Wonderful start-up guide for people who are completely new to tanking.
Very well written. Good way to help answer some questions players may have right from choosing one all the way up to basic and intermediate tactics.
Active Mitigation for Warriors is almost all of the time the Shield Block - not the Barrier. Also: Divine Shield as a Tank without a cancelaura-macro is most of the time a bad move. For beginners not recommended.All in all a nice starting-tanking-guide. GJ.

Been tanking now for 6 years. Had a lot of pitfalls along the way. This is a great guide that would have gone a LONG way back then. (Speaking as someone who tried to tank in PvP gear). ALL new tanks should read this.

DK is the easiest to start with, and the hardest to master on this list.It has four main resources(runes, runic power, blood tap, and plague leech) with #$%^ tons of active mitigation. It has the lowest passive mitigation out of all tank classes. It is the slowest tank. It requires heavy attention on your current health and current resolve %.Easy because blood boil and plagues provide #$%^ tons of aggro. Two taunts with two emergency aoes(death and decay, gorefiend grasp) helps you make sure that you have the attention of every single mob in sight.Hard because you will have to watch those four main resources, your active mitigation cooldowns, along with your health bar and resolve percent to actually be tanky. Healers will have to make up your mistakes, and for DK, mistakes are usually huge.edit: *five main resources, forgot scent of blood. not that important but helps.
Solid guide. The most common mistakes I see tanks making are running out of line of sight of their healer, moving too much, and incorrect facing for dodge and parry, so I'm glad to see that covered here.Monk and Death Knight are kind of unique in that you have to learn how/when to use resources for damage/aggro and how to use them for mitigation. For example, I see DKs spamming Blood Boil when they should be saving their Death Runes for Death Strike or their Blood Runes for Rune Tap. With the others, there's a clearer dichotomy between resource generators and mitigators.
awesome guide! i feel i understand a bit better why i suck at tanking so much now lol... the one class that sounds like i should play is the one class i've never touched (paladin)! more to the point tho...where's the guide like this for healing?
Great and very useful guide!Need for tanks was always there, but it seems now at the start of WoD it's even greater.Ofc it is important to mention all the useful mechanics of tanking, but there is one aspect that hinders most players to choose tanking role.Tank must not only master his class and be comfortable in tanking role, but most important tank must be very familiar with the instances mechanics. This means you must do some sort of reading before entering new for you instance.This attitude of TL;DR is absolutely not working if you want to success as a tank.I have to admit, that it's only recently that i started to read on basically everything that have to do with game mechanics (yes lol even my passive abilities) and as a result - it feels that i becoming a better player.Also one important ability to be a good tank - is to have awereness of your surrondings and posision of your group, because many casual tanks confused about what tank means and push forward, leaving they group behind or in direct danger. Tank is not the same as locomotive ;)

Great guide. The only thing I would suggest adding is...How to Position MobsMake sure you position the boss so melee don't have to stand in the bad stuff in order to melee.

Why isn't Survival Instincts mentioned in the Druid section? It is a baseline ability that you don't have to talent into, so I think it should be included.
"Caster mobs" and "hunter mobs"? Where does hydra spitting on people fit then? What about some pirate that throws daggers at us? I think "mobs with ranged attack" is better description than "hunter mobs".As for positioning, it should say "learn what skills mob you're tanking uses". Default tanking position is back to players, not only because breaths and such, but because 3% chance to evade attacks from front still exists (don;t remember if it;s dodge ir miss). Default tanking position for dragons is back to players due to tail sweeps. For mobs that have cleave that should be split among many players, tanking position is front to group. So most important thing about positioning is learning.Probably should also say "be aware of mobs entering fight", because they will run to your healer.Also, in WoD healers do run out of mana. Make you don't pull when your healer is running on fumes.There us much much more to tanking than, but I suppose this guide manages to scratch surface.
I main a Paladin tank (my guild achieved 3/7 in Highmaul last night) and my alts are a Prot warrior and a Guardian druid, and I have to say that this guide is accurate. If you're new to tanking, I would recommend that you start out on a Paladin because they, as the guide says, have a smooth damage intake and you can easily get yourself out of a pickle with abilities like Lay on Hands, which will heal you for your full health.
I've tanked with Druid, Death Knight, Paladin and Warrior since BC. Tanking isn't hard, the hard part is putting with with random idiots in the dungeon finder and LFR.
