Well, not every tank follows the "I stack stamina till I get stupid"-path.
Saying this, defense rating is the best avoidance stat for prot pals and warriors and guess what, the gem providing it is yellow !

"Best" may not mean the same thing to every tank, however. That's primarily why the gemming system exists, imo. As a feral tank progressing through Ulduar-25, yes: stamina is what I'm looking for most, given the hard-hitters in there. But I expect that as my gear improves, more gem slots will open up where I don't necessarily need another stam gem to be effective in raid, and those slots could be just as well spent on more mitigation or threat. For example, I could see putting a +8 agi / +8 hit gem in here if it got me over the hit cap (provided my other stats were in good shape as well). Also, keep in mind gems are not "set in stone" as it were. Rare and perfect uncommon gems are getting more and more affordable, and there's no reason why you couldn't re-gem a few slots for this encounter or that encounter.

Got this yesterday and can safely say, its an incredible ring. Put an 8 Def/12 Stam gem in it and away we go. Definately worth the 6 hours of wiping to get it! Best in slot by far.

In general, you want to gear and gem to survive a worst possible scenario boss battle, where you fail to dodge/parry/block every single hit made against you. Regardless of the details, this ring is bloody damn amazing.

lol... I've seen alot tanks stacking Stam and all fall in no time because they are squeezy since they lack of thier avoidance. so saying stack stam is best is a joke but balance avoidance and stam is a nice combo though

The reason why most tanks gem Stam is because they get their avoidance/mitigation via their gear. There really is no point for gemming straight 16 Dodge/Parry (lol) if you're getting it in sufficient proportions via your gear.

No Nyctric, the reason most tanks gem for stamina is because they think their HP reflects the size of their @#$%^. Not that stamina is wrong for ulduar..

Ah I see, Yeah thats true most tanks do it mainly because they see other tanks do it and think its best, even though they have no clue why. Thankfully i'm one of those clever tanks :).

Stamina is better for several reasons.

The first would be the fact that healers can never rely on avoidance unless it is straight mitigation such as armor. Unless you reach avoidance cap you are bound to have your avoidance fail once in a while. The bosses in Ulduar hit so hard that even though you might have a couple percent extra avoidance, which will indeed lower the total damage taken if you survive, healers will stand there wondering what happened with your hp when avoidance does fail. The steady damage on a tank with lower avoidance and higher hp however would be steady and can not fail you, ever.

The twohit factor is something that I would say characterize Ulduar tanking. Maybe not on normal modes but when you get to hardmodes it is a whole different story. You often have those moments where you later check your log to see that your tank was missing about 500-1000 hp to survive one more hit (which gives your healers about a second to recover from the spike damage). Some examples are Hodir's Frozen Blows, Steelbreaker's Fusion Punch), Mimiron's Plasma Blast, Thorim's Unbalancing Strike et cetera. Now the problem is not those abilities, the problem is when the bosses decide to use their normal hits at the exact same second (or in between two hits). There is no way for a healer to heal up the damage unless the tank actually survives both and can be healed up before the next hit.

Blizzard did not make the bosses hit quicker than they did in Pre-Ulduar instances, they made them hit harder. And as someone said, unless they make the bosses hit quick and for less each hit, stamina will remain the way to go as a tank.
