This is not 100% drop rate. I had to kill over 70 Nascent Val'kyr before I got mine.

Worth mentioning, since 3.0.8, these are no longer 100% drop rate. It's a guesstimate, but the rate is now probably in line with the other BoP recipes we used to see in TBC.

This is definately no longer a 100% drop

The drop rates on this listed on wowhead are skewed by non-jc kills - they will never see the drop.

Ofc even more skewing is introduced by kills after the design has dropped/been learnt, which will never contain the drop even for a JC.

This means the number on wowhead will never be an accurate representation of the drop chance when farming it - because all kills after the design has dropped will artificially lower the drop rate. This probably explains why the drop rate looks so much lower on some mobs than others - they just get killed more often. You can see this if you look at the number of kills the drop rates are based off.

Presumably, despite the numbers above, the drop rate is actually equal on all the relevant mobs.

My guess based on purely anecdotal evidence (my own farming numbers) is a 1% drop on all of them.

With armor pen getting an across the board buff in 3.1, and for warriors even more so, and for mace spec warriors even MORE so, I decided to farm this. 87 kills and finally dropped for me. Nascent Val'kyr is a little annoying for melee classes; like most airborne mobs they drift around behind you or stop short to cast. Overall though, much easier to farm this recipe then say Savory Deviate Delight and hopefully will make me some gold when 3.1 comes out and ArP becomes useful......

Edit: PS - keep the dust they drop for 2 reasons- 1) helps you keep track of how many Val'kyr you killed, and 2) sells for about 14g per stack to vendor

For melee classes, I recommend getting on your flying mount to aggro a few. It is easier and quicker than using shoot/throw.

I killed 50 and came back to check what the drop rate was, feeling pretty discouraged. Since it's 0.5% for everyone, and I sincerely doubt that half of all toons who kill these valkyr are jewelcrafters, it's definitely over 1% drop rate. And probably closer to 2% or more. If you're interested in what I think the real drop-rate is and how I came to that conclusion, read on:

According to this website, http://www.lsmason.com/blog/2007/05/15/profession-and-skill-popularity/, as of May 2007 (very out of date, yes, but still interesting), Jewelcrafting was the least popular profession with 8.8% of the population being Jewelcrafters. Mining and herbalism were the two most popular professions possessed by an astounding 36.3% and 29.9% of the population. I doubt the distribution has gotten more skewed in either direction than this with the addition of more professions and better balancing between them. In fact, I bet it has normalized somewhat and the highest percentages have dropped closer to 100% divided by the number of professions (3 gathering professions plus 8 production professions) all times 2 because you can have 2 primary professions, or ~18.2%. If ~18.2% of the Nascent Vrykul killing population was JCs, this design would have a true drop rate of 2.74%. Furthermore, characters at or near the maximum level will possess more crafting skills than those at the very beginning. Also, Jewelcrafting is often considered one of the best professions, so I would surmise that this number has not only gone up but is higher for those at or near 80, but it is doubtful to have reached as much as the peak of the popularity of gathering professions of old. So it could be greater than 8.8% but I sincerely doubt as much as 30%. In the case of 10% of the population who kill Nascent Valkyrs, the true drop rate for Jewelcrafters (hereafter, JCs) would be 5%. If this sample of the population were as much as 25% JCs the true drop rate for JCs would be 2%. I don't think it's that high, like I said it'd probably be closer to ~18.2%, so between 10% and ~18.2% of the population being JC or 2.74%-5% and given some rough probability calculations based on what people have said here, I think 3% is very close.

So, after killing 50 vrykuls, I came back discouraged and killed some more. 3 vykul later and I am the proud new owner of Design: Fractured Scarlet Ruby. Thank you.

Well, it took me 145 kills to get this thing to drop. As much as I hate farming, I actually found the grind to be worth it in the end. Not only did I get a shiney new JC design, the Dissolved Soul Essences these lovely ladies drop (at a 100% rate) stack up to 20 times. One stack = 15g sell if I recall correctly, give or take. I ended up with over 100g after killing them all just from the junk, plus the other random greens and other assorted nonsense. All in all, a little less than 200g. Happy farming!

Took about 1.5 hours of farming. I was the only JC farming, and killed about 120 of them before it dropped.
Made ~100g selling just the grey trash drops.
-20 relic of ulduar
-3 green armor/weapon drops
-50 Frostweave cloth

Not the most helpful post, but putting in a warning to others farming - don't expect quick result.
2 days and counting so far. Over 300g made from the Dissolved Soul Essence alone but no pattern yet.

I killed about 650 of them and that freaking design didn't drop. Even with extreme bad luck it shouldn't take THAT long. Just to be sure, I checked my JWC and ... what a surprise ... I've already learned that pattern! :) It must have dropped while I was questing in that area, I learned it and totally forgot about it :-D

Lesson to learn: Check your jewelcrafting, you may have already learned it while doing quests there.

Checked my JC 'spellbook' only thing in there close to it is Fractured Bloodstone. i'm 431 JC but I only need 390 to learn it so it should drop.

Took me about 250 kills to get. I got a ton of the soul essences, banking a couple hundred gold with them, lots of grey armour/weapons, getting around 30g with them, 2 greens which were vendored for a couple gold each and the epic trinket (o_O) which is currently sitting in my Trinket #2 slot :)

The drop rates on these seem to be about 4% now, here are my results for the four BoP patterns which are zone drops:

Defender's Twilight Opal
No drop count, got this first while doing JC daily

Accurate Monarch Topaz
21 kills, easiest to farm since I went for Stoic Mammoths which have a short respawn time and I could just AOE down a pack of them.

Fractured Scarlet Ruby
23 kills, only one choice of mob for obtaining this recipe.

Radiant Forest Emerald
27 kills, both types of mobs, just rode down the valley killing every harpy I saw.

Dropped mine on kill #131.

Just keep at it in the area, it will come.

As a small tip, fly through the 4 together out the front of the bigger building for fast kills (melee/tanks only i'd think tho).

I actually got mine within a few kills, so the drop rate isnt as low as it would seem. I didnt kill more than 10 mobs of each before the pattern dropped for me.

Edit: The mammoths took me about 70ish kills to get the pattern to drop.

Damn I must have been lucky, I killed 10 of them and got it lol. Me and my druid buddy went out there expecting to be out there for an hour or 2, I was really happy to see it in the 3rd pack we pulled.

If you want this design but don't got a flying mount you can get to Valkyrion (the village in which you can find the Nascent Val'kyrs) by going to 81.66 in Icecrown and walk up to the ledge (see this picture, it can be a bit tricky) and then follow the path up to south. At 83.68 you gonna have to make a little jump down. Only a few yard forward you gonna have to jump again and this time it is really important that you run close to the mountain wall, otherwise you will fall down. Now follow the path to north and when it ends turn right and jump down. After the jump you just have to turn left and follow the path up to Rohmedal Pass and from there I think you can find your way to Valkyrion by yourself.

I got the design with my level 74 warlock earlier today after killing about 40-50 Nascent Val'kyrs.

P.S. I actually don't know if this is against Blizzard's rules (I have really hard to belive so though) but you do this at your own risk.

After doing some research on droprate, i started farming this design. My killcount is 300 atm, and still no sign of the design... I doublechecked the name of the mobs i was killing and the droprate % taking Insolent1's math in consideration (also doublechecked that, it checks out). Has anybody heard of recent changes to this design?

Umm this took only about 10 minutes while i was talking in vent to find this. Killed maybe about 30, just flew grabbed a couple, and finally i grabbed a pack of 7 and a few of those other chicks on the ground and Walah! Glad I didn't have to buy it or something. :)

I was told by my former GM I needed Armor Penetration (I laughed because I knew it was getting nerfed with 3.2.2) So being a JC i figured I would go and try and farm this. I arrived at the scene and killed for about 5 minutes (rogue and looked at poison timers). I got the drop after my 12th kill. I turned around and sold the grey trash for 16g!
So I go back here now with my DK and farm the trash loot, get greens, blues (chestplate), and relics. I am making over 200g an hour here with my 80 DK.

I farmed 60 val'kyr before this dropped. It took me about 15 minutes.

Previous comments post the following kill counts:
1/45, 1/300, 1/64 ,1/48, 1/90, 1/4, 1/208, 1/60

Napkin math says about 1/102 on average. Not counting the outliers, I think ~1/60 is more accurate. Don't expect to spend all day on this.

I found this off Nascent Val'Kyr, I hear its a low drop rate but i got mine after 10min of w8ing for a VoA10 group to fill. All i did was fly around aggroing a few of them and aoeing them down. Pick up the grays and sell them.

Took me 173 kills to get mine. I have to admit, I was starting to get really frustrated trying to get this. But, it'll more than make up for it by selling gems and getting my Rogue and Druid some cuts.
For a Ret Pally, obviously, the mobs werent very hard to kill. I would flying mount and fly around, agro'ing multiple ones flying about, and AoE down. If you go around Valkyrion in a clockwise motion, by the time you get back to where you started, the mobs should have respawned. Quick respawn rate, but seems to be a terrible drop rate.

Ok this is kinda crazy i started farming about 6pm server time and about three kills in i get this epic that ive never heard of called tears of bitter anguish i was like cool i can go sell that after i get done farming for this stupid design, anyway 2 hours later im still farming and i get another one! im like "what are the odds of that?", turns out these mobs are the only mobs to drop tears of bitter anguish, so good luck farming this design you might just get a nice surprise while you do!

Has anyone tried farming this since 4.0.1? I know it use to be the Armor Pen cut so I'm not sure if the new version of the gem would still drop..I've been farming maybe 200+ kills so far and still nothing. If anyone can confirm this dropping since the patch, I would appreciate it.

~210 Kills thus far over the space of a few days (got bored after ~40 yesterday and ~40 the day before, but i'm determined today, and am at 130 straight kills today alone) and still no drop. What's up with the drop-rate of this thing? All the other designs dropped after less than 20 kills (took me 1 for the mammoth design)...

EDIT: Updated kills - 260 (~340 total) today and still no drop.

Went and farmed this today and it took me 182 kills,respawns are pretty fast and its very easy on a ret pally using sense undead and taunt to pull them down
