I like this guy's hair. It's very interesting, like a forest.
When he's addressing the question about realm maintenance @21:27, there are other MMO's that do regularly scheduled maintenance, for example ConquerOnline (TQ Games) actually runs two maintenance's per week, for a couple hours each time. Additionally, I think he missed/skipped the point completely about server maintenance being the maintenance of the physical server... I can imagine those machines have cooling fans which require regular cleaning to maintain airflow/cooling and I can guess that Blizz is willing to pay people to clean them each week whether they need it or not, just to avoid replacing hardware and to avoid the onslaught of angry subscribers if a server is overheating and not running properly and goes down. Also, just a thought, they probably have diagnostic software running and logging every little error the server has, and uses the scheduled downtime to replace possibly faulty hardware. Just my best guesses here.
I always enjoy, as Lore himself says, how he has a talent for turning what I initially percieve as simple questions (Duh, don't stand in the fire, next), and talks about them in length in ways I've never thought of.High five.
@tofutti: Being in the Navy as a communications electronics technician I can tell you that electronics need more than just a restart. I am sure the guys and gals atBblizz are shutting down the computers, replacing cards, cleaning out filters, replacing wires, and much more when they do their 6 hour maintenance days. They probably have a PMS (Preventative Maintenance System) that they do to make sure their systems stay in the best condition they can be for as long as they can. So yup you're absolutely right. As for the PST episode itself... I'm a bit disappointed that once again another question I submitted didn't get answered -.-.
Also, on a more comical/sarcastic note (With regard to his last question): I, as a male IRL, chose to make most of my toons female because like he replied, "they just look better". I figure, If I'm gonna play WoW a few hours/day, all I see is my toon in front of me during that time. If I'm going to follow a character around all day, I'd much rather stare at a female rather than a male. IF I were to actually run around pretending to actually be a female, that would be a whole 'nother issue. As they say: MMORPG = Mostly Men Online Role Playing Girls.
not sure but last time i checked the idiots that use pvp gear to get into heroics usually end up sucking and just pissing everyone off. so if u pve go for pve items, quest it makes a ton of money!
i made a female pally is cause i cant stand male blood elfs! but good response lore... lol
BTW, WoW can no longer be considered a "6 year old game" It is now a new, updated engine which uses some of the base art from the 6 year old game. And 6 hours down for the realms is pretty good. Think about shutting down every computer in your town and having a crew run from house to house to clean off all the "guts"(fans, filters, anything that dust hasgotten on), run a stress test on components, subsequently replace those that show signs of possible failure, runs a full maintenance on the drives(defrag, full check disk for corruption, etc. with repairs to any possible corrupted data) and have them all up and running in six hours. ummmm, yeah. If an MMO is NOT doing this kind of maintenance, they obviously don't care enough about the quality of their game.
Male subcriber here. Always had female toons in every mmo i played for a very simple reason:- If I end up spending 1000+ hours staring at the ass of a toon, i much rather it be a woman's ass ;)
We have a deaf holy pally in our guild. He had just returned from time off from WoW, farmed his 346 heroic set, and several days ago accidentally got into our BoT raid. Well, the first boss he ever killed in Cata is now Halfus Heroic, and he got the Bastion achievement, like, 1,5 hours later. He is pretty much godlike in healing. He didn't have DBM yet, and didn't know the encounters, so he did have some problems with several mechanics, but he got it later.I guess being deaf in WoW is certainly manageable.
am i the only one who put the closed captions on after he mentioned them
I know this may seem stereotyped but I just like some of my classes to be a certain sex. Most of my casters are female. Most of my melee is male. That's just the way it seems to be.
Being partially hearing impaired it is possible to raid. I have raided multiple times.
Many, many MMOs have regular weekly maintenance. Lore just doesn't happen to play them. In fact, I avoid MMOs that don't have a maintenance schedule, as then maintenance becomes disruptive. I know of at least one end-game raid guild that raids without voice chat: Cry of Luna (H) on Sisters of Elune (US). They're basically down to the last boss of all the current raids before they get to move on to Heroics. I believe they've even said publicly they would be happy to welcome deaf players. As a female player, I play whichever gender suits the RP I want to engage in with that character, although I avoid females somewhat just because I don't feel like being scantily clad most of the time. The thought that someone else is cross-dressing in-game really doesn't bother me one bit, regardless of why they do it.
My boyfriend plays exclusively female toons. He prefers the aesthetics of the female form over the male. He also has professed the "If I'm going to be staring at someone's ass..." POV.We have several male friends who play WoW: One of them has a mix of characters, though I think he skews slightly toward female. Another plays exclusively male toons. A third plays only female toons and projects himself as a female in-game to avoid the awkwardness he's run into because he "talks like a girl" most of the time. He is very "in touch" with his feminine side IRL, though not gay.As for maintenance, I'm glad they do have regular time to take care of the system. I do wish there was a single server that came up just for maintenance time with a few realms so people could still have something to do, similar to how when unexpected downtime hits certain battlegroups, lots of people will make alts on servers that are up.Anyone know if PTR is up during regular server maintenance?
