Spotted in 'The Cascades' area south of the 'Valdrakken, Thaldraszus' flight point. It appears to have some kind of bait requirement to trigger the Rare.

I have tried fishing for some time for the 'right bait' as described by the NPC 'Patient Vaargo'

No luck as yet.....

--- Firstly, you will want to make sure The Great Shellkhan is spawned and ready, as well as making sure the tuskarr lady Patient Vaargo is there and fishing, if she is hiding behind the tree or gone, you will NOT be able to talk to her and your Case of Fresh Gleamfish will spoil, however there is good news! You can head back and grab another crate, any time you want at the same location! His respawn time on the beta currently is a little rough, so hopefully we can see it a bit faster on launch :)

--- Here is the exact location of the Case of Fresh Gleamfish you're going to need! : 45.63,54.80 within the Azure Span
IMPORTANT - The crate of fish expires fairly quick, you may want to get a nearby flight path in Valdrakken (the major city in thaldrazsus) prior to heading there if needed just to be safe, especially if you would like to call some people/friends to come help out with it!

--- He can be a little difficult, he does a shell spin move that deals a good bit of damage so make sure you're prepared or have some people to help, do not get him near the waterfall as he will hit you and knock you right off the ledge!

--- Once defeated, Shellkhan has a chance to drop The Super Shellkhan Gang, though it is not 100% (my daughter and I killed him, but only she got the toy on that first time killing him).
like the other rares in Dragonflight, he may also have a chance to drop dragon customization glyphs!

The Great Shellkhan is located in the Thaldraszus near Valdrakken waterfall
To unlock it you have to give Case of Fresh Gleamfish to Patient Vaargo near Shellkhan
Case of Fresh Gleamfish is located in Azure Span river island near Azure Archives
Drops The Super Shellkhan Gang toy

Use Bronze Timelock on drake to fast travel back to rare.
Looting the Crate will not dismount you.

Rare is a part of Adventurer of Thaldraszus achievement.

The Great Shellkhan rare mob can be found in Thaldraszus.

Location: 38.54 68.48
Required for: Adventurer of Thaldraszus
Reward: The Super Shellkhan Gang

This is a tricky one rare mob to trigger. First, you will need to collect Case of Fresh Gleamfish in The Azure Span at 45.62 54.84.
Travel then to Thaldraszus to the provided coordinates and talk to Patient Vaargo. Use available dialogue line so he will trigger the rare.

P.S. Case of Fresh Gleamfish expires in 15 minutes, so it's good to check out the rare is on its spot before go.

I saw the rare, looked up comments here for how to activate him, went to get the Gleamfish, came back, and the rare and Patient Vaargo are both gone. I see no corpse so maybe he despawns after some time? Or I was unlucky with someone killing it right after I left, idk. Sucks that I came back with 12+ minutes left on the Gleamfish and it's going to waste. He didn't respawn within the time I was standing here with the fish.

I got the case of fish but Patient Vaargo wont accept it. He just stands there quivering. The crate isn't expired, but no interactions when clicking on him or the create. Bugged?

Still buggy. I got the crate and turned it in with the dialogue option and the NPC responded with flavor text but the mob never became attacklable.

Currently bugged. The NPC you need to interact with to give the fish to is not intractable. Therefore you will not be able to kill this rare.

Edit: The bug has now been fixed (at least it worked for me). You should now be able to kill this rare.

The Great Shellkhan is in Thaldraszus, south of Valdrakken at a waterfall.
Patient Vaargo must be fishing nearby and The Great Shellkhan must already be there, but it cannot be fought yet.
This requires an Case of Fresh Gleamfish, which is located in The Azure Span, in the Kauriq Gleamlet area, on a small island.
Grab the Case of Fresh Gleamfish and if you deliver it to Patient Vaargo within 3 minutes, you will get the achievement Three Minutes or It's Free.
The Great Shellkhan also drops the toy The Super Shellkhan Gang.
The Great Shellkhan is part of the achievement Adventurer of Thaldraszus.

Confirming still bugged. Even using the in-game Interact Key doesn't work, but Patient Vaargo still gives random quotes.

1) Item Case of Fresh Gleamfish IS less than 3 mins and not expired
2) The Great Shellkhan IS up waiting to be activated
3) Patient Vaargo IS fishing and not quaking in his sealskin boots
4) Quest IS up
5) multiple others trying the same achieve landing around me and moving all over trying to figure out how to turn in it
6) Have tried this broken quest every two (2) days since release. Now admit its not a bug, but a feature...

Will confirm that when he's shaking in fear, /poke, /soothe and /calm don't help at all, no matter how many times you and your guildie spam it for the 15 minute lifespan of the case of fish.
We only poked like 500 times, though, so 501 pokes might be the secret. ;P

Extra Achievement possible!
Since this rare requires an item to be summend, which can spoil, you need to bring it back quickly (within 15minutes).
But, if you bring it back extra quick (within 3 minutes), there is an achievement: Three Minutes or It's Free
Thus, it is recommended to use your Bronze Timelock near the NPC, then fly down to grab the bait, and use the skill to teleport back immediately ;)

Dropped a 379 Basilisk Hide Jerkin and the toy.

when fighting him keep your back to the waterfall as his knock back can drop you over the edge and he follows, bugs out and goes into evade for 5 mins.

This worked for me. I found the crate and flew straight to the location everyone has noted in previous comments but the great shellkhan was not there and neither was the npc. I thought I blew it. As my time on the crate got to 1 mins I was positive I blew it. But then the npc appeared at 38.32, 68.51 near the cooking fire and one of the lure posts. I was able to chat to him and he started hanging the fish for the great shellkhan. When he was done, he went behind the tree and proceeded to shake in his boots as others have described. I killed the turtle, and got a The Super Shellkhan gang pet and a Seasoned Hunter's Trophy trinket.

Note that the presence of the fish does not guarantee the presence of the rare. It's very possible to waste the fish entirely if you cannot confirm that Shellkhan is up and waiting.

Rare up on Argent Dawn EU, bought over the Gleamfish, got the under 3 mins achievement and handed in. Got the dialogue. Rare proceeded to stay hidden in shell, unattackable. Unsure if this is still experiencing issues. Or this is something new, but he is currently unattackable. :C

still bugged for me - Patient Vaargo is fishing, rare is spawned, i have the crate of fish - but i can't interact with Vaargo at all. frustrating as this has been bugged since launch for me

Very easy to do just set a hearthstone in nearest inn. Go pick the crate and make sure your heartstone is not on CD. Pick the crate and return to inn. Fly 30 seconds and done. make sure you locate and best mark the spot on the map using a pin before you go pick the crate. You can get lost trying to find it in the lower levels, lakes etc .. under the city. I did this under 1 minute after picking the crate.

Tried this today, 19.01.2023 on EU server and it worked. See below 1st attempt and how it can fail, and then the 2nd attempt I tried where it can be successful.

1. Last time I tried it I made sure that both the rare and NPC were there but when I brought the Case of Fresh Gleamfish I noticed that even if the NPC and rare are there, the NPC also needs to have a dialogue box to speak with asking for the right bait, therefore it didn't work as it was non-interactable for me.

2. However, today, I made sure again that both the rare and NPC are there but also that the NPC is interactable and has a dialogue box where you can ask for the right bait.
Fortunately for me it was all good, so I used 'Bronze Timelock' dragonriding skill in front of NPC, flew to 45.63 54.82 TOM TOM coordinates to The Azure Span, clicked on the Case of Fresh Gleamfish which doesn't dismount you and then used the Bronze timelock to get back to the NPC. Clicked on the NPC and used the dialogue box. Got the achievement 'Three Minutes or It's Free' as the bait was brought in under 3 minutes and the rare spawned. No toy yet though. Next time I guess.

Still bugged. Used Bronze timelock to get back instantly and the NPC is standing there fishing but isn't interactable.

For those of you suggesting this is a bug, I think I figured out what the issue might be. It's not a bug. First and foremost, the Great Shellkhan has to be up. Check to make sure this is affirmative.
1. Talk to Patient Vaargo first. There will be dialogue concerning specific bait. You HAVE to see this first, or my thought is, the game doesn't register your character's knowledge of this bait.
2. Mount up and activate Bronze Timelock.
3. Fly to Azure Span (45, 55) and pick up Case of Fresh Gleamfish.
4. Mount up and activate Bronze Timelock.
5. You will be teleported to Thaldraszus (38, 68) right next to Patient Vaargo. Speak to Patient Vaargo and hand over the Case of Fresh Gleamfish. Grats on your achievement.
6. Position yourself in a way that the turtle spin won't knock you off the edge of the cliff and kill the Great Shellkhan.
7. ?
8. Profit.

I tried everything. Did the WQ, logged out and back in, flew out of the area and back, nothing worked. Patient Vaargo is there and fishing, but isn't interacting. So, as of today it's still bugged for at least some people.

Finally got it to work today after many unresponsive attempts from the NPC. I noticed that he can be spoken to prior to being given the bait, as he will give you a hint as to what is required. I had never seen that dialogue before, but it worked when it showed up.

Seems to work just fine. Went to Azure Span to grab the item (45.6 54.8), hearthstoned back to Valdrakken, flew to the Patient Vaargo (38.54 68.48) and handed in the item. Got the achievement, boss became active, I killed him and got the toy item.

My Bronze reverse thing seemed to remove itself as I approached the Gleaming Fish crate (I didn't dismount) so I just ported back to Thaldraszus and flew back down to Patient Vaargo and handed over the Crate, killed the big turtle, got the 3 minute achievement and toy from the kill.

So don't panic if you cant use the Timestop method.

As of 03/16 at 1814 hours, cannot interact with Patient Vaargo. Got the fish, made it back to the area in less than 3 min, Vaargo won't talk to me. Level 68 druid. I've tried dropping the fish and getting it again and tried logging out and back in.

So I got mine to work. Delivered the bait to Vaargo, got the achievement. Problem is nothing happened after that. Shellkhan never moved

This was super easy! I got the crate from the Island in The Azure Span, took me about 2 min to get to Valdrakken taking the Camp Antonidas FP. Quickly let everyone know in Valdrakken I was getting ready to summon and wqas able to quickly take it down with a Hunter who joined along! I was super lucky and I got 2 toys along with a few greys and some rep! I got Mage's Chewed Wand and I got The Super Shellkhan Gang as my main rewards if anyone is interested. Good luck to everyone on this, it is very straightforward if you do just a little prep before and make sure you have the FP to get from Camp Antonidas to Valdrakken! Happy Hunting :)

Worked for me today. I tried the day before and wasn't able to talk to him but when I check today I could interact. Used the Bronze Timelock like others suggested and was able to get the achievement as well. Good luck everyone, if it's not working just come back and keep checking!
