Keystone of the Tol'vir tier in archaeology that is found randomly while surveying in Tol'vir dig-sites.
When placed in artifacts keystone slots it is the equivalent of 12 Tol'vir archaeology fragments

You can get digsites in Uldum once you hit 450 Archaeology. I started farming Kalimdor as soon as I hit 450 and solved a Tol'vir artifact before hitting 525.

I'm feeling the market for these in the past day or so. First one I put in for the Wowhead suggested prize of 700g...Sold in less than five minutes. Second I put in for 1.3k, sold even quicker. I just dropped three on the AH for 2k apiece, and then announced it in trade. Sold before I even left the city.

I don't know what the upper limit on these things are, but I'm going to put some in for 4k and see if they sell. I thought the Vial of the Sands would be what made me alot of gold on my server...Turns out, it's these little buggers.

One achievement where the use of a Hieroglyphic may be worthwhile is Headed South, due to the difficulty and the time investment required for it. If you're doing a two healer set up, the 10% damage boost in Lost City will help speed up the achievement, making it a very worthwhile investment.

These are usually go up and down on the AH because of stupid undercutters, so I basicly wait for them to be in a range of 600-900g each, buy them all and post for 1.3k gold~, if they don't sell I use them myself since I grind for the Qiraj mount anyhow (57th solve atm)

With the 4.0.6 change that caps each race's fragment count at 200, it is good to know that you won't lose fragments if your total exceeds 200 using keystones to solve an artifact.

I tested this while surveying Draenei sites and working on Arrival of the Naaru. My fragment count reached 165; I used 3 keystones, bringing my total to 201 and solved. I ended up with 77 fragments after solving this 124-fragment artifact.
201-124=77. No loss! :)

I would very much recomend to NOT use these, as they go for about 800g on my server (Tarren Mill Horde). So Archaeology is become abit more useful, with the upped price on greys and the AH prices on these "bonus fragments".

These can be used for small buffs in Halls of Origination, Lost City of the Tol'vir and Vortex Pinnacle. Using them for this purpose though is the WoW version of lighting a cigar with a $100 bill.

With the procs from the level 24 guild perk occasionally granting additional tablets from archaeology, you can now make a nice bit of profit off of these depending on server prices. Obviously, this may not be the best choice if you're actually going for an item from tol'vir archaeology, but if you're farming for the night elf trinket then this is a nice addition.

For those who are seeking the Tol'vir archaeology reward, here's some important results. A few weeks ago Blizzard changed the rules so that when you got all the rares for one race, you will get fewer digsites for that race. Like many archaeologists, I am exclusively working on Kalimdor to get the three nice rewards from Uldum/Tol'vir (one ring, two weapons, and the Recipe: Vial of the Sands). My approach is to try to get as many Tol'vir artifacts as possible. So with that approach my 784 artifacts were divided as follows:

4% dwarf,
17% fossil,
50% night elf,
17% Tol'vir,
11% Troll.

I hated getting all those night elf fragments but eventually it paid off with Tyrande's Favorite Doll and all the other Night Elf rares. Since then I have continued the same strategy, but with the following different results because Blizzard says when you get all the rares of one type we should get fewer of that type of digsites now. And here are my results for the next 200 digsites:

26% dwarf,
27% fossil,
23% night elf,
33% Tol'vir,
13% troll.

That's an amazing increase in results for Tol'vir. Your results will vary based on your continent and your priorities for choosing digsites. This is good news for archaeologists. Still, it's a lot of work. But note that if Blizzard ever adds another night elf reward, I will probably be back at 50% night elf digsites.

I'm assuming from your increased dwarf percentage on Kalimdor that you don't yet have the Staff of Sorceror-Thane...Can you confirm?

Also, did you have Zin'rokh at the time?

You are correct. I thought I implied, perhaps I didn't, that the ONLY race for which I have all the rares is Night Elf. But as the patch notes say, when you have all the artifacts of a given race, then the likelihood of the appearance of the artifacts of that race goes DOWN, not that "the remaining races with whom you do not have all the rares goes up". That would be difficult for Blizzard to implement. So when one race's artifacts is completed, all the others' percentages go up regardless of the others' completion status. The amount of "upness" will be continent dependent. This is such a fine point I don't think anyone should read this post. Please mark me down. :-)

After reading a ton of comments, I felt like I was going crazy because I couldn't find the appropriate checkbox on my DBM. Turns out they took it out and packaged it as a separate addon, DBM-Archaeology.

From Curse:

Originally just put in DBM-Core as a bit of humor during a test phase. The sounds became quite popular and when removed from last DBM release got numerous requests from users wanting them back. Since archaeology sounds don't really belong in the base mod, I decided to bring that feature back in plugin form!.

Now you can enjoy all your old god whispers in your dig sites. What this mod does is play a random C'thun and Yogg Saron whispers from the game files any time you loot a keystone. Archaeology is a profession meddling with the ancient artifacts of azeroth yet no one is paying any mind ot you. This plugin gives archaeology a bit of RP when the old gods whisper you as if they are noticing you meddling with things you should not be, giving archaeology that feel it should have had to begin with.

Hopefully that will save someone the stress of thinking they just couldn't see what was right in front of them, which is the problem I thought I was having.

What is it?
Hiéroglyphe tol'vir is the ultimate supplement to getting through your Tol'vir solves much quicker. To break it down:

It is an archaeological keystone that can substitute 12 fragments for each slot/socket you can place one into
Some archaeology solves will allow for up to three keystones to be used - open your archaeology pane and look for the empty 'sockets' that may appear at the bottom to determine how many you might be able to use
You are not required to use keystones when solving archaeological artifacts, but it certainly can speed up the process
There are some artifacts that will not allow for any keystones at all
This keystone can also be used in a daily quest in a couple of Cataclysm dungeons which will give your party a tiny buff (absolutely not worth it with these puppies)

Examples:

Vase canope = 45 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments; or
Vase canope = 21 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments + 2 Hiéroglyphe tol'vir

Griffe rampante = 150 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments; or
Griffe rampante = 114 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments + 3 Hiéroglyphe tol'vir

Where do I get it?
There are only two main sources for Hiéroglyphe tol'vir:

Digging in Uldum - when surveying and digging at archaeological dig sites in Uldum you will have a small chance to occasionally see one of these along with the Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments you collect. You need to have at least 450 in Archaeology in order to have a chance of these Uldum dig sites even spawning. You will need to be level 84-85 in order not to get EATEN by mobs that may appear at your dig site. There are 16 tol'vir sites in total that may spawn (though there is a maximum of four dig sites per continent):
- Akhenet Fields
- Keset Pass
- Khartut's Tomb
- Neferset City
- Obelisk of the Stars
- Orsis
- Ruins of Ahmtul
- Ruins of Ammon
- Ruins of Khintaset
- Sahket Wastes
- Schnottz's Landing
- Steps of Fate (south of the Halls of Origination)
- Temple of Uldum
- The Cursed Landing
- Tombs of the Precursors (north of the Halls of Origination)
- Vir'naal River Delta (near Lost City of Tol'vir)
- The auction house - though be prepared to pay through the nose. Most servers see these going for 500g-1000g each (approximates current as at 4.3.3) as many people farm for the ultimate in rare toys, trinkets, weapons, mounts and recipes.

What cool items can I use it for?

If you are an archaeologist with at least 450 points levelled in the profession, then you can start digging in Uldum and solving Tol'vir artifacts.

Alternatively, if you don't want to use Hiéroglyphe tol'vir yourself, you can sell them and make a killing on other treasure hunters with gold to burn! :D

There are six rare Tol'vir artifacts:

Griffe rampante requiring 150 fragments with 3x Hiéroglyphe tol'vir that can be used (my 50th Tol'vir solve)
Cimeterre du sirocco requiring 150 fragments with 3x Hiéroglyphe tol'vir that can be used (still don't have it - my warrior tank would have loved this pre-Firelands)
Sceptre d'Azj'Aqir requiring 150 fragments with 3x Hiéroglyphe tol'vir that can be used (my 126th Tol'vir solve 05/03/12 - follow the item link for screenshots)

There is also one common artifact that alchemists will eagerly hunt for, as it has a chance of containing Recette : Fiole des sables:

I don't understand why these sell for so much more on the AH than any other? I would much prefer to sell these for like 800g a pop than use them for a measly 12 fragments...

I do not know about the rest of you but I found Arch to be longest of all the prof. This one require a lot more work :)

You notice that they all show 0 in the drop rate but one....I think that is also misake myself.....this is not a drop by grinding out NPC's in Uldum!
