Immolation has a 15 second duration, so by doubling the damage but reducing it's duration by 6 seconds, your immolation trap is doing 20% additional damage.

A few possible uses:

As stated in the immolation trap comments, useful for bosses that force you into melee range constantly
More useful in pvp as it will need to be dispelled quicker in order prevent its damage

Not sure if this glyph is currently working properly. Immolation trap tooltip says it should do 2148 fire damage over 9 seconds. Testing it, though, only has it doing 1392 damage..

A very useful glyph, I sometimes use this over frost/freezing trap as it quickly finishes off the monster I aggro from my pet.
Also good for DPS in some ways

This glyph will actually be usefull at 3.0.8 with the new version of the https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=60053. Combined with https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=34493 and https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=19376 it will give a solid dps boost to SV hunters that will do the immolation trap + https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=56344. Since explosive shot will seem to be the shot that will receive the greatest boost from the rest of the hunter abilities and as well have the less CD beating https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=53209 10 sec cd , definetly worths boosting that trap as far as possible. After all u can still shoot any boss from the minimun range so u dont have to loose significant dps while running back and forth to place the trap ( no to mention the fact that immolation trap has a 2 yard range). All in all this glyph boosts trap`s dmg by 20% and u should consider applying it to your spellbook if u choose to follow the SV path after the BM nerf.

Here's an explanation for immolation trap and how this glyph works
Unglyphed: 1885 + RAP*.1 (5 ticks, 1 tick every 3 seconds for 15 seconds)
Each tick is thus doing 377 + RAP*.02

This glyph removes two ticks but increases the damage done by the first three ticks by 100%.
3*(377+RAP*.02)*2=2262 + RAP*.12

The trap does ALOT of damage with this glyph and if its good for anything its leveling personally .. hey half your life went away in 9 seconds!

With the new 3.1 changes this glyph is gonna be a must have. With explosive shot refreshing Immolation trap every 6 secs, maybe longer due to GCD, you dont get the full damage from the trap because its 15 secs long. With this Glyph it cause the trap to be more of a burst, so you get all most of the damage when you refresh it with explosive shot.

Just keep in mind that for SV this talent means reducing the chance of LnL proc.

In Mists of Pandaria this glyph has changed.

OLD: Glyph of Immolation Trap
Decreases the duration of the effect from your Immolation Trap by 6 sec, but damage while active is increased by 100%.

NEW: Glyph of Explosive Trap
Your Explosive Trap no longer deals damage, instead knocking enemies back from the trap when it explodes.
