The best spot I could find to get as many points per dive as possible is around /way 64, 16.
There are a ton of Sunken Relics and Ancient Relics (you'll need Abyss Anglers: Pressurized Eyeglass to pick up Ancient Relics). Just swim around the giant skeleton and grab as many as you can.
When you reach about 150 breath, go and pick up the extra air at:
/way 66, 26
/way 64, 18

I usually managed to get at least 50.000 - 55.000 points per dive with my best try reaching 69.000 points.
I did this with a fully upgraded suit so your YMMV depending on available breath and swimming speed.

While the progress on this achievement is visible on any character, you cannot add to that progress with multiple characters. Have to do all one million points on one character, it seems. So if you're looking to grab some Fused Vitalities or something while working on this achievement, it's not working out that way at the time of this comment.

The best way to farm this is by clicking on Ancient and Sunken Relics. I recommend using an Inky Black Potion, which makes them extra visible. Once you click one, you can start swimming away and still get credit.

Why didnt they add some kind of multiplier to do various things when farming score?
I was done with all other achievements with score about 120k.
Now only clicking relics for 4 hours, insane.

No! Just no! This is in no way fun enough to motivate an achievement for 1 000 000 points. 250k is bad enough. Blizzard really gotta get a grip and realise theyre making a game for fun and stop adding this sort of stuff cause they thing it makes for more subscribes. Theyre just preying on mentally ill people who cant leave anything half done!

Halfway through the achievement in time of writing and I figured I'd drop some tips and tricks that I've found while doing it that may help speed your journey up (for it's a long achievement).

Get all the other achievements first. This means you get access to all the upgrades, which will help with this achieve. At the end you're quite quick and have access to 550 seconds of dive time.
Go for the sunken relics. They're worth 500/750 score each, and by far the quickest way to farm I've found. Going full runs and swimming about clicking them nets you 35-45k score per dive.
There's no need to stay for the entire time from when you've clicked an artifact until you get score. Keep them in LoS, then you can click, give it a split second, then swim away to the next one, you'll get the score anyway.
There's two air-refills I've found. One is at the bottom of the "First chasm", under where the champion is, near the bottom in one of the geysers. The second is in the "Second chasm" to the north, also in one of the geysers. They're marked with blue spheres on the mini-map. They give 100 extra seconds per refill, to the 550 second total.
The best area I've found is around the "Second Chasm" to the north. The relics in the area respawn quick enough that you can just make laps around it.
You can spam your 1 ability quite liberally, it's got no cost and no cd.
Make sure you surface and do not run out of air (after you got the drown achievement), it gives bonus score.

I'll add more stuff as I find it, I'll be here a while yet.

Bought all upgrades. Bought one of every cosmetic. Have all Abyss Anglers achieves except this one... and still only at 512,725 / 1,000,000.

While the activity was fun at first, the other achieves definitely became a slog collecting 250, 500 etc.
Not fun enough to trudge through another half million points so I will call it quits for now.

I've been stuck at 767675/1000000 for the past few days, which is quite a nice number, but whatever I do may it be fishes, relics or whatever, I can't get any progress on the achiev.

After you have purchased all of the upgrades from Jeju, the path below yielded me the most points (48,000-50,000) per run, only grabbing Sunken Treasures (500 points) & Ancient Treasures (750 points).

TIPS!
1. When clicking a treasure, you don't have to sit and wait for your castbar to finish. You can start moving to the next treasure as long as you don't go out of range and are still in the line of site. (I start moving when cast is about 50%. This yielded me about 8,000 extra points per run when I figured this out. especially around the clusters of treasures)
2. Use Dash as much as possible
3. Use the grapple anchor points as well

Once you enter the dive, immediate hit the ocean floor.

You are now at the treasure area. There are about 30 scattered all over and respawn fairly quickly. (You can probably run around this area 4 to 5 times before you run out of oxygen)

There is also a Legendary Gemscale Nymph in this area. Takes 2 shots. Kill it if you see it. 500 points (1 up at time, but respawns pretty fast)

BEWARE OF THE SHARK! Use Dash to outrun him and you will be fine.

If your run back to back to back, the treasures will stay in the same place. Make adjustments to your path for optimal points.

If you are just collecting Angler Pearls, anything over 5k points is a waste of time.
5k points = 428 Angler Pearls - Best option. Get 5k, end dive, repeat.
20k = 900 Angler Pearls
52k = 1000 Angler Pearls

Waste of time. I held out on the whole Abyss Anglers for a few weeks and tried it first today. I got everything done except this, in about 4 hours. It was fun, for maybe the first 30 minutes. Very bugged, very repetitive, no real rewards except 1 xmog set that i'll never use. No mount, no title, nothing really. After I had gotten all other achievements, I had a total of 200k points. I did a couple more rounds to get to 250k. That really should have been the maximum.

Not only is it not worth doing this 1M points achievement, but i'd say it's not worth doing abyss anglers at all. It was a waste of 4 hours, and there's no way i'm spending another 8-12 hours to get 5 achievement points. #$%^ this @#$%.

Remembers me of the stupid Torghast achievement where you had to collect 250k Phantasm. What a pointless slog. Could at least reward a title or better a fish pet.

Couple notes:

#1: the locations of the treasures stay the same from dive to dive, but will reset daily. So if you get into a groove like I did, don't do what I did and leave dives for the next day. I was averaging 67-69k per dive one day, and left a few dives when I got tired. Came back the next day and couldn't get much more than 52k each dive because the locations of the treasures had moved and weren't as ideal as the day before. I had to relearn a new route and it was just annoying. If you can do this in one sitting, do it!

#2 You can start moving away from the treasure after about half a second and you will continue to cast while moving. You'll get the feel for it, but if you move away too quickly you'll range the treasure. If you break line of sight with the treasure it will also fail to collect.

#3 the maximum amount of pearls you can receive is 1000 for 50k points. At some point, you should do some quick math to determine how many dives you need to finish this achievement based on your average points per dive, and then multiple that by 1000 pearls (assuming you can get 50k+) -- if you need less dives for the achievement than you need to clear out the vendor, you can easily exit the dive at exactly 50k points to speed up your pearl acquisition while still working towards the achievement. In other words: maxing out 65-70k dives could put you at a pearl disadvantage in the end, because you aren't rewarded for points past 50k and could finish this achievement without having enough pearls to buy all the cosmetics. Do the math and plan!

#4 the skeleton *IS* the best place to farm chests, but you shouldn't beeline for it. Spend 100 breath picking up treasures on your way to the first refill, spend another 100 breath working towards the second refill, then start your circuit around the skeleton for max efficiency. There is one REALLY annoying shark in the back by the skeleton. Don't bother killing it - it has a VERY fast respawn. It tends to stay where you lead it, so if you aggro it, swim as far up as you can to leash it up high, and it will leave you alone for a long while.

#5 with max dive gear + both refills, each dive is 10m flat. This is useful when calculating the amount of dives you need to complete this achievement and clear the vendor because you can then also determine how much time you're going to spend in this god-forsaken trench.

This achievement seems to be character based, not account based.
I farmed 500k on 1 character and decided to do it on my alt and I got 0 progress.

Just lending my voice, this is just way too many points. You can get 250K by doing the rest of the achieves, and it's reasonably fun and different.

I got over 350K finishing the all the achievements, and would be willing to keep going for 500K, but 1M is just unreasonable. It's not fun enough and there aren't even enough rewards to spend that many pearls on. Maybe if the Fused Vitality wasn't limited, but unlike the Abundance event, I have no motivations to continue playing this silly side event. There's not even any lore bits to enjoy.

For those who use the “Routes” addon, here is my route for farming treasures. I get around 65k points per dive, if it helps with the goal of reaching 250 chests or 1M points.

Btw, try not to pick up the second oxygen on your first lap if you’re above 250 oxygen.

TLDR

Zoom around clicking on treasures.

It may be obvious, but save this achievement for last. The other abyss anglers achievements will work towards this goal passively while you upgrade your diving suit.

If you are vision-impaired, some people recommend the inky black potion to better see the treasures, but I found it completely unnecessary. The treasures are easy to see with a purple glow.

The area with the dragon skeleton has a large amount of treasures which respawn quickly.

Rant

There is no multiplier to your score for completing different objectives such as collecting fish, mythic fish, swimming through schools, or catching small creatures. Unfortunately there is no incentive to do anything but click treasures to increase your score.

In my limited testing, doing these dives in a group does not increase your personal score. HOWEVER, if you were to create a large group for spamming the mythic fish, I could see this being rewarding. With a large group the mythic fish would be caught quickly and you can spam-spear him multiple times meaning a large amount of points in a short of amount of time. And the mythic fish respawns immediately.

Unfortunately there is no "Abyss Angler" title for completing all these achievements. The rewards are pretty lackluster in my opinion.

All in all, it's not the worst mini game the developers have come up with. Good luck!

just noticed that i only get points towards this achievement on the character that i assume bought the previous bits of dive gear, so dont try to do this on alts that didnt start doing the abyss anglers stuff.
