I was unable to complete this as a hunter in current build 4.0.3.13117. I defeat them numerous times but no credit. Could be one of those issues common with pet classes where your pet can't help or make the kill. I put my pet on passive the final 10% to make sure I got the kill but no luck.

As a hunter i was able to complete this by dismissing my pet and using traps, concussive shot and wing clip to keep at range. Don't move too far away from the duel flag tho, or it will be canceled.

another way for hunters to complete this q is to dismiss your pet before you win over the gryphon rider

not sure how this affects other pet classes

Confirmed: The workaround for the bug that prevents hunters from completing this quest is to dismiss your pet before starting.

If you dismiss your pet you will receive credit.

This is still an issue with the live version, currently. I had to dismiss my pet eventually to get it to complete properly; I felt like I was in the Benny Hill show running from the damn mob.

This is easy for a hunter. Use your pet to fight, when they're nearly defeated, dismiss your pet and fight the rest by hand. If you keep your pet out you will not be able to complete the quest. Possibly the same for all other pet users.

hard for a hunter who has never melee'd... but i kept my pet out and on passive, and followed comments above, meaning, traps, concussive, wingclip, and of course, the jumpshot FTW!

Same issue of not being able to complete the quest as a priest when using shadowfiend. Completion was possible without using the little critter.

confirmed this is not just hunter. this happened to me on my lock. so before i started the duel i put pet on passive and didnt let him fight. quest complete.

so i dont know about hunters but for lock at least you dont need to dismiss just passive and dont let it fight.

As a lock, do not fear these guys unless you are glyphed, as they will run far enough to be out of range and despawn.

I am a hunter and this quest was bugged for me. To get credit I had to dismiss my pet and kite the mob.

you can summon your pet in the middle of the fight and use it. i did and completed the quest

Yup, it works THIS way!

USE your pet - UNTIL you have the Gryphon Rider down to about 25% health - then, promptly DISMISS your pet and KEEP wailing on the dude!

Once he is DOWN to about 10% health the 'duel' is over - and YOU WIN!

Just REMEMBER: DISMISS your PET once the Rider is down to 25%...

Easily done and completed by a level 84 Holy Paladin. I'm guessing melee classes shouldn't have any problems with this quest.

Wish I'd ready these posts first before dueling every dwarf there, abandoning and picking up the quest a dozen times, logging out of the game, and rebooting my machine. Dismissed my pet and died twice trying to do this w/o my faithful wolf. I then sortta cheated and asked one of my healer friends to keep me alive while I fought. Since we were grouped, not only did I complete the quest, but my friend got credit for it too, though she never hit the NPC. AND, once this quest is completed it opens more quests in the zone.

putting yer pet on passive and kiting worked too..not sure about letting yer pet stay on guy first and then putting him on passive..but I know putting him on passive to begin with worked and I got the quest completed

Did this on my hunter and we both died at the same time. I got credit for quest but..WTF? I thought it was a DUEL. I actually died and took armor damage. That has to be a bug.

If you're wondering where the Mullan Gryphon Rider actually is... he's right behind the quest giver. I searched up, down and sideways with humanoid tracking for a hostile gryphon rider, but he's actually neutral. There's nothing discernible about him, but you're able to talk to him.

If you're a hunter, don't bother faffin about kitin' the ryder,
set ya pet to passive
challenge the ryder
set pet to attack and take aggro
ranged dps down to about 20/30%
dismiss pet
melee dps to defeat
Pick up credit - job done!
Have fun.

as a hunter start with your pet and drop your traps start the duel take a few steps back let the pet beat him down when he is at 33% dismiss your pet and you can finish him and get credit

thank to all who told of the dismiss pet when the rider is at 25% health it was the only way i was able to beat him as a unexpereinced at kiting hunter

Confirmed: You can use your pet as a hunter. I just did this and dismissed pet at about 50% damage. I still got credit for the win.

Confirmed that if you dismiss your pet before the fight ends, you'll get credit!

It seems that if an entity other than the player damages the dueling mob, you don't get credit, so Fire Mages, switch off your Molten Armor. Worked for me.

I just did this quest on my Hunter... I won't QQ about why I hated it, but when I dismissed my pet, the dwarf I was fighting pulled an EVADE and full-healed as a result. Just another thing that can happen in this quest.

I sent in a petition to a gm to understand why we need to dismiss our pets as hunters or not use them at all.

Apparently its a bug in the quest and they are trying on solving it as soon as possible. So for anyone who hasn't been able to do it with no pets or didn't get any credits, just hang in there. Hopefully it will be solved quickly.

Keeping your pet on passive works as well, too. I didn't have to dismiss him to get credit, he just couldn't participate in the fight. I didn't try the get-him-down-to-25%-before-dismissal route, but I imagine it probably works similarly; have your pet out and attacking until that point then just set it to passive.

I had a problem completing this as a protection warrior, too.
Looks like the quest bugs if the rider is stunned, disarmed or fleeing when he hits that 10% mark.

Any hunter with this quest has Aspect of the Fox.

Just dismiss your pet and kite the guy. Between Concussive Shot, Wing Clip, Disengage, and Ice Trap kiting this guy is a joke. It's never been easier for a hunter to kite, hell I'm Marksman so my Chimera Shot dazes, too.

I had the same issues as every other hunter has, i tried dismissing pet and didnt use snaketraps, tried kiting him, but as soon as he runs more than 20yards he declares himself the winner lazy doorf that he is, also, dont be in a party with members being around you, for some reason it bugs for that also

I had a hard time doing this as a feral druid. Pop barkskin halfway through, backup when you have full DOTs on him, and switch to bear at 25% health and do frenzied regen. That should allow you to survive long enough to get him to 10%

When you start the duel, the Mullan Gryphon Rider says

"Now THEM's fightin words!"

Considering the several other Yosemite Sam references in the area, I'd add this one to the list.

As a Hunter, I was able to dismiss my pet, challenge the Mullan Gyphon Rider, start fighting him, hen summon my pet, let pet aggro him, then gun him down. Easy peasy. :-D

I chose the Gryphon rider at the small stand of trees a few steps behind Duglas Mullan, left my tiger out , started the fight , shot the rider while my tiger smacked it and next thing I see is the Gryphon rider stating I won.

as a rogue quest was bugged for me two times.then i dropped quest and take it again.while fighting i wanted to be sure ,and i dropped my companion too.try the quest again with no companion .

As a fire mage, I wasn't able to complete it either. Read some comments and noticed the one about stunning. So I didn't use my procced fireblast and was able to complete it.

I still had molten armor on so I think the issue is with stuns.

Took me 3 tries to get this on my rogue, eventually resorted to not stunning the mob during the fight and got the win at last.
