What about Dorothy's dog from the wizard of Oz?There's an in game pet with a similar name and it can summon tornadoes!
Poxleitner's Leggings of Lights is a reference to the musician Lights.
I think Lady La-La's Singing Shell's sound is incorrect. I recall the sound being more like this one I could be wrong, but it'd make a lot more sense if it was that
I wish the items for youtubers were put here too like Greatbelt of the Crendor
Good work on these lists Perculia, things like this have been done before (not on this website) but I like seeing it in a detailed and smooth layout. It is unfortunate to see that people have not realized that you have stated your posts are very specific to being items (not sure if there was any complaints as such on this post, but I believe there was a few on the previous list.) Also I believe the reason why some items are not posted is because I believe you have said that the ones you have in these guides are proven by WoW developers. Which I am glad you look for proof; although in some cases items can be obvious what they are referencing, you can still wrong in some cases. The reason why is although an item could be similar to something, it could be a multitude of things: 1. It might be a reference to many things (i.e. have multiple meanings or as a joke could have many innuendos.) 2. The reference could be similar but mean something quite different take for example the quest: Aces High! This quest has an argument on the WoWhead page on whether or not this is a reference to the song by Iron Maiden or if it simply is quote jet pilots say. (I believe it falls under my #1 category of having multiple references.) Which is also why I am glad this is not covering everything in the game because due to a detailed list; there was a community project since Wraith that had over 16000 references. Lists on other sites though cannot say they have proof; but it is nice to see a guide that has taken the step to confirm these. I feel as if I am kinda going back and forth with this post now. So I hope everyone understands what I am all stating in my second paragraph; I believe my statement of things being able to have multiple meanings should be understood by the community to prevent fights over simple matters.
To be accurate/pedantic, the Ruby Slippers are a movie reference rather than a literature reference. They're not made of ruby in the book but from a white precious gem; it was changed in the movies to red to show off the Technicolor.
Nice guide, I would love to see the NPC references.
while Rowan's Rifle of Silver Bullets is a reference to Rowan of Rin, Rowan didn't have a gun, and he shepherded Bukshah not sheep :P
As for British Poetry one of the most obvious references in the game is to Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.:The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave,Awaits alike the inevitable hour. The paths of glory lead but to the grave. Whence the name of the road from the Dark Portal to Hellfire Citadel in Hellfire Peninsula. And it also, by extension, a reference to Stanley Kubrick's 1957 film, Paths of Glory, starring Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolph Menjou and George Macready. And, though this may be carrying things too far I've always thought that there was a Jimi Hendricks reference when one has to fly through a Purple Haze to enter Dalaran as it hovers over Crystalsong Forest in Northrend. For another Silence of the Lambs reference, one meets Clarice Foster just inside the Pools of Wisdom in Thunder Bluff, clearly a reference to Clarice Starling and the actress who played her, Jodie Foster.
Howcome people didn't remember quest items Za's Head, Phod's Head , Beeble's Head and Brox's Head . Reference to Douglas Adams's legendary Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? You must read it if you haven already.
Love the references, but one of my favorite in the game is the horde quest: Never Trust a Big Barb and a Smile which is a reference to the Bell Biv Devoe song, Poison (Never trust a big butt and a smile)Also, in Stormwind at the Trade District bank, if you look at one group of tellers, their first names are "Olivia" "Newton" "John"; love all the easter eggs. There's so many, no need to make an entire post about it; just a couple of notable ones if you wanted to add.
The music category here covers music references in items. It is not meant to cover race dances, NPC, quests etc. But if we get around to documenting references tied to races (dances, jokes, emotes, cities), then I'll be sure to include the points brought up here.As for poetry, like I said in the post, the item devs were really excited I found all the references and they're all intended. I had another chat with them after this post went live and while they pointed out a few ones that actually meant different things--the Zom items like Zom's Misty Hood are a reference to a friend instead of Zom Bocom--the poetry references were fine. I wouldn't say the Dryads cape was a reference if it was the only one, but since dozens of ilvl 346 JP and reputation items reference that one poem, I think it fits. If you don't believe me, I can point you to the devs on twitter :)As for quest/NPC references--they will eventually get their own post in the future. When I archive this over at /guides, I may group together references by topic instead of data type since there seems to be some confusion that this only covers items. I think it's still useful to have all the items in one place though in case you want to collect meaningful things and have them in your bags for fun. I've decided to break this down into a series of posts instead of one gigantic one covering everything to take a closer look and emphasize references that haven't been covered before, like poetry.Up next is going to be an achievement post, and then I may take a look at player references the week after. Thanks again for all the item suggestions, a few more have been added to the two posts this week!
A great set of posts, however you missed a Jonathan Coulton reference. Obviously the whole quest Skullcrusher the Mountain is a reference to the song Skullcrusher Mountain, but it's not just the gloves that reference his song.Overly Intelligent Robes refers to the "singer" of Skullcrusher Mountain, who is "way too smart for you"
I now know what i'm gonna hunt...Lady La-La , prepare to meet my warrior! (he happens to be in the area)
Needs Subjugator Devo's Whip.Dunno if power levels are high enough for A Tiny, Clever Commander when you do quests, but the Do the Imp-Possible 5-set might be ubiquitous enough. Or Set Us Up the Bomb, that's a low-hanging fruit.WoW is no fad, a game this aged has given Blizzard time (especially in the late hours) to reference left and right, they've had to design over nine-thousand NPCs with a host of quests, attacks/abilities, buffs, and (for more subtle insertions the supervisor won't catch) lines of dialogue.
Not sure if it was mentioned in the comments but for a Legend of Zelda reference:Linken's Sword of MasteryLinken's BoomerangThere are a few others but those are quest items part of the quest chain so I'd asume those quest items will be mentioned in the quest thred.
keep up the great work. It was a pleasure to read and be educated. Thank you.
