Welcome to Wowhead's Protection Paladin Tank PvE Class Overview guide for Cataclysm Classic! This guide will help you improve at your class and role, improving your knowledge to face the hardest Dungeons and Raids from Cataclysm Classic.

Class Overview for Protection Paladin Tank
Protection Paladins are shepherds of the weak and defenders of faith as the tanking specialization for

in Cataclysm Classic. Protection Paladins play with the faith wielding, sword swinging, shield bashing archetype of Warcraft and excels in dealing with a lot of enemies at once.
You can expect the Protection Paladin to be excellent dungeon and raid tanks, being capable of both leading a raid team from the front or supporting a co-tank with a very flexible toolkit. However the class as a whole suffers from having some inability to swap between talent specializations on demand as they all require wildly different gear and playstyles. This makes it difficult in doing much other than tanking as a Protection Paladin.

Class Viability for Protection Paladin Tank
Protection Paladins are jack of all trades in Cataclysm, however as the saying goes oftentimes better than a master of one. What we mean by this is that while Paladins are only excelling beyond the norm on a few things, we do everything extremely well. Starting out in phase 1 you can expect Protection Paladins to be taking more damage than the other tanks as we require Mastery to scale our damage reduction. This initial phase of being squishier is perhaps longer than one might be comfortable with as it means we do not actually reach effectively normal potential until Phase 2/Firelands. Despite these drawbacks Protection Paladins do have some areas where we're unmatched in. Chiefly we are the best AoE tanks in the game bar none, continuing the trend of having very good mob management with great threat & DPS on mult-target. Protection Paladins also have a good health pool (but not as good as Druid or DK), good blocking (but not as good as warrior), and decent self healing potential but falling behind Death Knights.
The greatest detriment to Protection Paladins are that we share armor class with the more ubiquitous and recognized Blood Death Knight, who overshadow all other tanks from the getgo in phase 1 with excellent DPS, self-healing and survivability. While you are not directly punishing yourself by playing a Protection Paladin you are likely to play second fiddle if you run a Death Knight, especially while you are still gearing.
All in all you can expect Protection Paladin to be a great workhorse tank spec in Cataclysm easily capable of filling every job dealt to it and able to shift between its roles much easier and much more comfortably than the other tank specs at the cost of being largely worse than the others in their specialized field.
Class Mechanics for Protection Paladin Tank
Holy Power
Holy power is a new resource for Paladins in Cataclysm. Its impact is limited to a few skills though nontheless plays a major role in how you play your character. Holy Power is capped at a maximum of 3 points and are assigned to your character, meaning you are not penalized for target swapping. Holy Power follows the typical builder-spender setup, where you use certain skills to gain Holy Power others to spend them at varying power levels depending on the amount of Holy Power spent. Using a spender skill will consume all your existing Holy Power. As spender skills scale with the amount of power put into them you are advised to always cast these at 3 power. These abilities are very powerful and your management of Holy Power will play a key role in how you perform.

Hands
Hand Spells are typically very powerful short time duration buffs with the caveat that they come with very long cooldowns and can only have one running by the same paladin at any given time on a target. The use of these spells have an immediate impact on the battle space and can dictate the survivability of others, yourself, and prevent wipes.

Due to their very powerful effects relative to the effort it takes to deploy them (they are all instant spells) they are also typically very powerful in PvP. These skills make up a core component of your utility repertoire as a Protection Paladin.
Blessings & Auras
Blessings are the primary long form buffs for

in Cataclysm. These are long form fire and forget buffs that you typically only refresh when someone dies or a wipe occurs.
Auras are passive effects that you constantly provide in an area around your character. Which aura you choose depends on your role and given situation you are put in. Auras range from small beneficial buffs to broad utilitarian effects that can come very handy. Since these effects are persistent and does not require refreshes, it's usually better to have a

provide an useful aura rather than relying on another class to provide the same effect through a totem or buff.

Strengths & Weaknesses for Protection Paladin Tank
Right out the bat, our biggest weakness is also a strength with our ability to block. Baseline blocking an attack reduces the damage you would have taken by 30%.

enables us to accumulate additional block % through Mastery. The goal is to reach Combat Table Coverage (CTC), which is when you have acquired the sum of 102.4% Avoidance (miss+dodge+parry) & block. At this stage every attack that lands on you is mitigated by 30%. However the weak part of this passive is that we require
a lot
of dedicated mastery gear, to the point where you are not expected to reach CTC until at least Firelands.
Paladins retain their potent AoE capabilities in Cataclysm and even expand upon them. Our ability to self sustain is at the cost of a huge chunk of our potential damage, by replacing our seal with

and using Holy Power on

we can amount to a substantial amount of self healing.
We retain a good spread of defensive cooldowns, including a raid-wide CD in
神圣守卫
with the cooldowns lining up so that you can use roughly 3 defensives per minute should you need to. On top of, we retain some of our powerful utility with

自由之手
. Despite that, our extremely strong passive defensives are gone and we now actually have to press buttons proactively.
Protection Paladins also lack specialization before they reach CTC in that while we're good in our own right most other tanks do at least one thing better than us that pertains to surviving and DPSing bosses.

None of the resistance racial passives stack with regular raid buffs that you will nearly always have access to.
The Alliance races are very close in Cataclysm, with access to both a good amount of maces and swords in Cataclysm. For the most part the decision is stylistic, however Human is typically favored in general due to access to multiple weapon specializations and in PvP due to

and in the same vein Dwarf

will see a broader use-case in PvE. Draenei PvE functionality is largely driven by

. Overall the race is roughly on par with the other Alliance choices. There's no outstanding upside to any of these to make any of your choice races straight up superior to another. We would recommend that you start with Human or Draenei as they are the two races with the broadest applicable racials.

The Horde, is awarded their second race eligible to roll Paladin in Cataclysm with the introduction of the Tauren. This race specializes in survivability via

. This is probably the single most impactful race for Paladins in Cataclysm, awarding broadly useful racials. Endurance at level 85 is slated to be worth the equivalent of 150 Stamina and is thus a prime pick for your Protection Paladin needs.
Blood Elves do not gain or change much in Cataclysm,

remains as one of the most powerful area management tool in the game being an AoE silence & interrupt around the player that is not on the GCD. Despite that, we think Blood Elf has fallen behind a little. Tauren provide you with a similar (but critically different) ability in

however their increased health pool makes up for any shortcomings.
Best Professions for Protection Paladin Tank
Phase 1 of Cataclysm is when your professions will matter the most to most players. Typically crafting professions offer one or more items in an item slot that is roughly on par with a raid item. Secondarily many professions offer persistent bonus stats by replacing an existing enhancement, enchant or gem. To that point there are what you would call
best
professions in Cataclysm, but with the caveat that they all largely provide the same bonuses and that you can honestly pick & choose any one you want, these unique persistent bonuses will not positively or adversely affect your gameplay in any noticable fashion.
Engineering
Engineering has been the staple raiding profession throughout Classic WoW and Cataclysm is not really any different, despite attempts to severely nerf this profession from past expansions. Engineering does not really see a huge evolution in the explosive category, some of the gadget attachments now come with drawbacks applicable in raids. Because of all this, it's hard to recommend Engineering for everyone. Make no mistake, Engineering when you are utilizing all the additional tools awarded to you is hands down the best profession, however if you can not or do not intend to use this profession to its fullest you can skip this for one with better passives. So what do you actually get as an Engineer?

While this is not an actually comprehensive list, believe it or not this is largely what you can find yourself crafting and using in Cataclysm. A few stand out pieces here are the

which is by all accounts a great tanking helmet. Cogwheels are just like normal gems, though cheaper and only fit into certain engineering only pieces. These unique

have a higher than average stat budget compared to ordinary sockets, permitting the Engineer to get just a little bit more out of their head slot. it also permits the user to very cheaply adjust the speciality of the helmet, if you for instance need an item with hit, or additional mastery to reach your goals.
Engineering attachments have been severely nerfed in Cataclysm however still play a critical role. Many of them have had their backfire mechanics expanded upon or made much more severe. The otherwise staple
氮气推进器
is now liable to give you the

debuff when in a raid. While this is a whopping
80%!
of your life total over its duration, it's actually not that bad in the grand scheme of things. We strongly feel that the positives of having Nitro Boosts outweigh the side effect and is the biggest reason as to why this profession is considered over others. Not all attachments come with drawbacks however and

can not backfire giving you access to good on-demand damage or mitigation.
As an Engineer you are somewhat limited in your viable pathways to making money from this profession. Almost everything you craft is only usable by other Engineers. However some crafts like

are consumables for hunters and they will need fresh ones every ranged weapon upgrade. There is a degree of synergy for Engineers and gatherers in the item

Alchemy
Alchemist raid utility is a relatively new concept for us as Protection Paladins, usually a very strong trade to pick up for those looking to make gold through their crafts. Alchemists are primarily crafting potions, elixirs, and flasks but they also dabble in transmutation. The latter is typically a day long cooldown that lets you turn one trade good (metal or gem) into another, or generate an endgame crafting material such as in the case of

Alchemy crafts range from zany to staple raiding consumes. For an Alchemist your elixir and flask durations are
doubled
and you will see enhanced effects from your crafts through

. Alchemists can choose to specialize in 3 different styles, whether it is Potion Mastery, Elixir Mastery, or Transmutation Mastery. All of these incur similar benefits to their respective fields in that they provide you with a chance to proc additional items when you are crafting. A huge benefit for Alchemists is that by crafting your own potions, which you are generally using every raid encounter you can purchase the constituent materials for much cheaper than a finished product. Alchemists also produce some gear in the form of Stones, these are typically entry raid level pieces but can be potent in their own right. All in all this is a great money making profession and a great phase 1 raiding profession.
Since the total amount of crafts is extremely long our list is not entirely exhaustive but rather pre-emptively curated to give you what we think are the most impactful crafts not only for your personal use, but also what you might craft the most of in your travels throughout Cataclysm.

A lot of the benefits of Alchemy beyond phase 1 comes from;

. This perk awards alchemists with bonuses that largely mirror those of other professions. To keep it brief, if you are an alchemist with this perk active you will recieve +40 stats from your elixirs (+80 combined), +80 stats from your
non stamina
flasks and +120 from your stamina flask. On top of this all your elixir and flask durations are doubled. The duration bonus is nice but generally not as impactful as one might think, if you are liable to die you don't gain much while using elixirs over flasks from this perk.
In phase 1 in particular though we are looking for

. This is a very potent phase 1 tanking trinket, a lot of stamina and a lot of mastery is kinda exactly what we're looking for. This is also never directly replaced in phase 1 itself and stays as one of your best defensive trinkets until Firelands.
Leatherworking
Leatherworkers craft gear and enhancements from, you guessed it; Leather products. While not an intuitive profession for us to pick up, it does come with some potentially strong benefits. Aside from crafting gear though mostly for others, leatherworkers also produce unique consumables in the form of leg enhancements and drums. The Leatherworker leg enhancements are a must-get for all physical DPS and tanks in the game and will provide you a steady source of income throughout the expansion. Drums in the case of
遗忘王者战鼓
is mostly meaningless for us unless you are found in a group without buff coverage as it mirrors a worse version of our kings buff. However the real deal with drums lies in

, this might seem small but being raid-wide makes leatherworking a genuine utility for your raid on any given encounter which involve a lot of movement or repositioning.
Leatherworkers also provide themselves with cheaper (or better) versions of wrist & leg enhancements, in the form of

which is actually what sets leatherworkers apart for tanks, in that this provides the greatest amount of stamina over any other profession by a fair margin which makes this superb for those that want a fat health bar.

is simply a leatherworking unique leg enhancement that mirrors the one that you craft & sell, but for much cheaper.

Archaeology
Archaeology is special in that it's a secondary profession (anyone can pick it up with no penalty) that permits you to find specific gear in the wild. While Archaeology does confer benefits, it is heavily steeped in RNG and generally not worth your effort. The exception to this is that during pre-patch we are eligible to locate

, which is a Fossil archaeology solve that you may obtain at 450 skill. Being able to in theory target grind a level 85 pre-raid BiS item is ofcourse very beneficial but ultimately whether it's worth the potentially huge time investment is up to you. In Cataclysm proper we can also obtain

from a Tol'Vir solve, while it would be a strong pick up by the time you're actually gearing in Cataclysm, we can not recommend a grind that can take you hundreds of hours on a sidegrade.
