About the Author
Hello! I'm
Impakt
, the range DPS officer for
BDGG
, the #2 North American guild. I have been playing WoW for over a decade, and have been a high-end raider since MoP. I currently play Hunter and Warlock for BDGG, but I have played many other classes and specs competitively in past tiers. My primary focus in-game is progression raiding. Macros
Macros are simple, in-game tools which allow you to sequence spells together, create custom names and icons, cast different abilities depending on whether the target is friendly or hostile, define targeting conditions, and much, much more. While the amount of options can be complex, making them is easy, so in this section we'll go over how to set them up yourself.
To open the in-game Macro interface, type "/macro" or "/m".
Choose between the General and Character-specific macro tabs. Then click the "New" button on the macro window.
Choose a Name and an Icon so you can easily recognize your macro, then click "Okay."
Select your new macro and use the text editor below to tell it what to do. If copying ours below, you can simply copy/paste the text in.
Click the "Save" button, and drag your macro icon onto your bars, which will allow it to be used just like any other spell from your spellbook.
To close the window, click "Exit", or just press Escape.

Pet Attack Macros
By baking /petattack into some of your abilities, your pet will become more responsive and switch targets without delay. Prior to Battle for Azeroth, this was necessary for
Kill Command
; now it seems like this functionality has been baked into that ability. It's still useful to keep it as a macro so when you spam the Kill Command button you can tell your pet where to attack even if it is on cooldown. I wouldn't recommend using this on Cobra Shot or Chimaera Shot since you'll sometimes want to quickly shoot a target without removing your pet from its current target (example: Explosive orbs in Mythic+).
How to use:
Replace your existing ability buttons with the appropriate macro.
Kill Command:
Not necessary, but helpful.
#showtooltip Kill Command
/petattack
/cast Kill Command
Barbed Shot:
Usually your pet will automatically switch targets when you cast Barbed Shot, but it works inconsistently when targets are close together. This makes it consistent.
#showtooltip Barbed Shot
/petattack
/cast Barbed Shot
Multi-Shot:
It's important to use this on Multi-Shot so that your pet is cleaving where you're shooting. In large groups, cast Multi-Shot on the target nearest the center of the group to maximize the targets hit.
#showtooltip Multi-Shot
/petattack
/cast Multi-Shot
A Murder of Crows:
Optional, only really necessary if you are using this as an opening attack anywhere.
#showtooltip A Murder of Crows
/petattack
/cast A Murder of Crows
Pet Passive Macro
Pet control is extremely important as any pet class, particularly Beast Mastery. Most of the time you will never need to use this, but occasionally you will want to more carefully control where you pet runs and who it attacks. The best way to do this is to have "petattack" macroed into some damage abilities with a separate macro for "petpassive" which sets your pet to passive, keeping it by your side. This allows you to more readily control where your pet goes, which is especially useful if you are trying to be careful not to pull extra adds in dungeons or raids.
/petpassive
Basic Attack Macros
Baking your pet's Basic Attacks (Claw, Bite, or Smack) into abilities will maximize how many are cast. Basic Attacks have a 3 second cooldown, but your pet doesn't always immediately auto-cast it on cooldown for unknown reasons, which results in numerous missed casts in a boss fight. The average delay is about 0.6 seconds. You can force out more basic attacks by adding them to all of your offensive abilities in macros. As you are spamming your abilities, there is a greater chance that basic attacks will be cast on cooldown or as close to cooldown as possible. If you're someone who spams their buttons during GCDs, the actual gain from this should reduce the basic attack cooldown to about 3.1-3.3 seconds (down from 3.6 seconds) on average. Note that you still leave your pet's basic attack on auto-cast, the purpose of these macros is to try and cast it sooner within that 0.6 second window.
Is this necessary?
No, but you gain extra DPS for doing it, and there's no downside. It's highly recommended.
These are the necessary lines you should add to offensive abilities in a macro (just put them at the bottom of your macro)
/cast Claw
/cast Bite
/cast Smack
Below you will find examples of these macros (these also include the /petattack macros from above, so only use one or the other). Remember, in order to use these you just replace your existing ability buttons with these macros.

Spirit Mend Macro
A Spirit Beast's
Spirit Mend
is quite powerful now. It's worthwhile to turn its autocast OFF so you can save it to use as a mini healing cooldown. This macro will cast it on whatever friendly player you're mousing over on your raid frames, and if you're not mousing over anyone it will cast it on you instead. Also note that the ability only has a 25 yard range, so either you or your pet needs to run into range in order to use it.
#showtooltip Spirit Mend
/cast Spirit Mend
Aspect of the Turtle Cancelaura
Most of the time, you will use
Aspect of the Turtle
to avoid a specific instance or burst of damage. This usually means that you do not want to have turtle up for the full 10 seconds since you would be unable to attack for the full duration. The solution to this is to macro a "cancelaura" into one of your other abilities that you can hit to cancel Aspect of the Turtle when you are ready to resume attacking.
#showtooltip Cobra Shot
/cancelaura Aspect of the Turtle
/cast Cobra Shot
Misdirection Macros
This macro will cast
Misdirection
on whatever player you are mousing over on your raid/party frames (i.e. your tank), and if you're not mousing over someone it will cast on your focus target. If that also fails, it will simply cast on your current target:
#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast
This macro will cast Misdirection on your pet.
#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast Misdirection
Counter Shot Macro
This
Counter Shot
macro interrupts your focus target, and if you have no focus target set it will interrupt your current target instead.
#showtooltip Counter Shot
/cast
AoE Ability Macros
Normally to use an AoE ability, it takes two actions. First you need to press the bind for the ability, then you need to click on the target location. By macroing into your ability's cast, you reduce that to a single action since the ability will automatically target your cursor to place it. This will especially be useful for Hunters using the new legendary,
Soulforge Embers
. Note that you will not get a targeting reticule with this since it's all done in one button press.
#showtooltip Freezing Trap
/cast Freezing Trap
#showtooltip Tar Trap
/cast Tar Trap
#showtooltip Flare
/cast Flare
Note: You can optionally replace the @cursor with @player to have the traps automatically drop at your feet, but that is probably of more use to a Survival Hunter.
Addons
Addons are powerful tools that can be used to both customize your gameplay experience, ranging from graphical overlays, replacement action bars, and unit/raid frames, to performance enhancements such as rotation helping spell reminders, buff/debuff tracking, popup reminders, and boss warnings. Here are some of the highly recommended and commonly used BM Hunter addons, which are certainly not required to play, but can go a long way toward increasing the information available to you in combat or simply make for a more pleasant viewing experience.
Unlike Macros, managing Addons is done outside of the game, but our
How to Install and Maintain Addons Guide
will take you step-by-step through the process.
Improved Stable Frame
Revamps the Hunter stable frame to show all of your pet stable slots on a single page rather than 6 pages. Makes it easier to move and organize your pets since you can now drag pets anywhere in your stable freely.
RangeDisplay
Shows how far away you are from your target. Useful for positioning yourself at max range, plus some talents like Stampede only have a 30-yard range and this will let you know if it will hit your current target or not.
DejaCharacterStats
The base UI removes some important information from the character sheet such as Focus regeneration, GCD time, and speed. This addon restores all of the old details from the pre-Legion character sheet and adds more. Can be customized to show whatever stats you want.
Deadly Boss Mods
Boss mods are a must have for dungeons and raids. An alternative to DBM is
BigWigs Bossmods
.
WeakAuras 2
This addon helps you keep track of buffs, resources, cooldowns, and pretty much anything you can think of. Check out the WeakAuras section of this guide for a selection of useful Beast Mastery Hunter WeakAuras.
