This quest is very hard. Unfortunately I don't know how to beat them. I've tried melee & Shield, Ranged & Shield, Charge & Shield, and a bunch more combination's. Still can't seem to defeat one. The closets I got to defeating one was a Gnome Valiant using Melee,Ranged,Shield Hybrid Approach and got him down too 2% >_<

Ok, these are VERY easy if you know how to do it. First get your shield up to 3 before you even start the fight, then when u start, shield break them down to no shields and try to keep your shield at 3 at all times. When they have no sheild you melee them or charge them whatever you want, but charge seems to do more damage. When they have shields up, you get out of melee range, and try not to let them charge you and concentrate on getting their shield off them and keeping yours up. Dont even bother attacking until their shields are down. If they have sheilds equal or greater than yours, they will beat you every time. Trick is to get the shields down, then melee/charge them.

Best time to attack is when they have no shields and you have 2 or 3. They go down quick then.

Took me a few tries but I think I got it down.

Before you engage, make sure to get your 3 charges of Defend up.
When you initiate the fight, I spammed on Thrust to get a bit of a head start since they won't have any shields up, or they might get 1 off but it'll still do a fair amount of damage.
From then on I just started kiting them around and keeping out of range to the best of my ability while making sure to keep 3 stacks of Defend up if possible. I felt I had to do a lot of jump shots with Shield-Breaker while running away.
An awesome source of damage I did was when the Valiant had only 1 or no shields up and I would Charge the rider and immediately Thrust . They would be very vulnerable to damage and it knocked quite a bit of hp off.

I have found a really easy way to do this myself, and thought I would share.

First you get 3 stacks of Defend like the others have mentioned.
The Valiant will start walking off the direction it was facing before you talked to it. Start pressing Charge immediately to hit it in the back! XD
The instant you Charge start pressing Shield-Breaker. You can hit them with this ability almost instantly, since your mount will be running a quick circle to face your target. They should now only have 0 shields up right at the start of the fight before they even touch you!
Now just stand on top of of the Valiant and keep using the Thrust ability, and keep your Defend stacked to 3.
When the Valiant starts to walk away start spamming Charge followed up with the Shield-Breaker like mentioned above. You should be able to kill the Valiant within 30-45 seconds this way.

Also if you are going for the Lance a Lot achievement, you can get it on the first day as long as you don't turn in the quest.

Me and my friend partied up to do these quests faster, and after each of us struggling at each end to down the valiant's we discovered that if one of us stayed unmounted, you can actually attack the one the other one is duelling, making the whole quest and achievement a lot easier. Don't know if it's a bug, or if it's supposed to be that way tho. Just keep shield-breaker up, and defend on yourself, and let your friend attack the mob. We downed them all in no time!

ok this is not an easy quest, but its just matter of practice. All steps are stated above, but most important thing here is timming and keeping distance when required

Yes everyone can attack the valiants, and this makes this quest easier. I suggest, that IF you still fail the duel after reading the instructions above (like me ;> ), you get a friend to help.

If you're a mage and for some reason want to challenge a rider from the same city twice in one hour, you can ice block out of the debuffs that prevent this.

edit: This information is now pretty much irrelevant since the buffs only last for 5 minutes.

as i do it , get 3 stacks of shield, accept the fight, charge asap and try using melee swing too, then run away, refresh ur shield every cd even if it means you gotta wait with charge, sometimes break his/her shield, better to fight longer than risky w/o shield, i didn't fail this tactic yet.

Gaurenteed way to win (assuming no disconects or unforseen glitches)

First off, forget the combo training you did, the comp is often faster cause of ping. Its very unreliable and often just gets you killed. If you try for it, the computer will just do it to you and you will be in a bad way

Start the fight with 3 stacks of Defense
Melee him till he moves to range
Charge his rear
melee till he moves to range again
Repete till victory

Only refresh defense while in melee range, as it shares a cooldown with your ranged attacks, but not your melee. If its on CD when he moves to range, you will be combod and very likely lose

So it appears that the secret to winning this is to forget every preconception of jousting.

1. Start with 3 shields, naturally.
2. When your opponent accepts your challenge, he'll attempt to ride out into position. Don't let him. Immediately start beating him about the head and shoulders with your lance. (Thrust)
3. When he tries to get to range to charge, throw a spear at his back. (Shieldbreaker)
4. Immediately follow that up by closing with him and beating on him again. (More Thrust.)
5. Hurray for honorable combat!

Be sure to keep your shields up. If you're a bit slow on closing, your opponent will get off a charge; try to stay on top of him. The best time to refresh your shields is right after you close with him. Either he'll get lucky and tag you as you close, in which case you need the refresh, or it'll give your shields time to recharge before he pulls away for another charge.

OK maybe this is bugged for me, but I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent player and using the techniques above I can only get the Valiant to about 80% before I go down. This is even more infuriating than the Storm Giant riding quest in Zul'drak.

For those people, like me, that are really having a hard time with this, try adapting the strategies above. Start off as usual with full shields, and then with a charge and shield break as usual. But after that, stay on him and spam thrust- every time he goes to ride away, dont bother with the spear throw or charge, just keep on his tail and keep spaming thrust!

It takes ages but you should outlast him, though just barely. It's the only way I could find to beat 3 of these guys (especially as my latency usually hovers around 600ms)

One thing I did notice... is that it's almost pointless to try to flank the opponent. The A.I. does enough moving on it's own that you get the range when you need it, to throw the shield breaker. Just keep yourself facing the challenger, shield up at all times (always 3 stacks) and fit in a charge whenever possible, but focus on melee attacks 100% when he is close enough.

Though the computer doesn't precisely cheat, they suffer no latency issues and seemingly have no cooldown on any ability other than Thrust. If you attempt to defeat them as one might actually imagine a jousting contest should go (getting distance and charging repeatedly, trying to keep up your guard), you will likely lose. They can put up a full stack of defend in perhaps a little more than a single GCD, and they can also chuck three shield breakers at you just as fast.

The moral of the story is, as other posters have said, be a thug. Get on top of the guy and smack him with your lance ad nauseam. Charge him in the back when he tries to get distance.

I did the first couple of daily Melee quests by charging and shield breaking, and it was frequently a very close call. The last couple days, however, I simply get destroyed if I try to get distance and fight with "chivalry."

Just smack the guy cross-eyed and charge whenever he tries to get distance. It'll take a long time, particularly considering how fast he'll restore his shield after a charge so you'll be doing maybe 400 damage a hit, but you won't lose either. Saves you time in the long run.

Duels with other players are infinitely more fair than the computer, as you have the same cooldowns. Treat the NPCs like cheaters and give no quarter.

My strat

1. Start stacked (3 stacks of shield up which reduces 90% damage)
2. Hit them with range attack (2) to keep their shield off.
3. Then keep just inside of charge range and kite them around. The NPC keeps trying to position for a charge but don't give them a chance.
4. Move in and out of melee range spamming 1 melee ,2 range,1 ,2 ,1 (and 4 to refresh your shield if needed)

I with this technique find I finish with 90% health.

do you have to do this quest?

i have big problems with this one and i can't figure out what i'm doing wrong efter 10 seconds in the fight i have 10% health or lower
the guy hit me so hard and i do no damage on him

i have tried all the advice i get on this page but nothing seems to help

I have found the easiest one to take on is the Sen'jin Valiant. Keeping my shields up and trying to stay back until his shields fall worked fine. Shield Break worked and then I charged/thrust until he was defeated.

I took on the Silvermoon Valiant next since I'm a blood elf. Again the keeping my shields up, using shield break and then move in when the shields drop with Charge worked well.

Since you can't take on any of them more than once when you win I have to figure out which one I'm going to take on. So I took on Undercity Valiant which seemed to be easier to stay away from. They seem to like to either stay real close to you or get far enough away to charge.

I also got far enough away to charge then would hit shield break to get the most damage possible. The big issues seems to be charging just as soon as you see the shields go down and not letting up.

You can complete this quest while in a raid (and probably before picking it up) since the items you need are generated upon defeating the opponents, instead of being looted.

Here's another method for defeating them I worked out after getting my butt kicked several times. As mentioned above, make sure you have full shields before challenging whichever one you want. Stand behind them and spam charge to get that initial hit in. After the initial hit, stay as close to them as you can and just keep spamming melee. Renew your shield from time to time just to keep it full. When they turn around and start walking away, throw a shield break as soon as it is in range, then rush back into melee with them. Worked like a charm for me. Once I tried this, got my 3 kills in a row no problem.

As others have said, jousting against the NPCs seems incredibly tough. I logged in early one morning to start The Grand Melee. I was surprised at how quickly I was beaten, trying to use the Shield-Breaker, followed by a Charge. I kept at it, jumping and spinning, trying to time my Charges perfectly while monitoring my Defend charges. After barely defeating an Exodar Valiant, I watched (incredulously) as another player entered the ring and defeated one of the valiants with 90% of his health to spare, hardly moving at all. Certainly, I was going about the fight in the wrong way. If you're constantly losing, you're probably doing TOO much work. Don't feel bad!

Strategy: Most of the time you can be standing still, facing your opponent and using Thrust. Every so often, they will turn around and run away. Let them run, the cowards! Start mashing Charge. As you trample through them, you should wheel yourself around to face them as quickly as possible. Check your Defend charges (refresh if needed) and keep on hitting them with Thrust until they turn to run again. Repeat until you get your Mark of the Valiant.

If you're quick, you may be able to toss a Shield-Breaker after the Charge, but that's a secondary concern; You want to avoid their abilities that cause you to lose your own defenses, since their cool-downs appear to be different from our own. Often, I've only have to refresh 2-3 times during my sucessful fights. My latency hovered around 500. I have NOT been able to beat the Valiant with 90% health to spare. However, a victory is a victory, right? If you're having trouble, try going slower and being more cautious; This fight does NOT need to test your reflexes.

I have to say too that this is the most annoying quest is in WoW so far.
Above hints helped me a lot, but there was one thing i couldn't find above and is very handy to know, that is that you can use thrust, shieldbreaker and Defend at the same time.
So what i do is, once i did the stuff from above like, do the 3 defend buff and standing from behind him, gonna charge him and keep following him and push those 3 buttons at the same time.
I like thrust more then charge because i have my eye on him
I just want to share this with you guys.

The rep reward from this (and other valiant quests) is actually 62 rep with all horde factions other than the one you take the quest with, 250 for the horde faction the quest is from and 250 for the Sunreavers.

For example: If you complete this quest as a valiant of Thunderbluff, you'll receive:

250 rep with Thunderbluff
250 rep with Sunreavers
and
62 rep with Undercity, Silvermoon, Darkspear Trolls, and Orgrimmar

Note that while I did not receive any in-game notification of the rest of the reputation gains, checking my rep bars before and afterwards it is clear that you do actually receive them. Completing all 4 dailies will award you 1000 rep with each of Sunreavers and Thunderbluff and 250 rep with all other horde factions.

For a single seal, this quest isn't worth the time and frustration involved. Save yourself the trouble and only do the other dailies. If it were two seals for the reward, then maybe. Maybe. But oh well.

The only person I know who does this quest on a regular basis says to don't bother with the spear and charge attacks; they can't be done with any latency, and (after 4 years of mounts which can pivot) riding a mount with a slow turning radius is no end of frustration. Just stand still and alternate the melee attack with the stacking shield. (I can't confirm or deny it personally, as I don't bother. Scripted quest events get one chance to be fun, if they fail the test, screw 'em. I have better things to do with my game time.)

This is my variation on completing the daily quest.

1 - Build up your shields to max before each challenge.

2 - The NPC will frequently begin the game with no shields or just one red shield.

3 - Stay right on top of them. Keep hitting them with the Thrust maneuver.

4 - Once they move away to gain range. Hit Charge, the resulting hit will damage their shields badly.

5- Many times I discovered that after a charge there was a nice amount of room for me to quickly turn around and throw a shield break then just travel a few steps to use thrust on a vulnerable NPC.

6- If you discover that your shields were taken down after the charge, don't throw the shield break, renew your shields instead. Most times, you won't have to.

6 - Keep repeating.

Does anyone know how it decides the damage you do from your thrusts? Assuming everything else being equal, i.e. number of shields your opponent has, my paladin and priest do more than twice the amount of damage as my hunter. I would have thought the damage for jousting would all be the same, and it isn't tied to strength, agility or attack power as my priest has very little.

Word of advice to hunters - don't challenge the Valiants with Aspect of the Viper up! I couldn't work out why I was finding it so difficult, realised I had AotV on, took if off and then beat them easily >_>

Ok, my way worked every time....for me....

a - Hit Defend (#4) x 3 to get your shields up. Throughout the battle, try to keep the # of shields up at 2 or 3.

b - Stand behind the Valiant and start the battle by clicking on it and "talking".

c - The Valiant will ride away preparatory to charging you. Let it. As soon as #2 (Shield-breaker) can be fired (note that the "2" turns white) hit #2. Sometimes you can hit it twice before he gets to you.

d - As soon as the Valiant charges you, renew your shield by hitting #4 (Defend) and then #1(Thrust). Spam #1 while it is in melee range.

e - when it rides away, repeat (c) and when it closes in on its charge, repeat (d). Note that you may have to swivel to face it, but don't bother riding away from the "challenge" spot.

DO NOT TRY TO CHARGE. The only time I failed was when I tried to charge... the cooldowns just do not work right.

I've found the easiest way is to combine these.
1) shields up to 3.
2) Whack him with thrusts.
3) He'll start walking away to charge -- let him get to range of shield break and hit once. You can run after him and shield break will still hit him.
4) Continue to whack and repeat.

It takes a bit of time but this seems to be the best way for me.

so if you want, just do the duels for all the marks in one day and you can pick them at the bank later.

Just did this one- I finally succeeded in winning by spamming thrust until he backs away, then giving myself just enough space to get in a shieldbreaker, then rush him continue thrusting,, keeping my shields up the whole time, of course. Going toe-to-toe with him makes little sense if any. Keep at least one shieldbreaker on him and you'll have the upper hand this way.

For those of you that suck on ice, like I do...

Stack your shield to 3 before you start (obviously). Take two fingers. Put them on keys 1 & 2. Put your other hand on your mouse. Challenge your opponent.

When the fight starts, began rapidly hitting keys 1 & 2 over and over again. Stick to your opponent like glue. Don't give him even an inch to breathe. Follow him everywhere. If you give him any room at all, just make it a few feet to get in the occasional Shield Breaker. When necessary, repair your shield. If he starts to wander too far from the field, just back up a little to lure him back in. Charging is not even necessary.

This probably won't help if you just have latency issues, but if you just suck at jousting it works. I was running around and charging and trying to throw Shield Breakers from halfway across the field like I saw the people who are good at jousting doing and I was losing every fight. When I started sticking to my opponent like glue and spamming Thrust/Shield Breaker, I started winning every fight.

The downside is that it's a bit slow and it'll make your arm ache after a few matches.

This what a lot easier then I expected.
Since lots of people seem to have trouble here's how I did it:

Stack your defend to 3 at the start ofcourse, before even beginning.
As soon as it starts, they will begin to try to get to charge range, start spamming charge.
Once you've charged them, just sit there and thrust, don't worry about their shields (They'll never get it above 2)
Once they start trying to get to charge range again just start spamming charge.
Just continue doing this, you don't have to worry about your shields at all, I never lost one stack and lost no less then 10k health in the battle.
Should take about a minute to do this but it's very simple :)

JOUSTING FOR DUMMIES

Starting sequence
1. Charge your shields up to 3.
2. Go BEHIND your target valiant and talk to him. He will turn around to face you.
3. Start the joust. He will turn back around and proceed to the center of the ring.
4. BEFORE he gets away from you on his way to the center of the ring, press 1.
5. Watch the #2 button...when it becomes usable (when he's far enough away) press it.

Standard sequence
1. When the valiant moves close to you, press 1, then press 4. Repeat.
2. If the valiant moves away from you, press 2 when it becomes available, and then press 4.
3. When 3 becomes available, press it and then press 4.

NOTE: You do NOT have to wait until the valiant has no shields before you press 3. You damage him the most if you do, but you don't have to wait that long. 1 shield or even 2 shields will knock him down a peg or two.

NOTE: Always keep your shields up to at least 2, preferably 3.

Anyone coming here in 2023 looking to see how this quest is done... ignore the comments below. This quest is pretty easy by today's standards - Keep up your shields, assuming you don't have latency you have enough time to shieldbreaker > charge before the valiant is done walking towards the middle, and then you just spam 1 until it runs away again. Shieldbreaker > charge > shieldbreaker, spam thrust. You almost never lose any HP.

2, 3, 2, 1 (spam until they walk away), 2, 3, 2, 1 (spam until dead). The biggest thing I guess is just hoping you don't have any random lag spikes, but you shouldn't in most cases.
Never skip the jousting quests. Easy money, easy seals.
