Welcome to Wowhead's Combat Rogue DPS PvE Class Overview guide for Cataclysm Classic! This guide will help you improve at your class and role, improving your knowledge to face the hardest Dungeons and Raids from Cataclysm Classic.
Throughout this guide, we will cover many different aspects to increase your Combat Rogue expertise, including concepts like talents and talents builds, BiS gear choices, stat priorities, consumables, gems, enchants, among many other aspects of your class and specialization. Make sure to navigate to other pages of the guide to find more in-depth information, as each works as a knowledge hub for their subject.
Class Overview for Combat Rogue DPS
The Rogue going into Cataclysm maintains its solid damage profile, slew of defensive cooldowns, and several interrupt/CC abilities. In this guide, we’ll be looking into the slicing and slashing combat rogue and focusing in on the key changes and how this specialization functions in Cataclysm.
New passive talents like

will offer insight into the opponent’s defenses and exploit them to really dish out the damage at key moments in a fight. New active abilities such as

will allow us to move our combo points from one target to another and moving with them, the built up insight that was just mentioned making target switching much less taboo than they have been in the past (looking at you blood beasts).
We continue to offer

, increasing the physical damage taken of any target that you have poisoned to be increased by 4% for the entire raid. This raid buff is much less prevalent in Cataclysm than in Wrath due to Arms Warrior bringing this debuff which every raid will likely have at least one of. That doesn’t take away from our contributions though! Not in the slightest. Combat rogues still bring

to the table and offer very good single target dps as well as exceptional cleave making them very desirable for any cleave based encounters.
How Combat Rogue DPS Changes in Cataclysm Classic
For those that played a rogue in Wrath, you will recognize most of the abilities, with a few new ones sprinkled in and sizable modifications to the overall playstyle and rotation of the Combat Rogue. New talents like

function really kick this spec into overgear.
Stat and Attribute Changes
Agility
- To counter the loss of Attack Power as a stat, we now receive 2 Attack Power per point of Agility instead of 1 as well as the passive 5% Agility from Leather Specialization.
Haste
- In addition to passively increasing our energy regeneration through

, it now also directly increases our energy regeneration. This makes haste a very sought after stat for all rogue specs and especially Combat.
Mastery
- This new damage stat in Cataclysm comes in the form of

and will occasionally grant rogues an extra attack.
Changes to existing Abilities & Talents

have all been removed, taking away the focus/limitations on certain weapon types.

- This talent is removed entirely in Cataclysm forcing the rogue to shift gems and reforges around to meet the important expertise cap.

- Anesthetic Poison has been removed and Shiv now automatically dispels all enrage effects on the target.

- Now offers 1 additional percent of hit bringing it to 6% and changing it to a 3 point talent.

- Reduces energy cost by 6 and now increases the damage of Sinister Strike by 30%.

- This is now a toggleable ability with a 10s cooldown! Gone are the days of waiting for the perfect time to pop your Blade Flurry. Anytime you are able to hit 2 mobs, this should be toggled on. The Attack Speed portion of this spell has been moved and will now reduce energy regeneration by 30%, reduced to a 15% penalty when glyphed.

- This is where the 20% attack speed from Blade Flurry went. So not only will this increase your raw regeneration rate by 100%, it will also passively increase it through Combat Potency procs. Once this ability is popped, you will find that you have a hard time trying to not cap your energy despite how much you’re wearing down that poor Sinister Strike key.

- While this ability hasn't changed in any significant way, the talent

, has. In a world where combat rogues value more finishers to reset CDs, gouge becomes a core part of our rotation. This is accomplished by putting 2 points in to

and using

to remove its positional requirement. You now have a 15 energy combo point which is extremely valuable. This is currently simming at a 500 DPS increase making it well worth it. *
It is important to note that in a situation where you are having a hard time with energy capping (during lust and

) you continue your regular rotation without

. The benefit is negated when energy starts being wasted

New Abilities & Talents

- was reworked into our new Combat Spec passive

and the damage has ramped up to 75% from 50%.

- This talent was reworked into our other Combat Spec passive

and also gives us a flat 30% boost to attack power.

- This is the Combat Rogue’s Mastery for Cataclysm. When attacking with your main hand, you have a 16% chance to deal an additional hit equal to 100% of a main hand attack. For every point of mastery, you will gain an additional 2% chance to trigger this effect.

- This talent will make it so that all of our damaging finishers will reduce the cooldown on

by 2s per combo point spent. While we do still remain a spec that relies on efficient use of our cooldowns, this talent makes their effective CDs much shorter giving us the liberty to use them more freely knowing that they will reset faster than they have in the past. A skilled rogue will utilize this talent to its fullest ensuring they have their big CDs up for when they truly matter in an encounter.

- This is a new builder ability that increases the damage of our next finishing move within 15s by 35%. You will be aiming to have this up for every finisher, but if for example you Sinister Strike at 3 combo points and the glyph procs taking you to 5, you would just use the finisher without RvS up. Reason for this ties into Restless Blades and the fact that you would rather spend that energy towards another finisher than to increase the damage of one Eviscerate. It is likely worth it to use RvS between 0-4 combo points due to the new

tech previously mentioned.

- This is our new utility finisher which restores 3% of maximum HP every 3s with the duration being increased based on how many combo points were put into it. As a combat rogue, we will usually have this talented, increasing the HP restored by 1% and reducing damage taken by 6% while the effect is active.

- As mentioned above, this new ability allows us to move our combo points from one target to another. This has the added effect of moving our current level of insight through Bandit’s Guile to a new target. Combat also benefits from having this 1 minute CD reduced by Restless Blades Allowing us to utilize it more frequently than the other specs.

- This new ability will drop a cloud of smoke on top of the rogue and any allies within 8 yards, obscuring the vision of any enemies. This will simply be another way for us to pull casters into the group by placing this on the group and forcing the caster to walk into you. We will certainly see some creative uses of this ability when it comes to raid content, especially encounters with targeted casts that would splash AoE damage.

, we gain an evolving insight into the opponent's defenses. What this essentially means is you start a fight with 0 insight into the target and after 4 SS/RvS you will gain shallow insight, increasing all damage done to that target by 10%. After another 4 builders are used you will advance to moderate insight increasing damage by 20%, and finally deep insight increasing damage by 30%. The shallow and moderate versions last 15s by default and are extended back to 15s with each builder you use until reaching deep insight. Deep insight will always last for 15s and then fade back to 0 insight.
Class Viability for Combat Rogue DPS
Cataclysm is the expansion in which rogues are no longer brought as a 1 of simply to apply

. Rather we are brought almost strictly for our damage,

potential, and our sheer versatility. Rogues are one of four classes that can choose between 3 DPS specializations, covering several different damage profiles. Combat is excellent in any scenario that requires cleave, assassination excels in single target damage as well as mass aoe (though not as strong as its been in the past due to

changes), and Subtlety is also great at single target along with talents like

allowing them to solo certain mechanics that would otherwise require rotating numerous people. The strength of the rogue lies within its versatility to adapt whatever damage profile is needed for a boss as well as its ability to solo troublesome boss mechanics.
To be the most optimal with your rogue in Cataclysm, you will always want to maintain reliable gear and understanding of the Cornbat Specialization as well either Subtlety or Assassination depending on which phase we are in for pure single target fights.
Some fights that you might consider playing combat for in Pre-Patch would be Lady Deathwhisper, Professor Putricide, Valithria, and the Lich King himself. These are fights where the power of Blade Flurry and thus the specialization as a whole will be its most prominent. That said, you can absolutely get away with playing Combat on every fight in pre-patch and still be viable. Some classes and specs are missing key abilities that are obtained after 80 while combat is really only missing

and there are ways to play around not having this ability.
Class Mechanics for Combat Rogue DPS
Energy
Energy is the primary resource for rogues that takes the place of mana, rage, or focus for other classes. By default, your maximum energy is 100 and you regenerate 1 energy every 0.1 seconds for an average of 10 energy per second. Some effects can increase your default energy regeneration like

, and Haste Rating. You will want to do everything in your power to keep energy from capping. Any energy gained after being capped is wasted potential DPS. This will be especially challenging as combat when

and Heroism/Bloodlust are active.
Combo Points
A Rogue’s DPS rotation will consist of “builders” and finishers”. Builders are what you use to gain combo points on the target and finishers are how you spend those combo points for damage or other various effects. You can build up to a maximum of five combo points on a target, and the points are lost if you build points on any other target or use a finisher. Finishers will consume more combo points to increase the effects of the finisher used.

Poisons
The final unique trademark to the rogue is their ability to apply powerful poisons to their weapons, offering various damaging and utility enhancements. In Cataclysm, poison ranks are removed and you will instead have one base rank for each poison that will scale up with you as you level and gain more AP.

Worgen takes the cake for alliance bringing the only true and consistent form of DPS increase being 1% critical hit chance granted by

. Critical hit chance is a rogue's least favorite stat, but when compared to the other options, is the clear winner. They also have a strong sprint-like ability in

which can be used to help close distance on enemies and maintain uptime.
Gnome
Gnomes offer

Dwarf
Dwarves are in the same boat as Humans minus the extra freedom effect. They bring

Night Elf
Night Elves offer no direct damage increase for Combat Rogues. They do offer mediocre avoidance racials such as

Troll
Trolls bring with them a handful of useful racials that will benefit us as a Combat Rogue.

Goblins being the new race for Horde come in with a couple of neat racials that make them a very interesting choice. Combat Rogues love getting as much haste as they possibly can and Goblins benefit this by bringing an additional 1% increase to attack speed with

Best Professions for Combat Rogues
In Cataclysm, most of the professions are very close to one another offering roughly 80 Agility across the board. Rogues will generally want to be some combination of Tailoring, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting.
Engineering
Engineering continues to be unique in the perks that it offers. To start with, you’ll be able to obtain your pre-bis helmet (

) from engineering as per usual with a slight twist this time around. The helm will have 2 new “Cogwheel” slots that you can plug any secondary stat into and gain 208 of that stat. This allows for some powerful customization early on especially when attempting to meet expertise cap. You’ll also be able to utilize
