Very fun fight over all.

I would strongly recommend everyone picking up Polyformic Acid Potion from the table in front of Professor Slate just before the room with Gandling.
He doesn't melee. Instead he chain casts Incinerate and occasionally Immolate.
Periodically, he's cast Rise! and summon ALOT of ghouls. Just aoe them down and keep them off the healer.
He will also cast Harsh Lesson on a random target periodically. He can cast this on anyone, tank and healer included. If he casts it on the tank, it will cause a threat wipe as well. DPS and tanks can simply AoE down the mobs in the rooms without much trouble. Healers should group up as many adds near the living subjects as they can and then dispel the living subject to AoE the adds down with Explosive Pain. If he sends the tank away, the healer needs to be ready to heal whoever has threat on Gandling till the tank gets back and taunts.

For those of you doing this on challenge mode there's one additional wrinkle: the Failed Students summoned by Rise! explode after 8 seconds, doing heavy (200k+) damage to anyone close by. The damage from the adds dying one after the other is easily enough to take out your tank and any melee dps. The easiest way to deal with this is to have your healer (and any ranged DPS) stand on the ledge right above Gandling, directly opposite from where you enter his room (note that standing there will aggro the boss, so send your tank in first). The ghouls will aggro to the healer from healing aggro, and the mobs will die before they can go up the stairs and all the way around, even without slows. At the same time it is very important that the tank and melee do not AoE but single target the boss, so that the ghouls don't explode in the melee. If the healer gets ported, any range DPS should AoE the ghouls to make sure they aggro to the ranged and not anyone else.

~~Finally we noticed he always ports people in a certain order: first the tank, then the healer, then the DPS.~~ This isn't true anymore- the tank still always gets ported first but the next four seem completely random. Gandling doesn't hit too hard so it's not too big a deal when the tank gets ported, but when the healer does obviously it's a great time for tank CDs, pots, healthstones, offhealing, etc. Everyone will get ported once and he never repeats targets.

Any one know if the gear hes using is able to be gotten in game? I'm guessing no, but if theres hope that would help! :D

It is also notable that Kick and High Priestess Azil are also wearing the set, besides the helm.

It appears (on normal, at least) that he will not port you if you aren't in a group, which means he also won't summon ghouls. He doesn't hit very hard at all, so he is very easy to solo. It's just a matter of getting to him...
