By far one of the most amazing kiting skills ever, no cast time, instant, short cooldown,mana efficient and it is able to hit multiple targets. This has a slower effect than frostbolt does so it is superiro to rank 1 frostbolt spam. Once you master the aiming of this spell you are nearly untouchable by mellee. Artic reach can effect Cone of Cold to make the range and distance it covers greater.

Cone of Cold is a Mage's best friend in group PvP and solo PvP. In group PvP, Cone of Cold is best used immediately after using Frost Nova on a group of closely packed enemies, freezing them in place. If the proper talent points have been spent in the Frost tree, then Cone of Cold will more than likely critical strike the frozen enemies it touches.

In solo PvP, Cone of Cold is best used if your enemy gets too close to you, and you need to escape. Pop Cone of Cold on them, get some distance, and start throwing some Frostbolts! Using the Frost Nova>Cone of Cold technique is not optimal, since Frostbolt will do much more damage to a frozen enemy than Cone of Cold will.

I use this constantly actually. Despite it's higher mana cost, it crits very often if you're frost specced.. somewhat making it more efficient. I don't use it everytime it's up, but it's a great spell for that last 4% or so.

In pvp you want as much instant damage as possible (If I could sit there and launch frostbolt I would love to). So fireblast isn't the only thing you should be using. Personally I don't mind spending extra mana, just to get another instant cast in (esp. since it crits for 1k+ for me).

Very usefull for kiting because of its slowing affect, I wouldn't personaly use it for aoe damage Unless I speced into it and got the extra damage.

This a very powerful spell especially for a Ice specced mage. Use it often it can really save you along with the mage's other powerful instant cast spells.

Cone of cold can be a very effective kiting tool if used correctly. One of the most amazing things to do with this is to be running away from an enemy and jump, then use your mouse to turn 180 degrees in the air, cast this spell, then turn back 180 degrees to face forward again. While you're in the air, you continue going in the direction that you jumped, so you continue to run away from your attacker. All in all, you lose no speed from turning around to cast it, and your pursuer is now slowed to 50%.

Techniques like this are the difference between a good mage and an amazing mage.

It should also be noted that Cone of Cold is one of the few spells with a good mana to damage ratio that cannot be spell reflected by a warrior. Therefore it's great for when you see a warrior with a shield out.

Cone of Cold is a great spell to use in tandem with Fireball/Frostbolt and Fire Blast for Shatter spec Mages.

Root the target in place with Frost Nova. Load up a Fireball or Frostbolt (depending on gear and spec). Once it hits, immediately fire off a Fireblast followed by a Cone of Cold. If spec'd appropriately, you could then follow up with a Blastwave.

This is a massive payload of damage within a matter of seconds, and it allows you to stay mobile. If the target's still not dead, you can blink for distance (if melee) and fire off another Fireball/Frostbolt + Fire Blast. If you have Frostbite and get a touch of luck, most of those attacks will be criticals.

Not many opponents can withstand that.

Untalented Cone of Cold slows by 50% for 8 sec, with full Permafrost by 60% for 11 sec and with full Permafrost and Chilled to the Bone by 70% for 11 sec (which is compareable to Crippling Poison).

Having tested this on the training dummies in Org, I'm pretty sure it has the same radius as Frost Nova, even though Wowhead's entry for Frost Nova no longer indicates the radius.

Darn it.

In MoP (based on build on 1/08/2012) it's slow duration has been reduced to 6 secs, it's CD without reduction talents is at 10 sec. We can't use it to kite mobs anymore as we can in Cata with it's 8 sec slow + 8 (/w talents) sec CD.

If you have any issues casting Cone of Cold during Children's Week:

Once a Cone of Cold has been placed into your inventory, your Cone of Cold macros may fail as they are attempting to use the item instead of the spell of the same name. We have similar issues with Frozen Orb and Frozen Orb. The solution is to add parentheses at the end of the spell name. This is similar to the syntax used when we used to be able to select the rank of a spell to use. So, the correct macro is:

/use Cone of Cold()

Note: /cast and /use are synonymous.

It appears that WITH the glyph upgrade, this spell deals less damage than ice lance WITHOUT shatter. The glyph seems to be mostly use less and CoC is now simply for the snare. With the loss of fire blast to frost mages, if you're looking for an instant to spam to shave off that last bit of hp, ice lance is your best bet.
