You cannot cast Harpoons while swimming or from the air. You can cast them from land, on a raft, or on the surface of the water with some form of water walking.

Getting Pulled into the water will disconnect your Harpoon from the Lunker. You need to keep your feet on the ground to pull it in. (You can use this to disconnect intentionally).

Using a raft or Water Walking is far riskier than going from land. You're far more likely to get knocked off your raft or take a small amount of damage, enough to deactivate Water Walking. Both will disconnect your Harpoon.

More than one player can Harpoon and loot/skin a Lunker. In fact, it's nearly required for Elites. There are even achievements for it -- It Takes a Tuskarr Buddy, It Takes a Tuskarr Family, and It Takes a Tuskarr Village.

Elite Lunkers such as Gigantic Thresher are very difficult to pull in alone. If you try, you'll usually lose it by getting yanked into the water and losing the connection with your Harpoon. At least one other player with a Harpoon is extremely helpful.

Stop pulling on the Harpoon once the Lunker is over land. This is particularly important if more than one harpooner is working on the fish. If everyone stops pulling, the Lunker will die almost immediately. Pulling it around just slows down the process.

Do NOT kill a Thresher-type Lunker the old-fashioned way -- especially if you're with other players (this does not apply to the 72 Elites). Killing a Thresher Lunker by landing it with harpoons gives loot to everyone who helped pull in the kill. If someone kills the Lunker by damaging it down through combat, the lunker becomes unlootable, although it still can be skinned. This is kill stealing. Just don't. You'll usually find everyone leaving a lunker area if a player starts doing this and won't stop when it's pointed out that this is considered griefing.

Improving the Harpoons on one character does not improve them for everyone. TavioTall Fishing Tale - Strange but True: I stumbled onto a way to pull in Gigantic Threshers alone with an unimproved Harpoon. The problem with Gigantic Threshers is that they pull so strongly that they pull you off your feet, eventually dragging you into the water and dislodging your connection to the Harpoon. Without the Harpoon improvements, I had concluded this wasn't possible.

I was doing some experiments and ended up spearing a Gigantic Thresher on a character with unimproved Harpoons. However, I happened to be standing just behind the Large Lunker Totem and got pulled -- right into the totem, which stopped me from getting dragged into the water. By standing directly behind the totem and keeping it between me and the Gigantic Thresher, I was eventually able to get it up onto land. Every time it pulled, I got slammed into the totem, but just kept backing up to keep the totem between us. It took several minutes, but eventually I landed it. Prismatic Leaper (there's only one kind) - open at Renown 8

Deep Ice Fishing Hole (not just any Ice Fishing Holes) - open at Renown 10, requires Iskaaran Ice Axe and Fishing (50), generally only available when Grimtusk's Fishing Hole is active

Overheated Magma Thresher Pool (not just any Lava Pools) - open at Renown 15 (Lava Fishing), requires Polished Basalt Bracelet

Unlike Prismatic or Ice fishing, these are in dangerous areas where you often need to clear at least one mob to get access.

The pools are often difficult to reach and require standing in very limited spots to reach them (see note about hostile NPCs). You can't use spells such as Levitate or Water Walking, or items such as the Tuskarr Dinghy or Anglers Fishing Raft to reposition.

Since Overheated Magma Thresher Pool is a rarer version of Magma Thresher Pool, you aren't guaranteed you will get the Overheated version. You need to fish out the regular Magma pools to get them to spawn. This isn't a real hardship since you have such a great chance of getting other rare side gathers from this as well.

Thanks for the guide, this was sorely lacking!

However, I'm still not convinced why you even need the Harpoon. It seems like you only need it if you hunt Lunkers in a raid or group, otherwise if you're solo'ing you just kill the Thresher's normally.

However, then you have the problem if you spawn a big rare Lunker like Moth'go Deeploom then you have to be the right class/spec and geared enough to solo him down (He hit very hard and was over 2 mill hp when I did him and I could not even come close to killing him on my squishy shaman).

There just seems to be an assumption in these guides that you're always doing this in a Raid group.

You don't need to tag a lurker with a harpoon to get credit; you can damage it with any attack and get loot credit for it.

I've verified this with my Mage by fire blasting a lurker while actively harpooning another, as well as just hitting the lurker without using my harpoon at all.

The guide is appreciated, but this has got to be one of the worst grinds in the game.

It's not mentioned here, but one thing that initially confused me was that when you find the 3 items needed to spawn Fisherman Tinnak's Ghost and you click on them, nothing happens. I expected the items to show up in my bags so I thought there was some bug or unmet requirement to complete this. Nope, you interact with the 3 items and then the ghost spawns, no actual in-bag items involved.
