Even though the quest name is 'Drain You', you don't actually channel the item that shows in the quest log. Kill mobs in the area, click the icon. The Voidwalker is summoned and blue and white energy flows into the Voidwalker.

After my first couple of tries the crystal stopped working (I had 10% progress).

I persisted, and eventually it just started working again and I got a big jump in progress off just a couple of mobs, so I'm going to assume it was a UI issue and the progress was still being progressed in the background.

There are a lot of quests to pick up in this area but the Void Splinter can only be used on the mobs within the blue map area that for "Drain You". They don't work on the mobs closer to The Howling Ridge, and you will get frustrated with being spammed with "You cannot use this item". Stick to the quest area, use the splinter when the mobs are dead and you'll be fine. Happy hunting!

Skinners - Skin the creatures AFTER you use the item otherwise they just vanish :)
