Normal Mode
He does a lot of damage, but he dies pretty quick. Hardest thing is when he does Disorienting Smash on the tank. The tank drops drops aggro for a few seconds. DPS, make sure you are ready to pop survival cooldowns in case you're number 2 on aggro.

He also summons adds that always go after the healer. Tank needs to be sure to get them off the healer.

This boss not really that nice to healers. The spikes i do believe is avoidable, but the adds exploding on death, doesn't seem to have a natural way of avoiding. I tried to keep them as much as possible on me(tank), and then killed them with help of rangers. But as i said, not kind to healers.

The best way to succeed in this encounter is to consider it as a 2 boss fight.

1. The boss itself
The tank can and should stay focused on the boss, relatively standard spank & tank as far as the 2nd part of the strat is applied reasonably well.

There is only 1 thing to be careful about. When the boss does a Disorienting Smash on the tank, the 2nd on aggro list will get aggro from the boss. Using a survival CD is of good and sound advice at that moment as the tank will lose aggro for a few seconds.

2. The adds
Without the adds, the fight would be very simple, however, they have to be dealt with.

There are 2 major problems with the adds:
- as they spawn, they produce a spike that does pretty bad damage (80-100k on mail arnour in hero mode) to the target
- they spawn rather quickly and attack their target for an amount of damage to be taken into account, and they explode at their death, causing even greater damage.

It is a fight that requires a strong healer with a capability to heal important amounts on a long fight.

How to deal with it?
1. Name a dps in charge of the adds. Preferably, a distance dps who can either keep them away (such as frost/arcane mage, hunter, warlock with tank pet) or a melee dps who can taunt with decent self heal capability (dk or paladin, perhaps a chaman could do).

That dps must focus only the adds as they will spawn fairly often. They must be dps'ed before they are too many. I estimated that a constant 15-17k dps on normal or 18-20k dps on hero is enough to get rid of one in time to fight the next spawn.

A distance dps is probably preferred as the add explode for important damage upon their death.

The 2 other dps will focus the boss. The faster the boss goes down, the less adds your healer will have to compensate for.

2. Make sure that everyone is able to move (quickly) when the adds spawn on them. The spawn location is clearly visible on the floor with a round whitish disk under the targetted character. Move out of the disk to avoid taking the damage of the spike.

Mobility is very important on this fight. The healer also will be targetted.

For having tested it very successfuly with a BM hunter and a tank pet, I believe it is a very good option. Make sure your pet taunts the adds and overuse the misdirection with glyph (no CD).

Warlock with a voidwalker should be able to do it fairly easily as well. Mages should be able to slow down the add and dps it before it reaches melee range.

The adds stay up for 30 seconds. Do they explode when that 30 secs is up, or only when killed?

I'm wondering about the correct strategy for dealing with the adds. Is the encounter designed so that it's a good idea to just ignore them?

His voice actor is Liam O'Brien. Cain Highwind in the DS remake of Final Fantasy 4, Gaara from Naruto, and more famous roles.

For WoW, you may recognize the Sha of Violence's voice as Illidan Stormrage himself.

So, after four wipes... this guy all of a sudden hits like a truck. Still hitting me for 140k+ with defensive CD's in use on Prot Pally.

I think something broke in the hotfix they didn't want to fess up to. I took 3,619,906 damage in one wipe that happened at 12%. The healer was pushing 32k HpS and the hunter had the adds under control.

Lore information on the Sha for those of you who haven't been reading the quests :)

The Sha originated from the death of an Old God, Y'Shaarj (who is confirmed to be very very dead). In his dying breath he cursed Pandaria with this strange energy - but a pale shadow of his true self, the source of the Sha, and it lay dormant for thousands of years.
There are only six known 'main' sha, though there were seven heads of Y'Shaarj, and similarly the tale is known as the Seven Burdens of Shaohao. This may mean that there is another Sha somewhere.
This is not widely known knowledge, though the Klaxxi have shown they are aware of it.

When Shaohao, the Last Emperor of Pandaria, fought his own fears and doubts and bested each Sha (a temple situated at the sight of each battle) and buried the Sha beneath Pandaria, they began feeding off every harsh word, doubtful thought, hateful expression, waiting. This is why some Sha have greater control in different regions of Pandaria. The August Celestials knew the Sha would eventually be released, and that is why they train their monks in a certain style to deal with the specific Sha buried under their temple.

Sha of Anger - Defeated and buried at the sight of the Temple of the White Tiger located in Kun Lai.

Sha of Despair - Defeated and buried at the sight of Temple of the Red Crane located in the Krasarang Wilds.

Sha of Doubt - Defeated and buried at the Temple of the Jade Serpent located in the Jade Forest.

Sha of Fear - Defeated and buried at the current sight of the Niuzao Temple located in the Townlong Steppes. This Sha also has corrupted the majority of the Mantid, including Grand Empress Shek'zeer.

Sha of Hatred - Defeated and buried at the sight of the Temple of the White Tiger located in Kun Lai.

Sha of Violence - Defeated and buried at the sight of the Temple of the White Tiger located in Kun Lai. At some point he is imprisoned by the Shado-Pan, he is eventually freed from his cage and defeated.

For the tanks: you can make this fight a lot easier with a small amount of effort. Everytime a little add spawns, taunt it to yourself and kill it. You should be able to handle soloing it before the next one spawns, though often a ranged dps may help. If you do this, the add will explode and the only person it will hit is you (Sha is pretty big and the explosion radius is small, so it won't reach melee).

The explosion damage from the adds seems to in general be the biggest issue in terms of over-whelming healers in this fight, and by doing this you completely negate it. The other advantage is that this is something you can do without any assistance from the rest of your party; so even if your pug group is utterly inept, your dps can't out-dps you as a tank, and your healer seems to oom after 3 heals, this is something you can do completely on your own that should allow your group to kill it.

Brewmaster's Stagger makes them pretty much immune to the disorienting effect of Disorienting Smash, which is nice.

This guy has a pretty awesome ability. If you are afflicted with smoke blades, afterward, you get Parting Smoke, which gives your next attack 100% crit, for 100% more damage.
