Needed for alchemists to specialize in Elixirs. And such a outrageous requirement. The Black Morass isn't known for its easiness, and the essences isn't even a guaranteed drop. This should scare most alchemists into going for Master of Transmutation, which is a lot easier as you can do it without going into any instance.

Edit: Above comment isn't really valid anymore seeing as things have become a lot easier over the years.

It is indeed needed for Alchemists to specialize into Elixir's, however I do not agree with it being an outrageous requirement what-so-ever. Get yourself a group with 1 healer, 1 rank, and 3 DPS. No real crowd control is needed (sap, sheep, seduce, ect) its just all out DPS!

I had a guild group which consisted of me (Paladin), Mage, Enhancement Shaman, Rogue and Feral Druid. It was extremely easy, with me never going OOM as the solo healer.

I got 6 in my first run, 3 in my second, and completed it on the first Rift Lord on the 3rd run. In all, just over 2 hours.

It was my first time running Black Morass today and it seemed really easy:
2 feral druids dps (me and another guildy)
warrior
mage
priest
We managed to kill the elites and adds before another elite spawned on the next portal and it went pretty smoothly, with a druid picking up the healing when our priest got sheeped.

However, I only got 5 drops on the first run (we only got to the 2nd boss before Spinebreaker shut down - the instance was reset when we were able to load back on so that was rly only half an instance). I had 4 drop on the second run so I still need to go back to get that last drop =*(

The Black Morass is easy.. but c'mon. I've run it four times now and I'm only at 7.

One thing to note, though, is if there's another Alchemist who needs them, the items don't drop for both people, and only one person can see them per drop, even if one person is attempting to pass them off to another.

Abysmal drop rate on these, all things considered. I got 2 on my first run, made me want to give up then, especially since I had no other reason to run BM. You'll need patience, and probably 3 runs of BM on average, to get this done.

Well I went on a BM run with:
Shaman Resto (me)
Warr Tank
Warr Dps
Lock
Pala DPS

First run: 7 Crystals (Very Good)
Second run: 0 (Bad)
Third run: 0 (Very Bad)
Forth run: 1 Crystal (Idiotic)
I just unplugged my computer and went to cut my veins!

Got 7 essences after 2 runs, I should be able complete the quest on my next run

I knew the drop rate of these Essences were low from having seen them from the perspective of being a group member watching alchemists trying to get them. Well I finally got a alchemist myself to this point and elected to do Elixir mastery. After 2 runs into Black Morass I got one per run for a total of 2 out of 10. I was hoping to be lucky to earn more per run but just letting others know who take this route better prepare themselves for a long grind to get them if you are the unlucky one stuck with the low drop rate.

I completed the collecting of the Essence of Infinity. The drop rate was as follows
1st run - one
2nd - one
3rd - two
4th - four
5th - one
6th - one
This was done in seven days as I couldn't find a Black Morass group one day. I wasn't able to get more than one run a day as no group I was with wanted to do more than one run and I wasn't able to get a group to do a run one day which accounts to a total of seven days to complete the collection. All in all it can be a long process just use patience and a bit of luck.

I just ran Regular BM and I got 6 of ten on the first try.

Ran it again and got the last 4 before the second boss.

Maybe the drop rate has changed?

Blizzard needs to up the drop rate and make it so that every Alchemist on the quest can loot them from the same bodies. It's bad enough that we have to go into Black Morass at all (now that Wrath's out it's pretty much become a "forbidden" zone, since most people are just going to go to Northrend once they hit 68), but making us go past the second boss is just cruel.
Not every group can get the people needed to dispel the second boss's Hasten buff (to keep that thing under control you need AT LEAST 2 people who can dispel the buff).

I must be the craziest bastard on the planet: Only need 2 more, and I'm not gonna wait around for a group to finish this quest. Trying to solo the other 2 as 74 Balance Druid: definitely not one of my smartest moves.

solo'ed as an 80 shadow priest up until last boss - priority should be keeping VE/DP/shield up and mind sear as the adds pass by... 2nd boss was very close ><

Also solo'd as an 80 frost mage with mostly heroic gear and a few pieces from naxx 10. The 2nd boss was too hard for me, but you can go out and reset the instance at any time, so collecting the essences should pose no problem.

Did it on my 74 priest just now, with my 80 Death Knight friend, Did the whole run, and got 9.

Went in again to get the last one, dropped off second RiftLord. Just Went "Sod it" and ran out after that

Just finished this with my lv70 paladin. Almost impossible to find a group since all are doing wotlk instances, however I was lucky and our guild master with another guild member ran it with me twice. I ended up healing although retri specced as the others were lv 80 mage and lock, we used lock's felguard for tanking. Pretty easy, didn't even come close to wiping. So the advice is, get your friends do it with you otherwise you are screwed.
The good news is the drop rate was increased I got 7 dropped on first run and remaining 3 and second run before 2nd boss came.

Solo'd as an 80 Blood Death Knight.

Keep diseases up on the bosses and portal keepers and hit pestilence whenever adds spawn.

Took me two runs to get all 10.

Funny but true story. Just now am screwing with Alchemy again, as we need a flask maker for raiding. So, here I am finally specializing in Elixir's, and went back to shat, got the quest, and on my way to KoT. Get in the instance to collect my Essence's and I'm noticing, "Hey, this isn't nearly as easy as I expected, wtf?" So I continue onward through the first boss when a BoJ drops after the kill. I'm like, huh? I suddenly realize I've left my setting on "Heroic." It made me lol, and I continued on just for kicks to see if I could beat the last boss (still the coolest looking dragon ever). It was really no sweat, 80 epic Bear with a smattering of ilevel 213 and 200 gear from Naxx, two piece Valorous bonus, 32k self buffed HP.

Bad part, I had to go out and reset the instance and run it again to get all my Essences, but it was fun soloing it on heroic. :)

Focus only on Rift Keeper and Rift Lord
When rest of mobs killed guy who open portal I just go out reset and go again from begining
it took me some 4 or 5 resets
Not bad and quiker then w8 for group

Is it possible to do BM on Heroic and still get the essences of infinity?
'Cause if it is I would suggest that for all the 80s, becasue they won't get xp and good drops from the norm BM.

I just decided that my lvl 80 hunter (mostly Naxx 25 geared) will become Master of elixirs which forced me to do this quest / instance. It is relatively easy, bosses included, if you are extreme solo specced and have the right pet. I used heavy BM build, 62/9/0 - be sure to pick all pet defensive talents and I used crocolisk as a pet (talent tree here ). Also be sure to have these glyphs: Mending and Bestial Wrath

Strat: After pulling The elite at each rift, put down a Frost trap close to an elite mob for case that crocolisk´s Thunderstomp misses some adds. Beware not to put in water. Like this your pet should get a grab of every spawn add and if not, just Misdirect the add to your pet. Burn down the elite, occasionally heal your pet - but you will not have do it often because it heals itself quite a lot. Pop Bestial Wrath and Kill command whenever they are up...

This works for every portal, you wont even need to eat or bandage yourself for whole instance...

the lazy option is of course to do the master of transmutes, then just pay 150G to change mastery. 150G is not a great deal of gold at that level, especially when you start pumping out flasks to the AH, Flask of the frost wyrm and Flask of endless rage are consistently in the top 15 most sold items at AH and go for a good amount of gold :-)

Aspiring alchemists, don't be daunted by the measly drop rate shown here, it's much higher, maybe 33%. I did it myself in two runs.
The instance itself is very easy, for a level 80. You might want to group with someone else, but it's not incredibly hard.

Disc Priest, lvl 80.

I'm soloing for the essence and I can kill 2 Rift Lords / Keepers before the shield fails.
I just wait 5 min for the respawn and start again.
It takes some time, but this way I can solo it without having to run to the start for a reset.
If the drop rate is correct (1 : 3) I should have enough (10) within 2 hours.

Edit: It took me 1h20m to get all 10 essences. Not a bad grind.
The Rift Lords are melee and have a higher healthpool (65K), it takes longer to bring them down.
They have a buff near the end were they do more damage. Keep some extra health for the end.
The Rift Keepers (55K) are casters (frost) and go down quicker. Frost protection could help.

Somewhere between 1 hour and 2 hour grind should be possible and the droprate around 30% seems to be right.

Drop in both normal mode and heroic mode, thus easier to do at 80 solo if you have the class/gear.

I did this as a decently geared Shadow Priest, I did it the first time with my friend a feral druid and I healed him, he quit after the first time though and I only gained 3 shards from it.

I went back in a second time and managed to down the first 2 bosses solo. The portal after the second boss I got my last shard, overall took me less than two runs.

Solo'd as a level 80 Prot Paladin. Easy, but ridiculously boring. I did the first 12 waves and then just let the second boss eat Medivh, and waited for respawn. This drop should be from every wave.

Normal mode as a Shadowpriest (232-245 gear lv):
Rift keepers: just nuke.
First boss: nuke.
Second boss: nuke, but try to keep PW:Shield (-50% healing debuff).
Third boss: start with PW:Shield, nuke just like everything else, Disperse at Time Stop.
Never got below 50% in the entire instance.

Also it took 2 full runs to get the Elixir Mastery quest done.

Easily solo'ed this as an 84 arcane mage. I don't even think I went below 65% health at any point in time. Threw out my mirror image, flame orb and buffed myself with arcane power, and boom.

Aarg! Managed to collect 8 of the essences but then stupidly completed the "The Opening of the Dark Portal" quest and now, of course, the instance wont spawn again and I cant get the remaining 2 essences! I know I only have my stupidity to blame but do you know of any way to get the remaining 2 or for the instance to reset for me? It was such a hassle to go to the Caverns of Time, complete the quest line etc to get these stupid instances that I am about to start crying! Thanks!

This is easily soloable if you're doing your Elixir Mastery quest. As an iLvl 341 Assassination Rogue (level 85), this is a walk in the park. It's just freakin' annoying because you have to run this retarded dungeon multiple times to get your ten essences. Crack a beer and try not to be bored, because you'll more than likely be doing it twice, hopefully not three times.

I have no idea what all your problems are, saying you barely get any of these.... I did this solo and got 10 of them with 4 rifts still lefts... lol some people just either love to complain, or they think it takes forever to get anything that doesnt have a 100% drop rate..

I thought I was going to have to do the caverns 10 times and almost didnt even do it after I read the first comments about poeple crying that it takes to long.

Drop rate is still annoyingly low. I'm fairly certain any 80+ could solo this. At 346, I'm 3 shotting bosses as an arcane mage.

Addition: drop rate appears to be slightly higher than reported by wowhead. On average, I received a quest drop every 3 Rift Keepers. It took me 2 runs to finish, ignoring the last boss on both runs.

Shadow Priest (85), 349 gear. Too easy.// two in the first wave, three in the second and four in the last wave. Reset instance, got the 10th piece on the first part of the first wave. Cheaper and in my opinion easier than buying 4 primal might, setting yourself as transmutation master....than dropping transmutation master (150 gold) then flying all the way to shattrath and redo to become a elix master. Primal might = 400+gold on my server. Plus i had to find the recipe. Too much work, just go to black morass, go be an OP hero.

extremely bad drop rate! I have 4 in about 25 rift portal kills - as hard as this is to complete, this quest is stupid - alchemist be warned!

In 2 runs I've gotten 5--18 Rift Lords, and only 2-3 drop the Essence at a time when you have the quest. The other Alchemist masteries aren't quite this annoying--Potions only have to kill Freywinn in Botanica and loot the book off him. Transmuters make a few Primal Mights, the most annoying part of that being to gather the motes to transmute or simply buy them.

Expect to run BM a couple times, at least 4 with this. On the plus side, you'll get loads of Rep.

I found the droprate to be quite reasonable, it's definitely more than 5% as posted on this site. Of course you will only see the drop if you have the quest, so maybe that's why they have the droprate ridiculously low. I got them about 30% of the time, it didnt take too many runs.

And for those of you wondering how often Elixir Mastery procs, I've had it for about a week now and I estimate an extra potion 15-20% of the time.

You have to keep in mind that the listed drop percentage most likely takes into consideration ALL kills, even when the person looting wasn't on the quest. All quest items are like this and you will most likely enjoy a much better drop rate than that listed.

i ran BM 2 days ago and only got 4 i think it was b/c i was dpsing the adds and when the miny boss died i didnt see him. so make sure that when a boss goes down to loot him even the miny bosses. it is possible to do it in 1 run but most likely 2 would do the trick.

The dropp chance of these is still awful in TBCC. Out of two runs, I got 6 essences in total (three per run). Note that I was the only one doing this quest, so expect 2-4 runs to get all 10.

Insane quest. I got 7 in 2 runs. In the actual phase of game, 1 month before WotLK this quest is a an insult.
Ill abandon the quest, go for transmute master, then switch at a price of 4 mights and 150 G.
