Do I have to do it on 4 characters to get all 4 covenant mounts for which this achievement is a requirement, or do I only need to do it once and it will unlock the mounts account-wide?

Requirement for Breaking the Chains, they need to be completed during specific assaults.

If you're interested in Breaking the Chains.. if you ever think you'll be interested in this achievement.. if you think the mount Hand of Salaranga looks mildly interesting.. just start working on On the Offensive NOW please.

Everything else can be done gradually in a planned manner or in many cases can be done in a day.. but this one achievement is the biggest roadblock. Requires 2 activities every covenant assault. Some are simple but some need specific quests which still haven't popped up in 2 months, so chances are you may have to wait months for a specific quest. Just every 3 days, look at what assault is up, look at the 2 achievements needed and see if the required quest is up. A big thanks to Vallix for his comment above.. really helped me out.

This is one of the most time consuming achievements Blizzard has ever added to this game because you're gated not only by assaults, but also the sub-achievements require specific quests which are randomly selected from a large pool and there is the possibility of said quests not showing up for MONTHS.

Easily the worst zone related meta-achievement ever implemented. While other achievements such as the Nazjatar or Mechagon ones had some timegated elements to them, this is literally taking it to the next level. Almost every achievement that you need is simply gated behind the specific covenant assault quest that's required, and many of these quests are "randomly" selected and will not appear most times that the associated assault is up, leading to infinite frustration for no reason. At the time of writing this, almost 2 months since patch came out, several of the achievements have still never appeared on live servers. So what happens if you are in vacation or away from a computer in the 3.5 days that the assault is active for? Potentially you might have to wait well over 2 months before seeing the quest you need again. This compounds to the latest trend that Blizzard seems to be implementing in their game, which is to timegate literally everything they do in an obviously desperate effort to make the 2 weeks of content they produced last 8+ months. See Renown, Legendaries, Domination Shards, Weekly Chests, Conduits, Sockets, Valor Points, Conquest Points and so on. None of these systems should take weeks or months of our time, and yet they do because partecipation metrics are more important to them than actually making the game enjoyable. People who want to play more, should be rewarded, not hindered in every possible way. Just my 2 cents anyway.

EDIT: As of 25/09/2021, blizzard made it so you only need 6 of the achievements in order to complete the meta. This means that you can now get this done in virtually a couple weeks at most. This happened after the meta was finally achievable in full only last week. In other words, we are basically idiots for playing the game and waiting for months, i guess. Since most stuff these devs push out is broken, more often than not the best course of action is not to waste your time until 1-2 patches later, when inevitably it gets nerfed into the ground. Literally adding insult to injury to people who dedicated their time and effort to get this (just like it happened with farming anima, which was hard earned in s1 and became a literal joke in s2, therefore invalidating all previous efforts from players). I am not expert, but people who put in dedication and effort should be rewarded, not made to feel like idiots by systematically easing requirements for every single reward the game has to offer as time goes by, in a desperate effort to retain subscriptions over time.

Wowhead staff - Please make a front page article about how stupid this achievement is. You could highlight how 0% of profiles have obtained a pretty simple achievement over 2 months into the patch.

The way things have been going so far, they'll see it, they'll read the outrage in the comments, and there will be changes to this achievement or Breaking the Chains in 9.1.5. Thank you...

It's worth noting that, with the change in 9.1.5 to allow players to easily swap between covenants, the easiest way to purchase all 4 mounts that require this achievement then becomes to just get the Death's Advance rep and meta achievement on one character, then swap between covenants to purchase all 4 mounts on that one character.

Even with the achievement finally being account-wide, unless you plan to farm Death's Advance rep on 4 different characters, this is the way to go.

There was a time when I was actively farming the achievement. Min-maxing the rep grind, spending hours in Korthia, logging in late at night & early in the morning for the tormentors achieve.. wish I had done nothing of the sort. By the time the final quest shows up all semblance of an 'achievement' will be long gone. Might ride the hand mount for a day... maybe.

This Achievement is NOT account wide, causing you to do needless Cov swapping to buy each mount from the Deaths Advance Quartermaster.

The best part about this achievement is its not account wide, so if you waited the 70+ days to complete this and thought it be account wide since it is a META achievement ITS NOT so here is to another 70+days of doing it on alts just to get the other mounts....

Once you've earned the achievement On the Offensive, you'll be able to buy one of these mounts, depending on your covenant.
The achievement is account-wide with a recent hotfix, but you need exalted reputation with Death's Advance to buy the mounts.
They cost 1000 Stygia each, sold by Duchess Mynx in Korthia.

As of today this achievement has been hotfixed to be account-wide.

Breaking the Chains, the meta-achievement this belongs to, has also been made account-wide.

My friend just popped the achievement by logging in to one of his alts and it now says "Complete 6 of the Covenant Assault achievements listed below". Looks like it was hotfixed to make it easier... Pretty disappointing change for players who actively grinded it out.

This achievement has been updated, now you need only to complete 6 out of 9 assault achievements to get it, was a little late, but still good change nonetheless

With the new patch, you only have to complete 6 of these achievements to obtain the meta.

Once you are exalted with Death's Advance and have completed this achievement, you can buy one of the mounts below
Kyrian = Battle-Hardened Aquilon
Necrolord = Battlefield Swarmer Harness
Night Fae = Winter Wilderling Harness
Venthyr = Pale Gravewing
