Quite possibly the most uninteresting holiday of the WoW calendar.

Blizzard could've done so much more with this one; a small quest chain to visit the graveyards of all the major cities for example. At least that would justify giving us a "real" pet.

This event kinda sucks. I was hoping for the pet, but it's not even a real pet. It's a click-to-summon pet. The mask is pretty cool, but everything can only be used on Day of the Dead, so you just have a bunch of items that take up bank space for 364 days of the year.

they should have made the marionettes as "real" pets and used the sugar skulls (or bread of the dead) as reagents for it. similar to the ones for Christmas (reindeer/snowman/etc)

...or have schematics for it as reward for something, and give engineers something (new) to do

graveyard laps would have been a nice addition -- maybe not just the city ones, there's so many across the continents...

...putting the candle bottles at them
...different cemetery spirits give random quickie quests, or something...
...kill graverobbers

PS: we need sombreros (craftable or reward) now!

This isn't such a bad holiday if you get an achievement and a 1-day pet (not to mention the sombrero costume). Just look at Harvest Festival...

6.0.2 EDIT: The holiday got even more amazing with new stuff, not to mention that since 2013, the Macabre Marionette pet has become permanent!

Costumes: (Does not need to be Day of the Dead to use, but can only be bought during the holiday. They can be purchased from Chapman for 100g each.)

For anyone looking near Goldshire for Catrina, don't. She's been moved from that location and has been put inside Stormwind at the gaveyard, newly introduced in the remoddling of the city during the Sundering (just before Cata at the remoddling of the world). You can find her at 47,26 inside Stormwind.

I couldn't get the quest in Undercity, but it was there in Org. I'm a troll. Does your race have anything to do with it? *scratches head*

Update: I got on my blood elf DK. Nothing in Undercity... again, nothing in Org. I went to Silvermooon, and the quest was there for her. She had already completed it last year, so it is repeatable. I guess you have to be in the capital city of your race.

I suggest picking up your flour and milk before trotting off over to the cemetary. It'll save the time of having to run back and forth :)

yes, this is true also :) although I believe one of my toons didn't see it in Dal, so I went elsewhere. I don't know why she couldn't get it there, but who knows.

This quest is "race" sensitive. Undead go to Undercity, Troll and Orc outside of Org. and Tauren at Thunderbluff etc. I believe anyone can do them at neutral cities (Shat. and Dal.) although I'm not 100% sure. Also, you can't see the quest giver unless you use "orange marigold", this enables you to see the ghosts for a brief period of time.
I was a little confused because my 1st 2 toons I did this with were a troll and an orc and both got them outside of Org., but when I came to do it with my tauren it wasn't offered. Thanks to a nice GM who pointed me in the right direction.

You have to use the flower to see invisible, then there is a Cheerful Ghost in the graveyard that will give you the quest for the pet.

Like posted above said, it is race sensitive, so make sure your in the right place.

Still look for the cheerful ghost.

So you wanna do the day of the Dead? Head to your races capital city, find the graveyard. Die if you must ;)

So walk up to the people, no quests to be seen?...talk to the vendor, buy yourself a Orange Marigold or if you are feeling friskyBouquet of Orange Marigolds then you can see the one quest giver.

Pick up the quest, go to the vendor, buy yourself theRecipe: Bread of the Dead head to your nearest cooking supplies/inn, pick up some milk and some simple flour. Can't make the bread?

Head back to the vendor, there is a blue fire called Ghostly Cooking Fire, next to them you can cook there. Thats the only fire you can make the bread of the dead on.

Grab yourself another Orange Marigold or use your Bouquet of Orange Marigolds and turn in! you got yourself a cute little Macabre Marionette.

Unfortunately, he is only usable during Day of the Dead.

To finish the Day, dance with Catrina to getDead Man's Party

Goblins are outside at the Org graveyard also. Please note that you can dance with Catrina at any GY, but you can only do the quest at your racial graveyard.

Even though this holiday is very short in game, Blizzard did a great job if you look at the real life holiday it represents:

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and around the world in many cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it attains the quality of a National Holiday. The celebration takes place on November 1–2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts.

Ultimate Guide:

Introduction to the Event & What You Can Receive:

During this event we are celebrating the dead that have died for us and is based on the Spanish holiday celebrated in Mexico.

Anyway, the holiday is only 2 days long, starting on the 1st of November at 01:00 Game Time until the end of the following day (23:59 2nd of November).

As this event is only spanned over just under two days it means that there is very much less to do than a normal event and will not count towards What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been as it is such a minor event but will award you with the Dead Man's Party achievement, some perishable items (will not remain in your bags after the event has ended), as well as a perishable cooking recipe (Recipe: Bread of the Dead) (the bread made from the cooking recipe requires the event to be active to be made as it specifies but also because the fires required to make are only active during the event), and some off-hand flowers (unusable in transmog due to no stats). There (as far as I know) is no minimum level requirements.

Highlights:

Invisible Ghosts! (explained below)

Macabre Marionette (it is not a proper pet as it will not be in your spellbook, but will remain in your bags and will disappear after the event ends)

What to do for the Event:

In every major city (or just outside of) is where the event takes place:

Neutral:

Dalaran - Graveyard can be found in next to Violet Citadel in the grass next to the Underbelly entrance.

Shattrath - Graveyard is just outside the East Gate of the city.

Alliance:

Ironforge - Graveyard can be found to the south (southeast really) of the entrance up a small hill. coords 61,37

Stormwind - Graveyard can be found in Stormwind beside Stormwind Lake, behind the Cathedral.

Darnassus - Graveyard located directly behind the Guild Master house in Darnassus. coords 69,40.

Exodar - Graveyard is just south of Azure Watch.

Horde:

Silvermoon City - Going from Silvermoon go west past The Dead Scar before you get to Falcon Square.

Thunder Bluff - Graveyard can be found right next to the north lift of the Middle Rise

Orgrimmar - Can be found left of the road heading south right past the boar farm.

Undercity - Graveyard is located inside the courtyard of the city right across from the chamber for the Orb of Translocation

It is recommended that you go to your race's main city otherwise you won't be able to pick up the quest The Grateful Dead.

Once you have found a graveyard you will then see two NPC's; Catrina and Chapman. Dance with Catrina to get the achievement Dead Man's Party and get transformed into a special Undead. Chapman is a vendor with some items to sell and 5/6 of his items require the event to be active to even remain in your bags.

To complete the quest The Grateful Dead and earn the Macabre Marionette you must be in your respective main city's graveyard (Dranei = Exodar, Dwarf = Ironforge, Gnome = Ironforge, Human = Stormwind, Night elf = Darnassus, Worgen = Darnassus Blood elf = Silvermoon, Undead = Undercity, Orc = Orgrimmar, Tauren = Thunderbluff, Troll = Orgrimmar, Goblin = Orgrimmar). Once you are there you must buy an Orange Marigold (consumed on use, cost 10 copper), or the Bouquet of Orange Marigolds (not consumed on use, 1 gold) - 30 second buff timer, 30 second cooldown - from Chapman, use it at the graveyard and accept the quest from the NPC with the quest, that shows up (you can now see NPCs as the item provides the player with lesser invisibility). You will now be required to create Bread of the Dead. To obtain the bread buy the recipe (required cooking level 1) from Chapman. Once learned, to create the item you will need to acquire a 'Simple Flour' and an 'Ice Cold Milk' (it is recommended to purchase the items before-hand). Once you have the items to create it, you will need to return to a graveyard to make it using the special fire (blue flame). You will then need to repeat the process to see the invisible ghosts again if you returned from purchasing the items and then hand the quest in to the NPC. You will receive 'Macabre Marionette' as a reward. This is a summon-able pet that is not learn-able, but instead summon-able from your bag and will disappear once the event has ended.

It may also be interesting to note that:

Only the Achievement is a Reward You Can Keep.
There is no required level or cooking level.
Apparently the NPC Chapman is supposed to be a link to a Monty Python person.
