Welcome to Wowhead's Frost Death Knight DPS PvE Class Overview guide for Cataclysm Classic! This guide will help you improve at your class and role, improving your knowledge to face the hardest Dungeons and Raids from Cataclysm Classic.
Throughout this guide, we will cover many different aspects to increase your Frost Death Knight expertise, including concepts like talents and talents builds, BiS gear choices, stat priorities, consumables, gems, enchants, among many other aspects of your class and specialization. Class Overview for Frost Death Knight DPS in Cataclysm
The

is an extremely powerful class with a massive toolbox across its three specializations. For this guide, we will take a look at the Frost specialization. The Frost specialization in Cataclysm continues to build on the foundations that were laid out for the spec in Wrath of the Lich King. We are still brought to the raid for the same reason we were in Wrath, but now we offer a bit more utility as we also provide the +4% physical damage buff through our

-talent, which we can spread to nearby enemies with

Frost DPS is a super fast-paced playstyle, with high sustained single target and AoE damage. There are many things to keep track of and always an impactful button to press, as you have two different resource systems being Runes and Runic Power, which are used for different types of abilities. Spending Runes on your core rotational abilities grants you Runic Power. You spend primarily this Runic Power on

, which is a hard-hitting instant attack that deals a large amount of frost damage.
As a Frost Death Knight in Cataclysm, you have the option to play with both dual-wield and two-handed weapons. Note that the two-handed playstyle is typically slightly weaker and will have to compete with Warriors and Paladins for weapons.

How Frost Death Knight DPS Changes in Cataclysm Classic
As for many other specs, many things have changed for Frost in Cataclysm.
Most importantly, instead of our Runes all regenerating individually, they now do so in sets of three. This means that two Runes of the same type cannot regen at the same time.
Say you spend two Blood Runes on

back to back, you have to wait for the first spent Blood Rune to fully regen before the second can start.
In Wrath, we had the distinction between the two "sub-specs"; namely Sub-Blood and Sub-Unholy. These no longer exist in Cataclysm, due to the rework of the talent trees. We now distinguish between dual-wield and two-handed Frost instead. In addition, there is also a build famously known as "Masterfrost", where one stacks high amounts of Mastery. The strength of this build is yet to be discovered for Classic Cataclysm, but the guide will be updated once we have fully discovered the potential power of this spec.
Stat and Attribute Changes
Strength
is now even stronger for us, due to the new passive

For those familiar with the Frost Death Knight in Wrath, you know that you were brought for the powerful

-buff. This is still the case in Cataclysm. However, we now have a bit more utility to provide to our raid, as well as a smoother rotation.
New Abilities & Talents
冰霜之柱
—Pillar of Frost replaces our beloved Unbreakable Armor. It still provides 20% Strength, but instead of granting a big boost in armor, it can now be used to make yourself immune to knockback abilities.
刚冷之骨
—Adds to our arsenal of important buffs, providing +4% physical damage to our raid group.
脓疮打击
—Festering Strike is a hard-hitting melee ability that costs 1 Blood Rune and 1 Frost Rune. It increases the duration of your diseases by 6 seconds, but is not really used as Frost.
爆发
—Outbreak instantly applies both Blood Plague and Frost Fever to your target, costing nothing but a GCD. Note that this ability is not available until level 81.
黑暗模拟
—Dark Simulacrum is a fun ability, that lets you copy the spell of an enemy. Its potential uses in PvE-content are unknown as of yet, but for PvP and Arena gameplay it is an incredibly powerful ability.

—Necrotic Strike is a strong PvP-ability that is guaranteed to annoy the opposite team's healers.
冰冷之心
—Frozen Heart is our "Mastery" passive, which scales with the Mastery stat that can be found on gear. It gives a flat 16% increase to our Frost Damage and an additional 2% per point of Mastery.
冰冻废土之力
—Enables the two-handed playstyle in Cataclysm, making it much closer to dual-wield in terms of power than it was in Wrath of the Lich King.

—Runic Focus is a new passive ability we train at our class trainer. It gives us a massive critical strike damage modifier to our spells, along with an additional 9% spell hit, meaning we only need to worry about our 8% hit cap for melee abilties.

—Runic Empowerment is another passive. This is a large reason why Frost always has a button to press, as it can instantly refresh a rune, after you use your main rotational abilities.
Class Viability for Frost Death Knight DPS
To cut straight to the point - Frost can have issues finding a raid spot in 25-man content, if you are looking to chase high-end raiding. Other specs bring the same and often more buffs and are likely to perform better. This does not mean that Frost is bad by any means - it still does great damage, brings valuable buffs and has strong personal defensive cooldowns.
Strong Frost Death Knight players can hold their own and is easily slotted into most raid groups.
For 10-man content things look great for us. We provide Melee Haste through

and the aforementioned +4% physical damage with

. As raid spots are fewer, due to the nature of 10-man raiding, you want to stack the raid with as many specs as possible that provide valuable buffs. Frost is a strong pick for any 10-man raid comp.
Frost is expected to remain a strong spec throughout the entire expansion. It starts off very strong, but is likely to become less competitive later in the final tiers of raiding, as other classes are expected to scale a bit better, as we have to compete with the infamous Arms Warrior and Survival Hunter to provide our buffs.
Class Mechanics for Frost Death Knight DPS
Unlike other classes, the Death Knight uses two different resource systems for its different abilities - namely Runic Power and Runes. You gain 10 Runic Power per Rune you spend. If you are familiar with the World of Warcraft-lingo of "builders" and "spenders", you can think of abilities that cost Runes as builders, and the ones that cost Runic Power as spenders.
Runes
As mentioned above, Runes are our "builder" resource. We have 6 runes in total: 2 Blood, 2 Frost and 2 Unholy. Spending Runes converts them into Runic Power. Due to our passive ability

, we no longer have Blood Runes, but Death Runes instead. Death Runes count as "jokers", which means that they can be used as any of the three rune types. When we spend runes, they will start to regenerate individually. This means that two Frost Runes cannot regen simultaneously. We primarily spend our runes on

Runic Power
Again, Runic Power can be regarded as our "spender" resource. It is capped at 100, but can be improved a bit via the

. You want to avoid overcapping on Runic Power as much as possible. Luckily, hitting

to soak up magic damage during boss and trash encounters and convert that into free Runic Power. This is almost guaranteed to fill your Runic Power bar every time you press it.
Runeforging
As Death Knights, we have access to

, unlike any other class. This gives us a wide selection of weapon enchants for free that can be swapped around by a short visit to the Ebon Hold. Most of the Runeforges won't see any uses in PvE-content, as our go-to will be

on our main-hand weapon and

on our off-hand weapon for the entire expansion. This cannot be used in conjunction with regular weapon enchants, but it is strong enough to on its own and knocks every other option out of the park.

Strengths & Weaknesses for Frost Death Knight DPS
Frost, like the other

specs, deals incredible sustained damage on both single target and in AoE-scenarios, but has a glaring weakness in its lack of mobility. When playing a Death Knight, you need to be more aware of your surroundings and incoming sources of damage than many other classes do. Partially because you can use incoming damage to your advantage with a well-timed

, but just as much because you lack good options to quickly move away from abilities that can instantly kill you.

For races, it probably comes to no surprise that the Horde is quite a bit ahead of Alliance in terms of raw output. This section tries to cover the strengths and weaknesses of the different races. While Horde is better than Alliance due to the nature of its racial abilities, the Alliance still has a handful of strong racials that synergize very well with Frost.
Alliance
For the Alliance, there are three strong options for

s. Human, Draenei and Worgen, where as Gnome and Night Elf aren't quite as powerful. Pick the race that fits your preferences the best, but do not underestimate racials that offer mobility over raw damage.
Human
Human is often the preferred race on Alliance, as it offers a reliable damage boost in PvE from their racial abilities.

gives a nice chunk of expertise while using a sword or mace, which reduces the chance your attacks will be dodged or parried by an enemy by 0.75%. Furthermore,

accelerates your pre-raid BiS farm by a decent bit, as it lets you spend less time farming reputations and more time doing other things. Finally,
生存意志
works as a PvP-trinket and removes any effect that makes you lose control of your character. Incredibly powerful in both PvE and PvP-scenarios.
Human is a strong choice that plays well into the strengths of Frost, despite it not solving our mobility issues.
Dwarf
Dwarves lack strong racial abilities for PvE-content, despite their access to

. Unfortunately, due to the lack of maces, the benefit of this talent does not come into play much.

is a strong defensive tool that can save you in a pinch, but due to our already impressive arsenal of defensive CDs, it is mostly relevant for tanking.
Night Elf
Unlike the Human, the Night Elf does not have any strong Racials to help you much in PvE scenarios.

are not exactly awful, as they help mitigate some damage in dungeons and raids, but it is not enough to warrant playing Night Elf, if your goal is to perform as well as possible in raids. Remember that we already have a strong arsenal of defensive abilities built into our kit that are far stronger than these racials.
Gnome
Like the Night Elf, the Gnomes lack strong Racial abilities to make them stand above the rest.

is worth mentioning, as it can help you get out of a tricky situation, where you perhaps were too slow to move or got chained by a team-mate.
工程学专精
Is quite neat early on, as it helps you reach max-level Engineering faster, which is beneficial as it can be quite expensive to level professions early on.
Draenei
Draneis have a few strong racial abilities.

is good as it lets you skip 1% hit on your gear, letting you go for other offensive stats. However, it now only affects you and not your entire party, making it a much weaker racial overall than it used to be.

is still a strong Heal over Time ability, that can save you or a teammate in a tight situation - however, with a 3 minute cooldown, it is not strong enough to rely on saving you every time you're in trouble.

works like the Gnome's

by giving you a 15-skill headstart to Jewelcrafting, letting you skip some of the more expensive skill-ups later on.
Worgen
Introduced in Cataclysm, the Worgen is in fact one of the stronger choices for Death Knights on the Alliance side.

gives a flat 1% critical strike chance, which is a quite powerful passive.

is extremely good, as it gives us a mobility option to rapidly move away from danger.
Horde
For Horde, there are multiple race-choices that can be beneficial to your PvE-performance. As for the Alliance races, some are better than others and the mobility-solving racials should not be underestimated, even if they seem weak on paper.
Orc
In terms of raw damage output, the Orc wins outright.
血性狂怒
gives a powerful on-demand Attack Power cooldown, which can be macro'd together with cooldowns like
冰霜之柱
. As Frost doesn't use a pet,

is unfortunately not very relevant for us.
斧专精
is still great, but not as good as it used to be, simply due to the fact that we are less likely to use Axes, due to the itemization of the raids. Note that Expertise still isn't a fantastic stat for Frost, but getting it "for free" through a racial is just great. Finally,

has also received a nerf, but is still a valuable passive, for when
冰封之韧
is unavailable or you're too slow to react to an incoming stun.
Troll
The Troll racial ability
狂暴
is still strong, like it was in Wrath. It lines up with our
冰霜之柱
and gives a nice Haste bonus. More Haste is great as it gives more auto-attacks, which can proc our
杀戮机器
-talent.
野兽杀手
is good, but not great, as there aren't many Beast-type bosses in Cataclysm.
Undead
Undead have an exceptionally powerful PvP ability in

. This spell is only useful in a handful of PvE encounters that involve a fear, charm, or sleep effect. In most PvE situations, Undead will perform significantly worse than most of its Horde counterparts, except for ones that involve a mechanic with Charm, Fear or Sleep effect.
Tauren
Like the Undead, the Tauren lack powerful PvE racials.

can be useful in scenarios where you want to interrupt a large pack of mobs, but it is mainly a PvP-related ability.
耐久
gives a nice health bonus, but since it scales with your base HP and not total HP, it is quite lackluster in the end.
Blood Elf
Blood Elfs are in the same position as most other races, where they lack a strong PvE Racial. That being said,

is great for interrupting and Silencing large packs of mobs or an opponent in PvP. It also restores 15 Runic Power, which can help out if you've accidentally depleted your Runic Power bar. However, since it costs a GCD, it is very rare that you will find yourself able to use this ability, without delaying more impactful ones.
Goblin
Like the Worgen for Alliance, the Goblins are introduced in Cataclysm as a playable race for the Horde. The Goblins deserve an honorable mention. While their Racials can seem a bit underwhelming at a glance, they are actually quite powerful.

gives a constant, flat 1% Haste, which is pretty powerful for the same reason the Troll racial is.

can be very useful in PvP scenarios, like the

Best Professions for Frost Death Knight DPS
In Cataclysm, most of the professions are perfectly viable and not particularly different from each other in terms of gains. However, some do become noticably more powerful towards the final tier of raiding, while others are exceptionally powerful early on by providing pre-raid Best in Slot gear.
Engineering
Engineering is, yet again, the largest possible damage increase you can acquire throughout Cataclysm. Engineering offers a powerful helmet

starting from Phase 1, which lasts well into the first tier of raiding. It also offers you Cogwheels, which are Engineering-specific gems granting 208 of a secondary stat, which you can use two of in your helmet. Besides this, it grants you access to explosives that you can use to squeeze in an extra bit of damage.
In addition, we also gain a nice movement-speed increasing cooldown with
氮气推进器
. Note that this is now changed to a Belt-tinker instead of Boots.
However, the most powerful bonus you get from Engineering is without a doubt the

. This is a DPS cooldown of 480 Strength that you can use once every minute. This is yet another cooldown that you can stack with
冰霜之柱
in a macro, making it even more impressive.
As a new thing in Cataclysm, this glove-tinker can also be used simultaneously with a regular glove enchant.
Blacksmithing
For Blacksmithing, nothing has really changed since Wrath of the Lich King. As a Blacksmith, you gain access to an extra socket for your Bracers and Gloves via

. Again, simple math will tell you that with regular gems you gain +80 Strength, but when Epic-quality gems are released later in the game, you will gain +100 Strength, thus making Blacksmithing + Engineering your best combination in the very late game.
Jewelcrafting
Jewelcrafting remains a powerful choice in Cataclysm, due to our incredible scaling with raw Strength. In Cataclysm, we get access to

, of which we can use three of simultaneously. Combined, these add up to 201 Strength and will be used instead of

. Some really fast math will come to the conclusion, that you gain 81 Strength over regular gems. Thus, Jewelcrafting is 1 Strength better than the alternatives, not counting Engineering. However, this changes in the final tier of raiding, where we get access to Epic-quality gems, like
朴素皇后榴石
, which will ultimately devalue Jewelcrafting later on.
Leatherworking
Leatherworking is typically not a very popular choice. It does offer a neat Embossment for your Bracers through

, as well as a "free" Leg Enchant through

. Keep in mind that the Leg Enchant is the exact same as the crafted one you would typically buy. It just saves you the cost. The Embossment for Bracers replaces the regular +50 Strength enchant, thus granting you a 80 Strength bonus.
Enchanting
Enchanters will be able to enchant their own rings with

, which offers a solid benefit throughout the expansion. Note that you can put this on both your rings, granting you +80 Strength in total.
Inscription
Inscription gives you access to the

Shoulder Enchant, which is stronger than your regular Shoulder Enchant by exactly 80 Strength. It has the added benefit of letting you skip the

Alchemy
Alchemy provides the neat perk of increased duration and effect of our DPS Flasks. Like most of the other professions, we will receive a bonus of +80 Strength as Alchemists, while under the effect of our go-to DPS flask.
Mining
Unfortunately, Mining does not give any tangible increase to our DPS, but does net us a neat +120 Stamina through

Skinning
Skinning is also a relatively poor choice from a pure PvE-performance standpoint, but it does prove a neat +80 Critical Strike Rating through

While it looks good on paper, as

There are several thing that are wrong in this topic.
i've played OG cata and a lot of Pservers with 4.3 cataclysm over the past 10 years so here's my opinion on how Frost works:
"STR-Haste-Mastery-Crit"
These are the main stats and the priority is:
STR
Haste 74% ish
Mastery 17-19% ish
Crit.7-8% ish
Also the last tier set which is T13 gives us 2 howling blast charge and that scales way much better with Howling Blast and Frost Strike.
so MasterFrost build is the most useless build at end game content, stacking Haste is the best way to play frost with a lil bit of Mastery just for Frost strikes, which as some point it will even scales better than UH and in some fights Frost can pull his weight up along with Fire mages and Rogues, Arms warr as well.
The thing about frost DK is that you want the most powerfull Dual wield weapons possible and it should be STR on all your gears as well.
With the execute talent and 1minute cd on Pillar of Frost, you can literally do some serious and out dps some op specs out there in the end game content.
Like I said, Frost is kinda unique after Wotlk. mastery added to the game makes the spec scales with gear and higher stats ( like Fury Warrior) .
considering this expansion frost has the highest APM of all classes, you'll likely see this spec surprisingly come up on dps and that's good tbh.
and if you don't believe what I've said now go watch some Firelands ragnaros HC or Magmaw HC on BWD or even Dragon Soul where Good player Frost DKs competing with Fire mages with those juicy legendaries.

Hey there, I'm an OG cata DK and theorycrafter whos spent half a decade playing on cata Pservers (now been on retail since WOD).
I was the guide writer for two servers, and have spent so much time perfecting Frost DKs.
Two points of note I should bring up:
Stat Prio should be Haste > Mastery > Crit unless you are running a Masterfrost build.
There is no mention at all of which presence you should be in (Unholy Presence is the answer).
Im not sure if I'm allowed to link my Frost PVE guide from a Pserver, so just do a simple google search for Kemii Frost PvE and it'll appear.
I'm also happy to answer any questions anyone has about Cata DK (specifically frost and unholy).
