One of the new Level 90 Priest Talents as of Beta Build 15508

The tooltip says it does "Divine Damage", since the schools are listed as Holy and Arcane it may be that Divine Damage is a mix of the two like Shadowfrost or Frostfire damage.

As for the spell itself it's certainly interesting. All of the level 90 Priest Talents are now AoE Heal/Damage and Divine Star seems to be the middle of the road in getting good functionality. Halo is focused on the user and Cascade seems to work best when spread out but Divine Star seems to be about getting a good straight line of fire so it will probably be ideal in organized groups.

Looks like Shadow gets its own version of the spell, and it's Divine Star.

The "Divine" school of magic is Holy + Arcane. If the target is immune or resistant to one of those, the other one will be applied; whichever does more damage.

Similarly for shadowpriests, "Spellshadow" is Shadow + Arcane, and works around the prohibition of casting holy magic while in shadowform.

Blizzard started doing these combos way way back, including for NPCs (e.g., lots of monsters in the original Naxx40 would do Plague damage (Nature + Shadow), specifically for players who were trying to gimp the fights by wearing lots of resistance gear). The entire list of combinations of schools of magic is here, for those of you who haven't spent the last few years staring at combat logs. :-)

"Returns to you" means that it then travels to you, or that it returns to the destination where it was cast?

UPDATED! (The original post took me too long to do and wasn't satisfying because I simply used 15'000 spell power, so I thought I'd do it this time with some graphs.. I won't post them as a picture in here but I'll give you the links to fooplot.com.. :)

For those who don't know exactly how to read a graph: There are 2 axes:
horizontal: The x-axis which represents the amount of spell power
vertical: The y-axis which represents the amount of healing/damage done per "x" spell power given

So in the following example you would do 20'000 healing/damage with 10'000 spell power (or 10'000 healing/damage with 5'000 spell power).

The question for me was, which one of the three lvl90-Talents to use as a Disc-Priest in PvP. My Problem as Disc is mostly the lack of Mana during a battle and of course, doing damage and healing enough as well. So my factors are:

Mana
Healing
Damage
Cooldown

Note: The following graphs are colored. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to describe them directly on fooplot (please let me know if there's a way)

Red: Divine Star - Damage
Purple: Divine Star - Healing
Blue: Halo - Damage
Light blue: Halo - Healing
Green: Cascade - Damage & Healing

Here's a little overview of the three different spells:

Now let's put them down on the same level again. The mana first:

Now a few other aspects:
Divine Star: Useful in arena to detect stealth enemies, like rogues or druids. You can do it either at the beginning of the fight or when they use vanish or shadowmeld. Also, the spell is "casted twice" which means you have doubled luck chance of gaining a procc. You get a lot of heal during a "Zerg" or in a 10/25 raid whilst the group is on one spot or in a line. But in dungeons you have to take care so you don't pull unnecessary adds. The spell is casted in the direction you're looking, so you're quick enough to just spin with your mouse. And of course: it does the most DPS / HPS

Cascade: This is great for healing a dungeon, because you will heal up to 15 targets at once, almost independent where the members are standing. You won't pull any adds because the spell doesn't heal and damage at the same time. But using this on an enemy can pull the whole room because it bounces to "idle" NPCs. Of course, it can be a disadvantage in PvP, because it doesn't hit a target more than once, and wont heal or do damage at the same time.

Halo: Unfortunately they've nerfed this spell so you're no longer able to hit stealthed enemies. The advantage here is the fact that you can use it for bursting down your enemy, or save your ass in trouble (but remember: it won't heal you for the highest amount, because it reaches it's best effect at 25 yards. And you have to position yourself good, to get the best out of this spell). Using this spell in a Dungeonroom full of trash is a suicide commando!
Halo could do alot more/less when I would've calculated with the minimum and maximum of healing/damage instead of taking the average amount. If I have some free time I'm gonna add some graphics (even though I'm "scared" the graphics get flooded)

After these few graphs and personal opinions we can all see, that Divine Star became a major buff with patch 5.2, because I didn't calculate the "fact" (or 90% chance - whatever you want to call it) that Divine Star hits the target twice!

If it helps any, It's easier to see your allies if you turn on "show friendly name plates" ("Shift V" if you hadn't switch it on your keybindings) and position yourself in a path to get the most healing out of this talent.

Divine Star now deals 40% more damage and 133% more healing, and its radius has been reduced by 33%.

(Note: All the following calculations are based on 15500 sp)
so, if we use damage/cd to calculate the damage per time (dps/hps):

Divine Star 16,814/15=1,120.9; 1,120.9*1.4=1,569.3(Damage) 1,120.9*2.33=2,611.7(Heal)
Cascade 25,220.5/25=1,008.8
Halo 50,375/40=1,259.4(Damage) 84,099/40=2,102.5(Heal)

if we use mana/cd to calculate the mana per time (mps):

Divine Star 4.5/15=0.3
Cascade 9.0/25=0.36
Halo 13.5/40=0.3375

if we use damage/mana to calculate the mana efficiency (dpm/hpm):

Divine Star 16,814/4.5=3,736.4; 3,736.4*1.4=5,231.0(Damage) 3,736.4*2.33=8,705.8(Heal)
Cascade 25,220.5/9.0=2,802.3
Halo 50,375/13.5=3,731.5(Damage) 84,099/13.5=6,229.6(Heal)

also we should notice, especially for dpsers, more cast cost more GCD, if consider this, Halo is easy winner on dps.
the thing really matter is, for Divine Star, it's the hardest to get the best effect. and Cascade is the easiest one to get the best effect.
so, if counting to IDEAL situation, Divine Star is actually the winner, Cascade is the looser.

@Niveaulos (thx for discussing), ~~lyom~~ ~~(shame you for dirty words)~~:
all the numbers are correct, but the way is wrong. damage/cd is the result for damage per time (dps/hps). mana/cd is the result for mana per time (mps), but if what we want is mana efficiency (dpm/hpm), is just damage/mana. the result of Niveaulos is actually dps/mana, we can clearly see what is wrong. the "mana" is the mana of a single cast, but the fact is, shorter cd spell cast more times than longer cd spell. so, we should replace the "mana" with "mana/cd". so, the math turn to be (damage/cd)/(mana/cd), ok, that's just damage/mana. so, the advantage of the short cd spells (Divine Star) the result shown is not true.

Just swapped to this spell on my talent tree.

Amazing spell in PvP zergs in AV and Isle of Conquest. Screen just lights up with green numbers.

Does this heal the casting priest? If so, does it heal only when it returns, or also on its way to the target?

Edit: To answer my own question, it does heal the casting priest both on its way away from and back to the priest.
