This drops off Thadius, the final boss in the construct quarter of Naxxramas. As stated above, it is essential wear for Protection Warriors and Paladins, ~~possibly Druids also~~. EDIT: Mental lapse ^^

There are ridiculously few really good end-game trinkets around at the moment. To exacerbate the problem, the old Alchemist Stones now have zero defense on them, which is how many Alchemy professional Warriors statted a majority of their defense.

The beauty of this trinket is twofold. Firstly, it allows you to drop the various defense enchants and such that most tanking classes will have had to use to reach the 540 cap, in preference to things like Strength (for Threat) and Stamina. Secondly, the usage on the item is like a second "Last Stand", which will give you considerably better longevity when taking on burst damage, reducing overhealing from your healers for 15 seconds.

In short, for tanks looking to break the initial 30k HP barrier when running normal Naxxramas, this trinket is fantastic. For tanks who have progressed further, it's still fantastic for the reasons above.

As a level 80 DK starting to tank Naxx, i would say it is a must have for DKs, since it is hard to reach 540 def now and before Naxx and it even gets worse when i look at the "upgrades" from Naxx/T7 regarding defense...

exception might be DKs with 2 x 1h with defense on it, but there are no tanking 2h weapons out there until now except a green quest one i think... but who wants to run around in raids with green 2h weapon and maybe get trouble with TPS... :D

This or "Seal of pantheon" is definitely a must have for any tank who's looking to replace any kind of gear when entering Naxxramas. As a Paladin tank I had a hard time reaching the cap and staying full epic at the same time. Once you get a hold of this sweet trinket, you should have no problem replacing various items. While some might claim that it's possible to reach the cap without defense trinkets (which it is) they should really look into the tier 7 items and epics from the bosses in naxxramas. The defense rating is pitiful.

i wouldn't say this is trinket is "vital" for prot warriors or paladins. the valor medal and essence of gossamer are both better under most circumstances. it's very possible to maintain 540 defense with proper gemming and enchanting. one situation where this trinket really does come in handy is when you're doing sapphiron in frost resist gear. there's no defense on icebane, and even if you gem and enchant for it, you're still going to be a long way from the minimum. this trinket will put you over the mark and allow you to gem for stam and avoidance. basically you'll only need it if you're still relying on seal of the pantheon to keep you at 540, and then replace the seal with this.

This trinket will come in very handy for Sapphiron since most tanks will want to use their frost gear for mitigation. Unless you gem that gear with +Def, you will drop below the cap. This and the blue Def trinket is a nice big "make-up" chunk.

Thats slightly incorrect . . . The correct answer is "No one needs to wear frost res. gear".

That depends on gear of your raid, especially - healers' and tanks' gear. For fresh guilds who are starting Sapphiron, frost res gear is a must.

I like having this for all the defense rating in one spot. Frees up Gem Slots for Stam or what have you instead of having to worry about staying above the cap.

This is NOT a must-have for any tank. As a DK, I have passed this to another tank twice now (along with a lot of other gear that is made obvious by checking my armory page). With Essence of Gossamer and Figurine - Monarch Crab, I'm sitting at 547 defense with only one +16 defense gem in the Crab and Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle on my 2h axe. Blizzard basically handed us the cap with this rune. xD

I've seen plenty of other tanks that don't use this or Seal of the Pantheon and are still past their 540. I have to agree with Ravagus a few posts up that this is really only a situational item. Sure, Seal was a great item to have to get to the cap before heroics, but it was ditched soon after because the defense is easily made up with enchants. I personally have all my gear socketed for stamina, and I'm not in anything overly fantastic.

Not bad by any means, but you won't suffer too much if you don't have it.

in my opinion if you are already capped on defense i would still opt for it because on the single fact you added defense rating surely with gems and enchants so with this trinket you can easily build up more on stamina i have my stamina mats ready just so i have mitigation because lets be honest can you have too much stamina when every other critical requirement is met? this will help you make more use of free spaces that where once defense rating enhancements.

correct me if i am wrong but its what you make of it beyond what it provides

do ppl read before commenting any more these days? let me break it down kindergarten style for you ppl that can't......this trinket is not needed, your right. you can stay crit immune without it, with proper gems and enchants. this is true. BUT if you get this trinket and use it, it frees up some space so that you dont have to gem and enchant for def. how do you not think that that is a good thing, that frees up so much space for better enchants than def, like STAM, and frees up gem slots for gems with STAM and dodge, or parry. think MC FLY think!

Got this trinket for tank Paladin and I have to say that this gives so good boost of defense that I am able to try out different enchant and gem setups without losing def cap 540.

I really like this trinket, also use effect is useful for most fights.

I'd say as a Deathknight tank, this trinket is a must have. I haven't gotten it yet, but once I do it will allow for much more freedom in choosing what gems and enchants to socket. I'll be able to finally drop some of my +Def gems/enchants and focus more on stacking large amounts of stamina. That, and I can increase my avoidance with the Rune of Swordshattering.

Very useful if you plan on MTing Hodir. Frost Resistance is almost a must for that fight, but Hodir still hits very hard, so you need to maintain 540 defense.

@Stigmata - Because the Frost Resist gear has no defense on it, you need to make it up from other sources. This trinket gives you a lot of defense allowing you to maybe wear an extra piece of Frost Resist while staying capped.

If you need to gem for defence, you're overcompensating, so yes you'll need a def trinket

You won't need this trinket or the blue one when you're naturally "def-capped" and can gem for stam+dodge/hit/expertise depending on which tanking set you're gemming (i.e. max mitigation or max threat)

The true value of a trinket such as this is that you can use it to mix-and-match the rest of your gear. A typical example is when you are first learning a fight such as Hodir, it is useful for your tank to have 2 or even 3 pieces of frost resistance. Normally you have no use for this trinket, but after losing defense from your other slots swimply swapping this in gives you the defense you need.

After all trinkets are meant to be swapped in and out based on what's most useful for a particular fight. Generally you will have a standard set of trinkets which work for almost everything but why not give yourself more tools? As a tank having a pretty diverse toolbox is essential to doing your job well.

If as a tank this drops and you don't already have it, get it. You're gimping yourself if you don't and let it go. All of this arguing whether such and such is better is pointless. Just get this trinket and keep it handy for when the time comes that you need to use it.

This whole discussion is quite silly.

It doesn't "free" slots and enchants because it has defense, it "frees" them because your crappy old blue trinket WAS WORSE.

Let me explain it with general numbers:

If your crappy blue that is worse - according to blizzard's ilevels and theorycrafters' sites - HAS LOADS OF STAMINA, it will NOT DROP your stamina just because it had no defense.

i.e. You may NOT gain stamina but you WILL gain avoidance from other specs. i.e. your dodge and parry may raise - or even only your gain will be the on-demand ability of this trinket. The bottom line is you don't "save" stamina or defense or anything, you just get a better trinket (if it was better).

It dropped for our raid today. And me, being insanely stupid, was so happy when it dropped that I forgot to roll on it. It went to another player who would disenchant it, but luckily, he made a ticket and soon I will get the trinket.

This trinket is not too useful for DKs tho. they have a easier time hitting the def cap, and they dont make as much use of defense with the absence of block. A better choice trinket combo would be essence of gossamer and the black heart, which give 111 and 126 stamina respectively. Also, DKs get 6% additional stamina in frost presence and also another 2% when using stoneskin gargoyle. This is still an awesome trinket for pallies and warriors.

Still useful in 3.2, especially granted the total lack of def rating on some really excellent and fairly easy-to-obtain tanking items, such as https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=47500 andhttps://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=47243. if the upgrade drops you below the cap, swap in this trinket rather than having to re-gem. also excellent for starting tanks trying to stay at the cap while upgrading their blues into purples, as blues tend to have high def rating (but not anything else).

If you're capped without it, obviously, there are much better options: https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=47216 wins out by a mile, as does the jewelcrafting trinket, and even https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=40683 is more total avoidance (even after diminishing returns if count the on-use ability), to say nothing of the higher-ilvl trinkets. the on-use ability here is far less useful these days than it was, as any boss that you would actually need a panic button for hits for 5 or 6 times the bonus health if not more.

so definitely keep it around if you've got it, and definitely roll on it if you see it, but it's by no means the best in slot unless you actually need it to hit 540, and i certainly wouldn't suffer through a whole naxx 10 run just in the hopes of getting it.

In the days that we play wow you will be hard pressed to find a nax 25 team so as great as this item is to have if you dont have it you wont get it. Nax 10 runs still happen now and then but nax 25 is old content and you wont get your hands on this.

The good part to the sad story is with the new emblem gear you dont need it since def cap is still 540 and the 232 and 245 gear will get you there easy.

But i still want it in my bank for some reason. It was just that good on my dk tank but on my new pally tank i wont be able to get it.

Was doing some thinking here. About to level my second tank to 80 (75 currently). If you are gemming for defense (or enchanting, though I wont go into all the scenarios that brings) but have the choice to get this trinket, even though naxx is rarely ran anymore, it would be smart. If you consider that you get 30 stam or 20 defense from your gems and don't waste any of the defense this trinket gets, the opportunity cost becomes exactly 126 stamina, which happens to be the identical amount of stamina the same ilvl Black Heart gives.

In other words, itemization looks perfect, all is well with the world, and you should only use this as opposed to the Black Heart (and gemming defense) if you use all of its defense rating - procs/on use aside.

Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

nax 25 is old content and you wont get your hands on this.

You are confused on where this drops. It drops in 10m, not 25m, which you correctly say is ran more frequently.
