With the announcement of the Cataclysm expansion at Blizzcon 2009, they also explained how they were going to streamline stats for all caster classes.

Spellpower and mana per 5 stats will no longer appear on gear (and will be retroactively removed from existing gear). All spellpower will come passively from Intellect (the same way warriors get 2 attack power from a point of strength, for example). Also, all healing classes will recieve a meditation-equivalent talent, so Spirit will become a healer-only mana regen stat, regardless of class (Shamans and Paladins included).

So essentially, this gem (and it's future iterations, 12 int/12 spirit for the next level of gems in Cataclysm most likely) will be the primary healer gem.

This is if they do not re-work existing spellpower gems. They could potentially make intellect a red-gem stat in the future due to these changes. We shall see.

Unless you can get it very cheap, this gem is pretty useless. A Nightmare Tear gives you the same int/spirit but also gives you 10 stamina while matching all sockets.
