The updated version makes it ever more confusing:

Fodder to the Flame (Necrolord)
Instant / 3 min cooldown
Requires Demon Hunter
Commission a duel to the death against a Condemned Demon from the Theater of Pain. Defeating the demon and consuming its Empowered Soul Fragment causes you to enter Demon Form for X sec. (Currently 15 for Havoc and 10 for Vengeance)

In theory, a 3 min CD that requires you to actually kill a mob to grant you Meta for for few seconds seems really, really underwhelming. It also states "duel", so it suggests you need to kill him yourself without your party or raid's help? Description suggests it's supposed to be powerful, therefore I assume it will not be oneshotted. So, we have to summon an add during boss fight, kill it, wasting boss DPS uptime to get a few seconds on meta?

I think we either really lack context on this (i.e., seeing how it actually works), or there's something absolutely wrong with this ability...

Seems relatively underwhelming. Might be useful if it actually procs Shattered Souls since its a demon.

Demon has about 40% of your max hp, glaive damages ~60% of its health (always dies to two), and the demon's attack doesn't seem to change much if at all regardless of equipped item level.

Soul lasts 30 seconds on the ground before disappearing.

Demon corpse remains for 2 minutes (for fleshcraft use).

When summoned, the demon attacks for 25 seconds before going away. It does have a leash range and will return to where it was summoned.

For pvp purposes, you are considered in combat while the demon is chasing you (potential to avoid getting sapped by rogues). The demon may continue to attack while you are polymorphed to break it (testing required).

The demon summoned by this ability is a random one of the following:
-Felguard
-Wrathguard
-Doomguard
-Infernal
-Felhound
-Shivarra
-Ur'zul

However, these demons can NOT be macro targeted. Even typing in /target Infernal in chat will not work. So, macroing this ability together with Throw Glaive is out of the picture.

It doesn't actually say this in the description but killing your summoned demon still spawns an Demon Soul that you suck up for a 20% damage increase buff. (No more damage reduction tho.)

As of 9.0.5 other players and enemies can target your demon and kill it so unless you can target and get to it first with your throw glaive you don't get that sweet aoe damage. Because of this, kiting the demon to where you want it to be for the aoe doesn't really seem to work reliably in situations other than world questing. I even made a weakaura to tell me when my demon is out so I can try to get to it first but it's so squishy and dies so fast.

I'm only just now leveling my first character in shadowlands after 9.0.5 hit.
I'm about half-way through Maldraxxus now and so far I got ZERO proccs of this ability. Looking great so far.

Edit: finished Maldraxxus and spent some time at the dummy before finally deciding on a convenant (spoiler: didn't pick Maldraxxus...) and still got no proccs at all. Something must have been wrong.

At release, this was by far the weakest of the DH's Covenant abilities, giving only a 5 second buff as a reward for killing a demon that had waaay too much health, making the other abilities far more practical. Not to mention, if an enemy drops you to critical health, this ability actually has a chance to kill you if you didn't kill the demon fast enough, giving it the dubious honor of Worst Covenant Ability of All since it actually works to kill YOU more than your enemy.

Patch 9.0.5 redesigned it so that the demon INSTANTLY dies to one use of Throw Glaive and the buff lasts 20 seconds instead of 5. The demon also explodes, healing you for 30% of your HP and dealing AOE damage to enemies around you.

It's still generally considered weaker than the other Covenant abilities, since you have to waste time casting both the ability and Throw Glaive when the others are only 1 button press and the demon can still hurt you, but it's not "hang your head in shame" awful anymore.

the reworked ability makes Details/Warcraflogs less useful now. In single target "Throw Glave" is 3rd with 10% of the total damage while "Fodder to the Flame" is at the bottom with 3%.
Throw Glaive - 10.24% - 202.5k (only 3% of this damage was actually to the boss)
Fodder to the Flame - 2.99% - 59.1k

I wasn't sure about this at first. But just a bit ago I decided I really like it. I had a player come up to steal my quest items while I was battling mobs, the Wrathguard appeared and ran toward us, and the dude split

theres a macro for this, it involves using the actual target Id's with /targetenemy macro and it works around warlock pets and non-condemned demon entities as they are all differant (indivudals)

/targetenemy 169421
/targetenemy 169425
/targetenemy 168932
/targetenemy 169426
/targetenemy 169429
/targetenemy 169428
/targetenemy 169430
/cast throw glaive
/targetlasttarget

the macro reads through all 7 possible demons and then it uses ur ability
then targets ur last target, hope this helps people. you can also change "/cast throw glaive", to "/setfocus"
itll set any demon thats spawned as ur focus and then you can make a seperate "/cast Throw glaive" for if you want to save ur demon for later use, just be mindful of the 25 second duration that they exists

Morbid curiosity.... Does anyone even like this "Ability"?
Maxed out 3 of 4 covenants... left Necro for last... can't say that there is any appeal for me as a Veng DH.
I can see the shield being useful for M+ and raids.... cept I don't care for M+ or raids other than farming old content for mounts I still won't see for another 10 years (Curse you Arthas!)
Prior to flying, I'm sure the constructs had some utility for move speeds, but far as I can tell, nothing bonus that I havn't already earned through Night Fay.
Anyways, blah blah, rant rant. Some might giggle about Ardenweld, and thats cool, just as I'm scratching my head about the Necrolords... to each their own :)

Having the ICD reset if the demon spawns at the end of a fight when there's nothing else to kill would go a long way towards easing people's frustration with this. That, and/or replacing the DPS buff with a movement speed buff in those circumstances.

After looking up and doing some testing, I was able to come up with a macro I feel comfortable using. Or two, actually. I'll describe them below.

First it's a macro to get the target of one of the possible NPCs that may spawn, and focus it:

/cleartarget
/targetexact Felguard
/targetexact Felhound
/targetexact Doomguard
/targetexact Infernal
/targetexact Shivarra
/targetexact Wrathguard
/targetexact Ur'zul
/focus

Then a macro to replace Throw Glaive in the actionbar, to hit the focus target or act normally if there's ain't one.

The way I use it is to drag the target macro to a slot with a quick keybind, such as Shift+Mouse button 5. Then use it the moment I see the green link effect, indicating Fodder to the Flame has spawned an NPC. After positioning it, I can use Throw Glaive macro to blow it and heal, not having to worry about clicking on the right enemy.

Hate. That is all. I have nothing useful to add to this conversation. I just simply despise this ability, like, utterly and completely. I literally regret going necro with my DH because of this stupid ability.

Be aware that as of Dragonflight pre-patch, the Havoc branch has a talent by the same name (Fodder to the Flame). If you have used the Havoc talent build from Icy Veins, it will be enabled there.

Cleaned up macro, working fine as of 18 Nov 2022. Let's you use Throw Glaive regularly, but will target and cast when one of the condemned demons are up.

It seems to me that lot of ppl looks at this ability as on AoE damage spell. The thing is, demons spawns Demon Soul Fragments on death - 15s lasting 20% dmg buff. That's the major added value. Yeah, it spawns on the end of the encounter too often, but 15s is still enough to pull another pack and still use at least a few seconds of that buff.

When I use Throw Glaive, more often than not the demon does not die, and I have to use it again to kill it. Anyone else have this problem?
