Rank 1 Lightning Bolt , to a Elemental specced shaman like me, costs NO mana. It also has the same crit chance for rank 12 Lightning Bolt. I found this very useful in Outlands, so you might want to try this too. If you are going to die in PvE and have little mana and little life, you may want to try this :

1 : Save ALL your mana for heals
2 : Water shield up! More mana = more health
3 : Spam rank 1 Lightning Bolts like mad, not to forget they have -1 second casting time off, which makes it only 0.5 second cast. Don't cast too fast however, as you may use up the Clearcasting buff when the bolt hits and crits, and you cast another rank 1 too fast.
4 : Shoot Chain Lightning, or any shocks with NO mana costs when Rank 1 Lightning Bolt crits and you gain Clearcasting, which means the Chain Lightning costs NO mana.
5 : Rinse and repeat

Now who says Elemental is not leveling spec? :P (Okay well you wont be leveling totally with this trick, but whatever. Elemental, to me was easier to quest and grind with than Enc.)

Currently (Feb 08, patch 2.3) broken with Lightning Overload, this rank and apparently ranks below this one do normal damage instead of half.

And when u use shield on shaman does parry go down the higher the level u are?

Standard pulling spell for solo play. Light the mobs up with this until they get in melee range, then shock them.

Getting bored as a healer in a group? If you're group is doing ok on health and the fight is almost over, go ahead and spam a few Lightning Bolts on the last mob (only in lower level instances) but don't overtake the tanks aggro.

Fun fact: Spamming Lightning Bolts with Bloodlust up when the Curator evocates will result in 2000+ dps in full healing gear. Since most damage meters (WWS included) only count dps during time you're actually dealing damage, this means you'll top the dps meter for this fight.

You'll be at the bottom for damage done, but your damage per second will be through the roof ;)

My Shaman just went Elemental last week when I hit seventy. I'm in mostly blues, hitting LB's for around 1300-1400 damage.

Can you raiding Eleshams tell me what your bolts are connecting for, roughly? Say in t4 gear or t5?

I can see where you guys are coming from, i racked a 3500 damage crit in Botanica when I got the Holy Fury buff from the Mind Controlled Bloodwarder Mender.

Quote to my guild leader: "For the good of the guild, we need to get me a permanent +290 spell damage, this is ridiculous..."

A suggestion for Elemental Shamans:

Taking into account the mana cost reduction from both the Convection Rank 5 (http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=16112) and the Glyph of Lightning Bolt (http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=41536), this spell will cost only 8% of base mana, down from 10%.

Low cost or not, this spell is now only a filler between cooldowns when you have nothing else to cast, since its damage got pretty gimped (lolwrath does more @80...).
The only thing special in LB casts is the overload, but that's not enough to make me use LB for more than just a CD filler.

Elemental tree really needs more talents, we're like 4 short. Improving LB a bit wouldn't hurt.

For the young shaman pre-talents trying to decide whether their melee does more dps or their lightning bolt does more, this spell adds up to approximately 14 dps.

Looks like they seriously reduced the mana cost of this spell at lower levels. I remember the first shaman I rolled, the first ten levels or so were quite painful, because after every 2-3 mobs I would have to sit and drink.

Now, at level 3 LB costs just 5 mana which means I can spam it to my heart's content and not have to worry about sitting to drink. Blizz just made levelling hybrids (and perhaps all casters) considerably easier, as I bet the first few ranks of Wrath, Frostbolt, Smite, etc got the same treatment.

Hooray for less downtime!

Charred Glyph lets you freely move around while spamming the spell...

it makes pvp so much more delicious. it's also fun in general.

As of patch 5.3, lightning bolt can be cast while moving even at level one. I'm not sure if the glyph was removed, but this change sure makes low level BoA shamans somewhat OP.
