. Data is updated once per week.
With the onset of Legion, Survival is a brand new spec, moving from a ranged spec with increased elemental damage compared to other hunter specs, to now being a melee class that relies on a mixture of pet damage, melee weapon damage and a revamped set of traps. Focus remains the primary resource for SV hunters for most special weapon attacks and pet attacks, though SV no longer has any active regeneration, but instead relies on higher passive regen and weaving in focus-free traps. Survival has reasonably good Single Target options, strong burst AoE through talents, and can be one of the more mobile melee specs when talented into

What Makes Survival Special
After years of working with
, one of the strongest hunter NPCs in World of Warcraft, hunters finally have a chance to take a similar fighting style with the change of Survival as the first playable Melee Hunter spec. We can now fight right beside our pets, even timing some abilities with our pets to simultaneously attack an enemy from both sides.
While all hunters feel a calling to the wild, some serve as a reflection of its brutality. To them, the hunt is defined by unrelenting ferocity, where survival means facing one’s enemy eye-to-eye . . . and is always accompanied by merciless bloodshed. Weapons of great range are abandoned for instruments of close-quarters combat. Survival hunters are instinctive and crafty on the prowl, employing loyal beasts and laying deceptive traps to see their enemies undone. For these hunters know that to truly understand what it means to survive, one must first become familiar with the cruel face of death.
Despite being a relatively knew spec in WoW, the spirit of the melee Survival Hunter has been alive throughout the world for ages: Princess Mononoke and the Red Viper of Dorn, Oberyn Martell were both Survival Hunters. Historians all agree that when former United States President Teddy Roosevelt said "Speak softly and carry a big stick", he was referring to Survival Hunters and their Polearms.
In fact, after realizing the full extent of how amazing the new Survival Hunter spec was, Blizzard had to introduce an entire new class to the game, the demon hunter, for players who wanted to play melee and wanted to be called Hunters, but were worried they weren't good-looking enough to play Survival.
