How to defeat Retinus the Seeker with two pets:

Pets used:
Slot 1: Unborn Val'kyr. Skills: Shadow Slash, Curse of Doom, Unholy Ascension.
Slot 2: Fel Flame. Skills: Flame Breath, Scorched Earth, Conflagrate.
Slot 3: any pet lvl 1+

Fight:

round 1: Curse of Doom
round 2: Shadow Slash
round 3: Unholy Ascension
round 4: Scorched Earth
round 5: Conflagrate

The absolute best strategy to defeat all pets, if you don't have a large roster or are new to pet battles, is to use an entire team of level one pets, as these legendary pets scale with your pet's level. When the pet is scaled to your level at level one, it loses most of its abilities and difficulty.

To easily defeat all pets, simply use three level one pets that are strong against the pet's family type.

I found a way to beat Retinus without the Unborn Val'kyr, as they are difficult to find. The Fel Flame is the only absolutely absolutely necessary pet, but I tried a few combinations and it looks like you can be pretty flexible with the other two. Your second pet needs Black Claw, and your third needs any ability similar to Stampede, a multi-hitter that increases enemy damage taken by 100%. Hunting Party is ideal, but not necessary.

Your battle should look like this:

Round 1:
Retinus prepares Void Crash, your team takes no damage
Your Fel Flame uses either Scorched Earth or Immolation. Both last 9 rounds.
Round 2:
Retinus uses Nightmare
Your Fel Flame uses its other 9-round spell
Round 3:
Retinus uses Chaos Beam
Your Fel Flame uses Flame Breath. It is important that you use this one last.
Void crash stuns your Fel Flame.
Round 4:
Swap in your Black Claw pet.
Retinus uses Chaos Beam
Retinus should have 3 DoTs right now from Scorched Earth, Flame Breath, and the Immolation on your living Fel Flame. It will take damage from all three, amplified by Black Claw damage.
Round 5:
Retinus uses Chaos Beam
You apply Black Claw
Round 6:
Retinus uses Nightmare. Your Black Claw pet is killed.
Switch to your Stampede pet.
Round 7:
Retinus prepares Void Crash, your team takes no damage
Your pet uses Stampede/Flock/Hunting Party

If this does NOT kill Retinus, continue using your Stampede pet until it dies, then use your Fel Flame's Flame breath to kill it.

EDIT: After a downvote of this post I was testing my team over and over and over. I didn't get any response so I can only guess why I have got a downvote, but I think It happened because it's not so obvious how to use Fel Flame, especially H/H breed. So I have decided to describe it in more details.

Team 1:
Infected Squirrel (Any breed) - 2, 2, x. H/P breed is preferred.
Spawn of Onyxia (Any breed) - 2, 2, x

Infected Squirrel:
1 - Creeping Fungus
2-3 - Stampede. Infected Squirrel will be stunned at the end of the 3rd round. Very rarely P/B breed can die here for the first time. If this happens just restart.
4 - pass
5 - Stampede. Infected Squirrel dies.

Spawn of Onyxia:
1 - Scorched Earth
2 - Tail Sweep

String for Rematch addon: Retinus the Seeker::2227JJ:2214F9:N:N:Infected Squirrel: 2-1-pass-1\nSpawn of Onyxia: 2-1

If you don't have Spawn of Onyxia you can use Fel Flame instead.

Team 2:

Team:
Infected Squirrel (H/P) - 2, 2, 2. Breed doesn't matter, but H/P breed can stay alive for one additional round, so will do more damage.
Spawn of Onyxia (P/P) - 2, 2, x. Breed doesn't matter, but P/P breed is the best for max damage.

Infected Squirrel:
1 - Creeping Fungus
2-3 - Stampede. Infected Squirrel will be stunned at the end of the 3rd round.
4 - pass
5+ - Stampede. Infected Squirrel dies.

Spawn of Onyxia:
1 - Scorched Earth
2 - Tail Sweep

Fel Flame can be used instead of Spawn of Onyxia. Any breed will work, but H/P breed is preferred for max damage. Use Scorched Earth ability and then Flame Breath. Fel Flame does less damage than Spawn of Onyxia, so sometimes you will need to use Flame Breath more than once. If you use low damage breeds of Fel Flame and Infected Squirrel didn't die for the first time in the 4th round then you can use Corpse Explosion in the 5th round and Stampede in the 6th round. It will maximize your damage.

Soloable with Ruby Droplet.

Ruby Droplet:
Absorb
Dive
Drain Blood

Drain blood ignores mitigation Seeker has.
Use dive when Retinus uses the 2 turn stun skill when it's about to hit (When the debuff is at 1 turn).
Rise up from dive, use Blood drain, spam absorb till both are of CD.

Rinse and repeat for EZ WIN.

i simply set up a team of lvl 1 dragonkin pets (just a suggestion to keep it easy for people who are new to pet battles) - no special strategy, abilities or anything else needed.
winning regular lvl 25 fight against this guy can be a real challenge depending on how many pets you already have collected and which of them might be the right ones for this fight - but when you use a Lvl 1 team, he usually dies pretty fast 👻
just make sure that your pet's first attack does a reasonable amount of dragonkin damage.
the winning pets will get a good amount of xp after the fight and eventually level up (speaking of a lvl 1 team).
so it might be a good idea to find a nice team of easy-to-get pets, gather some clones of pet number 3 and simply replace it with a fresh lvl 1, to make sure your enemy doesn't unlock it's next ability --> ❗this is the case as soon as one of your team is level 2 or higher❗ this way you're able to maintain 'easy-mode'.
pet number 3 is usually the only survivor... but if you're lucky and the enemy is almost down while your pets nr. 1 or 2 are still alive, punch him until only one or two attacks are needed to kill him. then start using the 'pass' button to let him kill all pets that were involved in the fight and therefore qualify for XP. finish him with pet nr. 3. always put the cheapest / weakest pet in slot nr. 3, this way you only have to find a replacement for one easy-to-get-pet 😛
💡- works for any level-scaling pet battle, just chose the right type of pet / dmg / resistance for each fight -💡

1. Unborn Val'kyr:
a. Curse of Doom
b. Unholy Ascension
2. Emerald Proto-Whelp:
a. Proto-strike
b. Breath--repeat
* (use "Ancient Blessing" if you need to heal)
3. Another Dragonkin
Use attacks that are good against magic

If you are doing this with your shadowbarb as a third pet, especially if shadowbarb is above level 1, this strategy worked for me

1. Slot: Ikky - Black Claw, Flock - Ikky dies.
2. Slot: Pandaria Mechanical Dragonling - Breath (took 3 for me)

Just want to point out I hate being forced to do battle pets as much as I hate being forced to PvP, so I loathe this questline. I pray for the days I have to kill stuff to make that XP bar go up. Regardless, if you're finding yourself losing no matter the strategies provided in the comments (which are all great help btw) because the stupid pet you're required to keep in the party is level 2 and you don't have any other level 2 pets; remember the scaling thing with three level one pets? Go and find yourself a world quest that rewards Polished Pet Charms. Buy yourself some Flawless Battle-Training Stones with your newly acquired currency. Now upgrade yourself any pets you have that are ANTI-MAGIC so that all the pets you take to battle are now level 2. I used Azure Windseeker and Lil' Tarecgosa... both died, but the Shadowbarb Hatchling was able to easily finish things off. Maybe an extra few minutes of shlupping around, but worth the large XP boost to get that mount sooner.

Beat this with Scratch (f. swarm, wild winds, predatory strike), Sprite Darter Hatchling (slicing wind, life exchange, moonfire), and SBH ( Shadow Talon, Shadowmeld, Paralyzing Venom)

I haven't seen anyone comment this pet yet so I thought I would.

Note my shadowbarb leveled to 2 on a previous battle, so I used a stone to get my other 2 pets to level 2 as well.

Lil' Nefarian just spam 1 and 2 till he dies

Corrupted Blood 2 then 1 till the fights over. Corrupted blood never even got close to dying, shadowbarb never had to fight.

Bit different to the combos mentioned, but worked well: Azure Windseeker (devastate, breath, sear magic to debuff void crash), Anubisath Idol (sandstorm, crush, deflection to avoid void crash), Blazehound (frenzy, obsidian bite, puppies of the flame to avoid void crash)

this is NOT a "Cageable" battle pet.

Folks, this was the easiest battle between the three you seemingly have to do. Don't ignore them, just suck it up and complete 'em. Trust me, you want to.

I'm no pet collector or pet battle expert by any means.

Retinus is a Magic pet which means he is weak against Dragonkin pets. You'll want to choose a Dragonkin type pet with multiple dragonkin moves.
The opposing pet WILL SCALE to your highest pet level. That means if you have all three pets at level 1, the opposing pet (in this case, Retinus), will be level 1 as well. But if you have a 3, 7, and 1, Retinus will be 7, and he will kick your butt.

My Shadowbarb was a level 2, so I went to New Dalaran into the animal shop (Magical Menagerie) and talked to Serr'ah, the battle pet master. I bought 2 Flawless Battle-Training Stones for 3 polished pet charms each and I was able to level up my pets so my whole team was at level 2. You can receive these polished battle charms from doing missions at your mission board sometimes.

My Dream Team:
Lil' Nefarian
Discarded Experiment
Shadowbarb

Discarded Experiment truly impressed me, doing the most damage; his second move is one that does damage whenever he receives direct damage. Both Lil' Nefarian and Discarded Experiment had 2 dragonkin moves, so they were doing good damage the whole time.

I never had to use Shadowbarb. D.E killed off Retinus pretty easily.

Hope this helps! Retinus is not nearly as bad as the other two pet battle opponents.

I'm new to Pets so had some very limited options. I used 3 Spawn of Onyxia's (lvl 12's).

Each Spawn of Onyxia used Tail Sweep until Retinus the Seeker's Void Crash had 1 round to go, then use Lift-Off to avoid the Crash.

That got me through.

The following strategy worked for me:

Open with Ikky, using Black Claw. You should be able to sneak in 2x Flock. At this point Ikky dies, but you should still have a stack of Black Claw debuff left.
Switch to Twilight Clutch-Sister, cast Twilight Meteorite. With the leftover stack of extra damage, you should leave Retinus at about 1/4 hp if you are lucky. From here, 1-2 Twilight Fire should be enough to finish the battle

Used level 1 Celestial Dragon's Flamethrower, just spammed it till Retinus killed it then I pulled out a level 1 Bronze protowhelp and used it's tail sweep to finish the fight.
Tldr: Use level 1 dragonkins so Retinus only has one ability that's fairly weak.

Soloable with pets level one.
No brainer, they only have one attack.
The first pet was Shadowbarb Hatchling that did not last for too long.
The second pet was Proto-Drake Whelp that took good care of Retinus.
The third pet was Lil´Nefarian that didn´t jump to the arena in the end

You can beat it with 3x Nexus Whelpling (1/2/2)
It's the same old strategy. Just use Arcane Storm at first turn (this will also avoid the stun), then spam Mana Surge and end it with Tail Sweep. I would recommend spam Tail Sweep after the second Mana Surge. Your 2 first pets will die (most likely) but your 3rd pet will end it easily.
