Formely called Lord Anthrycist, he was renamed to Rhyloith. Blizzard gave no reason for the rename, but it was likely they felt "Anthricyst" sounded too much like "Antichrist" and could have been deemed offensive.
Also, I find the name sounds a lot like R'lyeh, Cthulhu's resting place (and it wouldn't be the first Cthulhu reference), but then again, every name doesn't have to be a reference to something :)
Edit: Serpsensium's suggestion, two posts beneath mine, sounds pretty convincing.

Kudos to him for his knowledge in geology!

does the 3d view of this guy remind anyone else of the yellow devil from megaman?

Interestingly, Rhyolite is an igneous rock that forms extremely viscous lava. So a fitting name for this slow moving boss.

This boss is untankable until P2 at 25%, & has 80 stacks of
黑曜石护甲
at the pull. He pulls as soon as anyone crosses his little lava bridge.
Obsidian Armor is removed by steering him over active volcanos (the active ones have fire at the top of them). These volcanos spawn when he does his stomp. Once active they'll do damage to random raid members. They'll also spawn trails of lava across Rhyolith's island. Don't stand in it, it'll kill you.
He's steerable by attacking either of his feet. Left foot turns him left, Right foot turns him right. Put your melee on the legs. Don't let him get to the edge of the island or he'll drink the lava & wipe the raid.
Keep your ranged stacked & focused on the adds. Make sure they're always 20 yards away from Rhyolith to avoid the knockback from his stomp.
He'll spawn 2 types of adds every so often, 5 small ones, or 1 big one. Both can & should be tanked.
The smalls ones need to die within 30 seconds or they'll inflict damage equal to their remaining health to a random raid member.
The big ones do an AoE pulse from themselves constantly, & so need to be tanked away from everyone. They gain a stacking buff that increases both their damage done & damage taken. They need to go down quickly or the tank will start hurting.
He can be one tanked, but it may be easier with two tanks, as I found that there were times when I could not pick up the small adds from within the ranged pile because I had the big guy on me & so could not move to them.
At 25%, his armor will fall off & he'll sit & sulk for a few seconds. The tank needs to get aggro on him (he's tauntable), & it's then just a simple tank & spank with a small amount of pulsing AoE damage.
He also has the best voice ever.

How many dps must be assigned for steering? We've tried two, but that was not enough.
Someone knows steering mechanics? Is he steered by sheer damage or by number of hits? Does 2 dps attacking right legs get the same result as 3 on right and 1 on left?

The fight starts when players cross the bridge onto Rhyolith's platform. When engaged he does not need tanked as rather than attack players directly he begins walking in a straight line from one end of the platform to the other. Players need to steer the boss by attacking either his Left Leg or Right Leg, both of which are targetable. Attacking the Left Leg makes the boss turn left and attacking the Right Leg makes the boss turn right. If Rhyolith reaches the edge of his platform he drinks from the lava surrounding it and kills everyone.
Phase 1
During the course of the first phase Rhyolith stomps on the ground, inflicting fire damage to everyone and knocking back players within 20 yards. The stomps also spawn two to three little volcanoes around the platform, which are activated over the course of the fight. When a volcano is active it does a small amount of unavoidable damage to random players, also randomly stacking a debuff on your raid that increases your fire damage taken. This debuff can stack up to 20 times. Your dps must attack Rhyolith's legs in order to force him to walk over these active volcanoes, which will cause them to become craters. Once a volcano becomes a crater it stops causing fire damage and applying debuffs to players, and it also reduces Rhyolith's stacks of Obsidian Armor by 10. The lower his stacks of Obsidian Armor, the more damage Rhyolith takes.
When the boss is marched over a volcano there is a chance that he will cause lines of lava to blossom from it in multiple directions. If you are in the path of a line of lava as it grows you will take a large amount of damage. When the lines have finished growing they explode, which will also cause a large amount of damage and throw your character into the air.
Also throughout the first phase of the fight Rhyolith will summon adds to help him. There are two different types; small adds and large adds. The small adds, Fragments of Rhyolith, have fairly low health, but are also quite dangerous. If not killed within 30 seconds, these adds will explode, doing damage equal to the amount of health they have left to a random player. They spawn in groups. The large adds, Sparks of Rhyolith, do an AoE fire attack similar to a warlock's Hellfire. They also have a buff that increases the damage the Sparks give and receive, making them more dangerous as time goes on, but also easier to kill. These adds spawn one at a time.
Tactic
The tactic we used (in 10 man) was to put two melee (rogue and warrior) on the legs full time, with one of them calling out on Vent which leg to attack. With one person in charge of where to steer the boss the volcanoes become a lot easier to get rid of. We used only one (bear) tank for the encounter, having him tank the Fragments in the first phase, and had two ranged take care of the Sparks (hunter and warlock), the hunter kiting the Spark away from the rest of the raid.
When only one volcano was active the healing was pretty easy, but if a second volcano popped up before the stacks from the previous volcano dropped off, the healing became much harder. The rest of the dps attacked the legs as directed and helped on the Fragments when they spawned.
Having the ranged stack up together helped with the healing, and it also made it easier for the tank to pick up the Fragments, as they mostly went for the healers just after spawning. Just make sure that if you do stack your raid up that everyone stays over 20 yards away from Rhyolith; a knockback from the stomp at the wrong time could leave you standing on top of a line of lava that's about to explode.
Phase 2
Rhyolith needs to be picked up by the tank and the last 25% of his health burned off. Save Bloodlust/Heroism and some personal cooldowns for this phase, stack the raid up away from the boss to avoid the stomp and help with the healing and cycle through raid wide healing/defensive cooldowns to make it to the finish line.

You can tell which crater will spawn magma streams actually. Just look for a pillar rising out of the craters left by Lord Rhyolith! Those signify where the magma streams will come from!

Strategy Guide & Video:
Below I have written a guide as well as demonstrate how we did this boss.
Our Group:
2 Tank - | Druid | DK |
3 Healers - | Paladin | Shaman | Priest |
5 DPS - | SPriest | Mage | Hunter | Death Knight | Rogue |
General Boss Information:
Lord Rhyolith is a gigantic spawn of a volcanic eruption that walks around his arena trying to reach magma to drink from it and spew onto the raid for a wipe.
Since he is so large, you are only able to attack his legs... AKA the whole mechanic of this fight.
This is a 2 phase encounter.
---Phase 1:
You will engage Rhyolith as soon as you step onto his platform, be careful not to do so prematurely.
Once engaged, he will begin to walk in a straight line to the edge of his platform in order to
Drink Magma
, resulting in a raid wipe.
He will continue to walk throughout the entirety of Phase 1. In order to deal with this you will need to have DPS on either of his legs to turn him away from the edge and direct him to an active volcano.
The speed of his legs is determined by the amount of
CONSISTENT
DPS on it. The more DPS you have, the
SLOWER
that leg will move.
The reason you want to direct him over an active volcano is due to his
Obsidian Armor
, which reduces the amount of damage he takes, and also because each volcano casts
Eruption
every 2 seconds that will hit 3 raid members each time. This will quickly overrun your healers.
He starts with 80% armor and each active volcano he crushes will reduce this by 10%.
You want to be careful not to stomp out too many volcanoes because each crushed volcano leaves a
Crater
behind. Each crater can periodically cause a
Magma Flow
outward from it that deals moderate fire damage. (Really bad with stacks of Eruption)
Alongside all of this he will spawn adds that need to be killed. It will either be 5
Fragments of Rhyolith
, which if not killed within 30 seconds will charge random raid members and deal damage equal to the amount of health they have remaining. If not the Fragments, it will be a
Spark of Rhyolith
, which deals ~7.5k damage every second to players within 12 yards. It also has a stacking buff that increases its damage done and damage taken by 10% per stack. Up to 20.
Finally he occasionally casts
Concussive Stomp
which deals moderate fire damage and knocks nearby players back. This is
UNAVOIDABLE
by jumping. (You can resist however)
---Phase 2:
Phase 2 starts as soon as Rhyolith's legs hit 25%
Once this phase starts, he will lose all of his armor, allowing him to be tanked and damaged.
This is basically a burn phase... Pop lust at the start here, chain healer and tank CDs and bring him down.
He will, however, cause
Immolation
, which deals fire damage every second and places a debuff on each player causing him to take additional damage. This stacks.
Tips:
We used our 2 melee on the legs at all times, with ALL DPS switching at hard turn times. (We killed pre-nerf)
Make sure you tank the adds and kill them in reasonable time.
This is all about execution, just practice and get the turning down pat and you'll have your kill shortly after.
I wish you the best of luck, and feel free to critique my post and ask any questions.
Please uprate if this helped at all!

Merge this guy with
雷奥利斯领主
plux?
Somehow he has 2 entries in wowhead, making all his items seem like Zone Drop since they drop from 2 "different" Rhyoliths.
Note that ALL the collected loot data from the wowhead client registers at the link i posted, while this site has the most comments, and is Wowhead's official Rhyolith site.

Differences in Heroic:
Everytime an active volcano is stomped, 10 obsidium adds spawn from outside the platform and slowly converge onto him. Each obsidium add that reaches him gives him back one stack of armor.
Much higher damage from active volcanoes staying up for too long. Stomp is much more deadly.
The biggest kicker is that after being active for 5 minutes, he will start to gain the "Superheated" buff. This is a stackable buff that increases his fire damage by 10% per stack, starting with one stack and gaining a new stack every 10 seconds. Thus this makes the fight a soft enrage.
Phase two, he also has 3 fire beams circling the platform. They can be avoided pretty easily but they can move pretty fast. They are very similar to Yogg beams, you need to avoid them.
Tactics:
The superheated buff is the big kicker here. If the boss has too many of this buff heading into P2, it will be a wipe because the damage will be way too high.
First off, split up your DPS accordingly. You need to target the obsidiums as they spawn along with the other adds. Fragments can and should be gathered up and AoEd over as many obsidiums as possible. Try to prevent obsidiums from reaching the boss, but in reality (at least in 10m), there's no way you can kill them all. knockbacks also work on them.
At some point in the fight, you pretty much need to drop what you are doing and focus on the boss, pushing him to Phase 2 before Superheated. This should happen around 20-30 stacks of armor (hopefully lower), and 50-60% health (hopefully lower). All DPS focus on one leg, tank any leftover sparks, and just burn burn burn to Phase 2. You need to find a good time of when actually to burn and it'll depend on your raid. Some tips, you need to make sure the fragments have recently died, an active volcano has recently been stomped, and you need to do it sooner rather than later.
Assuming all goes well (this is assuming good Volcano RNG, which always won't happen), he'll push to P2. Bloodlust if you haven't already, and go nuts with damage reducing cooldown. Use immunities during stomps. Put damage reducing abilities on the tank (he'll take a crapload of damage). Dodge beams. Healthstones. DPS potions. Live live live, and burn.
Good luck to you guys, this fight is frustrating mostly because of the bad RNG that can sometimes happen with Volcanoes, if one is too far away, or if you accidently miss one barely when turning, it's usually a wipe because having two active volcanoes up at the same time = too much damage and you're wasting too much time with extra armor stacks up meaning you'll reach Superheated sooner rather than later
