

Does anybody know if these books make the same glyphs as northrend research does? Personally I won't pay more than 40g for one of these on the AH on Stormscale but I won't ever buy another one if the glyphs are pulled from the same pool as "Northrend Inscription Research"

I have been able to purchase 2 of these on Drenden, and only seen one other person with new glyphs in the AH. First glyph was Guardian Spirit and second was Circle or Demonic Power, one of the not so good ones.

i believe these give different glyphs than the research does - today i seem to have reached the end of what my northrend research will let me learn, as i didn't get a new recipe off doing it today - afterwards i bought several books and learned:

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, as a lvl 77 Hpriest inscriptioninst, I found 2 of these in one day, one droped from HoL and the other from DTK. unfortunately my inscription is only at 401, but in not too long i will be able to use them =) saved my self about 1-3k by the sounds of things....maybe I'm just lucky ;-)

You can't learn the book glyphs with research, and you can't research the glyphs learned from the book.
So, you need exactly 56 books, not more nor less.
I wrote an aura to track how many books I still need. Saves gold buying books you don't need.
