I found a lot of these in the fields of The Heartland in Valley of the Four Winds. Each mound contains either:

After a quick pass over the Heartland, I found 21 mounds of dark soil and discovered 5 apples, 5 ruby shards, 5 marsh lily, 4 blue feathers, and 2 Jade cats.

I found a Dark Soil in Townlong Steppes yesterday on the Beta - it gave a gift as well (sorry, cannot remember which one).

Edit: Just found another one in Shan'ze Dao . It contained a Marsh Lily. So it seems that the Dark Soils are not restricted to Valley of the Four Winds, at least not in the Beta.

The one at 53, 48 (Halfhill) appears only if you are on Learn and Grow V: Halfhill Market And always awards Marsh Lily.

These contain 1 of 5 "gifts" they are:
-Jade Cat
-Ruby Shard
-Lovely Apple
- Marsh Lily
- Blue Feather

they are used to give Tillers rep and rep to the individual people, however each has a favourite that gives more.
for 900 the favourite gifts are:
Jade cat- Ella or Fish Fellreed
Ruby Shard- Haohan Mudclaw or Tina Mudclaw
Lovely Apple- Jogu the Drunk or Sho
Marsh Lily- Gina Mudclaw or Farmer Fung
Blue Feather- Old Hillpaw or Chee Chee

giving non favourite gifts to the npcs will give 540 rep

Also humans 10% extra rep applies, as well as guild perks of 5% or 10%

Cannot be looted once best friends with everyone

Just a note here, you cannot interact with Dark Soil until you are level 90. You can only do the beginning quest for it where the mound is located underneath the farm's hut.

Most mounds seem to be in the area of The Four Winds called The Heartland. It is possible to find Dark Soil deposits in other zones in Pandaria, but they are few and far between. If you are after farming, The Heartland is the place to be.

Once you have all 10 at best friend status, the Dark Soil stops being lootable.

Found a patch of this dirt while doing the Pomfruit Pickup Daily, it was beside a tree in Southwest Vale of Eternal Blossoms. It contained a Lovely Apple.

They don't sparkle, and can appear under bridges and the like so if you're farming these be sure to keep a sharp eye out.

Additionally, it seems you can only carry up to five of these at a time--I had four cats and an apple in my inventory, and couldn't loot a mound I found. Also, you can find these items sometimes when you harvest your crops.

There is no limit to how many objects you can carry. If you can't interact with a dark soil pile, re-log, you'll be able to use it. It's just buggy like everything else right now.

Hint: if you're farming them, turn your ground clutter density to low. You'll be able to spot them amongst the leafy veggie patches a lot easier.

Found one on the Windward Isle, surrounded by tigers. Contained a Marsh Lily. It's appearing as if they can spawn outside of Valley of the Four Winds, contrary to what the Wowhead data currently suggests.

When you're tired of all the competition in Valley of Four Winds I suggest visiting Temple of White Tiger in Kun-Lai Summit.
There are quite a few dark soils (found 23 spawns so far, but I'm sure there is more) and pretty much no competition :)
Look for them on ground, usually near trees, but not only :) You won't find them in rooms, so don't waste your time there.

Farm these after a server restart, not too many people around and the restart seem to reset the spawn of these objects.

got 50 of them in 10 min after a server restart, one darksoil every few meters, didn't even need to mount up again.

Seems these can be found outside the currently marked area, perhaps even found everywhere on Pandaria, i just ran into one at 55, 60 Jade Forest.

Does anyone else have deja vu of Blood of Heroes?

Hopefully Dark Soil isn't quite as rare as those used to be. (Though if you do find one, at least it doesn't spawn 2-3 level 60 elites to decimate you!)

1. These things are apparently capable of spawning all over the Pandarian continent, even though Wowhead hasn't registered that at this time.

2. They may have some sort of "swarming" spawn behavior. One morning I was finding bunches in the Heartland. Normally, you can find one or two if you're lucky. I see other comments much the same; one person says there's a bunch near X, another person can't find any there.

If you find a place they're spawning hot and heavy, perhaps throw out a kind word on General channel and let your fellow farmers... well, farm with you. :)

Do you need a special implement to dig with? Or have to be a level 80? I can see the mounds, but they are just background, I can' t interact with them... (am currently at level 88)

I was able to find a total of 2x Marsh Lily, 1x Ruby Shard, 1x Lovely Apple and 1x Blue Feather at the Temple of the White Tiger in Kun'Lai Summit. The first mound I found was right next to the flight master.

Edit: On my second trip to the Temple I found 1x Marsh Lily, 2x Ruby Shard, 1x Lovely Apple and 1x Jade Cat.

I seem to only be able to find 5 at a time and it's not easy. They spawn near the bottoms of trees and blend in with the roots. I usually just follow the paths and go around the back of the temple. I haven't been able to find any on the side of the mountains or near any of the small ponds but as I said, I just follow the paths.

Here's a list of Coordinates for the ones I've found in the Vale of Eternal Blossums. I can usually get between 7-8 gifts per day just flying around this 1 zone, the yellow dirt/leaves texture really make the dirt pop as opposed to the Dreadwastes, Toalong, V4W and Jade forest points. I will update the list as I find new points.

I found a mound today while doing some dailies for The Order of the Cloud Serpent, seems like they might spawn on Windward Isle in eastern Jade Forest as well.

I've noticed a large percent of these are located around where you will be doing various dailies. Keep an eye out when doing your dailies, because it seems most people don't notice them if they are questing. I've found these during the locations for the Tillers, Order of Cloud Serpent, Golden Lotus, and Klaxxi dailies.

Hint: If you have friends in other realms (low population is preferred), you can make use of the new update. When you group up with your friend, you will get tranferred to their realm (at least i did) and have acces to the dark soil containers there!

I farmed in The Heartland during primetime for about 15 minutes and found 6 items.

Turn ground clutter to low and just fly around. Look for dark piles of dirt on the ground. They can appear anywhere: in the crops, by the houses, on the road, etc.

The spawn rate for Dark Soil seems to have been drastically reduced. Where I was finding them every couple of minutes, I'm now seeing one every couple of hours.

I've noticed most players fly fairly low when looking for these. I prefer instead to fly at a higher altitude, a little bit higher than the white birds in the area. I find that I can adjust my camera looking down, and see the dirt mounds quite easily. Many times, the vegetation that kind of clutters and covers the mounds at a lower height, disappears up high. You can also get a larger area to view at one time. I'm uploading a screenshot to show what I'm talking about.

Similar to what I did for Lorewalkers and Onyx Eggs, I am working on a similar functioning addon for these Dark Soil spawns. The project is already on Curse, I'm just writing the actual code to load the waypoints into TomTom and also formatting the coordinates themselves to function properly.

Feel free to keep an eye on the Curse page, I hope to have a release with the next 12 to 24 hours.

Items obtained from mounds of dark soil also have a chance to drop when harvesting crops.

When jogue predicted melons, the (melon) harvest the following day yielded a jade cat and a ruby shard. I am told, however, that these items can drop regardless of wether or not the crop was predicted, but i don't know wether or not the crop being predicted improves your chances.

I like to farm them in the two caves in Jade Forest where you have dailies to kill the spiders and hozen for the Cloud Serpent rep . On days when those dailies aren't available I usually find 2 soils in each cave, sometimes 3.

Haven't seen this question asked or answered, so I'll put it here just in case. Does anyone know whether these despawn if you open one but don't loot it? Like, said I didn't need apples anymore, having Sho and Jogu at Exalted. If I open one and it has an apple, is it better to just take it and toss it since it'll despawn anyway, or if I leave it, will someone else be able to come along behind me and pick it up?

The fastest way I found to farm these:

Set ground clutter to low and view distance to fair. Fly over the Heartland in Valley of the Four Winds, maintaining an altitude a few meters above the patrolling birds. At this height most ground clutter objects disappear completely, but the visual range of the dark soil mounds is farther. So not only do you avoid aggroing the birds, the mounds stand out very clearly. Almost all of the spawn points are in, around or between the farmed plots, so don't waste time looking in other areas nearby.

Be sure to pay attention to which gift each NPC prefers to get the most rep for each one. This extra note for superstitious people: I seemed to find fewer mounds when I had a lot of gifts in my bags, and the rate of finds seemed to increase for a while after I turned them all in. I'm not superstitious so I put no credit in such things, but I mention it anyway for the benefit of those who do.

I went from acquaintance, buddy or friend to best friend with 7 of the 10 NPCs in one day this way.

Why has nobody yet mentioned how to be able to loot these?
I quote what I found out with Google:

"You need to have done the first few quests with the Tillers. This took me hours to figure out. If your character can't pick them up then it is because you haven't completed the first few quests. Once you complete up to the quest where you loot the dark soil under the house, you are then able to loot the dark soil!"

My 2 minor tips for you farming the dark soils when there's competition:

a) Check the virmen hole (not inside but outside) that's between south and southeast from the crane statue circle near the lake where Ella is, it's at the direction where the crane statue's chest points. Check my screenshot so you see better what I mean :D Anyway, there's a non-visible dark soil spawning spot. I happened to see it by accident when my mouse moved over it telling there's a dark soil somewhere. If there are plenty of people gathering the soils, i'm pretty sure this is one they miss. I've found 5 from this spot after discovering it.

b) Check the Cradle of Chi-Ji in Krasarang Wilds. Whenever I go there, I find 3-5 dark soils, another place I guess people don't bother checking, or don't know about. At least check the lines where plants turn to sand, next to the rightmost hut at the camp, around all the round buildings and their stairs etc. After checking them I just fly inside the mini jungle that the island is, for sometimes the dark soild just are there next to big trees or middle of kinda nothing...

A number of these items can be found at the Cradle of Chi'ji in the wilds. Watch out for hostile level 90 mobs.

Upon further investigation, I found some at the Temple of Niuzao in Townlong Steppes.

This means they spawn at all four temples.

In addition, they seem to pop up where there are dailies.

If I'm not mistaking, since patch 5.1 the spawn rate for these has increased. I also suspect that Dark Soil spawns independently for each player.

If you're currently farming Cloud Serpent rep, keep an eye out for these! I've found countless on Windward Isle and all of the quest hubs, such as the hozen and spider caves, etc.

Alright, I just farmed several soil piles in about 20 minutes and I have a few things I learned which should ease your search:

As stated previously, set your ground clutter density to low, it will help you spot the dark soil.
A flying mount is a must, the faster the better.
The soil spots only spawn on dirt. They will never spawn on a paved path, however they will spawn on dirt paths, in snow, and anywhere else where the terrain is "natural."
Look everywhere... behind houses, next to gongs, under trees. The soil does not have to spawn next to a structure
Do your farming off peak hours... early in the morning or late at night are the best times because you only have to compete with serious farmers

Now what I did --

I started my search in the Heartland (Vot4W) and had some success, but I was competing with the miners and herb gatherers who were also farming the mineral and herb rich area where the dark soil spawns. Frustrated I moved to the Temple of the White Tiger and found quite a few spawns really quickly, then they all seemed to be gone. Feeling like I wasn't going to benefit from farming there anymore, I moved on to the (relatively nearby...if you fly fast) Temple of the Jade Serpent (in the Jade Forest). This was a great move because the spawns here are much easier to farm. They spawn in a semi-circle around the INNER edge of the wall surrounding the temple, and straight up from south to north in front of the temple. I was able to complete this circuit several times and get some soil with each pass. Eventually, I wasn't seeing the spawns like I started with so I decided to go check the Temple of the White Tiger again. The soil was back, not all in the same spots as the first time but it was there. I repeated this process several times, going back and forth between the two temples, farming them until the spawn rate seemed to diminish then moving to the other temple.

My reccomended strategy:

Start at the Temple of the White Tiger, making a few passes until you aren't finding any soil.
Travel to the Temple of the Jade Serpent and made a few passes until you aren't finding any soil.
Head back to the Temple of the White Tiger and repeat.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the best part... There are no hostile mobs at either location.

Very, very difficult to see when the weather is cloudy in VotFW. Your best bet is to wait until it's sunny before attempting to farm for these.

I Hit up the Tiger Temple like suggested and found 3 right off the bat. If you repeat this every hour hour 1/2 you will have plenty in know time. Sometimes i get 2,3,or 4 Dark soil.Depending on if the the celestial daily is in that zone. Tonight i'v collected about 14 in a few hours. Cause i also make a path through the Vale n Grab some before i hit that spot.

Got into world server right after restart today, was only a total of 19 peeps horde-side... literally just came up. I was able to loot 29 of these in 10 min in VotFW since there was no competition. Appears to work on the same mechanic as some of the rare spawn pets were there'll be tons right after a restart, then spawn rate tapers off quickly.

I just found 3 apples, 3 ruby shards, and 1 jade cat in the span of about 10-15 minutes of flying flow and looking around in the heartlands.

Make sure whenever possible to give the contents to the right NPC. It will cut your Rep farming in half:

Hi guys Surprised no one has mentioned Temple of the jade serpent , I do a circuit inside the grounds that nets me up to 7 dark soil and re spawns every 1-2 hours co ords for my circuit are

57.9- 62.5 or 57.2- 62.3...............55.7-51.5 or 55.7-50.7..............54.2- 61.2 or 54.6-60.0

looks a lot ! but its a simple circuit and you will soon see that one of two spots close together will spawn at about 7 places around the temple sometimes you do get both spawn together or even 3 fairly close ones ! but it still totals about 7 altogether and then re spawns within 2 hours.Together with 3-7 at temple of white tiger and the random quests that pop up with the tillers members (think yellow Q for the individual rep blue Q for overall tillers rep and individual rep) you can get each one to best friends very fast . Im on my fifth toon to have farm fully opened up from doing just 3 circuits a day ( log in do both temples and quests ,go off and play ,go back couple of hours later and do temples again, go play , then once more before you log for the night) PS DONT try when Celestials daily is based there....no spawns will be found on these days. Hope this helps you fellow farmers cyawl :)

Once you are Best Friends with all of the Tillers, you will no longer be able to interact with Dark Soil.
Additionally, towards the end of your grind, you may find that there is a lower drop chance for treasures that are favourites of Tillers you are already Best Friends with.

Been farming these in Valley of the Four Winds and noticed a few things.

1. Don't ignore the field hand NPC's. Often you will find them "tilling" Dark Soil!

2. Its easier to see them from up high but....they often spawn close together so you should keep a medium height from the ground. Those flocks of white birds won't attack you!

3. Lovely Apple and Jade Cat seem to have lower drop rates. This may be just my server though.

4. Look really closely at the ground when in doubt. Sometimes these spawn in a colored area and sort of blend in with the map. Again...observe the field hands.

5. Bugs love to swarm around Dark Soil! So be on the lookout.

When best friends with all of The Tillers, the Dark Soil becomes unlootable, nor does any of existing items have any purpose except filling up your bag.

If you're rushing reputation with all of the Tillers, I suggest you take give each item to their corresponding NPC. When you become best friends with the ones that use for an example Jade Cat , I suggest you should save them and keep looting them and then make an Excel file or something similar and put each of the remainder corresponding items to the right NPC's and the rest of the items, this time Jade Cat , will be used as a filler. If you are doing thise right, you will end up saving time by less Dark Soil farming.

This is purely anecdotal, and could very well be due to a confluence of other favorable conditions, but I suspect that the spawn rate and amount of dark soil up in VotW is greater when it's raining. Here's how I did over just 7 minutes during rain:

You don't have to look anywhere else for these anymore; now that most people are long done with these, you can stick to the Heartlands. My personal best was 21 in one go.

From my experience with farming these (about 100 of them), my gut tells me that there are about 5 up when nobody is farming them, and they have a 5-10 minute re-spawn time.

So good workflow would be to:

Fly around the Heartland looking for Dark Soil
Go to Sunsong Ranch to do your farming for the day, pick up Halfhill Quests
Fly around the Heartland looking for Dark Soil
Do Halfhill dailies
Fly around the Heartland looking for Dark Soil
Turn in Halfhill dailies
Turn in Dark Soil Rewards and Tiller's Food dailes

Turning 'ground clutter' to low, 'texture resolution' to low and 'view distance' to ultra(not sure if this affects it at all) I found 6 x Blue Feather, 1 x Ruby Shard, 3 x Marsh Lily, 5 x [Lovely Apple and 3 x Jade Cat in about 20 minutes flying close to the ground in The Heartland.

Grab your flying mount, go to first person view, fly around using wasd(x and space for altitude), look around with leftmouse and correct flightpath with right if need be. Easiest way to spot these i found.

If you don't spot anything, someone has already beat you.
At least once an hour it should be re-spawn.

These actually aren't that hard to find, if you go into the Heartland at least.
Simply fly close to the ground, look for a pile of brown in one of the many colored fields...

As an aside: I found The Heartland has a lot of dark soil spawns. At a quiet time I was able to find dark soil again and again, including respawns. I am not sure how many spawns there can be at the same time, but I assume it's limited and either the respawn time is fairly short or there is a forced respawn whenever the number of spawns is below a certain amount. Of course it's a pretty sizable area, so don't forget to check places like the farmland near Ella.

Im on a full-pop server so there were a few players farming these. I found one and then realm hopped and there it was. So I looted and realm hopped again and there it was. I got two rubies and a lily. Just keep realm hopping until you no longer get one in that spawn, then move on to another.

Realm hop has made getting almost impossible things possible again.

As of patch 7.1, I believe the spawn rate on dark soil has been significantly increased since MOP. I looted about 50 dark soil in The Heartland (Valley of the Four Winds, west of Halfhill) in less than 30 minutes, almost instantly becoming best friends with the entire market. If you keep running around, the dark soil seems to re-spawn fairly quickly up to a certain point in time. You'll find dark soil scattered everywhere in fields of crops and rabbit NPC's.

This was on a fairly dead server though with no competition.

With the recent changes to zone levels, you can go to Pandaria at Level 80, and complete the Tillers Quests, including all the "growing the farm" series of quests straight away.

However you cannot interact with Dark Soil until you reach Level 85.

There is a lot that I didn't get done in MoP that I find myself interested in finishing now, some for transmogs, some for achievements and some for just the satisfaction of getting it done finally. This came up on the radar.

If you are doing this long after the fact then I wouldn't bother with the low resolution tricks or any of that, the absolute easiest way to get these is to just plug the waypoints into TomTom and do it that way.

I spent a couple hours hovering over what the comments made sound like were the only places to find this (Homestead - which is about 50% of that zone, Temple of the White Tiger - I have found two ever and Temple of the Jade Serpent - never found any) and when I decided to just do a circuit with the waypoints I was getting the left and right. I was trying to level up on farmer and it was taking forever but after about 30 minutes of running just two circuits of waypoints I got him all the way up and had enough left over to get another farmer maxxed out too.

I recommend checking Krasarang Wilds around 20,60. Now that I've finished collecting all my soils it pains me every time I fly over this peninsula and see like 10 grouped together. Very lucrative spot. I can literally see 9 right now from where I'm standing.

Edit: There are a lot north of the sandy area at the edge of the woods there as well.

Pro tip for y'all farming this around many others: In your graphics settings, turn your view distance to max, and your environmental detail and ground clutter down to the minimum. You can see the Dark Soil from quite high up, which eliminates vision of all plants and NPCs on the ground and allows you to scout out the mounds much faster.

There's no point trying to constantly farm these in Heartlands - they're not on a forced respawn. You'll get about 20-25 items in about 5 minutes, and then you may as well go do something else for half an hour, or you'll just be flying around waiting for respawns.

To assist you all with Dark Soil farming I made an AddOn which I put up at Curse.

It has almost all the Dark Soil locations. I threw in some other stuff too such as the NPC home locations and the gifts that they prefer as well as a brief guide to questing to help you get started.

The Krasarang Wilds island is good for four to six each visit if you happen to be in the area. Come back in an hour. Likewise The Jade Forest. Both benefit from clearly defined spawn areas. The Jade Forest also has two secret caves two!

Visibility of Kun-Lai Summit soil is affected by quest phasing. You must have completed A Witness to History/A Witness to History in order to see the Dark Soil. The prerequsites are A Celestial Experience/A Celestial Experience. Both quests are available in the Temple of the White Tiger and the Dark Soil will subsequently appear in the Temple grounds. Four per visit, come back in an hour. Kun-Lai is easy - getting your four will be quick due to the high colour contrast of white snow versus dark brown soil - you don't need my AddOn for that!

Dread Wastes is the worst for farming by far. Sparse, spread out and visibility has been deliberately made difficult in some locations but it has the advantage that by this stage noone is farming them and there appears to be a very high upper limit - at least ten per farming run.

Sra'vess, Niuzao Temple and Shan'ze Dao islands in Townlong Steppes each have several available per spawn set. My AddOn says what the upper limit is for each island. Mainland Townlong Steppes is not so good. Overall it's a great place to incidentally farm if you happen to be in the area.

But for fast farming stick to Valley of the Four Winds and as a backup Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Blizzard ramps up the respawns too in VotFW if there's several of you farming!

I'm just doing the Operation Shieldwall dailies down in Krasarang Wilds and there's a ton of Dark Soil Mounds in Bilgewater Beach - mainly around the trees at 22.9 50.9

If you are searching in The Heartland, the absolute best place to (currently) find these dark soil mounds is IN the crops themselves.
