The leader of the magic hungering race we know as Blood Elves, he resides in the 25-man raid known as Tempest Keep: The Eye.
Kael'Thas is protected behind laser walls in the actual instance. It is unknown at the time how to reach him, but I would assume you have to kill the three bosses (Al'ar the Sun Phoenix, Void Reaver, and High Astromancer Solarian) before his protection gives way.

Here is some lore for those of you who like lore.
Kael'Thas was in the service of the Alliance during Warcraft III. Given missions that required him to remove entire camps of undead with little troops he teamed up with Lady Vash (spelling). The alliance saw that he was teaming up with Naga and arrested him and sentensed him to die. Vash broke into the prison and freed Kael and his blood elves. He went with her to Outland where he met and pledged his services to Illidan. Illidan, being in the service of the Burning Legion accepted.
Together the three headed toward Northrend to destroy the Litch King Ner'Zhul. At the foot of the Frozen Throne they met Arthas' armies. This is where Arthas attacked and nearly killed Illidan. Kael'Thas and Vash came to Illidan's aid and took him back to Outland to nurse him back to health, which is where the three reside now.

Illidan does suffer from the delusion that he had won the fight against Arthas at the base of the Frozen Throne. In his mind he replays the fight over and over, seeing himself coming out victorious over Arthas.
These "mental issues" could be why Illidan's forces are becoming to split from the Legion army. Or It could also be the out come of Illidan's fear of the Legions wrath for failing them in taking out the Lich King.

He has 4 adds that each drop legendary weapons good for all classes eventually. Each add is different; Warrior, Hunter, Mage, and Protection Warrior. The Legendaries are used by the raid during the fight only. Everyone in the raid can pick 1 up of each type. I'm sure there are strats to maximize usefulness, pre-Kael'thas DPS, for the legendaries. Kael'thas supposedly has 5 phases and on the 5th phase he is floating in the air like
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=20454
between two crystals. Powering up something like 3 episode long bad DBZ shows. When he lands he does a DBZ deal and some of the walls explode from a burst of power. Shortly afterward he brings the entire raid to him(think Shade of Aran) he uses that 'Mana Shield' that actually does damage and then the entire raid can 'swim' in the air.
There's a video floating around from an EU guild that made it to the 5th phase.

Apparently when you hand in the vial, Kael'thas will /shout in the city saying that he isn't dead, something like "You didn't finish the job!".
Kind of a cop-out on Blizzard's part, because you DO kill him, but on the other hand, now they can keep his character in the lore of the game.
A major and interesting character like him being killed essentially by 25 no name (lore-wise, nothing against Nihilum or Curse) people would be anti-climactic.

>There is the faction lead by the lich king Arthas and his most trusted lut. Kel'Thuzad (This faction is known as the Scourage)
>There is the undead faction lead by the banshee Sylvanas Windrunner which is the playable undead faction (This faction is known as the Forsaken)
>The undead that are under the control of the dreadlords and the burning legion, after the legions defeat at the battle of mount hyjal (The dreadlords were still unaware of the burning legions defeat)
Before you go off telling people they are wrong maybe you should look something up

Phase 1
4 Advisors
Thaladred the Darkener the first advisor of four. This Mob is slower than Run speed but will kill anyone with a single blow if in melee range.
Gaze Ability (A Fixate) -- Targets a specific person and walks towards them in an attempt to bring targeted person into melee range
Knockback ( ~4-5k Damage) -- Mainly happens to Gazed Person but has potential for others, will throw person into air hurtling them at a wall, most of the time no fall damage is incurred but the initial damage of ~4-5k is enough.
Lord Sanguinar the second advisor of four. Recommend using a Tank on this mob. He runs faster than Run Speed.
Fear (30 Yard AoE ) – Will cast on a predictable timer, everyone in range will be feared.
Grand Astromancer Capernian the third advisor of four. Recommend Ranged in Fire Resistance build Hate before raid engages.
Fireball (~6-7K Fire Damage(Mitigatable)) – Cast on person with highest agro consecutively.
Conflagrate (~800-1100 Per Tick, 10 Second Duration) – Cast on raid, Will hit multiple targets, based on proximity.
Arcane Explosion (A lot of Damage) – Triggered by people or pets in melee range
Master Engineer Telonicus the fourth advisor of four. Tanked by a single tank, melee on opposite side. Everyone must be aware of who has Toy.
Bomb ( ~7-9k AoE) – Thrown repeatedly, This is a Frontal Cone attack.
Remote Toy ( ~0 damage ) – 1 minute Timer on Debuff, Will stun for ~4 seconds per proc. Multiple procs during 1 minute duration. All hate is ignored while Stun is active.
Phase 2
Phase 2 starts once Telonicus dies. Kael'thas summons the Advisors' weapons and you will have to fight them simultaneously :
Upon Death the weapon is lootable for ~60 seconds letting users of that specific weapon loot and equip. All the weapons have special buffs or abilities crucial to later stages and the defeat of this encounter.
Phase 3
Advisors all at the same time
Phase 4
Kael'thas becomes Active in this stage.
Pyroblast (~18k after all Mitigation) – Melee Interrupts this as much as possible; Tank uses Legendary Shield to mitigate during another ability.
Summon Phoenix (AoE damage) – fly around and do AoE damage to players as well as themselves. Will turn into a Phoenix Egg when they die, and this egg will resurrect the phoenix if not killed within roughly 15 seconds.
Flame Strike ( ~2k+ per second ) – Spell Detail level to High in order to see these, Similar to Void Zones they do damage per second you stand in them. Once initial spell is cast damage will persist until the floor no longer glows.
Shield (20K or greater health) – Shield stops melee from interrupting Pyroblasts, can cause issues if not DPSed down fast enough.
Mind control ( 1 Minute Duration ) – Typically in groups of two, casters, melee, and healers will get Mind controlled. No extra damage is applied when damaging raid but healers can buff, and heal Kael for Ridiculous amounts, one of the legendary weapons is designed to break this.
Arcane explosion (~100-600 Arcane Damage) – Nominal and easy to heal through it is a periodic damage that hits zone wide.
Phase 5
Kael'thas adds spells to his repertoire
Gravity Lapse – All members of raid are Teleported to him and shot into the air, everyone can “Swim” and needs to get away from each other. At the end of this ability the raid will fall to the ground and take fall damage.
Netherbeam (Chains damage and increases as it hops) – A Chain lightning attack, will bounce through people too close and amplify in damage, otherwise it will just hit single people and do minimal damage.
Nether Vapor - Appear as small black clouds floating around in the air with you. If touched they add a stacking debuff that reduces your max health by 10% each time.

I am thinking that probably we haven't seen the last of Kael'thas, blizzard probably has more plans for him later...
I don't see him not dieing from the fight a "cop out" by blizzard since they were fully willing to let Illidan die in his encounter - and the loot from his bloodied corpse includes his signature weapons.
but where is the Runeblade Flamestrike from Kael'thas? being such an ancient weapon... it is probably much greater in power than the Warglaives of Azzinoth...
So here is hoping for a rematch in a future exspansion :)

You're level 70, I'm assuming. Explain to me, then, why the giant stone woman in Uldaman is still listed as ?? to you.
In raid instances the bosses are (for game mechanics purposes) three levels above the level of the instance, i.e. Rag is (as far as mechanics go) level 63.
While you are correct that ?? in PvP terms and against most mobs means that what you are fighting is 10+ levels over you, you'll notice that any raid boss from WoW Classic remains ?? even though you've gained ten levels over the ideal level for the instance. If the ??/skull symbol were used in the way you are trying to describe in raids, nobody would be able to kill an instance boss because none of the DPS would be able to land a single hit - it'd all be dodged/parried.
So yes, you are right. But so is everyone else. :)
EDIT: This was @ Thorandric - it just decided to not tab in my reply.

Actually, the Lich King DID need to bind with Arthas.. Ner'zhul was in a weakened (and still weakening state) throughout due to the Frozen Throne having been cracked when it landed in Northrend. That's why he needed Arthas to get there. Because he needed to put himself into a less damaged... vessel, as it were.

Blizzard has announced a new raid dungeon in Sunwell Plateau. This is were you possibly face Kael'thas again. As the above post hints he is trying to summon Kil'jaeden into Azeroth.
Sunwell Plateau is an island located to the north of Eversong Woods. It is the location of the Sunwell Grove. The area will be patched into the game after the raid-zone Zul'Aman. It will consist of two wings, a 25-man raid and a 5-man instance with both normal and heroic modes. Nevertheless, the instances will both most likely be outside, similar to other outdoor instances (Zul'Farrak and Zul'Gurub for example).
The 25 man raid of Sunwell Plateau will consist of 6 bosses where players will find blood elves reigniting the powers of the Sunwell with crates brought in from Netherstorm from the Manaforges. As well as reviving the Sunwell, Kael'thas is planning on using it to summon Kil'jaeden into Azeroth, just as the Highborne had attempted to summon Sargeras through the Well of Eternity. Players may face off against Kael'thas once again and a twisted abomination of Kil'jaeden that is still being summoned.

Probably the hardest fight i've encountered in WoW (Went up to Twin emperors pre tbc). Currently wiping on him now. Spent little over a week learning him. Phase 1 is pretty easy, phase 2 is relativley easy also once you get the tactics sorted out....we normally get all but shield and axe down before P3. P3 is where the fight really begins, you gotta face all 4 adds at once and any remaining weapons that come. Needless to say DPS from phase 2 onwards has to be insane. We've gotten to phase 4 lots of times, but only twice with 3 adds down and 1 at 30%. The phase changes in this fight seem to be the hardest part, although phase 4 is pretty insane too.
So yer, pretty hard boss. Hopefully we will get him into phase 5 this week and move onto the really fun instances :).
But to anyone coming up to him, i suggest your entire guild knows the tactics before hand, there will be tons of wipes! Then you will get respawns after 2 hours. So it's best if you can do things fast, espically wipe recovery.
Also, if you die during this fight it seems to be pretty hard to complete without everyone alive, thats what i've seen up to phase 4 atleast.

Its worth noting that the Phaseshift Bulwark seems to have a shield spike that reflects 800-1100ish damage during the weapon phase. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere before but I saw it in the tank's death log in our raid (he basically killed himself on it).

Here is what i dont understand. Kael'thas wants vengence on those who destroyed silvermoon, aka Arthas and the scourge. However, Kil'jaeden was the one responsible for the creation of the scourge. Now, Kael aids Illidan, and if Kael didnt know that Kil'jaeden was the creater of the scourge, Illidan certainly did. I makes NO sense why Kael would serve Kil'jaeden, particularly now that he was found additional sources of mana. Lorewise, i cant find any justification for Kael serving the legion.

Here is some lore of Kael'thas Sunstrider:
He is the descendant of Dath'Remar Sunstrider, who appeared in the "War of The Ancients" books by Richard A. Knaak. Kael joined forces with Illidan Stormrage and Lady Vashj when Illidan was working for the Burning Legion. Eventually, Illidan broke away from the Burning Legion and claimed ownership of Outland.
Kael is now secretly serving Kil'jaeden, the current leader of the Burning Legion. Once Kael is defeated in The Eye, players can defeat him in the Magister's Terrace, where he is trying to summon his new master to the world of Azeroth.

Now, I know in the 2.4 patch they were making it so you didn't have to clear the other bosses in TK to get to Kael (And SSC for Vashj). Does this mean the doors to his trash just start open, or is there like a teleport straight to his room?
My guild hasn't been back to him yet (we had downed Vashj pre-patch but not Kael), but we will go to kill him soon so we can get our Hyjal rings. I was just wondering the kind of time commit it would take to get to him so as to help figure out what nights we will continue to attempt to down him.

Phase 2, marking up the weapons:
/targetenemy

Spam the macro while standing in front of the weapons right when they spawn, it would assign a specific mark for each weapon (same marks each time). Uses raid target icons 1-7.

When raids have a problem with this fight its usually at the start of phase 3, but if you have trouble at the start of phase 3, the real problem is probably phase 2. You should at least have everything but the axe down with plenty of time to spare before the advisors return. If this isn't the case, re-examine how you're handling the weapons. The best use of your limited time is to aoe as many weapons as possible. Only two weapons can't be practically grouped for AoE, those being the axe and bow. The axe being left over isn't a big deal, since it doesn't provide critical buffs like other weapons. The bow can be handled to the side by two ranged DPS. Ideally this job goes to ranged DPS with high armor, meaning hunters or moonkin. The rest of the raid focuses on AoE. Have some kind of melee assigned to tank each weapon in the aoe cluster to avoid aggro mishaps. Any weapon dragged out of the pile is not just a danger to the clothie that pulled, but precious lost AoE DPS. Consecrate or cleave is not enough to deal with the maximum potential of seed of corruption, so every weapon should have a tank dedicated to that weapon alone. Give the true tanks the sword, daggers, and shield, then go down the list to DPS warriors, rogues, etc for the mace, and staff. Make sure paladins are aware the staff tank will benefit from blessing of freedom. If you use AoE to its full potential while keeping the weapons piled, they will go down quickly. Two ranged can take out the bow, then the axe can be deferred until after all the advisors if need be.

I'll guess it's probably because Phase 3 is on a timer. A raid of 80s can easily pass phase 3 and burn him in Phase 4 down to 50% which should trigger Phase 5, but all that can be done in less than 3 minutes, which is the time you have for phase 3.
The easiest solution to prevent this bug is probably to ask the raid to have slow dps on Kael or throughout phase 3.

Pay atention during the phase where he floats away
Cause you can change to ML during it
Today:
the leader decided it was a good idea to ninja the mount if it dropped so he changed to ML while the animation of the fight where he floats started
Yes ineed
so as a good tank friend of 2 priest and talked to a 3rd healer in the raid we stopped playing i eated the pyro
and tada... wipe
Poor &*!@#$% he lost his chance to ninja the mount since the ones left didnt even know how to play
So my advice is pay attention if you are here for the mount try to be the leader and not let ML just roll
Or force a wipe if it tryies to ninja it

Me and a group of friends killed him today, 7 people total. 1 Tank 1 Healer 5 DPS. Wiped once but the second try we got him. I think you'll need a Paladin or Warrior tank to use the shield to stop Kael's Pyroblast, I suppose a DK could use antimagic shell.
The hardest part of the fight was stopping the mind controls. If our dagger and staff users got MCd at the same time (happened in the first attempt) it was pretty much a wipe because of the disorient. In order to dispell the MC you need to attack with an ability, auto swings don't work. Apparently Fan of Knives does work. No mount for us this week but we'll continue trying our luck.

what i hate about the ENTIRE kael thas thing in TBC is this, kaels people, the blood elves,(then the high elves) suffered from a magic addiction when the sunwell got destroyed, and so he lead them thru trials and stuff, to a form of salvation. they craved magic, so he got to outland and gave them magic. and now, everyone hates him. what the !@#$ did he do wrong?

The remaining blood elves on Azeroth, now without support from the Alliance, are looking desperately to the Horde to help them reach Outland, where they can reunite with Kael'thas and achieve the golden destiny he promised them.
Kael'thas resides in the Eye of Tempest Keep, his citadel in Outland, floating among the ethereal islands of the Netherstorm. He leads various groups of blood elves in Outland, who are in the service of Illidan, Lord of Outland.
The skull of his father is still in his posesion and is among the artifacts that the red and green dragonflights would need to try to restore the Sunwell.LoC 115
Lately, Kael's loyalty to Illidan is beginning to crumble, and there are very few - even among his own people - who would wish to join with his new allies...

The start of Phase 5 can bug if Kael'thas is burned down too heavily. Kael'thas will float in air without breaking the roof. He will then follow players mid-air but will do absolutely nothing else nor take any damage and the entire event has to be restarted from scratch.
I ran this with a 23 player Achievement PUG last week. Players ranging from lvl. 75-80. Despite desperate pleas and warnings from the raid leader Kael reached 50% in less than/about 30 seconds resulting in the bug described above.
All this time I've thought that it was blizzards fault for him bugging out. My guild back in the day when this was still end game (pre Sunwell) had this issue for 2 weeks running. Now I smile when I think that our DPS was too uber for Kael to handle!

We tried this in March 2010 with 14 L80s...
Here's the tactics for an overgeared group:
Phase 1 - Adds engage 1 by 1, should be trivial to zerg them down.
Phase 2 - Weapons engage all at once, was fairly easy to AoE them all, didn't cause any realy headaches.
Phase 3 - you get a few seconds break before the adds resurrect, all at once. Get someone to raid mark Thaladred and Capernian for ranged DPS to burn down. Take the mage first (capernian) because Congflag is a pain in the arse. *** See notes later on
Phase 4 - Kael engages, seemed pretty easy to burn him down, watch for Phoenixes. *** BUGGED
Be careful of mind control... a lose L80 can easily cause a lot more pain then the boss or the adds.
Also note that although there's a gap between phases you're never out of combat so resurrecting people isn't possible without a brez
***So when we got Kael to about 50% he bugged out, and wasn't targettable. he would float towards the highest aggro person, and if they hearthed he'd float towards the next one. Couldn't be reset, couldn't break out, just had to hearth. (GM's too busy with painting their toenails to answer our ticket even after 2 days!)
So reading from other people's comments it sounds like what you need to do is the following...
Make sure Kael doesn't hit 50% health in phase 4 before the phase 3 timer has expired (3 mins)
When you've killed 3 out of 4 of the adds in phase 3, then stop all DPS. Let the tank soak up damage while people go for a Bio or whatever... make sure that phases 3 and 4 last a good 3 - 4 minutes. Once you're bored, kill the last add, and then take Kael down to 50% and hopefully he'll get to phase 5.
If you get to Kael without downing any other bosses then this is a good idea because you won't get your raid ID locked if you bug it.
*this is speculation but based off other people's comments... will post once i've tried it*

Ok, tried to two man him (prot and holy pala in mostly 245-251 gear) and here's what happened.
Phase 1:
Thaladred - 191k hp, Tank and poke for a while in between silences. Healer run away when he chases. Run away if rend stacks to 4 and let it drop (but it never got higher then 3 for me).
Sanguinar - 191k hp, healer beacon tank and run ~50 yards away then heal self. Tank and spank as normal.
Capernican - 138k hp, use every trick you can. If possible try to get her into a corner so she only spams Arcane Blast at you (low damage + hit you against the wall so you can keep attacking) This one took the longest to down.
Telonicus - 191k hp, The Remote Toy ability can be annoying, and he does hit fairly hard, but keeping Sacred Shield up he never got me below 30% hp when both myself and my healer was stunned at the same time. The stuns are random so you may get lucky or unlucky. Other then that, basic nuke.
Phase 2:
Weapons. Kill the mace first asap. all the weapons combined on me did little damage, but kept my mana up high so I could go 'all out'. After about 2 min the adds get ress'ed with ~double hp. by this point I managed to get the sword, shield daggers and bow down trough mainly AoE and reflective damage, however the mace was barely dented due to it healing for 30-50k each time.
After a matter of seconds, the adds swarmed on us and I had to DI my healer.
Ok, not the most interesting account, but should give you some idea.
I reckon a prot warrior would be far more useful. and perhaps a priest or shaman healer to throw dots / dps a little on the adds.
Only real problem is Capernian as she can completly mess you over and over. Even in Phase 1.
Well, if you do plan on going solo / 2manning it. GL heh
Reason for trying this: Why not? ^^

We did this with 7 level 80s. I'm sure it could be done with 5 level 80s but you need the proper composition and strategy.
The problems arise in phase 4 when he will Mind Control 3 players at once. We had our single melee player loot the legendary dagger, but he himself got the MC almost every time, so he wasn't able to clear the MC's, resulting in wipes. Have your tank loot the legendary dagger as well. The tank won't ever get the MC. Always dispell the healer first, otherwise the healer will heal Kael'thas up very quickly. Not to mention, with only one healer, your going to need the heals.
Make sure a ranged DPS loots the staff and stays in range of the tank so he doesn't lose agro, the healer loots the mace to reduce pyroblast damage, and the tank loots the shield to reduce pyroblast damage. The axe, bow, and sword aren't really important to the fight. I'm not sure if their chance on hit procs outweigh the damage you would lose from switching your higher DPS weapons out with them.
Also, as already mentioned, he will bug out in phase 4 if you DPS him too quickly. I'd recommend spending at least 3 minutes in phase 4 before taking him to 50%.
The rest should be pretty simple. Good luck!

Soloable in Cataclysm. Proven by Raegwyn:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atATvXfxwPU
Doing it with one person will be doable (in T11) if you are a tank class following this strategy. Edit: Several other specs and classes have unique and proven ways of doing it now too - the other comments are very helpful with this.
If not, you may want to take 4-5 people (and use the normal strategy). It can probably be done with 2-3 people, but it will be hard.

Diagram: (IMPORTANT)
http://img19
.%^&*!@#$%^&*!/img19/2672/tempestkeeptheeye.jpg
Phase 1
Begin the fight by walking to
Point A
on the diagram. Kael'thas will start his RP. Quickly run to the bottom left exit of the room (near Point C), and run all the way back to the beginning of the instance (
Point B
).
Thaladred the Darkener will make his way to you. Tank him in a corner because he has a move called
Psychic Blow
, which is a knockback.
Lord Sanguinar will come up next. Bandage yourself in between Thaladred and Sanguinar if you have time. Lord Sanguinar's only real ability to watch for is his fear.
After you kill Lord Sanguinar, quickly run to
Point C
. Grand Astromancer Capernian will start attacking you along the way, just avoid her. When you get to Point C, duck into one of the corners of the room, LoSing her. Make sure you are against a wall but still in melee range. Her
Arcane Burst
has a knockback plus slow, so it can be very hard to get back to her if you get knocked away. She also uses
Conflagration
which will incapacitate you for 10 seconds, allowing her to wail away at you. Use class abilities to prevent or escape it (Raegwyn pre-emptively AMS'd it).
After you kill Grand Astromancer Capernian, proceed post-haste to
Point D
. Master Engineer Telonicus will engage you. His only ability of note is
Remote Toy
, a debuff which periodically stuns you for a few seconds. It lasts for one minute and is extremely annoying, but probably won't kill you.
Phase 2
Quickly run back to
Point C
to intercept the weapons that spawn. Use AoE attacks to take them down and spam self-healing abilities to keep yourself alive. Use DPS cooldowns here (and survivability cooldowns if needed). There will likely be 1 or 2 weapons still alive when Phase 3 begins.
Phase 3:
No running around. This time, the mobs run to YOU. There will be 1 or 2 weapons up from the previous phase (unless you're amaaazzzing or something), but don't worry about it (especially if it is the shield, it is weak).
Grand Astromancer Capernian will be the first to come to you. Master Engineer Telonicus will come next. Lord Sanguinar will come third. Lastly, Thaladred the Darkener will make his appearance.
Finish them off the same way you did in Phase 1.
Phase 4:
The hardest part of this phase is the Mind Control. Because you are soloing the fight, the Mind Control will not activate UNLESS there is another friendly target alive in the raid zone. You cannot have a Shadowfiend, a Ghoul, a Hunter pet, a Warlock pet, a Water Elemental, the Guardian of Ancient Kings, or EVEN BLOODWORMS active or he will reset to 100% hp when he Mind Controls you, ending combat and wasting a huge amount of time.
Quickly run to
Point E
, LoSing Kael'thas using the stairs.
Kael'thas has several abilities. For his standard attacks, he alternates between melee swings and chain-casting Fireball.
Fireball
is a slow cast which is interruptable. If you are a class with multiple interrupts, feel free to use interrupts (Mind Freeze) on the Fireballs to lessen the damage taken, but always have a spare interrupt available for Pyroblast (Strangulate).
Pyroblast
is a move he casts every 60 seconds, usually right after
Shock Barrier
(which is similar to the Twin's Shield that the Val'kyr Twins use in ToC). Use any damage reduction cooldown to reduce the impact of the first Pyroblast (besides Guardian of Ancient Kings, obviously). From then on, try to eliminate the Shock Barriers before he finishes casting, so you can interrupt the Pyroblast.
The last part of Phase 4 is the Phoenix. Kael'thas will summon Phoenixes periodically. They do a medium amount of damage and should be killed, but priority remains on interrupt Kael'thas' casts over DPSing it. Try to use DoTs until it goes into egg form. It will also slowly kill itself. After they die, they go into egg form, in which they will be reborn if you do not DPS it down fast enough.
Phase 5
At 50%, Kael'thas will run away and -attempt- to go back to his room. Take this time to bandage if you want. He will stop at
Point C
and summon you (after a minute or so). Ignore him and air-swim/run all the way back to
Point E
, LoSing him the same way you did in Phase 4. Continue to DPS him as advised in Phase 4.
When he casts Gravity Lapse a second time, remain at a distance from him until the effect ends. Do not at any cost go within 8 yards of Kael'thas until he has stopped channeling Gravity Lapse. If you do, you will get tons of stacks of
Nether Vapor
and die, painfully.
Rinse and repeat for great success!
Enjoy!

Saying Kael'thas isn't soloable isn't entirely accurate. Currently, it seems that warlocks are able to get far enough to run into a minor wall of Pyroblast deaths, but it's likely that in a tier or two along with proper use of soulburning demons and such, Warlocks might blast through those hinders.
As stamina increase and damage done goes up, players have a shot at managing the fight because the MC is plainly avoidable if you're alone.

Ive seen many people asking if this guy can be 3 manned. Answer is definetly and ill say how.
My group is based on a Ret. Paladin. , DPS Death Knight , And Frostmage.
Phase1 is pretty straight forward , kill those .
Weapon Phase , Mage (me) Killed the staff , took it and placed protective field on all of us , kill all weapons etc..realy easy with 3dps to kill them fast.
The "tricky" part is when they all Spawn. How we dealt with this is trivial .
Marked in the order of the damage dealt to the raid.
*1.The Mage solo`ed the Female fast ( Ive used Ice barrier and mage ward whenever on CD with IV popped). You should be taking any dmg at all , but make sure your Deep Freeze is off Cooldown cause it crits for 100k .
*1.The Ret paladin and DK killed Lord Sanguinar first . We found this dude dealing high dmg to the melee DPS so here the RET pala used his Heal at 3 Holy Power aswell as the DK used his Abilities to gain health.
*2.Then the Engineer ( Make sure you move out of the bombs if possible , its realy important since it deals a high ammount of dmg )
*3.The slowed one , this should be kited so it doesnt hit ppl.
The next phase : Only problem here is mindcroll which isnt a problem at all :)
Tip : We used PvP trinkets . If myself (Mage) was MC`ed i instaly trinketed it , if the 2nd time i would of got MCed Iceblocked and imediatly after followed by Cooldsnap to have Iceblock again. Paladin was using his Trinket and Bubble to break it. And the DK just had the PvP trinket.
This phase imo is the easiest one , when you enter this phase make sure the DK uses army , Paladin uses Guardian for DMG , Mage uses IV + Time Warp and you have to get off him abut 1.25million if im not mistaken to enter last phase . He goes down realy fast with 3 DPS.
Last phase is burndown phase , even if 1 dies its realy no problem. We usualy had 1 dying because of the pyro (it can be avoided if you have DK shield off cd and if mage is properly shielded and has Ward). Paladin can use the shield tho and he should when he casts pyro.
Thats all ( KInda )
a.)Make sure you make use of the Legendary staff( Especialy for the Remote Toy from the engineer !) , Shield and whatever you can since it makes your life easier.
b.)Also for fellow mages if trying this comp have your Ice Barrier 24/7 Active aswell as your mage ward.
c.)Paladin has the 3 Holy Power heal which is extremly usefull , use it dont *!@#$ on dps and heal your raid (Dead dps is no dps)
d.)Use buffs of the Ah , especialy the Health Buff , buy a scroll 5g (Helps %^&*loads) and if you feel that you lack dps , pop a flask and a fish feast !
e.)Make item switch macros so you can easily switch in fight between staff and your normal weapons , aswell as the paladin switch the shield for his Two Hander.
Hope i didnt miss something that was realy important.
Hope this was helpful , enjoy and GL getting the mount.
PS: im 100% certain that other comps work so try it !

If you are a tank class and can make a pact with a warlock this will be MUCH easier. In my case I am currently dual boxing it with feral druid and demo lock. The lock can provide powerful and crucial dps, and an offtank via void or felguard. Lock can soulstone self, suicide before the mind control phase, and pop up for the last phase. My issue with the feral druid does seem to be lack of viable self healing, but I truly think gear and experience with multitasking will remedy this. Let's just hope Blizz leaves this encounter alone. It still takes dedication and repetitive work to earn this awesome mount.

Tried today once again
Now with better gear (balance of dps/tank sta gear) around 160k HP and 11k AP, I was able to kill all weapons and the mage, but after that i'm dieing with Rend and the stun mob :x
Improvement!
Using Drums of forgotten kings and Prismatic Elixir like the DK on the video.
Also PvP trinket for when the mage mob does the stun, helps alot.
Will try again in some days, maybe with a friend helping me dpsing those mobs.
Will see.

Affliction Warlock / Feral bear druid
Succesfully 2 maned KT last night, after spending a ton of time working out kinks and different strats we finally got one that worked for us.
We kited Thaladred/Sanguinar to the entrance of the instance, while my bear druid friend soloed Sanguinars last 50% with dots on it I ran up to Capernian and killed her in the doorway, meanwhile he ran up and waited for Telonicus to come out, killed him in Al'ars room.
Weapons come out and I dot up the staff and AoE the other weapons down, I get a staff and equip it, my friend gets a staff and a healing mace, he also equips the staff for this phase.
I stay up and solo Capernian and he goes down and tanks Sanguinar/Telonicus and kites thaladred, normaly by the time Capernian is almost dead he has teonicus down to about 60-70%, he runs up as I run down to dps Telonicus and Sanguinar, this is where it gets interesting.
Normally by the time Sanguinar is dead we have about a minuite till Kael comes out, meaning there is a minuite to kill Thaladred, wich in most cases is fine, you can easily set up a demonic teleport and kite Thaladred up and down the stairs.
After he dies I summon a voidwalker, and have it go up and attack kael while I stay in al'ars room, kael gets tanked in the hallway, if you try to dps kael yourself you just get mind controlled, so my friend and my pet dpses the boss while my friend has the staff on. This phase is the longest phase.
When a phenoix spawns, my pet attacks it and drags it into Al'ars room and I kill it, it's way too much damage for the feral bear to handle.
During a pyroblast, my friend will use the mace and toss a quick heal on himself and quickly re-equip the staff, this gives a buff that absorbs 50% of the pyro damage. Barkskin/survival instincts is also helpfull.
If you did the previous phase right, this phase shouldn't be an issue, and will just take a long time since you're having a voidwalker and a bear tank doing all the damage while you twiddle your thumbs.
When you get to the final phase, you're home free, it 's as easy as you dpsing the boss and your friend doing the same while making sure you don't fail at the easy mechanics of the phase (don't fly to high up, don't get hit by nether vapor)
Loot boss get mount.
PS: We're both wearing 364+ ilv, i'm not sure how easy it will be for lesser geared people, I also don't see many people actualy persuing a strat like this because most lack the patience, it took us multiple nights of attempts to try and get something to work for us, i'm sure any pet comp could do this with a tank using this strat. (Dk's/pallys prolly better than feral tanks tbh)
PSS: Killing Al'ar does wonders, we actualy found out one of our pulls that Kaels phenoixes he summons aggros their mama.

Just downed this with 3-people; my boyfriend: a prot warrior (ilLVL 350) our friend: a ret pally (new 85, iLVL 332) and ele shaman (myself; iLVL 347).
I took the staff and the warrior took the dagger and shield.
Phase 1:
Pretty straightforward, just killed each advisor as they came out.
Phase 2:
We first killed the Cosmic Infuser; as this one heals. I put my fire totem on the staff during this phase to speed up the DPS. Next we killed the staff, dagger, shield (in that order) and finally finished off the rest of the weapons. It is important they're all down BEFORE the next Phase, but not critical.
Phase 3:
I think phase 3 is the toughest, but since we had so much DPS they went down faster then their damage output. During this phase I equipped the staff and used it to make us immune. We killed the mage first, as she causes the most trouble. Next, the engineer, as his bombs/toys are quite annoying. Finally, we killed the other two.
Phase 4:
This phase can be difficult, but once the mechanics are understood it is arguably the easiest phase. Our tank equipped the dagger (to break MC) and the shield to mitigate the pyro damage. He used the shield during the first one and we interrupted the second. During this phase all three of us focused on the boss and ignored the phoenixes; it is important to DPS him fast when he does the Pyroblast as he also puts a shield on himself which makes him immune to interrupts. We also all tried to interrupt all his firebolts.
Phase 5:
This phase is fairly straightforward as well and reminiscent of the final fight in Magister's :P. When he does his gravity lift it is important to RUN out as far as possible- he puts a stacking debuff which lowers everyones health dramatically. During this part, I killed the phoenixes and we all made sure our hp was topped off. When his shield goes down, just burn him fast, in the future I will use heroism during this phase.
I think many other comps could easily 3-man this boss. Having a warrior tank seems like the only way this is possible with only 3 people; as the MCs MUST be broken. Possibly a druid tank that could switch out may work.. but it would be tough. It also may be possible with two dps + 1 healer. This took us 6 attempts; and we finally downed him on the 6th AFTER I switched from resto to ele. We probably could've downed him with me as resto as at that point we understood the fight better. However, the problem with having a healer, is during the MC phase, it is hard for the tank to quickly break the MC and thus the boss ends up getting healed. Having pally with LoH and quick heals was helpful as well and it went fast with 3-dps so we will probably stick to that comp. No mount for us, but hopefully we will get it soon! :)
Good luck to everyone trying to farm for this beautiful mount. <3

I had the Dagger and the Shield to break MCs and to use shield whenever needed, Paladin had Mace to keep the buff on (sure it wasn't needed tho) and Mage had the Staff to counter the disorients and other disabling abilites.
I was taking care of phoenixes and mage was just dpsing the boss.

After Catacllysm it is possible to do it as a 5-man group (maybe even less) if you just do the tactics right, it aint that hard to do.
This will really make farming ashes of alar a lot easier... if it drops ;)

2 manned this earlier today with my Blood DK in 333-346 DPS gear and an Elemental Shaman (Mainly 359 gear). First two phases are tank and spank, Ele Shaman grabs the staff to prevent conflag/arcane disruption from Kael'thas. We killed Thaladred first in P3 followed by Telonicus (because of the Toy debuff) then Capernian followed up by Sanguinar.
When P4 started we both hid behind one of the giant Kael'thas statues in the room while I made sure I wasn't at 100% HP when Kael'thas became active. When he become active, I hit a Rune Tap to get agro on him while being out of LoS of him so he'd run to us (didn't have to run out there). When he got in agro range, the Ele Shaman was out of LoS on the other side of the pillar while I DPS'd down Kael'thas (making sure the staff buff stays up), after about 30 seconds or so Kael'thas will do a yell signaling he tried to MC, but due to LoS, it didn't work. This gave the Ele Shaman a free 15-20 seconds of DPS time (we played it safe as we weren't sure the exact timer on the MC). Just make sure to avoid the flame strikes as it still hits really hard (110k~) and use CDs on the first two Pyroblasts and interrupt the third.
Rinse and repeat with LoS and keeping the staff buff up and once you get to P5 the fight is easy. I imagine you could do this with anyone who can use a staff (though p3 might be a bit rough damage wise due to the stuns/fears/rends/etc) so I'd def recommend bringing someone who can heal.
Hope this helps others who are trying to 2 man this as being able to LoS the MC takes out the only difficult part of the fight (imo).

I was able to solo this earlier on live as a blood DK.
http://i.imgur.com/g8Zfx.jpg
What you need:
Bare minimum ilevel 359, all DPS gear. Stat priority Strength > Hit to spell cap > Expertise to softcap > Crit. Tank gear will make phases 2 and 3 extremely difficult because they will take too long.
PVP trinket ilevel 352+ (preferrably the crit one)
Standard blood tank spec centered around threat, 35/0/6, taking everything in blood except Hand of Doom, Butchery and Crimson Scourge. I went 2/3 Will of the Necropolis and 2/3 Scent of Blood.
Prime glyphs: Death Strike, Death and Decay, Heart Strike. Majors: AMS, Bone Shield, third doesn't matter. Minors: Blood Tap, HoW, Path of Frost
Prismatic Elixir
Elixir of Impossible Accuracy / enough hit from gear to be spell hitcapped
Runescroll of Fortitude, kings drums, strength food
I reforged into crit heavily as mastery is nearly worthless on this fight and diseases don't scale with haste
A'lar and Void Reaver should be dead, as well as all trash in the instance except for that in Solarian's room and the hallway on that side if you didn't bother killing her.
Engineering saves you some damage and gives you some damage boost, I recommend it. Parachute cloak, Synapse Springs and Nitro Boosts enchants
Strat is basically the same as Raegwyn's video from beta.
Phase 1:
Engage KT. Run out of the room and all the way to the beginning of the instance. The doors to KT's room don't close until the first Advisor activates. Thaladred is first. Tank him right by the raid entrance door with your back to the wall so you don't get knocked back out of the instance. Burn him down. Wait for Sanguinar, engage him about 30y inside from the raid door so you don't get feared out. Note the fear can be LOSed. Tank him where you killed Thaladred. Once he dies run back the way you came. Capernian will meet you just outside the doorway leading out of A'lar's room towards KT's room. AMS once you're within 30y of her and run past her, then run all the way back to the now-closed door leading into KT's room. With your back to this door, she -should- run into the previous doorway. Try and get her positioned so that you can stand between her and a wall and not be knocked back out of melee range. PVP trinket a conflagrate if necessary to do this. Burn her down. Telonicus is last, I took him just inside Void Reaver's room (which was empty since I'd killed him already) and killed him there. The first cast of Remote Toy -can- be LOSed here if you're lucky, so burn him quickly. Otherwise if you get the debuff, don't kill him until it has about 10 seconds left on it so that you're not being chain stunned at the start of...
Phase 2:
Run back to where you killed Capernian. You'll meet the weapons halfway. Target and kill the Cosmic Infuser first. Interrupt its "heal" cast and drag it and the melee weapons on top of the bow/staff of Disintegration so you can AOE them down with D&D / pestilenced diseases / heart strike cleave. Once the Cosmic Infuser is dead, target the Phaseshift Bulwark and just heart strike cleave off of it until it's dead. Kill the rest. You should probably have 5-10 seconds left before...
Phase 3:
The advisors resurrect. Stand between Capernian and the wall. I cast Army/Risen Ghoul at this point, AMSed just before she became targetable, blew cooldowns; Blood Fury, DRW etc. You
must
kill Capernian as quickly as possible, preferrably before you get conflagged. If you do, PVP trinket. Telonicus will arrive when Capernian is at about 20-30%. Finish her off, then burn him. Don't IBF if you get Remote Toy, you can outheal the bomb damage, just run back and forth through him and most of his casts will miss. He should die just as Sanguinar arrives. Start burning Sanguinar and moving yourself slowly back towards the hallway connecting A'lar's room with Void Reaver's. Tank him with your back facing a wall. He should die just as Thaladred arrives, you will be knocked back the moment Thaladred gets within 20y of you and if you had your back to a wall this shouldn't be a problem. He should die with 10-15 seconds left before...
Phase 4:
The moment Thaladred dies, run towards A'lar's room and be about 40-50y from the bottom of the ramp, between it and the doorway leading out of the instance. You may be able to bandage here. KT will cast his first Shock Barrier / Pyroblast somewhere on the ramp. AMS and run to him. AMS will absorb the first 1 1/2 Pyroblasts, interrupt the last one. Get diseases / D&D up, you will be disoriented at this point. The phoenix adds will kill themselves, so just cleave off of KT with heart strike. Try to avoid standing in the flamestrike AOE under where a phoenix spawns. Save PVP trinket for if your health gets low and you get disoriented. When the phoenix adds die and an egg spawns, switch to it and burn it as quickly as possible to avoid it rebirthing and knocking you back 40 yards. When KT is about to cast Shock Barrier again, AMS with a second or so to go, this will absorb the first Pyroblast and you should be able to burn through the shield to interrupt the next. Repeat until KT reaches 50% and transitions to phase 5.
Note that KT does a mind control in Phase 4. KT -can- MC you, but only during the disorient and only if bloodworms or a ghoul are out during that time, and only if one of them resisted the disorient cast and gained aggro. I haven't been MCed yet over 3 solo kills and the ~20ish attempts I put in at first but you can simply spec out of worms if the risk bothers you.
Phase 5:
KT will run all the way from where you are back to his room to do the RP / graphics that he does between these two phases. Note that
he is still attackable during this time while he is running
. He runs a lot faster than you, so get diseases up and use Nitro Boosts to catch up to him to get more damage in if you can. If they fail no loss. You can get him down to 40% this way.
KT will go through the RP. When he casts his first Gravity Lapse of the phase, he will teleport you to him (he will be just outside the door leading into his room) from wherever you are in the instance, and you'll have the flight buff. Refresh diseases, drop a D&D under him and start flying back to A'lar's room, don't bother AMSing or worrying about the damage he does midair. Try not to land before the debuff falls off. If the debuff falls off while you're at a great height, parachute cloak or Path of Frost to negate fall damage. Get back down the ramp to where you started Phase 4, you can bandage here. Strangulate the first fireball cast, AMS and tank him at the bottom of the ramp, burn him as much as possible before the next Gravity Lapse. When he does Gravity Lapse fly away from him, drop a D&D under him and any adds and refresh diseases on him. Wait for Gravity Lapse to end before reengaging in melee. The only thing that can really kill you in this phase is Flamestrike, which can hit for 80K or so. If you're disoriented and see the flamestrike animation appearing under you, PVP trinket, otherwise you should be fine.
Collect your free gold, loot and hopefully phoenix mount.
ed: Sound no longer bugs out.

Differences on live from Raegwyn video (which was on Cataclysm Beta) and misconceptions debunked
You
cannot
LOS Capernian's fireballs/conflagrate in the hallway leading to KT's room. You can LOS them around a major corner but you can't use the crystals in the walls or the archways to LOS.
Conflagrate
can
be cast on a Risen Ghoul. However, the ability appears to be a small AOE, as I was also disoriented for the full duration of the spell along with my ghoul. Just PVP trinket it in phase 3 and burn her down before she casts it again.
Remote Toy
can
be cast on a Risen Ghoul but this occurs very rarely and should not be counted on.
You
cannot
LOS Pyroblast or Fireball casts on the ramp. If you watch Raegwyn's video you will see he's not LOSing any of the casts, he's simply AMSing at good times and had the bonus arcane torrent interrupt from being a blood elf.
You
cannot
range Pyroblast. You can range Fireball but I have no idea why you'd want to.
You
will not
be mind controlled in phase 4 if bloodworms or a risen ghoul are out,
unless you are disoriented
. KT cannot mind control his tank. The disorient is an aggro wipe, so if worms or a ghoul are out and he casts Arcane Disruption, you can be MCed during the 10 seconds it lasts.
Magic resistances suck. Conflagrate will land regardless of resistance, as will Arcane Disruption. Thaladred's silence and Telonicus' Remote Toy
can
be resisted, but neither ability is particularly deadly.
PVP trinket works on Conflagrate and Arcane Disruption.
Mirror of Broken Images sucks. Even with 50% arcane/fire resistance for 10 seconds, most casts would land and I still found myself dying. A PVP trinket is infinitely more valuable for this fight than Mirror is because getting out of Arcane Disruption lets you self-heal yourself to full or interrupt Fireball/Pyroblast casts that would otherwise have killed you.
Cardboard assassin
does not
taunt any of the Advisors or KT. Its only use is placing it in the hallway outside where you're killing Capernian so that Telonicus sees it before you and casts Remote Toy on it. However this requires a lot of luck and timing, and you'd be better off simply using that time to DPS her down before Telonicus reaches you.

Did this today with 4 - all in a good selection of 359 gear.
Mage
Rogue
Paladin (tank)
Shaman (heals)
We had the rogue grab the dagger, the shaman grabbed the staff. We tried it without the staff a couple of times, but the fearing etc... was annoying, and cutting into dps. The staff made things much easier.
When the 4 bosses spawned at once, we used the following kill order, and found it to be the most effective:
1) All on Thaladred
2) tank/rogue on Sanguinar - mage on Capernian
3) All on Talonicus
To be honest, everything up to actually fighting Kael was pretty trivial. Once at Kael, the RNG becomes the largest factor. Kael can MC 2-3 people. For us, it seemed to always be three. If he MC'd three, I'd have to bubble, and then use other tricks to stay alive. Our best attempts came when I had resistance aura up, and Kael only MC'd one person (since he's supposed to do 2-3, I'm guessing the others resisted - not sure if the fact I had resistence aura up or not helped - it might have been purely co-incidental. I just know for future attempts, I'll have it up!).
On our successful attempt, he only MC'd once and chose the mage who just blocked it off. We did not have a Pheonix spawn. The key thing here is really to save every single DPS cooldown you have and be in position to nuke Kael like no tomorrow. You have to get him to 50% as soon as possible. Lust/Hero is critical. Once you get him to 50%, the fight is won... the next phase he does little damage, and you can relax and dps him to his death.
No mount this time... but we'll be back Kael. >:D

I was able to solo Kael with my troll MM Hunter, Dissaster on the Blackrock server.
After a week of learning the encounter solo, I finally was able to down Kael today. The hardest part for me was the transition from phase 3 to phase 4. If he MCs me before I can get LOS then I have to start over. Once I was able to predict the MCs, phase 4 wasn't too bad. Once phase 5 starts it's a lock. Very satisfying victory. no mount drop, but I'll be back every week. Here is a 2 part video of the encounter, I was sloppy in phase 4, but pulled it off:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y9kCpYDI0I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4LLbDu1lx4
Phase 3 is challenging as well, it took me some time to master how to control each of the advisors. The main issue is getting agro on your turtle, and kiting Thaladred while doing max dps to beat the phase timer. You also have to make sure not to get knocked out of range of your turtle or he despawns and they all come for you.
This was by far the most epic solo encounter I've ever done. Fun, and very challenging solo.

3 attempts on Kael. Forceflex - Draka. Feral Druid 0/32/9. i350. Cleared bosses/trash prior. Buffs: Exp food, Mastery/Prismatic (200 Resist w/ Mixology) MoTW, Fort II. Reforged dodge to mastery (75% Sav D) to eat hits later on.
1st shot: Parked Thaladred & Sanguinar @ front door let bleed fall off @ 4 stacks. Conflaged soon as I hit ramp in Al'ars' room. After a min of chain Conflags/Arc Burst every time I lept to 2nd tier/ramp, I made it round the corner & got to Reaver side door. Capernian downed w/ 6 secs I had between each conflag. Took Telonicus into Reavers room. Dropped him w/ 2 seconds left in debuff. Phase 2, Cos Infuser 1st: Bullwerk 2nd. Skull Bashed heals, Zerk spam/AOE rot. HP plummeted, all CDs used, 2 weaps up & zero time to look for staff when Cap repopped & offered to rez me @ the GY.
Rounds 2 / 3 went smoother after adding PVP trink but RNG on getting conflaged B2B is heinous & takes up much needed time. Free Action pot is useless on disorient Effect, no AMS, Glyphed DP. A few things to try 1: if Mirror + Sindra's Fang & the 200 resist I had would be enough (728 res=50%)/ if Conflag is off the Binary resist. 2: Macro an auto equip /use after loot for staff staff & pray. 3: Likely a DPS burn (>7500 DPS) to churn through from one mob to another. Anyone have a creative suggestion/tip or any other druids have sucess here?

2-manned him earlier tonight without any of the weapons or special gear changes. I tanked him on my DK in Blood Tank spec with Dps gear and Unholy Presence, using DS only on Frost/Unholy runes and HS'n on Blood and Death runes. No defensive CDs were used, only offensive to speed the fight along. My partner was an off-spec Boomkin with no special changes either. We killed Thaladred and Sanguinar at the entrance, The Mage was killed at the entrance to Kael's room were it is blocked by lasers, with Telonicus dying down the ramp from were the Mage was killed. Weapons were killed next to the Mage and she was nuked using offensive CDs, making the rest of the council trivial. Kael was tanked in Al'ar's room. I allowed my Boomkin guildie to get the MC and gripped him in then killed him myself. Had no need for the PvP trinket or any defensive CDs, just nuked the eggs then him, MF made sure he was intterupted. First 2-man I did, was a great experience plus i got the mount so a nice end to a night of BWD heroic progression. Highly recommend you try it, just be aware of the fights mechanics. He is not a WOTlK boss and even at 85 he can and will kill you if you underestimate him.

Two-manned this just a bit ago, here's the details:
85 Frost Death Knight (~ilvl 350)
85 Resto Shaman (~ilvl 355)
Basically used the strat
Raegwyn used in his solo video he made during Cataclysm beta
on a premade DK with full ilvl 356 DPS raid gear in Blood spec. The main difference is that my character is still wearing half blues, and because of this I brought a friend to heal me, and to make it faster I stayed in Frost spec.
After Phase 4 starts, the healer hid in the entrance hall doorway that leads to Al'ar's room, and I tank Kael'thas so that I'm in LOS of the healer, but Kael'thas is out of LOS of the healer at the same time so that he never gets mind controlled. The healer also used and activated the staff to make it that much easier.
DPS'd him down to 50% this way, and at that point you've basically won.

Two-manned
him this evening as a
Ret Paladin and a Boomkin
using modified strategies found in these comments (thanks guys.)
First off, I cleared the whole instance beforehand for gold so there wasn't any trash up. The strategy took a few tries to perfect, but it's fairly easy once you get the hang of it. I'll try to describe it the best I can while being brief.
Phase 1
Start the encounter and immediately run to the instance portal. Wait for Thaladred to make his appearance several minutes later and take him out. The second boss will begin making his way to you - stay where you are and kill him once he gets to you.
Once he dies, immediately start running back towards Kael's room via the Voidreaver side of the instance. You'll run into the caster boss at the top of the ramp in A'lar's room. I just judged her and we ran right past. Take the ramp back up to Kael's room as far as you can go (the door into his room will be sealed since the encounter has started) and LoS her as best as you can into the little ante-chamber, then kill her (I had my back to a wall so the knockback wouldn't throw me out of melee range).
Once she dies, immediately start running to Voidreaver's room and the last boss (the engineer) will be close behind. We took him to the far back wall to give us as much time as possible later. Once positioned, take him out - if anyone gets remote toy, wait until it has about 10-15 seconds left before killing him since it can proc at really annoying times. Once he dies, immediately start running back towards Kael's room.
Phase 2
On your way back towards Kael's room (where you killed the ranged boss) you'll run into the weapons. Like previous comments said, I targeted the cosmic infuser first and interrupted it whenever it started to cast a heal. I made sure I had aggro on everything and my Boomkin friend went nuts with the AE.
The boomkin picked up the staff and equiped it, making sure to use it so we had the buff. We ran back up to where we killed the ranged boss and nuked her down again as soon as she spawned. Right as we finished, the engineer from Voidreaver's room showed up and we took him out. Shortly after, the second boss we killed next to Thaladred showed up and we nuked him down easily.
Once those three were dead, we went back into A'lar's room. We met Thaladred and finished him off.
Phase 3
I positioned myself at the mouth of the door that connect's A'lar's room to the hallway that leads to Voidreaver. The boomkin sat to my left, out of LoS from the hall. Kael will eventually make his way down and I tanked him in that exact spot - as long as the boomkin stayed out of LoS, he would not get mind controlled.
Interrupt as many fireballs as you can.
Occasionally you'll see Kael yell something that signals he attempted to use a mind control. Afterwards, the druid would pop out to DPS some or grab a phoenix off me. We also made sure to kill the phoenix egg each time so we wouldn't get overwhelmed.
When Kael puts up shock barrier, I just pop Divine Protection since I'll be eating the first pyro blast, but his shield can easily be taken down in time to interrupt the second. Using 3 holy power to heal myself usually, we widdled him down to 50%.
Phase 4
Kael will start running back towards his room. You can follow and DPS him during this time without any threat. Once he makes it all the way back to his room, he'll do some RP crap while you sit around twiddling your thumbs. Eventually he'll port you to just outside his room and cast gravity lapse on you. At this point it seemed like he stopped casting Mind Control so when he came back out we just nuked him down.
300g, some epic junk and no mount. But with only needing 2 people, it shouldn't be hard to farm this guy weekly. I hope this helps anyone willing to try - it was late when I wrote this and I'm pretty tired, so I apologize for any redundancy and the fact this looks like it was written by a 12 year old, lol.
Thanks to previous posters for the suggestions on how to solo this guy. They all helped with making this strategy.
Good luck!

With a bit more gear you can skip the entire kiting through the instance strategy as a DK and just do the entire fight in his room.
You will still need to kite Capernian to a far back corner and have the other 3 advisors tanked on the opposite end of the room as far away as possible in phase 1, but the fight is more or less won once she is dead in phase 3, if she dies before the others reach you and fear/stun you.

I'm copying this, it's not mine
"By Demosthenes21 (3·2) on 01/28/2009 (Patch 3.0.8)
Just did this boss successfully last night with 9 players at level 80, took us a few attempts and we had to change dps orders a bit since the raid was smaller than the encounter was originally designed for. This is how we did it, and a slightly different strat for level 80's in a smaller raid.
Raid comp:
2 tanks (preferably 1 prot warr at least)
2 full time heals
1 offheals (moonkin / ele shammy)
4 ranged dps
Our gear level was approx. full T7 / mostly T7.5. Able to down 3 drake Sartharion with all the dpsers. You may need to bring additional dpsers if yours aren't that geared, however when new content patches come out, this won't be as much of a concern.
We wiped a few times trying to 8 man the fight without an elemental shaman, but we brought him in and the random spot chain heals and the heroism/bloodlust helped a ton in phase 4. Having 2 healers is preferred because one healer might have to move, accidentally die, or some other unforseen event. The actual damage going around the raid is trivial, and we had 1 healer healing phase 4 for some time before a mind controlled player feared him.
I recommend using a prot warr for phase 4 because they are extremely mobile for phase 4, and can easily dispel MC's without accidentally killing someone. Most players can easily take several devastates without it being a serious issue. Any tank can now MT Kael now though, the pyroblast was a joke and no cooldowns were needed to survive being hit.
Phase 1: Introduction
Not much to this phase, none of the mobs hit particularly hard and they all dropped extremely quickly. For Thaldred, the melee were able to walk up to him and start dpsing without any care if he turned around and started attacking them.
Actually positioning the mobs so they are in good places for phase 3 was also not much of a concern for us. We did attempt to have Capernian positioned on the right side of the room, and everything else on the left side, but with the speed of the dps it was not entirely successful.
Phase 2: Legendary Weapons
We had enough dps to completely destroy the weapons with about 10 seconds to spare before phase 3 started. I would recommend keeping the prot warr on the Cosmic Infuser, as it does heal itself frequently. Shield Bashes, Concussion Blows, Shockwaves are all needed to stop it from healing while all the weapons are being aoe'd down. Also, having him pick up the Staff of Disintegration early on, silence it, and drag it into the aoe helps a lot. The staff likes to stay in it's current spot and just cast at people unless someone does somethin about it.
We had a paladin tank to pick up all the other weapons (cept the bow, which was still done by a hunter). We even left the Devastation in there with the rest of the weapon as nothing there really hit for much.
DO NOT FORGET TO EQUIP THE WEAPONS. We did have some fresh people on the run who didn't understand that the weapons became lootable when they died, and required being looted and equipped. Not having enough casters with the staff in the raid will make or break the fight still. Phase 3 is serious still.
If you have a good number of single target dps in the raid, this is the dps order for the weapons I would recommend:
Staff of Disintegration -> Cosmic Infuser -> Infinity Blade -> Phaseshift Bulwark -> Warp Slicer.
For us, the bow died somewhere in the mix with the hunter nuking it down and the aoe hitting it. We never really had to worry about having to dps it at all.
Phase 3: Advisors
If you do not have most to all of the weapons down at this point, then it will likely be a wipe and you need more dps.
We were forced to change the dps order of the Advisors because of the annoyance of their abilities to a 9 man raid. Capernian was a serious threat to the raid because she would chain-conflag someone (often a tank, occasionally a heals or unlucky dps). There isn't always a staff that is going to be near in a raid that small so we nuked her first, while keeping an eye on thaldred and kiting him around as needed. If he did aggro to someone important, a bop works wonders for keeping them alive.
Killing Capernian is going the be the tough part of phase 3, her abilities severely restrict movement and make the whole phase rather annoying to deal with till she is dead. We didn't have to burn our heroism to down her, but if your raid is having trouble that is a good option.
Next up is Thaldred, just as much of a joke in phase 3 as phase 1, it took us a little bit longer to down him though.
Either Sanguinar or Telonicus will work next, neither is a very serious concern. We even had an add still up beating on the MT going into phase 4.
Phase 4: Taking matters into one's own hands
This was a bit chaotic for us the first few tries, but we eventually got the hang of it. At least 2 people should have a set of the daggers to dispel the Mind Control with. The prot warrior was the primary person to dispel the MC's for us, because of the mobility the Warbringer talent gives, and 30 yard taunts bring players over rather easily. A backup is needed in case the warrior does get MC'd himself though.
Fear should be avoided on MC'd people unless the person dispelling them got it also. It is very hard to chase down a player and attack them if they are running around randomly.
For the Phoenix adds, we had the prot warrior also tank those at the same time as dispelling Mind Controls. The Phoenixes are still level 70, and their aoe is of little concern as it nearly always misses. DPS should still nuke it down and then the egg it leaves behind though, eventually they will become a dangerous nuisance if you let them multiply and wander around randomly.
Do not forget to move out of the Flame Strikes! Those hurt a lot a 70, and they will hurt a lot at 80.
You can have any tank on the boss really, Pyroblast hits for 20-25k, which is less than our tanks had unbuffed. It is still nice to interrupt it as you get the chance, and use the shield to absorb the first one.
Heroism / Bloodlust should be saved for 80% here, give a good amount of time to make sure all the advisors or down, everyone is in a good spot and is comfortable.
Phase 5: True Power (lol)
The fight is won at this point, this phase is a joke at 80, especially with a 9 man raid. When he does Gravity Lapse, everyone should spread out a little bit as to not be right next to each other. Also don't go too high up in the air as when the debuff runs out, you will fall to the ground and take fall damage. The actual raid damage is next to nothing in the air, so nobody should be dying at this point.
Phoenixes will continue to spawn in this phase, and should still be killed until boss reaches 15% (ish). After that is is safe to straight up nuke Kael and go for the loots, only worrying about the adds afterwards.
1 minor thing to note about Heroism / Bloodlust, it is a risk using it in phase 4 as he can mind control your shaman and buff himself with it. He wont be much more of a threat, but you lose out on your heroism. If you are worried about this happening then burn it in phase 3 right at the start.
Good luck and happy hunting for the Ashes!"

Duo'd as a Protection Warrior and a Disc Priest. Using similar tactics to others, but I'll stick them here as we found this worked best for us:
1. Cleared all trash and first phoenix boss in the instance. I did all of this as Fury with heroic quality gear. Clear everything between the entrance and Kael'thas.
2. Switched back to a Protection Spec in DPS gear. Ate mastery food and used a Prismatic Elixir to reduce my magic damage. Engaged Kael'thas (run near him) and then move all the way back to the instance entrance and wait.
3. Kill the first two NPCs by the door. Don't stand too close as one does a knock-back and the other fears. Getting thrown out of the instance is bad this way!
4. Once the first two mobs are dead, run back to Kael'thas. You will engage the fire lady half-way, aggro her but keep moving back to Kael'thas. The door will be locked, but kill her as close to it as possible. She's a pain.
5. Kill the next NPC around the same place.
6. Line of site the weapons by standing to the side of the door by Kael'thas (still locked). Mark up and use this kill order:
- Cosmic Infuser (interrupt the heals too)
- Staff of Disintegration
- Phaseshift Bulwark (I took this third as it's the hardest to kill from incidental AoE).
Whilst killing all these, use cleave and other AoE moves liberally to get them all down fast.
Important:
Someone needs to loot and equip the Staff of Disintegration. This is key to winning this fight. Once equipped, they need to activate it's use function. You now cannot be affected by Conflagration or Remote Toy.
7. Once the weapons are all dead, the original NPCs will engage. Single target nuke Grand Astromancer Capernian (the lady). She does a knock-back which bugs often teleporting you to the entrance of the instance. To avoid this, never have your back to a wall.
8. Nuke the remaining NPCs in the same kind of area as they appear. You shouldn't have any problems with the remainder. Once the last mob is dead, run back to the large room in which Al'ar was killed.
9. Kael'thas will run towards you. Tank him in the doorway. It's critical that your healer line of site him at all times. We did this by having me stand in the doorway and Kael'thas to the left of it. The healer stood further down the corridor. Other variations will work just as well, but it's critical that he never gets to mind control the other player - it's probably game over if that happens.
10. Nuke him down, using cleave and other AoE abilities to take out eggs and Phoenixes. Don't stand in the fire and just endure this phase. It takes a while.
11. At 50% he will run back to where you pulled him. Run back with him and wait by the door (it's still locked ofc :)). This is a good time to hymn of hope if mana is a problem.
12. Once he comes back, he will do a gravity lapse on you. Just move away and use any ranged abilities you have. A Disc Priest with an Archangel Build is useful here. Don't engage him whilst he's casting Nether Beam - which he may do so just after the gravity phase completes.
13. Tank and spank him this way, moving away during gravity lapse. As in phase 4, AoE the Phoenix and eggs with cleave and other AoE moves. Depending on your luck/dps, the staff may expire from your healer. It won't make much of a difference except you'll get CCd a bit more. Remember to re-equip your proper weapon if it does happen...
Hope this helps. We've got this place on easy mode farm now for the mount. The whole boss fight can last upwards of 15 minutes and a full clear of trash and Al'ar about 20-30... so come prepared to spend a bit of time here whilst you master the phases.
Good luck!

2-manned with Fury warrior and Resto Druid.
Tried several strats including kiting to the entrance which didn't go well for us since something would always go wrong when Kael was finally active.
The strat which worked well for us was kill everything in the actual room.
Phase 1: Kited
亵渎者萨拉德雷
furthest away from Kael then killed. We let
萨古纳尔男爵
run to us midway and killed him on the spot. Then
星术师卡波妮娅
was where it got "fun"
We found it best to position
星术师卡波妮娅
between Kael's statue on the right side of the room. We kept running around until the mob was in between the statue and the wall. (This becomes very important for phase 3)
Finally
首席技师塔隆尼库斯
came into play and the only thing we focused on was his toy buff. We brought his health down until 10k hp then we waited for the toy buff to hit 20 seconds on the last person then killed him.
Phase 2: Kill order: Staff (had druid equip and buff asap), Slicer (to stop the bleed debuff), Cosmo (heals weapons), Then the rest in w/e order they come by. When Phase 3 came close to beginning we made sure we were positioned where we placed
星术师卡波妮娅
. Then we killed off what we could before the adds popped.
**Sidenote** If the advisors pop before you down the rest of the weapons focus on the mage and kill her with everything you got
Phase 3: We focused on killing the mage first, make sure you have the staff buff on or everything goes to hell. Once Thal finally made his way toward us we started kiting him around the room avoiding his damage and bleed effect. Killed the other two as we kited burning small CDs and watched for Phase 4.
Phase 4: Very important that the healer runs like hell when Kael engages if you are not on his platform to get aggro. We found getting Kael where the mage was placed was our best shot. Once in position we had the healer LoS on the other side of the statue making her immune to MC. Avoid the flame circles, kill the adds and eggs asap, then focus on Kael. The adds are your main focus once they are down take down the eggs.
Phase 5: He runs away and goes back to his platform and its pretty much cake. Fly around once you engage him again and punch his lights out.
Both toons had an avg ilvl of 348
As I stated above we tried several methods until we found one which worked with our style. Phase 3 is the toughest part of the match. Phase 4 was rough b/c MC kept catching me (Fury warrior) off guard and I'd murder the healer.
If you are looking to farm Kael find the method which works for you and make sure you have the time and effort to put into figuring out the right fit.
Good luck!

Duo'd earlier as Arms Warrior/Holy Paladin earlier.
I didn't read the previous comments so I didn't know you could pull the adds around the instance.
So if you don't feel like doing all of that here's how we did it
Phase 1: Kill the adds
Phase 2: Kill the weapons. I looted
瓦解法杖
and
无尽之刃
. I equipped the staff and used it as soon as I saw KT's yell
Phase 3: Recklessness/Trinket/Bladestorm took all the adds down to around half. I killed all of them and since the mage does that annoying arcane burst, the pally spammed exorcism to kill her.
Phase 4: Ignored the birds and eggs and dps'd Kael down. I would switch to the dagger and cleave when the pally got mc'd, then switch back to the staff.
Phase 5: Same as the last, but I didn't keep the staff equipped. I just trinketed the disorient.
It took around 3 tries due to stupid mistakes (me not equipping the staff before the adds came.) Using the staff as a Warrior wasn't that bad. I hit between 12-17k.. but next time I might just keep my normal sword equipped and just eat the disorients on the last 2 phases. I mainly kept it on so we could just finally kill him instead of wiping again :P
Ashes didn't drop though. Oh well, there's always next time. Hopefully this helps someone who can't solo it/didn't wanna try cuz their healer friend is a pally :P

Two manned this today as enhancement shaman/discipline priest. Was really simple when we got our tactics sorted. The main issues we encountered were 1) the staff and mace going a seperate way from the other weapons and pulling trash we hadn't cleared 2) issues killing weapons on time (which was sorted by just popping all cooldowns, including BL on the weapons 3) a slight panic on my behalf in phase 5 with the nether beams.
We used the positioning tactic of getting Thaladred/Sanguinar down to and killed at entrance, move up to outside Kael's room for Capernian, back to A'lar's room for Telonicus, and killed the weapons beside Capernian's corpse. Priest would equip and use the staff, essentially trivialising P3.
MCs were a non-issue. Initially we tried a tactic where I tanked Kael in the doorway to Alar's room, while my priest would stand so he could reach me but was LoSing MC, however, Flamestrikes plus phoenix death knockbacks meant I had to move position too much. I found with self heals and interrupting every single Fireball, I could take him fine on my own, so the priest would just stand far out of LoS from both of us, and when Kael shouted out a cue he had attempted to Mind Control ("Obey me!") the priest would move into LoS, heal me up, shield, etc, then after 20 secs or so move away again. With this tactic we had 0 mind controls, as the 'main tank' is not targetted by them.
We were also never really sure what to do with the Phoenixes/Eggs but I sort of took to just killing them when they were close. However we ironed it all out and killed him after 4 or 5 attempts. Unfortunately no phoenix, but I'm really looking forward to getting this on farm every week until luck heads our way
EDIT: 22/08, after about 20 duo runs Ashes finally dropped for us! Honestly could not believe it and was over the moon to win it. So keep at it everyone who's running this weekly, eventually luck will head your way and make all of this tedious grinding worth it :)

The blood shield change to DKs this patch didn't affect the difficulty of this boss much. It's still trivial for a DK in ilevel 359+ gear to do.

Soloed this today as a Blood DK, 35/0/6, only 5 epics. I only had a few dps pieces on, maybe 7, the rest was all tank gear. I reforged all my gear to crit. My ilvl was 351. I used the strategy Raegwyn used in his video. It took a lot of attempts, but I got him down, and thats all I cared for.

Here's something a little different for my fellow DK soloists out there!
I have done this as blood using the Raegwyn method, but I had an idea and wanted to to try something of my own creation. So I started testing.
To my surprise, and honestly going against all expectations, a glyphed Pillar of frost WILL make you immune to, well, everything in this fight.
I used it to SLAUGHTER Capernian, since she can't knock me back and I am immune to her conflag for 20 seconds, it is laughably easy.
It can be used to ignore fear, though that is a mild annoyance at best for us of course
It's biggest and most game-changing use is that when you time it right in phase 4 you can immune 2 of his disorients with one cd! If you use this with AMS timing and a trinket you will NEVER spend more than 1-2 seconds disoriented. Timing is key of course, so it may take a few tries to get the exact timing of when to use it to immune two of the disorients with one use.
Oddly - and this may just be my frankly terrible dps gear talking - I did not always get all of the weapons down as frost before the advisors got up, despite doing so as blood. I am not exactly sure why, as I would expect frost's aoe power to exceed bloods, but maybe not?
In phase 5, something odd happened when I used Pillar to immune his disorient. When I used Pillar he would run in circles around me not casting until he got to an exact range, I have NO idea why he does this, but naturally I took him into a tight hallway and used pillar, and got 20 seconds of free dps time without him casting at me.
This will of course not work come 4.2... since they are changing the dark succor glyph... but if you guys want to have some fun destroying them, have at you!
My spec was an odd one, 10/31/0, going for a full 3/3 Scent of Blood. Since you will be deathstriking far more often than you will be obliterating, you need a way to make up the runic power, and with a frost dk, 3 melee hits happens in about 2 seconds (if that) so you generate an absurd amount of Runic Power with this talent. Glyphing Pillar of Frost is required, and I advise the AMS glyph as well. But given most of the Majors are terrible anyway, this should not be much of a deterrent.
-Have fun, Lycoris (U.S. Shattered Hand)

Just 3 manned this pretty smoothly as Prot War (using dagger) Resto Druid (using staff) and a Shadow Priest. Phase 4, took Kael behind the right pillar on his platform, had the healer LoS'd from Kael and he avoided nearly every single MC while keeping hots rolling on me. Whenever the DPS got MC'd, I'd charge and spam devastate on him until MC broke. Healer never really went low on mana. I tanked and killed the fire birds and eggs myself while the dps burned boss.
All the other phases are pretty easy. Had DPS range tank the Mage add during Phase 3.

For ppl who are curious about the fight in 4.2 i can say it's the same, the healing from Dark Succor obviously aint working so you have to be extra cautious about your health, but if you're used to the fight it should not be any trouble.

It should be known that there are 2 extra abilities used by Kael not mentioned in the overview (I could not find either in wowhead's database, but here are the two closest matches I could find.)
烈焰打击
烈焰风暴
Both of them leave a yellow-orange circle on the ground with 3 spheres flying around that detonates after a few seconds.
The first of the two is periodically used in the fourth phase. This deals a decent amount of damage upon detonation, probably 10k-20k or so, and drops a flamestrike looking circle which deals about 2k damage every second you stand in it for 8 seconds. This isn't a huge deal (compared to
火球术
, etc. as this has a cooldown to it and is avoidable) but still does significant damage.
The second on the other hand is periodically used in the fifth phase. While this one does NOT leave a damaging circle upon detonation, this one seems to hit for about
100k-130k damage
if you are in its detonation range. This is a
huge
deal and will easily kill anyone if combined with one of Kael's fireballs.
These are both very easy to see and avoid giving the amount of space players have to move around, however Kael has a way of casting this right under your feet after he casts
奥术干扰
. This combination can easily mess people trying to solo this and cause them to die (in either phase) 15+ minutes into the fight, so watch for it and plan to use your PvP trinkets accordingly!
I will try to find more exact information when I can get it, as I am still wiping on it this week (after 4+ hours straight of attempts, yuck) due to bad luck with this and phase 3 stuns.
Edit #1
Woohoo, got boss down first attempt after, mount dropped!
I didn't find any info on the damage each flamestrike deals, however I did find more about the cooldowns of them.
4th Phase
A flamestrike spawns under you every time a phoenix is spawned. The flamestrike lasts 3 seconds before it activates, and the middle of it begins to make a fire animation as its activation starts.
5th Phase
These flamestrikes are on a separate cooldown with the phoenix spawn, with an approximately 25 second cooldown. Two flamestrikes should spawn between each gravity lapse. Same animation as Phase 4 except slightly larger, again 3 second activation time. When this flamestrike is spawned however, Kael shoots a "flaming arrow" at it. The flamestrike will detonate upon being hit by the arrow, however it will always take 3 seconds to hit it.
The area you take damage in both flamestrikes is actually smaller than the animation, however don't expect this fact to save your life!

This guy is a PAIN at 85!
We all thought we could just nuke and win but as it turns out: The MC ability wipes us, Fully kitted raid players got the MC every time and 1 shotted people in greens or blues. Also the dagger doesn't seem to work with certain abilities at 85 so it may be best to just use auto-attack to break the MC. So if you're doing this in a raid with ANY amount of 85's...be very careful and in a full 85 raid be sure everyone has a similar level of gear.

P4 is a nightmare in 4.2 for hunter solo due to pet pathing being bugged beyond all recognition (try getting your pet to stay still and attack in the position you want).
Already killed him 2 times and was gonna get my 3rd 5 mins ago and learned something new: got to phase 5 and the $%^&er MCs me right as he lands. Take note, phase 5 starts AFTER he lands so don't make the same mistake, continue LOS-ing.

Completed him this week with my druid tank and an elemental shammy.
She had to go elemental, cause I couldn't kill the advisers in time, but in the last 2 phases, she mainly healed me.
I used Raegwyn's strategy for placing the advisers and had the shammy take the staff + using
治疗之泉图腾雕文
.

This is soloable as a Balance Druid at 85, albeit quite difficult. I managed to do it today after spending some time refining my strategy. The video I am attaching is not me, but it should serve as proof and a template for others wishing to give it a go. I did it in a similar fashion, though I did use different placement for the advisors so they were more staggered in phase 3.
Part 1:

Part 2:

The main advice I would give to those seeking to attempt this is be sure to pick up mana talents and rotating between the staff and mace in phase 4 and 5 is essential.

For those DKs worrying about the mind control during P4 and whether or not to spec out of Bloodworms, here's a relevant bit of info:
As previously stated, he will never MC his target (the MT) but his Disorient will cause you to lose aggro, allowing anything that attacks him to become the "MT" for the duration (and since you're no longer the MT you'll get MC'd and he'll reset).
HOWEVER,
his disorient will also hit the bloodworms around him, and since they can't attack him there will be no one to take his aggro, and he'll just continue to attack you while you're disoriented
.
So far I've soloed 5 times and I've never had a problem with MC's, I've had bloodworms out almost every single disorient and they all got disoriented aswell, every time. They also eat lots of random spells (maybe conflag?), and the healing helps. I'd say the chance of you getting MC'd because you specced into them is much lower than the chance of you dying because you didn't have their healing or spell fodder.
TL;DR: Do spec into bloodworms, getting MC'd is HIGHLY unlikely.

I know for sure that there's a druid who soloed Kael'thas as feral, as I've read about him in a forum. I can't recall his name though, I just remember that he's from the USA and he plays in a hardcore guild.
There might be other brave ferals around though, ferals that have overcome this challenge but didn't mention it anywhere afterwards.
I have successfully soloed him on july 11, after spending over a month trying every time I had some time off my guild's raids or my officer's duties.
Unfortunately, I cannot record videos on my current laptop, hence I can just produce screenshots of my successful try.
There's no point in writing the strategy I used here, as it would result in a very long text. Plus, the strategy is not only about the kill order or positioning of the mobs. It's also and mostly about the proper timing and use of our feral abilities, thus a video commentary would be a lot more useful and explicative.
Consumables used for the fight:
Fortune Cookie
Scroll of Fortitude II
Prismatic Elixir
Mythical Healing Potion
Dense Embersilk Bandage
Charged Crystal Focus / Healthstone
Don't underestimate Charged Crystal Foci. They might heal a mere 2000hp (which can crit though), but every little bit helps, and sometimes that little bit can mean the difference between life and death, expecially if one doesn't still have a great gear available and if he's still learning the encounter. So many times I died when I had like 4 seconds left on my Frenzied Regeneration in other encounters, and that mere 2000hp from the Crystal would have saved me. :)
As for the spec I used, after I mastered the encounter I sticked to my standard tank spec.
When I was still getting confident with the fight though, I found this spec and glyphs to be very effective:
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/talent#0ZdbGrourzRckMcu:0MmzfimMz
I used a dps oriented gear. A high health pool won't save you if you don't execute the strategy in a proper way. Plus, the higher the dps, the shorter the phases, and shorter phases means higher chances of surviving.
Here are a few screenshots from my first kill:

Good luck to all the die-hard ferals out there who are fighting with teeth and claws against Kael'thas instead of taking the easier route as balance druids! :)

How to defeat Kael'thas as a
Hunter
What you should have:
A standard
PvE Beastmastery specialization
A turtle or beetle pet with
the appropriate tanking talents
A second pet of any kind, with a fully-fleshed out specialization
An average item level of at least around 360, enchanted and gemmed
A
Flask of the Winds
and
Drums of Forgotten Kings
Phase 1
In this phase, Kael'thas' advisors will come at you one by one.
Thaladred
is first. He moves slowly, knocks his target back periodically, and applies a bleed at melee range. Your goal is to kill him as far away from the other members as possible. Set your non-tank pet to passive to make sure he keeps following you. When he reaches the back of the room, kill him and run to the front.
Next is
Sanguinar
. He merely casts a 35-yard radius fear. He will cast fear a few seconds after he spawns, which you should counter immediately with Bestial Wrath. Try to position him inside one of the two purple circles near the stairs as he is about to die.
Third is
Capernian
, who chucks fireballs, casts an AoE knockback that slows, and a short-range disorient. Again, try to position her near the circle before killing her. Make sure you stay in range of her attacks, so that if your pet gets disoriented she doesn't need to move to reach you.
The final advisor in this phase is
Telonicus
, who essentially casts a debuff called Remote Toy that causes its victim to be stunned for 3 seconds at random intervals for a minute. He will use this ability
exactly
after
two
or
three
Bomb casts. Position him in the same circle as before, and half a second after he casts his second Bomb, hit Deterrence, and do not remove it. It should last until just after his third bomb is cast, making sure that Remote Toy
cannot
affect you. As he is about to die, move onto the platform, and place an Explosive Trap at the top of the stairs. Kill Telonicus, and immediately dismiss your pet, summoning your tank pet as soon as you can thereafter.
Phase 2
Ideally, the latter three advisors will be piled up in the aforementioned circle at this point. Several weapons will spawn to attack you as soon as Telonicus is killed. Make sure Misdirection is on your pet, and let the trap tick a few times.
Do not cast Multi-Shot
!. This will only cause aggro issues later in the phase, and you want to kill the weapons one by one, not via AoE. When Misdirection fades, recast it.
Your first target is Staff of Disintegration. Cast Bestial Wrath and destroy it quickly.
Loot the staff, equip it and use it immediately
. If you don't loot within a few minutes of its death, it will disappear. It's easy to forget, so make sure you get it immediately!
Once you've done this, proceed to to attack Netherstrand Longbow. Cosmic Infuser is your next target, kill it using Rapid Fire and try to prevent it from healing with Intimidation.
Warp Slicer is the last priority target to kill, as it stacks a painful bleed debuff on your pet. Once it's dead, finish off the other two weapons in any order, and leave the shield for last. If you don't manage to destroy Phaseshift Bulwark before the next phase begins, don't worry, it isn't very menacing.
During this phase, use Cower and Shell Shield / Harden Carapace as much as you can during Rapid Fire and Bestial Wrath. Use Mend Pet sparingly, as damage is key in this phase.
Phase 3
Kael will yell a long speech before the third phase begins, which lets you know you should plant an Explosive Trap on the circle where the three advisors' corpses lie. Cast misdirection and a few Mult-Shots as soon as the advisors respawn.
Remember to stay near your pet during this phase, or the buff from the staff you looted (which prevents disorients and stuns) will fade.
As in phase 1, you will get feared early on, which you will counter with Bestial Wrath. Nuke the $%^& out of Capernian - try to kill her before Thaladred reaches you. Your pet will take more damage now than in phase 2, so be sure to keep an eye on its health.
If you are standing near any one of the room's walls, Thaladred's knocback may cause you to fly beyond one of those walls, which will cause him to teleport you right next to him. To prevent this, Disengage in the opposite direction when you get knocked back and feel you would fly past a wall.
Thaladred is vaguely tankable, but he doesn't have a regular threat table and may change targets frequently. He is also the hardest-hitting of the advisors, so keep the heals coming. Use any remaining cooldowns to take him down.
Sanguinar's fear gets pretty annoying, and in the DPS race that is Phase 3 (though less intensive than phase 2 if executed correctly), it matters. Smoke him promptly.
When Telonicus is the last living council member and has little health left, move him, along with your pet, to the little alcove formed by the right Kael'thas statue and the nearby wall. Make sure your pet is behind the statue (this can be a hassle sometimes, be patient). Place an Immolation at the mouth of the alcove, and finish Telonicus off.
Phase 4
Kael'thas will run towards you the instant you kill the last advisor. Don't try to attack him to misdirect threat, as he will probably stop and cast spells at a range. Simply allow him to walk into your trap, and move off to the other side of the statue. He will now begin attacking your pet.
Kael'thas casts Mind Control during this phase. Your pet is immune to this spell, but you are not, which is why you must stay out of Kael's line of sight. However, Mind Control has a
30 second cooldown
, so type /sw at the start of the phase, and start it as soon as he casts it. You now know how much time you have before he is able to recast it. The emotes he issues when he casts it are
"Obey me!"
and
"Bow to my will!"
.
Kael will periodically spawn a phoenix, which will run straight to you if your pet has Mend Pet on it. Kill it and its egg as soon as you can each time it spawns. Feign Death
can cause it to despawn
- use this to your advantage.
When Kael begins to cast Pyroblast, you know you have 3 casts before which he
will not cast Mind Control
, so make sure you heal your pet up during this sequence.
Sometimes, you will be out of range of your pet, and the staff buff will fade from it. This will cause Kael to disorient it, and run towards you. Quickly
Feign Death
and let him run back to your pet.
Use Kill Command to deal damage from behind the statue, and make good use of your pet's cooldowns to mitigate Fireball damage.
Phase 5
At 50%, Kael runs to the middle of the room. The main addition in this phase is Gravity Lapse, which shuttles you into the air if you touch the ground. If you are high up and see the debuff fading,
Disengage before landing
to avoid fall damage. No more Mind Control, though!
Keep your pet away from the boss while affected by Gravity Lapse
to prevent it from suffering too many Nether Vapor (reduces health) stacks. Kill the phoenixes, and finally, Kael'thas himself.
Happy looting!

Question, Can he be downed in full pvp gear or does it have to be raid gear?

If you're a Kingdom Hearts fan, this guy is voiced by Quinton Flynn, the same guy that voices Axel in KH:II and Axel's original persona, Lea, in KH:BBS.
So whenever you get in that fire fight with Axel in KH:II, think that you're dodging Kael's fireballs.

Here are a few things I couldn't fit into my above post:
To clarify, phases 2-3 (and possibly 1) both have a timer associated with them, though it is usually phase 3 that initiates with units from phase 2 still alive (notably the robust Phaseshift Bulwark).
At the very start of phase 5,
remain hidden
behind Kael's statue to avoid a potential final Mind Control cast, and position your pet near the stairs so it is ready to tank the boss (threat from the previous phase is not lost).
When affected by Gravity Lapse, hover near to the ground, but do not touch it, and attack the boss sparingly, as he appears to return damage to you during this phase.
It is a good idea to use both Rapid Fire and Bestial Wrath at the outset of this phase, as he shouldn't tether you or summon a phoenix for at least 30 seconds. With Firelands gear, it is possible to finish the fight after just one Gravity Lapse with proper cooldown usage.

When Telonicus is the last living council member and has little health left, move him, along with your pet, to the little alcove formed by the right Kael'thas statue and the nearby wall. Make sure your pet is behind the statue (this can be a hassle sometimes, be patient).
I tried that tactic several times now, and it works.
But getting your pet there seems to be quite buggy. Sometimes, when my pet stands there, it just does nothing at all.
So, last time I did this, I was wondering, "what if I go behind the pillar and just let my pet stand on the other side, about 10y from the pillar".
That actually worked like a charm! The only part that gets a bit 'harder' is killing the phoenix, since your kiting area is alot smaller. However, since it has only 46k hp, you can burn it down fast.
Also, you can cast Kill Command trough that wall (the other way round did not work for me...)
Another advantage of standing here, is that you are immediately well positioned when phase 5 starts..
Just my 2 cents...

I pug this each week, here is what find easiest:
Take 4 item lvl 350+ players. 1 Tank, 1 healer, 2 dps. One of the dps should be Mage/sham/BM Hunt; hero is nice.
Tell the team this:
p = phase
p1 ~ easy. Save CDs.
p2 ~ easy, Kill mace first. Have a someone loot the staff, equip the staff, and use the 'use' on the staff. Only one person needs to use it, healer to do this is good, if healer is a paly just have a dps use it. If no dps can use it hope that your tank is warr/druid and have them do it. Save CDs.
p3 ~ kill the 'chick belf mage' first. I always put the raid markers on her and place skull on her as soon as she spawns. Then kill other 3, any order. Save CDs.
p4 ~ pop all cool downs, army hero recklessness etc etc. He will MC some of you, try your best to cc the MC'd players while dps'ing boss.
Thats pretty much it, each week I rarely wipe. Good luck (:

Managed to solo this on my ret paladin. I would recommend firelands gear, though I still have a few 359s and the troll heroic shoulders. Here's how I did it (using the modified dk solo strat posted earlier on, so use that for reference if you need to see areas to run on the map):
Bandages are useful because you won't always have enough mana to heal yourself fully when there's some downtime. A pvp trinket or human racial is a must for the encounter. I would also recommend flask and food buffs. I use a typical ret pve spec/glyphs, though I don't have eye for an eye which may help in this encounter. I brought along some healing and strength pots in case I needed them, but I did not end up using either. Use Resistance Aura whenever Capernian or Kael is engaged, and Ret Aura otherwise.
Phase 1
Start the encounter and run all the way back to the main entrance. Kill Thaladred and Sanguinar as close to the entrance as possible, but make sure not to get knocked out of the instance. I used Seal of Vengeance on Thaladred, then healed up from his rend while waiting for Sanguinar. I used Seal of Light on Sanguinar, and made sure I was at full health and 3 holy power when he died.
After Sanguinar dies, run all the way back to the gated door at the entrance to Kael's room. Capernian will attack you on the way there, use Divine Protection right as she's tossing conflag for the first time as you're running back to Kael's room. After the conflag use some sort of speed boost (rocket boots, swiftness pot, judgement) and run past her, continuing until you reach Kael's door. Once Capernian follows you and is inside the small hallway, trinket out of the conflag and kill her. After she's dead run to the small hallway before Void Reaver's room and quickly heal up while waiting for Telonicus. Kill Telonicus once he arrives there, preferably waiting until remote toy has 30 seconds or less left (or if you get really lucky, you resist it :P).
Phase 2
This is one of the easier phases. In the middle of the large hall between Al'ar and Void Reaver rooms, you'll want to stand near the 3 way intersection in the middle of the hall, but stay out of LoS of the section of the hall leading up to Kael. After you get in position, you have a few seconds to heal up before the weapons reach you, and remote toy should fall off during this time. Also switch to Seal of Righteousness during this time. Take out the Warp Slicer first, as it leaves a nasty rend that hurts almost as much as Thaladred's once it get stacked up. After that, kill the cosmic infuser while interrupting its heals. While killing these two I just subbed in divine storm for crusader strike so that the other weapons got reasonably damaged as well. Pick off the rest of the weapons in whatever order, ensuring that you will have 3 holy power when the last one dies. When you have one left, keep it up, heal yourself, and head over to where you killed Capernian. At this point if Kael hasn't engaged phase 3 yet (it usually happens right when I finish running to Capernian for me), you have maybe 10 seconds before he will, so just finish off the last weapon and switch to Seal of Vengeance.
Phase 3
You should be in position to attack Capernian, make sure your back is against the wall. Hit all cooldowns at this point, and trinket the first conflag. With all cooldowns used, you should be able to kill her before the second conflag and before Telonicus reaches you. Switch to Seal of Light after Capernian dies. You should be able to take a good chunk of health out of Telonicus while your cooldowns are still up, and finish him off just before Sanguinar reaches you. Kill Sanguinar, and then Thaladred, taking care to not get overwhelmed by rend damage. After thaladred is dead, go back into the area where you LoSed the weapons and heal up.
Phase 4
Kael will run over to your LoS spot slowly, and you should have plenty of time to heal up. In addition, he'll use his first disorient on his way running to you, and it will fade right as he reaches you. Hit your cooldowns (they should just be up again) and commence nuking Kael (still have seal of light up). Interrupt the fireballs when you can, and trinket the disorient when possible. He uses his first waves of Pyroblasts with his second disorient, so make sure that your trinket is available for that one. I ignored the phoenixes until they killed themselves, and then just killed the eggs. Continue until 50%, and then phase 5 starts. Heal yourself up and then run to the small hallway before Kael's gated door.
This phase can be more difficult than phase 3, as Kael's fireballs and Pyroblasts (if he manages to get any off) hit really hard. Just make sure to save your trinket for the second disorient so you can interrupt the first set of Pyroblasts before they hit you. I saved divine shield for the second set of Pyroblasts, and did not encounter a third set. Also make sure to interrupt the fireballs, as they hit for a decent 20k
Phase 5
Extremely easy phase. He will initially cast gravity lapse, all you have to do is stand away from him until he's done and the nether vapors disappear. Then hit your cooldowns and nuke him, trinketing the disorient. Make sure to interrupt fireballs. You'll likely have to go through 2 gravity lapses before Kael dies.
I did not need to use Lay on Hands during the encounter at all, but if it looks like you might need it the best time to use it is probably in phase 3, since you'll want forbearance to be gone by phase 4 in case you get stuck in a disorient with trinket down and he starts casting Pyros. Hopefully this helps other rets out, good luck getting the mount!

As a Balance Druid, I managed to solo this guy. Here are some tips if you would like to try :
For the spec, Dreamstate and Moonglow are mandatory. Furor can be good too if you are not highly-geared. Lunar shower is counter-productive.
Preparation phase:
Map of the instance
.
You will need to kill every trash that stands in the yellow line. Al'ar is not necessary although it gives a lot of money, prevent any silly wipe from a bad tabulation... If you are careful, something good to know is that killing Al'ar clears all the mobs in the first hallway, so you can trace your route stealthed.
Don't forget the two big arcane-machine guys just in front of the Void Reaver Room.
For the trash before Kael'Thas, I prefer using a bear-spec but if you kill them in Boomkin, make sure you are in Solar Eclipse and don't pull two packs at once.
When everything is cleared, engage the fight and start running to the entrance portal.
Phase one: advisors one by one
Thaladred
Kill him at the entrance (Red Star on the map) but beware of his knock-back. You can throw treants, Starfall, trinkets, ... and aim to Solar Eclipse
Sanguinar
Kill him at the entrance (Red Star on the map) but beware of his fear: don't stand too close of the walls or you can be sent trough the walls and be stuck... You should be in Solar Eclipse at his death.
Capernian
Kill her in the Void Reaver Room (Blue Star on the map). When you meet her, put your DoTs, then LifeBloom her deflagration. When you are in place, kill her and start running to the closed door of Kael'Thas
Telonicus
Kill him at the entrance of Kael'Thas Room (Yellow Star on the map). When you meet him, put your DoTs, then LifeBloom his shoots. When you are in place, wait for the end of the
Remote Toy debuff
and kill him when the countdown is below 15 seconds. While you are waiting, put three mushrooms in front of the door. Don't leave Solar Eclipse!
Phase two: legendary weapons
Position yourself at the left top of the hallway. Cast three LifeBlooms, one Rejuvenation and Thorns. Then, target the
Phaseshift Bulwark
.
When the weapons are on you, blow your mushrooms, DOT the Bulwark, activate Starfall, typhoon everything and replant three mushrooms. Detonate the second wave of mushrooms and the Bulwark should be dead. DOT the
Cosmic Infuser
and finish everything with Hurricane.
Get the
mace
and the
staff
. Heal yourself and plant three mushrooms at the feet of Telonicus.
P.S. : place your normal weapon, the mace and the staff on your shortcuts.
When Kael'thas starts its speech, gets three Lifeblooms, equip the staff and activate its
ability
.
Phase three: advisors all together
Telonicus
He needs to die ASAP. Blows everything you have and heal you a little after his death.
Capernian
She will arrive quickly but you will have a lot of time before Sanguinar so don’t panic and kill her. You can re-equip your normal weapon after her death.
Sanguinar
Not much to say, just kill him.
Thaladred
Kill him with DOTs and mushrooms. Don’t be in melee with him. When he dies, equip the mass heal yourself to get the
buff
(lifebloom works very well) until Kael’thas appears, then equip the staff and activate its
ability
.
Phase four: Kael’Thas and his pyroblast
DON’T USE YOUR TREANTS HERE ! If you get mind controlled while they are up, the encounter will reset…
For me, it was the most difficult phase of all five. Here are some tips to help you surviving :
The mace and the staff : always have the staff activated on you. When you see him casting its
Arcane Disruption
(it looks like Mage's Arcane Explosion), equip the mace and cast 3 Lifeblooms, then re-equip the staff. Use LoS to help healing.
The phoenix : don't kill them neither the eggs, you will have plenty of time to do so at the transition.
The
Pyroblast
: when he casts it, equip the mass, blow 1 Lifebloom then equip your normal weapon and heal through the whole duration of the spell. In addition, make distance with the boss: at the first Pyroblast, just go to the Al'ar room. For the followings, use the stairs and the space to be far away at the end of the Pyroblast. Don't forget to put 3 Lifeblooms with the mace and re-activate the staff before returning on the boss.
The mana : if you get oom, just run away until your innervate is up.
An important note is that the weapons disappear after 15 minutes so don't be too long because you will die very quickly when you lose them.
When Kael'Thas life is below 50%, he will run to its room. You will have between 1 and 2 minutes before the fight starts again so use this time to kill all the phoenix and the eggs.
Also, make sure you are at the
LEFT
side of the room, otherwise Kael'Thas will summon you in the middle of trashes (...)
Heals yourself with your normal weapon and wait for the teleport.
Phase five: Kael’Thas and his gravity lapse
He doesn't use mind control at this point so your treants can be used.
When his
Gravity Lapse
is in action, run away from the boss, kill any phoenix/egg. Six seconds before the end of the gravity lapse, put three Lifeblooms with the mace and activate the staff.
Just like phase 4 : don't kill Phoenix/eggs unless you are in the air. Heal yourself after the
Arcane Disruption
. If your weapons don't disappear, this phase is really easy.
After that, pray and loot :-) (got it at my third attempt ^^)

Me and my wife were finally able to down this guy after trying (and failing miserably) many times in the past. I am a feral druid (avg ilvl 384) and my wife a destro lock (avg 380). We began with a similar strategy as to that above:
Preparation: buff up, healthstones, imp. Clear a path of trash (though I cleared the entire raid of bosses/trash prior to my wife coming)
Phase 1: Warlock waits by the raid entrance. I go and initiate the encounter and run back to the entrance and wait for thaladred there. Kill thaladred and rinse/repeat with sanguinar. Then I pop stampeding roar and we run up back towards kael and meet the grand astromancer on the way. We kite her to the bottom of the ramp leading to kael's room and kill her there. Then we take the engineer to the wall of lootreaver's room. When he's dead...
Phase 2: We run back towards Kael's room and meet the weapons at the bottom of the ramp where we killed the astromancer. LoS them so they all group up. Kill the cosmic infuser first and then pop berserk and kill the rest pretty quickly. My wife takes the staff and puts the buff on us.
Phase 3: We kill the astromancer quickly just in time for the engineer to pop up by the time he's about to die, sanguinar pops up and we kill him and then go meet thaladred by the doorway that separates al'ars room from the corridor and kill him there.
Phase 4: We wait for Kael to come, my wife pops out a felhunter to help with the interrupts and stay's LoS untitl the mind-control shizzle is done and then pops out ocassionally to help dps the phoenix egg and get the barrier down to interrupt the pyro's. Basically it entails mashing buttons and screaming at my wife "comeeee onnn" until we make it. Frantically press heals and prepare for Phase 5
Phase 5: We expected to get teleported inside Kael's room, so we were quite surprised when he teleported to the corridor (not really giving us much space to avoid his clouds...) I ended up getting 7 stacks (50k health remaining). It was frantic and I expected to die but with a mix of using health potion, healthstone, mashing cooldowns and cursing at my monitor we got it down.
Sadly no Ashes, but now we have a basic understanding, we will get to it every week until we both get a mount. I hope that this will be of use to somebody so they too can work towards getting their mount :)

For those of you asking if this raid is soloable
Yes, it is soloable, however, at the moment, Kael'thas's gravity lapse ability is bugged, instead of letting you fly, it throws you up in the air makes you fall down, throws you up again, makes you fall down, during this, you will be unable to move at all, and you will take the falling damage as well, so if you are trying a solo strategy, chances are you will be standing in a place that will get you killed nearly instantly, unless you place yourself under an archway to stop yourself from being thrown up to high.

As of now Jan 20th. Gravity Lapse is bugged throwing you in the air pretty much killing you after 2 falls.
Any tips?

I successfully solo'ed Kael'thas last night as a discipline priest in what I believe is a world first for any healer spec.

Part 4:

Part 5:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8uqrQ1LogE
Character:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/kilrogg/Vaugn/advanced
(this isn't the gear I wore in the fight. I used the +spirit pvp trinket and two pieces of the Shadow 397 Dragon Soul set.)
Spec & Glyphs:
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/talent#bfRsMRsbcorZMubZM:mMkaVdzM0
I used a +300 int flask and +90 int food. After all four adds were down I canceled the flask and switched to a prismatic elixir (+90 resistance) and Elixir of the Cobra (+225 crit). I also used a Deathblood venom potion in phase 2 against the legendary weapons.
Pre-battle: Kill everything else in the instance. You'll be zooming all over the instance kiting. The last thing you need are unwanted adds. You'll need help to kill Void Reaver as he cannot be solo'ed by a priest.
Phase 1 -- Kill the first three advisers at the start of the instance. Kill Telonicus on the ramp in A'lar's room.
Phase 2 -- Fight at an intersection leading to Kael's room. Open with Holy Fire and Pain on the shield. Pop Shadowfiend, Fade, Power Infusion, and nuke down the shield. The instant it dies, siwtch to the mace and kill it.
Once the mace dies, gather all weapons together (casting Pain on them as you do so) just around sight from the hallway to Al'ar's room, pop a deathblood venom, and repeatedly cast Mind Sear. It's critical you do as much damage as possible before the advisers arrive in phase 3. (Suriving weapons also gain additional health when phase 3 starts).
Note that all weapons are immune to Devouring Plague.
Phase 3 -- Continue AoE'ing for about ten seconds after the advisors repop. Finish off the Staff of Disintegration with direct dps, grab the staff, equip it, and keep mind searing for another 1-2 casts. Then switch to Warp Slicer and direct DPS it down. You'll likely need both Pain Suppression and Desperate Prayer as the Rend debuff has stacked quite high by now.
Move back into the hallway and Pain several targets, most notably the daggers (which are low on health by now) and the axe (which is at moderate health). Smite the daggers and/or axe until the next two advisers. They'll start hurting you so place yourself in the hallway such that Thaladred's knockback will send you flying once he arrives. You'll be relying on Thaladred to keep knocking you back out of enemy melee range. (Hint: use levitate when knocked back to gain additional distance.)
Kill order for the rest of the fight is: Daggers > Axe > Sanguinus > Telonicus > Carpernian > Thaladred > Bow > Kael > Phoenixes.
Melee weapons die first because they're low on health and have high dps. Sanguinus dies next because his fear is highly annoying and his dps is high. Telonicus has the next highest dps, followed by Carpernian. Once all those are down there isn't much need for Thaladred's knockback so he can be killed. The bow primarily does AoE damage and not much of it, so just toss a pain on it whenever you happened to tab across it. It'll die in due course.
Phase 4: Kael joins in about the time the first advisor is going down. (Or second if you got lucky and Telonicus's first Remote Toy attack missed, thus allowing you to use your high spellpower weapons for an additional 15 seconds.)
Kite the advisors back and forth between Al'ar's room (spending as much time as you can running in a circle on the ledge there), blowing cooldowns anytime you start taking significant damage from the advisers, phoenixes, and Kael'thas.
Once the advisers and weapons are down, switch back to your normal weapons. Start DOT'ing Kael'thas and keep running away. His 10-second disorient only hurts if you've got a mess of phoenixes on you, so blow a cooldown (pvp trinket, Pain Suppression, or Desperate Prayer) if you get CC'ed when they're close. Kael runs fast though, so it doesn't hurt to keep running way ahead using Inner Will. He will catch up and you can DOT him then.
Once you've had your weapons re-equipped for a while you'll have plenty of mana, so feel free to refresh DOTs even when they're only halfway through their duration. And keep yourself constantly Shielded, Renewed, and Prayer of Mending-ed.
One final note: If you cast Shadowfiend in phase 4, you risk being mind controlled and the encounter resetting. Kael does not mind control his tank. So you can be mind controlled if: A) you cast shadowfiend then fade, or B) You cast shadowfiend, Kael'thas casts his disorient ability, and the shadowfiend resists the disorient while you do not.
Phase 5: Kael'thas will run back to his room at 50%. Just keep kiting the phoenixes. You could single-target down a few if you're bored, but they're even easier to kite in phase 5 (when you're flying) than in phase 4.
Otherwise, just keep him DOT'ed, stay way ahead of the phoenixes, and toss a few smites on Kael when opportunity presents itself. You'll bag him in due course.

Soloing Kael'thas as a
MAGE
:
You need at least 390ish ilevel worth of gear. Full heroic Firelands gear or normal DS gear. Legendary staff is nice but not necessary but you should have a good weapon regardless. Kings drums, fort scroll, int flask and food buff.
Spec arcane, standard 31/33 / 7/5 / 3 arcane PVE spec is fine. Take 3/3 Prismatic Cloak. 2/2 Imp Blink or 2/3 Fire Power is the only choice here. I did it with 2/3 Fire Power because I was too lazy to respec and my mage is worgen with sprint racial, but 2/2 Imp Blink is preferable. This fight may be doable as fire, but I doubt it as you won't have the raw burst that arcane has and Incanter's Absorption is ludicrously OP here.
Use Mage Armor at all times.
Phase 1: Kite Thaladred and Sanguinar to the instance entrance, kill them there. Use mana shield liberally. Kill Capernian about halfway between the entrance and the door to KT's room. If you are at absolute max range, she will probably not conflag you. Kill Telonicus towards the bottom of the ramp leading to the door to KT's room.
Phase 2: Focus down Devastation first. Drop a ring of frost as the weapons are approaching, they will all be frozen and you can kill Devastation and possibly the Phaseshift Bulwark here. Pop images and kill the rest asap. Phaseshift Bulwark's pummel ability is an
8 second
lockout so don't let it be in melee range of you without images up. Bandage, loot, equip and /use the Staff of Disintegration.
Phase 3: Blow Telonicus up, use AP/Mana Gem early here. If he is at a lower level than you are on the ramp leading to KT's room, he frequently bugs out and can't path to you properly and doesn't cast bombs at you when you're at max range from him so you take next to no damage from him. Staff of Disintegration aura will stop Remote Toy from stunning you. Continue your burn and blow Capernian up. Mage ward/mana shield as much as possible here to minimize damage. Blow Sanguinar up when he arrives, then evocate / bandage to full. When Thaladred arrives, kite him around a bit till cooldowns (images in particular) are back up, but try to kill him close to KT's room door. You shouldn't take any damage from him.
Phase 4: The difficult part (gear check). Counterspell first fireball. Blow KT up ASAP with all cooldowns + time warp. There are two ways to do this phase: Either use images and LOS around the wall of the room outside KT's door until he casts an MC, then blow time warp + cooldowns and kill him, or just blow cooldowns + images, iceblock the MC if he gets you with it and kill him. The first method is what you will do if your gear is mediocre (390ish). Either way kill him. Swap back to your normal weapon for 15 seconds after he casts Arcane Disruption if you like for more damage. Note when he casts Shock Barrier/Pyroblast he will target
you
with Pyroblast regardless of whether images are up or not, and Phoenixes will always target you. So have counterspell available for this scenario. He must be pushed to 50% before you run out of cooldowns / mana and die.
Evocate and bandage in the transition. Kill any phoenixes and eggs that are up here.
Phase 5: Currently bugged but doable. Continue using Staff of Disintegration and swapping back to your normal weapon for 15 seconds after Arcane Disruption casts. He will teleport you to him. Slowfall or blink to avoid fall damage from bugged Gravity Lapse, stand at range, blow Phoenixes or eggs up and ignore KT until shock barrier ends. CS first fireball after this, use cooldowns + images again after the next Arcane Disruption (if your images are disoriented he will target you), collect loot. Don't stand in flamestrike during this phase, if it does hit you it's 120k damage.
It's pretty tough but fun.
Note: Al'ar and all trash from the entrance to KT's room must be cleared, but I did not need to kill VR or his trash, or Astromancer and her trash. Al'ar as arcane is more or less "stand there and DPS boss until it flies off, evocate, stand there and DPS boss until it dies".

FERAL DRUID SOLO
I have him down pat as a feral druid, mount dropped my 4th week or so of soloing him.
I use an agi flask, agi food, a health potion, and my pvp trinket. Bandages will come in handy as well. My gearscore at the time was 380. Feral is my offspec.
This is my spec and glyphs:
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/talent#0ZrbMfRurzRczMcu:qM0firm
You could probably drop natural reaction/thick hide for dps talents since you'll be in cat form most of the time and the majority of KT's damage is from fire, but it's up to you.
I clear Alar and all his trash before the fight. At no point when Thaladred is up do you want be suspended in the air for too long, otherwise you'll be teleported to him. This means don't jump off the ramp in alar's room and get near a wall for capernian's arcane burst in p3. DBM timers for TK will help you a lot.
Phase 1:
Start the boss and run to the very front of the instance. This is where you will kill Thaladred and Sanguinar. Be careful not to get feared or knocked back out the entrance portal. When Sanguinar dies, run up the left ramp in Alar's room and los Capernian behind a nook in the wall. When she gets in range charge her and dot her up fast. You can trinket a conflag but her arcane burst debuff will still be annoying. Drag Telonicus to the entrance of KT's room and bring him to around 20%. Keep LB on yourself and kill him when your remote toy debuff is about to run out.
Phase 2:
Position yourself in the left corner in the corridor outside kt's room. LB yourself x3 and cast thorns. Go cat and pop barkskin, berserk, and survival instincts. Spam swipe till just the cosmic infuser and phaseshift bulwark are up. You can target the cosmic infuser for interrupts during this part. Dot up the phaseshift bulwark and loot the Staff of Disintegration and Cosmic Infuser. You will want macros ready for both of these on your bar.
/equip Staff of Disintegration
/use Staff of Disintegration
/equip Cosmic Infuser
You will also want your ordinary weapon on your bar for easy switching back and forth. Equip and use the staff in preparation for phase 3.
Phase 3:
Lb x3 and thorns yourself before telonicus comes up. Dps him down as fast as possible, and keep him near the door to KT's room. Capernian will show up when he is around 40%. Range pull her into the tiny room outside KT's room, otherwise she'll arcane burst you very far away. Don't worry much about your health while you fight her, just get her down fast. Sanguinar will likely show up when she is almost dead. You can swap to your normal weapon now because you don't need the staff buff anymore. Heal yourself up while you're fighting sanguinar using instant heals. You have awhile before Thaladred shows up, but don't dawdle because you don't want phase 4 starting with thaladred at full health. I use barkskin and tiger's fury for thaladred, burning him down and running away with a fresh rip on him when I have 4 stacks of his rend. Heal yourself up while you run down the ramp in Alar's room.
Phase 4:
I fight the entirety of this phase near the bottom of the ramp in alar's room. The key to this phase is keeping up the 50% less fire damage buff from the Cosmic Infuser while you have the staff equipped. Fireball interrupts help, but make sure to save your skull bash cd for pyroblasts. Once you get used to killing the advisors in time this is definitely the hardest phase.
Equip the cosmic infuser, LBx3 and thorns when you see KT enter alar's room, then equip and use the staff. Charge KT and go to town on him. He will barrier and start pyroblasting relatively soon. I usually barkskin his first pyro and interrupt the second. I don't bother dpsing down phoenix eggs as I like to stay on kt for interrupts, but this is up to you. You may have 3 phoenixes beating on you by the time phase 5 triggers. I save my pvp trinket if I accidentally take an arcane disruption while healing with cosmic infuser, because the 10 second disorient usually means a wipe. Every 30 seconds you need to heal with the cosmic infuser equipped, otherwise his fire damage starts to hurt a lot more. Eating a pyroblast without the cosmic infuser buff up may mean a wipe. You only have to last till 50%, so if you're in a tight spot use a health pot or go bear and frenzied regen/survival instincts.
Phase 5:
If you successfully make it to phase 5 then congrats, you will probably kill him. When KT hits 50% he will run all the way back to his room. You want to get him as low as possible during his run back. Equip your main weapon for this part of the fight. Dash and stampeding roar in order to keep up with him. Berserk and do a normal raid rotation on him (yay shred). You won't be able to keep up with him when he's almost to his room, so try and leave a fresh rip. Heal up outside his room while you wait on him. If any phoenixes catch up to you go ahead and kill them. If you want to play it safe (and depending on how low you got him while he was running back) you can do the same cosmic infuser/staff rotation for this phase. Otherwise just use your main weapon and trinket arcane disruption while you burn him down. You don't have to interrupt pyroblast during this phase so interrupt fireballs on cd. When he casts gravity lapse move to the corridor outside the tiny room so you arent hit with the max health decrease debuff. When gravity lapse ends go back in, zerk and kill him. I usually only have 1 gravity lapse go off.
That's it folks! I spent about 5 hours wiping to this fight before I consistently got to phase 4, so patience and practice is key. Lots of people have timing issues on the first 3 phases. Just stay cat form and dps hard, I never use bear form until phase 4. I'm planning on frapsing a kill eventually, so I'll post the link here. *youtube.com/watch?v=c5QTVj16Kf0 is a feral druid solo vid I watched when learning the fight, but I stagger the advisors in phase 3 a lot more and kill the weapons in a different spot. The worst part about learning the fight is kt's trash respawning >.> Good luck!

Nowadays it seems very difficult to solo without DS gear. Possibly the instance has been fine tuned--especially ressing the advisers sooner.

Since 4.3.2 it seems he always gets a spiteful mind-control off in the final phase, while he is landing, so me and my girlfriend decided it would be best to get my pet unstuck from the statue, walk him to Kael, then have us hide back behind the statue until he lands and starts attacking.
We downed him with zero problems this way, and he dropped Ashes for me, just in time for Valentine's. :)

Is this guy soloable by a survival hunter? I'm at 384 ilvl atm, and I kinda really want the mount.
Is there a better spec to solo this guy as a hunter?

How to solo as a Ret pala:
PREPARATION:
1) Glyph Divine Protection.
2) Talent Selfless Healer for shorter WoG CD (not necessary; use if needed).
3) 20k+ DPS (not including burst).
4) Flask of Titanic Strength and Golemblood potions for more DPS.
5) Ideally you should have your Ret T13 4-set bonus but to be honest this can be done without any cooldowns above a certain gear level and with a little luck.
Note that Humans will have an advantage here thanks to their racial but it's not essential.
GUIDE:
1) Clear trash between the start of the instance and the boss room (only one corridor between Al'ar's room and the boss is needed, whichever one you'll be using). Feel free to kill Al'ar as well for some gold :)
PHASE 1:
2) When you approach the boss and the roleplaying begins, immediately run back out of the room and all the way to the start of the instance. Wait patiently. After a few minutes...
3) Thaladred the Darkener will appear, walking casually down the hall. Stay near a wall and then burn him quickly when he gets into range. You can even kite him low so his dots don't get to stack. Pretty easy either way. His silence can get annoying but he won't last long.
4) Once he's dead, run to the entrance of Al'ar's room and wait for Lord Sanguinar to come running down the platform. He hits for trivial damage and does a fear (which you can LoS if you're quick). Dispatch at your leisure. He should die at the entrance of that room, near the ramp.
5) Next up, Grand Astromancer Capernian. Run back to the entrance of the instance and wait for her. The goal is to have her die close to where you killed the 1st boss, Thaladred. Stay out of LoS until she runs into one of the tighter corridor spaces, then quickly run out, put your back against the wall and open up on her hard. Feel free to use your wings+zeal (save guardian) and they'll be back when you need them again. If she Conflagrates you (10 sec cc; incredibly annoying), don't bubble out of it. Just wait it out or use your racial if you're Human.
6) Once she's dead head into Al'ar's room and wait at the top of the ramp that is on the opposite side of the corridor without trash. When Master Engineer Telonicus appears, run around the opposite way that he heads in order to get into the clear corridor with him chasing you. So if he heads down the ramp, you run around up the top, and vice versa. Your goal is to head back to the entrance to Kael'thas' room. When you get there, Telonicus should arrive a few seconds later and start throwing bombs. If he hasn't already done so, he'll place the Remote Toy debuff on you, which will occasionally stun you for 4 seconds. This debuff lasts 1 minute. This will be gone soon enough. Depending on how quickly you kill him, it may already be gone before the start of the next phase. Make sure to kill him before it is refreshed in any case. Divine Protection glyphed will cut the damage from his bombs significantly.
PHASE 2:
7) Stay behind a wall and LoS the weapons out into the open corridor. Change seals to Righteousness and begin AoEing. Loot the Cosmic Infuser (gives a helpful buff) and the Phaseshift Bulwark (absorbs 100k damage for 4 secs and some cc immunity -- incase something goes wrong). Kill the weapons and then heal up. Wait next to Telonicus' body until the next phase begins. Ideally you should have 3 Holy Power saved up, with Inquisition active (fish for procs on the weapons before you kill the last of them).
PHASE 3:
8) When Telonicus engages again, open up on him hard but don't use cooldowns. You shouldn't need to. He will put Remote Toy on you again. Simply endure it and kill him. When he's dead, Sanguinar will soon come running up. Dispatch him too. If Remote Toy is becoming a problem, use CDs and bubble it off when Capernian gets in range. That way you can deal some damage to her as well without taking any for a bit. Either way, finish Capernian off as fast as you can, using wings+zeal if need be. Last is Thaladred. Simple nuke. Feel free to kite him to prevent taking any damage from his Rend (which still hurts a lot if you let it stack). When they're all dead, make your way back to the entrance of Al'ar's room, at the bottom of the ramp.
PHASE 4:
9) Kael'thas will come running into Al'ar's room. Engage him as soon as he's in the open. He will put up a Shock Barrier soon after reaching Al'ar's room and then spam Pyroblast, which hits for a ton. Use your CDs and hit him hard, making sure to interrupt Pyroblast once his barrier falls. When he hits 50% he'll run back to his room. Chase him and keep DPSing (use a Swiftness potion to keep up for more damage if you want). The lower you can get him before he gets inside his room, the quicker the last phase will be, and the less risky it will be. You can also interrupt his basic Fireball casts as well when his Shock Barrier is on CD. Switching the Cosmic Infuser in and using a heal will cut his damage by 50% for 30 seconds, too. Note that you should also kill the Phoenix and the Phoenix Eggs that spawn or you may find yourself becoming overwhelmed if your DPS isn't up to par. Oh, one more thing, he might do an Arcane Explosion-type attack that will disorient you for about 10 seconds. Just wait it out unless he also puts up Shock Barrier during this time, in which case, trinket/bubble out of it and burn the barrier down ASAP then interrupt Pyroblast.
PHASE 5:
10) After the roleplay, let Kael'thas run back to Al'ar's room for more space. When he does Gravity Lapse, float down and open up hard on him. Avoid the purple beams as they debuff you with -10% Max Health and this lasts for 1 minute. Bubble it off if you get too many (6+). Kill him fast. Job done! His damage output in this phase is very low and only becomes a problem if you let yourself float into the beams too often, thereby reducing your max health to the point where he can kill you in a few hits.
Hope you find this helpful. Good luck on getting Ashes!

Done this one many times 3-man (fury\arms warrior + holy paladin + fire mage) and 2-man (fury warrior + holy paladin); in these cases we usually kill all stuff in kael'thas room, quite easy, then when 3-manning the mage takes the staff when all adds are revived, to avoid all the cc's they do, while 2-manning I (the warrior) use the staff.
After having killed the adds, in both cases I kite kael'thas behind the statue and the healer only uses 1-2 sec, then goes on the other side of the statue to get out of line of sight, else kael'thas mind-controls and it's mostly a wipe.
At around 1,2 millions, kael'thas goes into phase 5 and this is a much easier phase, I just dps him till he does nether beam, then I start flying back and forth (standing still my health gets reduced till 10%, at a point when his fireball one-shots an 85 player) to avoid stacks.
After he stops casting, it's nuke time again, while 2-manning or 3-manning the only very important time in which someone has to use the staff is the phase in which there are all adds; rest can be done with normal weapons.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now the overpowered experience: blood dk in dps gear, item level 381 (391 as warrior and still haven't managed to solo it).
I did an attempt, as blood dks are OP let's fight all in kael'thas room, of course wiped due to all ccs of the adds together.
I saw some videos and read some comments in the past of kiting the adds around, of course, as when they die it's there that they'll be when they get resurrected.
I didn't follow the instructions of anyone, I chose my own spots.
Kited the first one almost inside void reaver's room, the second one on al'ar's platform, the third one (the annoying mage) almost inside astromancer's room, the forth one (the annoying engineer of the remote toy) at the right entrance of kael'thas room.
So of course killed them easily, as well as the weapons, and when he resurrected the adds I was near the engineer, which turned out to be useful, as he's probably the most annoying one; nuked with 80k death strikes, etc., the mage came right when he died, and gave me some problems knocking me back and slowing me, always used AMS to reduce these problems.
Then the other 2 came together, but don't really represent a problem and killed quite easily.
Kael'thas time, on this phase he kept doing arcane disruptions on me (but as a dk who needs to avoid them?), the damage is almost all magical, AMS each time I could and ofc interrupt fireballs and pyroblasts with mind freeze and strangulate.
Killed the phoenixes, but damage is ridicolous, can as well heart strike kael'thas and give a death strike to the egg in case.
Phase 5, of course I kited him on nether beam and dps'd the rest of the time, got hit all the times by arcane disruption, disoriented for 10 seconds, and in the end I kited him to al'ar's room.
Only surprise here, and I would like to know if anyone knows of this thing, if possible, at around 150k kael'thas hp, I got a hit called "flame strike", for more or less 100k, ended up with 10k hp
; then ofc I healed back to full using cds, but that was really a surprise and I'd have died if I haven't had over 100k at the time.
Not sure if it has to do with the long time, downed him in 16 mins.
Second try, first really serious try, as trying him inside the room isn't exactly a clever thing, lol.

I found out that Phase 1 & weapons phase were so easy, phase 4 was a bit tricky but he never got me under 50% health, last phase was pretty easy also though I had 3 stacks of debuff that reduces your health
Thanks for the infos guys I read here, they helped me a lot :) specially the ret paladin that soloed it

Close kill as blood dk in full dps gear (399lev).
started by taking the first mob to the Solarium, on the back wall. Next guy to the entrance, then the annoying mage I took to the western entrance to Kael's room. Mechanic-guy I took to the Crucible, as far to the back as I could.
This way I was able to take care of the 2 worst ones first. Then at the end of the phase I had a little time to wait until Kael showed up. Pretty standard, interrupt when pyroblasting & such..
One mistake I made on the last phase, didnt move out of the beams... :P such a good try.
Trying again in a second...
Edit;
As of 15/04/2012, Gravity Lapse still bugging, tossed me to my death after easy and funny run, ruining my solonight...
Edit:
Two last weeks everything went well, but tonight Gravity lapse thingie bugging again ( 6th of May). First blast to the air it worked, but accidentally I got to the ground and got Lapsed again, this time Jumping didnt keep me in the air unfortunately. Wiped on 20k hp left on Kael >.<..

How is it possible to completely avoid the Gravity Lift after the very first lift? Or is it simply random how many times it will lift you?

Once you acquire around ilvl 390 gear as a Blood DK, you can abandon some of the more complicated strategies to make this a much quicker farm.
When you have Hour of Twilight 5-man gear (~ ilvl 378), you will need to move the advisers around the dungeon to avoid fighting all of them simultaneously, as detailed in many other comments. However, when you've got some DS gear (mostly Raid Finder level Gurthalak or better as your 2H), you can just fight him straight up in the boss room. The only reason you couldn't do this before was when gear was lower and your weapon wasn't as good, you couldn't take all four advisors on at once without dying because you'd be fighting them way too long, mostly due to Capernian's irritating abilities that move you out of melee range and put a long disorient on you. However, with a strong enough weapon and popping some DPS CDs, you can now get Capernian down fast enough that you aren't fighting her without AMS's protection for very long.
When you do it this way, fight the advisors normally, but put Thaldred and Sanguinar in the corners of Kael's room so you can avoid a little bit of the damage when you get to Phase 3, and just down Capernian and Telonicus near Kael himself. Kill the weapons pronto, and wait for Kael to start talking about making you fight all four at once. I usually will try to pop Army, regular ghoul and such right around here. The key to doing it this way is making sure to pop AMS so it has as much effective uptime as possible, but before Capernian can cause you to lose control of your character through the disorient. You want to just rip Capernian down as fast as possible since her disorients and knockbacks are basically the only reason you couldn't do this fight this way before this gear level.
Kael is fought basically the same way as in every other strategy, although if you fight him in the room, he won't really get to Pyroblast before you get him to 50% since he doesn't have travel time from his room to wherever you were fighting him (usually Al'ar's room or the hallway outside).

Strategy for one/two players from the
Solo/Duo Old Raid Compendium
, done at level 85 at patch 4.3 with ilvl 385-395 gear:
Kael'thas Sunstrider
Very few classes can solo this fight outright, but most can two-man it.
Phase 1
: He will spawn each member of his council one at a time, and it is fairly easy to burn each down one by one. At this point you should kite each member of the group except magelady Capernian to the other side of the room and kill them so you can easily burn her without interference from the others at the start of Phase 3.
Phase 2
, he will spawn 7
legendary weapons
which you must defeat, after which you can loot them. One person will need to loot the
Staff of Disintegration
, and the other will need to loot the
Infinity Blade
. If the dagger cannot be used, one of the party will be MCed and die (or kill the other party member). If the staff cannot be used, there will be more CC to deal with in phase 3. If this phase is problematic, the weapons should be tanked over by the bow, and a pet or dpser should take care of the staff first. I
Before
Phase 3
begins, the staff should be used to mitigate the overwhelming CC in Phase 3, when all the council members spawn and attack at once. In this phase,
Grand Astomancer Capernian
should be killed first as she will do a vicious
Arcane Blast
which knock backs and slows and a
Conflagrate
, then
Thaladred the Darkener
, as he does a large
knock back
.
Phase 4
: Kael'thas will attack. He will periodically
Mind Control
the lower threat of the two party members, which must be dispelled by attacking the MCed player with the Infinity Blade, which will dispel it. He will also cast a
Pyroblast
which does a decent amount of damage and is cast in succession but can and should be interrupted. However, if he has his
Shock Barrier
up he will be immune to interrupts, so be sure to break it before interrupting. He will also spawn Phoenixes in this phase, but they can be ignored.
At 50%,
Phase 5
will start and he will go up in the air and periodically cast
Gravity Lapse
. You will want to stay out of melee range of him during this time, as he will cast a stacking debuff on you that reduces your max HP considerably. Wait until he is done casting it and there are no more purple lightning bolts around him, then attack him. Reports are that some classes can solo Kael'thas, but it highly advised to master the mechanics in a group of two first.

One question I got about this. I already got myself the Ashes and I'm curious about letting a guildie in a run. Does the mind-control stuff happen if the guildie just sits on the entrance, never touching Kael?

Now with MoP live, what I posted here is likely all a little bit redundant. Though Kael'thas was buffed himself, I think many classes can now simply avoid all but Kael'thas his room and do the fight there. Especially with the majority of selfheals and survivability this fight should not be a major problem for +463ilvl rogues anymore. I have not done this myself, but seeing the majority of my strategy obsolete I decided to edit it and remove that, the video that was on is also deleted. Thanks for the support of this post for those few months. If I have some notes on the 5.0 Kael'thas fight I'll post it here.

Here's some fun information that I just thought I would share(because there's already enough Information on how to kill him and the likes), Kael'thas shares the same voice actor with Axel of Kingdom Hearts(Or Reno from Final Fantasy: Advent Children).
I met him at an Anime Convention and told him that I killed him in World of Warcraft, and he replied with, Quote:(Doing Kael'thas' voice)
"I know..., I felt it!"
.....best day ever... :)

In Mists of Pandaria, a blood DK can no longer solo Kael'thas because you cannot spec out of Bloodworm, meaning you'll get mind controlled and reset the fight.
Although many other classes will easily solo this.

After trying for three days straight with my friend, we finally got Kael'thas duo'd tonight.
We went through a few class combinations - paladin/shaman, mage/shaman, hunter/hunter - and on our successful attempt used hunter/shaman. I went BM with a turtle pet, and the shaman was elemental spec.
We repeatedly had difficulty killing the council in the room, and had much better attempts using the halls between the room and the entrance.
We fought Thaladred in Al'ar's room by the top of the ramp, Sanguinar in the hall just outside Al'ar's room going toward Kael'thas, Capernian at the entrance, and Telonicus at the door to Kael'thas.
We burned them down individually easy enough. For the weapons, we focused on the shield first, then the healing mace, then killed the rest one by one. Both of us looted the Staff of Disintegration and used the effect, and I also picked up the Infinity Blade in case CC needed to be removed.
I created two macros specifically for swapping between the staff and blade in case my partner got MC'd, which he did on a few of the attempts, so they were helpful to have if you have a more aggressive/reckless friend.
#showtooltip
#show Cobra Shot
/equip Staff of Disintegration
/use Staff of Disintegration
/cast Cobra Shot
#showtooltip
#show Raptor Strike
/equip Infinity Blade
/cast Raptor Strike
Because the Raptor Strike was modified to equip the dagger, it reduced the effort of putting on the dagger and spamming the melee ability required to break CC to one button, and then once they were free I was immediately able to switch back to and use the staff and attack with the modified Cobra Shot to minimize me getting disoriented, again with a single button.
We were able to kill the council one or two at a time without much issue as they reached us. Once Kael'thas went active, we went back to the doorway between Al'ar's room and the hallway toward Kael'thas's room. Originally we tried in the small room and hallway just outside his door, and at the intersection just down the hall, but they didn't work very well. Because there were two of us, when the tanking turtle got disoriented, Kael'thas would run out toward us and would sometimes stand in the doorway, giving us no place to hide from the MC, and of course only I could drop my aggro with Feign while the shaman could only run around. Being at the door outside of Al'ar's room gave us two doors to run through - in case he ran into Al'ar's room or all the way back into the hallway side, we could both just run through to the other side and hide again.
The turtle needed an occasional heal from me, but otherwise we hid a lot, waited, and came out just after the MC messages of 'Obey me!' and 'Bow to my will!'. I tried to use the in-game stopwatch to measure 30 seconds, but usually was scrambling to much to start or reset it, so just went with a rough estimate and hid early.
We also killed Al'ar at some point, because in one attempt, as Kael'thas ran back to his room at 50%, we got Al'ar's aggro. I'm not sure if we accidentally hit him or what.
Once Kael'thas had run off, we waited until he teleported and summoned us in the doorway outside his room. I temporarily put my pet on passive and made sure we had a good view of Kael'thas and the pet in the open hallway before attacking. The shaman did end up healing a few times, and I also had to res my pet at least twice (I wasn't watching the stacking debuff on it), but we finally killed him.
He was enough nice enough to drop the Ashes on our first kill for all our troubles :) It took a lot of learning of where to go and what to use (and over the course of the three days I was running dungeons to gear up my hunter), but it was well worth the effort. Good luck to all on getting this mount!

This guys is probably one of the toughest raid encounters in the game, and is at the pinnacle of Tier 5. Ive seen his abilites and tactics and it looks like a wild fight. He looks harder than many of the bosses in BT and Mt. Hyjal. I'd say only Archimonde, Reliquary of Souls, and Illidan are tougher than him.
