This looks awesome, espcialy since that whole bs with curse client no longer being fully free
As a mac user with far too many addons for my own good...I used Wowmatrix because it worked well, and I had heard Curse's client did not. When Wowmatrix was blocked, I tried out Curse's client....: (I'm very happy to hear about this new, mac-friendly app.Staying tuned...
I just say NO to all auto updaters.Had curse drop some buggy beta that ate my install directly. Had to delete addons and WTF and start from scratch. Had wowmatrix kill my guild's group calendar by dropping beta software on other players. The best was when wow matrix ate group cal. One guildie did it, we fixed it, explained why guild integration mods are only updated at guild request... only to have 3 or 4 more people who hadn't been on for a few days let wow matrix auto-update the same beta and eat the group cal again and again and again!
My rant:1. I am excited about Minion. An alternative to curse is always welcomed by me. The fact that curse charges to use their non-gimped version of their manager says a lot about them. That and their blatant ripoff of wowhead (wowdb?).2. I will agree with Kerafirewing in that WoW Matrix was a great tool. They actually seemed to give a crap what the community and their users thought. In fact, every complaint against them had been addressed over time. Addon authors complained about not having a way to get donations; I found plenty of addons that had a link to the download site AND the donation site. Authors complained about not getting credit for their work and said wowmatrix was passing the addons off as their own, yet I always found the author's name in the info tab. What I think is most ironic is how download sites complain about wowmatrix "making money" from ads, yet are going to do the same thing. Seriously, what do you all think the new Curse Client is doing? In fact they have a subscription version to suppress ads! Finally, the bandwidth issue is a non-issue. Consider that all of the users of wowmatrix will be using some other "sanctioned" client to download addons en masse. The previous bandwidth issues will still be there. The new clients won't magically create more bandwidth. Nothing will really be different once these things get released. This could have all been solved had Curse not been so greedy and the addon sites just worked with wowmatrix in the first place instead of restricting them. I am truly glad that this Minion will be released with the same spirit as wowmatrix: Let the users download a bunch of addons and get back to playing the game already.
wowhead is such a selloutedit: this is sarcasm
Well hope it replaces wowmatrix cuase that was awesome for keeping my addons updated and curse basically told me off for using it (wowmatrix) when I was forced to install that to update a few addons since wowmatrix got blocked.
Wow, this looks like it might be a fairly good advancement in the Addon management landscape. A single program, which people then write addons for, which can connect in their own way. It means that not only can there be one program for performing updates, but also that people can host their addons outside the big sites and still have auto-updating abilities (Deadly Boss Mods could create a module for their addon specifically, that updates the moment a new version is on their website, as opposed to having to wait till sites like Curse are updated, or waiting on users manually updating). It also comes at an interesting time, as I was recently considering a Wow-related project (that would never get off the ground because im lazy :D ) and as an addon to Minion it would be useful. Would Minion be supporting only Downloads, or might it maybe support Uploads as well (for example, the Wowhead Looter could run entirely through Minion)?
I think it looks great but we wont find out yet, but my questions are if,A - they will be using all addons availible, or just ones they come up withB - whether it matters if we have two cliants set up at onceC - If we can give them ideas for an addon that would be cool but nobody has made yet
what is the difference between wowmatrix and this? is it that wowmatrix doesn't have as many addons because authors refuse to give wowmatrix their addon? why would that be?can someone clarify this up? i haven't had any issues with not finding any addons that i want, but im happy to use this if it helps the authors more or something
The last addon manager I used was WoWAce's Mac client. It crashed sometimes but it did the job of finding my Ace-based addons and updating them as needed well enough. Then it went kaputzy and I didn't even bother seeing if Curse had a Mac client after my boyfriend tried the Curse client out and.. well.. he had terrible experiences with it.It would be convenient to have an addon manager again, so I'll try this one out. Can't actually give true feedback until I use it for a while, yes?
i wouldnt mind trying this program...i used to once use wowmatrix but its been closed out of different places so my mods doesnt update..but ive tried curse client...its screwd up my mods...and paying to get services for mods wich is free...
I was awfully suspicious of the Curse client when it was first released as beta. Then after a few releases, it seemed to be ok. The latest Curse client doesnt seem to be too bad, just very slow, but thats probably the speed throttling happening. So I decided to only do updates once a week, unless I got an email from Curse (which rarely happens in a timely fashion) to let me know one of my favourites has been updated. Then for some strange reason, Curse gifted me with a free premium membership for the Curse client.I'll probably end up using Minion for a couple of addons hosted at WOWUI (Aloft comes to mind), and keep using the Curse Client for everything else unless Curse add a module to Minion and my free premium membership is revoked.Maybe WoWMatrix will write a module for the Minion and continue to deep link to unofficial sites for their content.
Curse Client. Love it.
With the realization of what wowmatrix was doing i was disheartened to know i was helping this problem. But it was so easy to use it was hard to let go of. Like many i just don't want to dl, unzip, click drag ect. my addons and matrix made it convenient. This is exactly what i was hoping for. Either curse or wowui to see how well something like matrix worked, and offer it in a way that didn't disrespect the authors, or benefit unduly off of other sites. Thank you for seeing a better way to do things and making it work the way it is supposed to. I'm sure a lot of users of wow matrix weren't aware of what actually was going on :D can't wait to donate ^^.
